Farmfoods is Britain’s fastet growing grocer

farmfoods adds new distribution centre Cumbernauld-based retail food chain Farmfoods has selected Central Park in Severnside, Bristol, as the location for a new 16,258-sq metre temperature-controlled distribution centre. This new site will be built by Delta Properties’ development partner, Roxhill, as a design and build freehold project with completion towards the end of 2014.

Family-owned Farmfoods is the fastest-growing grocer in the UK according to the latest research from market analysts Kantar Worldpanel. Call for courier standards

The boss of BW Refrigerated Couriers is calling for a new standard for temperature-controlled courier companies in a bid to rid the industry of cowboys who are just intent on driving down prices and putting safety at risk. Dave Hake, managing director of BWRC, believes that aggressive pricing is having a detrimental effect on the standards and safety of temperature-sensitive courier deliveries.

And now he thinks the time is right to introduce a minimum industry standard designed to regulate companies transporting temperature-sensitive products, both food and pharmaceutical. Somerset-based BW Refrigerated Couriers is a specialist food product courier, focusing solely on the distribution of ambient, chilled and frozen foods.

Coolertech’s winning threesomeRossetts and Coolertech join forces for the CV Show with a winning treble: the new Coolertech-bodied Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, Citan chiller, and Sprinter AiroSprint

Refrigerated body builder Coolertech and Mercedes-Benz dealer Rossetts Commercials have partnered to produce a fridge-bodied version of the low-emission Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid and will show the vehicles on a joint stand at the show. The factory-built 7.5-tonne Canter is the world’s first hybrid truck to make economic as well as environmental sense, says Perry Reeves, dealer principal, Rossetts.

The Canter has a 150hp diesel engine working in parallel with a slimline, 54hp electric motor, and offers impressive fuel savings and correspondingly low CO2 emissions. Despite the extra weight of the hybrid equipment, it also retains its body and payload allowance. Coolertech’s chiller body combines strength and durability with light weight to withstand the rigours of multi-drop operation, the company says.

In addition to the Canter Eco Hybrid, Rossetts supports the Fuso light truck range and the demonstration fleet includes three more vehicles built by Coolertech, all based on Mercedes-Benz chassis. The recently launched AiroSprint box body is mounted on a 3.5-tonne Sprinter chassis cab and aimed at home shopping operations. As well as enhancing the vehicle’s appearance and contributing to fuel efficiency, its relatively narrow streamlined design, which follows the lines and width of the vehicle’s cab, minimises the risk of accident damage when working in tight areas.

Also available for trial are a medium-length Sprinter van with dual-temperature (chilled and frozen) conversion and a lightweight chiller based on the extra-long variant of the Citan small van. The Sprinter has a side door allowing access for palletised product as well as personnel, while the Citan combines insulated side and rear doors with an easy to clean, removable lining. It suits sandwich companies and fresh produce suppliers.

Coolertech has acquired new Sprinter and Vito service vehicles for use by its mobile body repair engineers who provide after-sales support.

Reeves says: “Coolertech is a market leader in terms of the design and quality of its bodies and conversions, and we’re both excited about the prospects for the new, temperature-controlled Canter Eco Hybrid – it’s sure to appeal strongly to operators seeking to enhance their environmental credentials by minimising their carbon footprints.”

All new running gear from bpwBPW is launching new running gear, the Eco Air Compact, designed for 9 tonne on-road applications for drum or disc brakes.

“Special attention has been paid during its development to ensuring that both trailer assembly and the operation of the

running gear is particularly economical with BPW taking into account the specific needs of the vehicle manufacturer as well

as the fleet operator,” the company says. Eco Air Compact is mounted on a two-part cast trailing arm, the joints of which

are bolted together diagonally. “Combined with the four point contact, this guarantees optimum load transfer and

stability. Moreover, the two adjustable hanger brackets in the whole modular system provide the trailer builder

with optimum latitude for axle alignment,” BPW says.

The suspension mounting is also maintenance-free. Components are not welded together; it is of modular

construction which means individual components can be purchased separately and therefore can be easily

replaced, such as the steel-rubber-bush.

“The special, new steel-rubber-bush has been asymmetrically designed; it is load adapted, has no

recesses and its optimum axial and vertical guiding system helps to increase driving comfort and

reduce tyre wear. Homogenous force absorption, as well as even stress distribution, ensures

smooth operation and long service life.”

