2013 is going to be an amazing year…
Welcome to the preview issue of FAQTOR Fashion Book. We hope that
you will enjoy reading the articles and admiring the pictures as much as
we enjoyed creating it. FAQTOR has already become somewhat of a
“Global fashion collective” because we brought together talent from
around the world, including The United States, Italy, China, The United
Kingdom and more.
My mission with FAQTOR is to inspire. Whether you enjoy travel and
dining, high fashion or entertainment, everyone can find something for
them in this magazine. The purpose of this “Preview issue” is to show a
little bit of what we will be bringing, starting with our first full issue for
Spring 2013.
This issue is called “Noir-et-Blanc” because I was inspired by a Vintage
black and white photograph that was timeless and beautiful…and I want
every issue of FAQTOR to be equally as timeless. Something that you can
look back on months or years from now, and it will still be relevant.
Follow our movement and our journey as FAQTOR continues to grow. We
have so many great things in store for the future.

WHOSTHAT? FAQTOR Fashion Book sat down to chat with Chinese designer, Meiyi
Cheung, about fast fashion, the Beijing Olympics and keeping the
quality in her garments.
Meiyi Cheung is a rising fashion superstar whose innovative designs and artist
collaborations have caught the attention of fashion lovers and powerhouses
around the globe. Her collections, WHOSTHAT and Du0 bring something new to
the world of Avant-Garde Fashion. When the young designer was nominated
to design the uniforms for the Beijing, the world learned why Meiyi is an icon in
the making…
FAQTOR: When did you begin designing? What inspired you to start?
Meiyi: I started designing when I was a kid. I made dresses, jackets and head-
to-toe outfits for my doll. I think it just came very naturally when I always felt my
doll needed clothes for different activities.
FAQTOR: How would you describe your personal design aesthetic?
Meiyi: Stunning and innovative with a touch of elegance and femininity.
FAQTOR: You've spoken about "fast fashion" and being against mass
production. Tell us more about that and why you are against mass producing
your items?
Meiyi: My thoughts are developed from the recent global topic of “recycling”.
To me, we do not need “recycled” campaigns, until there is too much wastage
and over consumption. To this point, we need to go and fix the basic problem -
over consumption. The fashion Industry is one of the key industries that have
been over produced, over speed and over consumed for decades. The norm is
continuously getting worse and worse. The concept of “fashion is fast”, and
accessible for “general public” becomes a doctrine when some fast-fashion
brands have done successfully and became leaders of the market. It attracts
plenty industrial followers. However, when fashion goes faster, quality and
attention to detail are scarified due to time and cost restraint. Designers have
no time to polish their designs, nor have time to develop better fitting, and so as
the textile suppliers. Eventually, fashion does not last long, changes and
deteriorates faster and faster than we ever have in the past. I am not against
mass production, but against over-mass production, against over-speed
fashion.
FAQTOR: There is a large presence of art in your clothing, which era most
inspires you? (For example, contemporary/modern, renaissance, romantic,
etc.)
Meiyi: My ideas always developed from material and form, without inspiration
from any era in history. I hope it helps me to create something that does not
remind people of time, but only beauty and surprise.
FAQTOR: What was it like being nominated to design the uniforms for the Beijing
Olympics?
Meiyi: I was shocked and happy at the same time. It’s more like a competition
to me as there are other nominees. I take it as an experience rather than a
project to win.
FAQTOR: Which designers and artists do you admire and look up to?
Meiyi: Alba Prat, Hussein Chalayan , Shingo Sato, Ying Gao, Madamn Gres,
Tadao Ando… and more.
FAQTOR: When you are creating new pieces, what does your creative process
consist of? What gets you in the zone?
Meiyi: Go back to the very basic and the very beginning of an object, a
technique, and a form so as to find a way to break through.
FAQTOR: Which accomplishment are you MOST proud of so far in your career?
Meiyi: I have a strong belief in “Design without boundaries”. I believe as a
fashion designer, we should not be bounded by textile and cutting, styling and
sewing. Designers should go further than the traditional perception of “fashion”.
Now I am able to prove it in my projects and my career. I am now providing art
directions to fashion brands, doing my own creations, painting for top luxury
hotels, and study architectural design. Both commerciality and creativity can
be balanced.

Top Resort Collections
FAQTOR Fashion book selects its top three picks for Resort 2013
1. Dsquared2 : Dsquared2 is giving us a rock chic meets
nineties princess vibe for Resort 2013. The collection has the
perfect amount of flash with its piled on jewelry, bright colors
and vintage-inspired biker hats. Dean and Dan served us high
end and streetwear mixed into one scrumptious collection.
2. Alexander McQueen: The fashion house that needs no
introduction. McQueen delivers nothing short of amazing,
even with smaller resort collections. The pieces and the
tailoring are sharp, edgy and simply genius. The dramatic
proportions are a sharp contrast to Dsquared2 whose
collection is more relaxed and easy. Art Deco played a major
part in the inspiration behind the theme, with its mostly
metallic colors and prints.
3. Rachel Zoe: Stylist turned designer Rachel Zoe
incorporated her signature style into this collection along with
an overdose of bright colors and suits. There’s something for
just about every girl from the fun, playful girl to the lover of
high drama fashion.
