The Nile inundated once every year. The factors that made the Nile flood are the snow and the rain. At the end of winter, the snow of the mountains of Central Africa melt, feeding the tributaries of the Nile.

The Egyptians watered the land using canals that took the water to the plantations. Without the Nile, they would not have been able to grow crops.

In August and September the whole of the Nile Valley in Egypt was flooded. This inundation brought with it huge deposits of alluvium, a great mineral to make the land fertile.

In October and November, waters started to recede. The ground was prepared by ploughing. The seed was scattered by hand. Animals like sheep and goats were used to tread the seed into the ground.

In their crops they grew wheat to make bread, barley to make beer, lentils, onions, garlic lettuce and dates. When the farmers could not work the land, they went to work for the pharaoh in projects like the pyramids.