The Eco Air Compact composite tank is an integral component of the new running gear

system. It is made of fibreglass reinforced plastic and is thus corrosion-free. The composite material, which is treated in a patented

production process, produces a considerably reduced weight in the air tanks when compared to traditional air tanks made of steel. The

fitment of two 60 litre air tanks, for example, can result in a weight saving of up to 60%. The air tanks are available in the usual

versions of 30 litres to 120 litres. Additional weight saving comes from the double-sided axle lift offering a 12 kg reduction.

Delivering silenceThermo King, with its UK and Irish dealers, is promoting low-noise refrigeration to

meet growing demand for out of hours deliveries that require operators to limit the

noise levels of their fleets and offer quiet delivery capabilities. Thermo King’s

innovative SLXe Whisper Pro, a new unit for trailers, complies with the most

stringent Noise Abatement Society (NAS-Piek) requirements by using a

patented geo-fencing controller to automatically switch into low-noise

mode when entering a controlled zone. The absence of manual

intervention meets the very latest Piek requirement.

A specially designed acoustic package reduces the creation

of sound energy and contains it at the source. Strategically

located noise-absorbent materials and a redesigned

engine compartment reduce noise transmission. Even

the exhaust system of the SLXe Whisper Pro has

been specially tuned to minimise sound

generation at low engine speeds. The

technological achievement is considerable.

Not only does the SLXe Whisper Pro

give the operator compliance and

flexibility, but the unit also delivers

an improvement of around 15%

in fuel efficiency when

compared to other models

in its market segment.

BPW’s Eco Air tank is manufactured with reinforced fibre glass plastic. This new TÜV approved air tank saves up to 60% in weight when compared to the normal steel tanks of today. In a winding, mesh-like design, the polyamide-impregnated glass fibres not only make the air tank particularly robust, but also provide high life expectancy, BPW says. The burst pressure is more than three times the nominal pressure. The GRP material has high corrosion resistance, is weather proof, chemically stable, and can be used in temperatures from -40 °C to +80 °C. Apart from weight reduction, the Eco Air composite tank offers advantages during vehicle manufacture and with subsequent trailer maintenance: the GRP air tank can be installed by one person. Meanwhile, the air pipe connections, located in the tank end-caps, can be connected simply via standard metric fittings. The tank, which can be retrofitted, is available in three diameters: 276mm, 310mm and 396mm, and from 30 to 120litres.

INTRODUCING THE ISUZU

THE NEW ISUZU ON THE BLOCK

1312 – Urban_Ad_Cold chain news_297x420 .indd 1 18/03/2014 17:24

Carlsen Baltic is one of Europe’s biggest producers of lightweight refrigerated bodies, including light and heavy vans up to 6 tonnes, for frozen food deliveries using low-carbon, eutectic refrigeration systems.

Its latest development, to meet the growing demand in grocery home-delivery, is a multi-temperature body with eutectic plates. The body has three temperature zones: -36°C, +5°C and +12°C. The temperatures can be adjusted to meet the operator’s needs and the eutectic system will keep constant temperatures in the van.

“It is the perfect solution for today’s distribution with multi-drop delivery with multiple door openings,” says Linas Starkevicius, managing director, Carlsen Baltic.

“This solution is used by many of Europe’s leading home and office food delivery companies such as Eisman, Bofrost and Mat på Jobbet, with over 5,000 Carlsen Baltic and parent company, Carlsen Europa, units operating,” Starkevicius says.

Long-term Carlsen Baltic body user is Swedish company, Mat på Jobbet. The name translates as Food at Work. Mat på Jobbet provides food and drink services in work places and launched its service in London last year with its sister company, Convini Food Solutions.

Operating from Bermondsey, Convini delivers British-brand foods including fresh salads, wraps, baguettes and ready-made meals to offices in the inner city area. The vehicles currently make around 10 drops a day operating from 7.00am to 4.00pm. On average it takes 30-40 minutes to restock each refrigerated vending station known as a Convini Store.

Christopher Pedersen, managing director, says: “We deliver a premium range of chilled, frozen and ambient goods. When the doors are opened frequently, it is important to ensure the temperature in each compartment remains constant – particularly on a hot day.

“The Carlsen Baltic system is absolutely superior to any type of air-blown, diesel system because there is never a variation in load temperature – with any other system, you could be in trouble.”

