RE:CREATE SERIES VOL.1 Ltd. ed. 7” vinyl version For the limited edition of Re:Create Series Vol.1 we have collected 2nd hand 7” vinyl covers of various colour, type and condition, 350 of them to be more precise, on which we have then screen printed thick typography. Old covers turn into new covers but with the original artwork still discernible in the background. Old unplayable scratched records being replaced by new vinyls containing exclusive music fresh from the oven. Inside the redesigned covers there’s an inlay containing photos, drawings and a project description from the artists. All of this bundled together nicely with a Re:Create Series jacket band consistent in colour and design with both the inlay and the vinyl label. UNCANNY PLATEAU: THE MUSIC OF OVAL DAVID TOOP The dreaming of new forms is never exactly a dreaming, closer to a haptic discovering, the whole body engagement with tools and processes that reveals process and structures through laboratory research, a matter of circumstantial events, context, manipulation of materials, thought, revelation, irruptions and breakages. So it seems to be with Oval, a collaborative project that evolved out of the flaws of human collaboration into a collaboration between one human – Markus Popp – and the techniques and technologies that presented themselves for development. But even to say this is to construct a false image, like Olympia, the uncanny automaton who haunts E.T.A. Hoffmann‘s The Sandman, the living doll who plays piano with great accomplishment and can sing a bravura aria in a ―piercingly clear, bell-like voice‖, yet whose sneezing is revealed to be the squeaking of her clockwork mechanism winding itself up. Since the customary signs of authorship were not immediately apparent in the music of Oval, an assumption spread that he had vanished, Tron-like, into software. Yet listening back to recordings such as Systemisch, Dok, Process, Commers and 94 Diskont, some of them dating back more than 16 years now, allows a certain perspective, a realisation that of all the proliferating artists of new electronic music from that highly active period, only a few possessed a recognisable enduring identity, a distinctive mark that we can ‗hear‘ or ‗know‘. Since that time, the generic shuffling of audio files within corporate productivity software has become ubiquitous, the consequences anonymous and forgettable. Oval, however, oscillates between the specificity of his design, the singularity of a distinctive aesthetic, and the overwhelming feeling that software is thinking, that there is a heuristic, or generative process in action through which new auditory forms are emerging in an extra-human realm.

Aber bevor weggeworfen wird, muss schließlich produziert werden: Und nie war das so einfach wie mit den softwarebasierten, persönlichen, portablen Musikstudios von heute. Was einmal als fast entmutigend unerschwingliche „Wissenschaft-für-sich― begann, vertraut inzwischen auf ein mächtiges Arsenal aus Software, Standards und Schnittstellen: Elektronische Musikproduktion erscheint heute als globales, universelles Hobby und uferloses kreatives Betätigungsfeld. Musik produzieren im Zeitalter dieser verschwimmenden Grenzen von traditionellen Musikinstrumenten (akustisch und elektrisch) und ihrer virtuellen Nachbildung durch Software ist ein Schwelgen im Überfluss: Jeder, der noch möchte, hat Jahrzehnte an musikalischem research & development – akademisch und nicht-akademisch – im sofortigen Zugriff. Alles ist da: Jedes denkbare musikalische Paradigma, jede Kompositionstechnik, jedes Genre ist als Preset verfügbar. Es gibt Kreativwerkzeuge auf jedem Niveau, für jeden Stil, auf jeder Skala. Universelle Verfügbarkeit plus Know-How plus Implosion aller Bewertungskriterien ergeben „unendliche Möglichkeiten―. Und könnte man nicht darüber hinaus sogar behaupten, dass wir gerade dabei sind, schon in die nächste Ära einzutreten? Und zwar in die hyperreale Epoche der elektronischen Musik, in der die digitale Emulation von instrumentaler Klanglichkeit und musikalischen Strukturen die Originalinstrumente zumindest in Schlüsselbereichen bereits hinter sich gelassen hat?

オヴァル＝マーカス・ポップの20年

初期オヴァル 1991—1994

オヴァルは、マーカス・ポップ、セバスチャン・

オーシャッツ、フランク・メッツガーの3人によ

って、1991年に結成された。デビュー・アルバム

『Wohnton』は、neue deutsche welleの老舗レ

ーベルであるAta

Takよりリリースされていることからも想像でき

るように、その作風はいまだニ

ュー・ウェーヴ色の強いものであった。しかし、

すでにその中にも、それ以降のマーカス・ポップ

個人のプロジェクトと化していくオヴァルへと続

く要素をはっきりと聴き取ることができる。それ

が、オヴァルの音楽を特徴づける重要な要素であ

る、レコードのスクラッチならぬ、CDのスキッ

プ音、CDの記録面にテープを貼るなどの操作を

して故意に生じさせた音とび、といった諸々の「

素材」である。オヴァルというグループが3人だ

ったころのポップの役割は（たとえ彼がリーダー

だったのだとしても）、たとえばロキシー・ミュ

ージックのブライアン・イーノ、あるいはカンの

ホルガー・シューカイのように、楽曲の中に楽音

以外の要素を持ち込み、楽曲を異化することにあ

ったのかどうかは定かではない。彼が持ち込んだ

そうした実験的要素の位置づけも（たとえ彼がギ

ター・ポップ好きだったのだとしても）、当時の

オヴァルのサウンドの中で明確にはなっていない

ように聴こえる。アルバムの中で、楽曲の中で、

どこか違和感のようなものを感じなくはないその

サウンドは、しかし、今にして思えば、今後のオ

ヴァルがたどっていくことになる展開を、十分に

主張するものだった。

オヴァル＝マーカス・ポップのコンセプト

2作目の『systemisch』からは、フランクフルト

の電子音楽レーベルの老舗、Mille

Plateauxからの

リリースとなっている。ここでも、とりあえず3

人組のグループという編成を維持してはいるが、

サウンド的には大きく大胆に、飛躍的変貌を遂げ

ている。これまで、楽曲の後景に聴こえていたに

とどまっていた、CDのスキップ音や音とびとい

った素材が、オヴァルの音楽を特徴づける要素と

して一気に前面化し、オヴァルのコンセプトおよ

びサウンドのフレームが確立された。

ここに聴かれるサウンドは、CDを早送りなど通

常の再生とは異なる状態で再生することで生じる

スキップ音、および、正常な作動状態においては

忌避されるべきエラー、いわばデジタル・ノイズ

である。そして、それはまさにCDから聴こえて

くる、CDそのものが発する音とも言えるものだ

っ

た。（なにしろ、そこには「Compact

Disc」という直裁なタイトルを持つ曲も収録され

ている。