Low maintenance, virtually silent and emission-free operation are also important factors for Convini. The company achieves lower running costs and fewer breakdowns than would normally be associated with a conventional diesel system. Vehicle service is provided locally by Pulse refrigeration.

The Carlsen Baltic vehicle on the stand is one of two vehicles for use in London. The body for Mat på Jobbet is on a Volkswagen T5 chassis with Freno frame and has Carlsen’s eutectic cooling system. The refrigerated body, which weighs 820kg to give a tonne payload, consists of four deep-freeze compartments to -35ºC with two shelves in each; four chilled compartments to +5ºC with two shelves in each; two chilled compartments at +12ºC with three shelves in each; and two dry compartments.

Vehicles on Mat på Jobbet’s Swedish operation make 10 to 12 drops per day but are capable of more if the operation requires. Charge times for the eutectic system can be as short as 3-hours, longer when first charged from ambient temperature. In Sweden, the vehicles operate from 6am till 4pm.

Mat på Jobbet has 40 Carlsen Baltic bodied vehicles making food deliveries in Stockholm, Malmö, and Gothenburg.

Carlsen Baltic is a subsidiary company of Danish-owned Carlsen Europa whose experience in frozen products goes back 140 years. Based in Lithuania, Carlsen Baltic opened a new factory in 2005. It sells its refrigerated van bodies and eutectic systems across western and Eastern Europe supported by fully equipped vehicle workshops and local service workshops throughout Europe.

Mat på Jobbet supplies workplace-based dispensing systems; refrigerators, freezers and payment systems, together with food and drink.

The food range includes breakfast foods, cold drinks, ice cream, chilled and frozen single-portion meals, sandwiches and salads. And through its partnership with sister company Convini it also supplies beverages such as coffee, tea and water..

Charge times for the eutectic system are as short as 3-hours, longer when first charged from ambient. In Sweden, the vehicles operate from 6am till 4pm

Eutectic systems consist of hollow tubes, beams or plates filled with liquid or gel that store energy and produce a cooling effect whenever necessary to maintain the correct temperature in the refrigerated container. The eutectic concept is different to conventional refrigeration systems in that a cold source (heat absorption) is provided by phase change material (the liquid or gel) rather than direct expansion of refrigerant gas. The plates or beams that contain the eutectic are charged (frozen) at night on mains power. Once the beams are frozen they operate silently and provide reliable, rapid cooling for a specific period. Systems for food transport applications can be based solely on eutectic thermal energy storage or can be a combination of a eutectic and vapour compression system

aggressive price competition from some operators is risking the standards and safety of food and other temperature-sensitive courier deliveries, says dave hake, managing director of Bw refrigerated Couriers

Over the last twenty years BWRC, better known as BW Refrigerated Couriers, has

seen many changes: more competition, the recession, better due diligence, and demanding collection and delivery parameters. The usual increases in operational costs and, in real terms, a decrease in revenue per drop, are some of the contributing factors to these changes. However, the biggest change I’ve noticed recently is operators cutting corners and cutting costs to stay in business. Business is business but when you are competing with irresponsible and at times unscrupulous individuals and companies it can be difficult to compete on cost alone. I have learnt to ride out the fly-by-night, here today, gone tomorrow operations who do nothing more than damage the refrigerated courier image and leave behind a legacy, in the eyes of some customers, that their pricing structure is somehow sustainable. It’s understandable why some customers take the risk but I’ve seen good companies struggle

and even go out of business over recent years, undercut by individuals and businesses giving little consideration to food hygiene, temperature parameters, or vehicle condition. At BWRC we spend large amounts of money annually on vehicle replenishment and upkeep. We strive to purchase the best conversions, vehicles, fridges, and adopt correct procedures when dealing with the sensitive nature of transporting foodstuffs. I feel there should be some form of minimum industry standard to regulate any company transporting temperature-sensitive products, whether food or pharmaceutical. It would then hopefully go some way to stop those who are cutting corners and who are potentially putting people’s health at risk. A comparable system would be something like the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme whereby food outlets are scored between 1 and 5. It is a good indicator for the unsuspecting consumer on what sort of establishment they might be purchasing their food

from. Likewise, a similar type of rating in our industry would do no harm to those who comply but would hopefully identify those who do not. Most customers understand the costs of running refrigerated vehicles and the associated extras but some have the mistaken belief that prices should be more in line with international ambient courier brands. At BWRC we work closely with each customer to tailor a service that meets individual requirements. This approach helps to set us apart from others. We continually search for opportunities and are currently working on a project that will benefit small and medium-sized southwest-based manufacturers. You cannot afford to stand still and be content. Sometimes you have to go out there and create your own opportunities. As with all businesses ours is in a continually changing environment and you have to adapt to survive. dave hake is managing director BwrC

this issue is devoted to the Commercial Vehicle Show which, if it is a barometer of the economy as the organisers think, then it suggests the

transport market is growing. And that is welcome news. With over 400 exhibitors at this year’s show displaying their wares it is difficult to single out any particular stand, but two exhibits did catch our eye because they respond to the pressure for low-carbon home-delivery solutions – a rapidly growing market for temperature-controlled light vehicles. Carlsen Baltic, a newcomer to the UK, but well-established on the continent, has a eutectic refrigeration, home delivery body that provides payload as well as environmental benefits of low noise and no diesel use. In the same low-carbon vein is the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid with Coolertech body on its joint stand with Rossetts Commercials. The 7.5-tonne Canter is a hybrid truck that makes economic as well as environmental sense. And it is the economic sense that is so important for temperature-controlled transport operators. Eutectics is an old technology that refined, as today’s suppliers have done, has huge potential for transport refrigeration. No longer is weight of the etuectic plates an issue while charging times have dramatically reduced. Likewise, the new technologies integrated in the Fuso suggest that hybrids are the likely solution for lower carbon operation of light trucks, in the short term at least. Readers can expect Cold Chain News to return to both systems in more detail in future issues

New trailer, drive and van tyresA flurry of new tyres and related services for trucks and vans are on offer at the CV Show later this month

Michelin will preview its new 385/65 R22.5 X multi T trailer tyre for national and regional operation. It will offer improvements in longevity, grip and rolling resistance over the current XTE3 trailer tyre of the same size, Michelin’s best-selling trailer fitment since its launch in 2007. Sharn Samra, Michelin’s head of truck marketing UK and Ireland, says: “Being able to display the new 385/65 X Multi T at the CV Show is a major coup as it’s the first time this tyre will have been exhibited anywhere in the world. It’s testament to the importance of the UK and Irish markets to Michelin.

“The 385/65 is the second most popular commercial vehicle tyre size sold domestically and accounts for approximately 16% of the market. We see huge potential for the X Multi T.

“The XTE3 has been a strong performer for years, both as original equipment and as replacements; but the X Multi T will be a game-changer in terms of trailer tyre performance.” Also on display will be an example from the Michelin XML line-up; an all-round fitment for trucks operating both on and off-road, where good grip on all types of terrain, from mud and sand to grass, snow or tarmac is required.

Bridgestone is promoting its Total Tyre Care package to help operators control tyre-related costs with its three tyre management pillars: Total Tyre Life, Total Tyre Services and Total Tyre Systems. Andy Mathias, product and marketing manager at Bridgestone, says: “We are genuinely proud of our Total Tyre Care offering and we believe it gives us a big advantage over our competitors. This accounts for much of the look and feel of our stand.”

Total Tyre Life aims to maximise tyre life, thereby reducing tyre cost/km over the entire life cycle, through the supply of Bridgestone premium new tyres and Bandag retreads. The show will see Giti Tire’s expansion of its GT Radial commercial vehicle hot cure bead-to-bead retread tyre range. GT Radial will display the GDR690 GT REE Tread drive position regional tyre available in 295/80 and 315/80 sizes. Like the existing GTR990 385/65R22.5 super single, it will be manufactured using only GT Radial casings.

ATS Euromaster has drawn on its experience of running one of the UK’s largest van fleets, to compile free advice booklets with 25 tips to help van operators. The booklets will be made available at the CV Show and will cover everything from tyres to scheduled servicing. Peter Fairlie, group sales director, says: “Most fleets know us for being the country’s largest commercial vehicle tyre specialist, but not all realise our van expertise extends to everything from Class IV and Class VII MOTs to fault diagnostics. “We’ll be using the show to highlight our van excellence – building on a recent £12m investment in upgrading our network and extending the services we offer van operators.” ATS Euromaster is also offering fleet managers the chance to get more information on its new FleetSure electronic inspection tool and Service Value Calculator, which can be used to assess a fleet’s tyres and work out potential savings.

eskimo express goes specialistEskimo Express takes on two highly specialist vehicles for the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors

Chertsey-based same-day, time-critical temperature-controlled courier firm Eskimo Express has added two Citroen Relay L3H2 diesel vans to its fleet that feature high-specification, dual-compartment bodies converted by refrigerated body manufacturer Paneltex Somers. The move is in response to rising pharmaceutical market demand. More vehicles are expected to join the fleet later this year.

With the Paneltex Somers refrigerated conversion enabling the Citroens to operate at -25°C in one compartment and +25°C in the other, Eskimo Express can now benefit from being able to use one vehicle on jobs where previously they would have had to have used two vehicles.

The Paneltex Flexi-temp pharmaceutical specification conversions are built to ATP certification Class C. Eskimo Express expects that both these vehicles will have a working life of up to six years. Tony Colato, managing director, Eskimo Express, says: “Much of our courier work is specifically for the pharmaceutical industry and we have found that, apart from Paneltex Somers, no other vehicle body manufacturer can manufacture such a high level of refrigerated conversion that is ideally suited to this industry. Our vehicles work extremely hard, on deliveries and collections all over Europe, so the reliability and consistent performance achieved by our refrigerated vehicles is vital to the success of the business.”

During 2013 Eskimo Express bought two ATP-certified Citroen Berlingos from Paneltex Somers that were converted at the company’s Norwich-based manufacturing site. The success of these two vehicles resulted in this latest order for two Citroen Relays.

“Because of the nature of the delivery work they are involved in, the refrigerated body conversion is, by design, quite complex and detailed. In addition to the capability of a 50°C differential between the two compartments, the vehicle also has twin temperature recorders to ensure that load integrity is not compromised at any time. And it has full European coverage satellite tracking,” Colato says.

The high temperature differential on these two vehicles is achieved by Paneltex’s ‘Flexi-Temp bulkhead system with double seals and high-impact finish. This provides a fully sealed, thermally efficient, partition wall between the two compartments. In addition, the vehicles are specified with two apertures in which to fit the bulkhead, giving full multi-compartment flexibility.

Refrigeration is provided by a Thermo King V300 Max Spectrum dual evaporator refrigeration unit. Other features on the new Paneltex Somers demonstration vehicle include the Somers Superfreeze Foldback side load door, the Somers Superfreeze rear door mouldings, and a recessed fridge condenser moulding.

Eskimo Express works mainly for large pharmaceutical companies, biotech organisations, food manufacturers, foodservice groups and independent food distributors. It operates a dedicated (non-groupage) service and can carry up to 1.2 tonne or four pallets.

tailor made solutionsChard, Somerset-based BW Refrigerated Couriers, which runs a 30

truck and van operation providing daily temperature-controlled courier services across the UK, has recently moved to new premises and rebranded. Managing director Dave Hake tells Cold Chain News: “A recent move into new premises, a new logo and a new website bwrc.co.uk underlines our desire for continuous improvement.”

The company delivers samples to all the major supermarket HQ’s, photography studios, magazine publishers as well as offering food service deliveries, pallet deliveries, emergency same day, planned deliveries, consolidated small orders and sandwich deliveries. “Anything we are asked to do, we can achieve,” says Hake.

“We are always striving for better. I would like to think we offer a quality, reliable service. We listen to our customers and work with them on finding solutions that best suits their requirements. We have a friendly approachable team and count customer service high on our list of priorities,” Hake says.

BWRC’s fleet consists of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter panel vans, MAN, Renault and Isuzu trucks. Van conversions are all by Somers and the lorries are mainly Solomon-bodied. Refrigeration for the vans is with GAH units and the lorries have mainly Carrier fridges. All vehicles are under maintenance contracts.

“Customers increasingly demand timed deliveries and we are very successful in achieving the required times so it’s important our vehicles are kept in good working order,” Hake says.

Temperature recording and proving temperature are standard daily requirements. “We use both Tiny Tag and Comark data logging equipment in the vehicles as well as having temperature printers and in-cab digital readouts.

“At our depot both our chillers and freezers are monitored remotely via a web-based software programme. If there was ever a problem with temperature, not only would the system alert a number of staff by text message it would also send a message directly to our fridge engineers.”
