A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MARTIN J. WALSH

Greetings,

Faneuil Hall is one of Boston’s most iconic destinations. In many ways, it tells the story of ourcity. It’s often called the “Cradle of Liberty,” where revolutionaries gathered to discuss the future of our nation. Today, it’s where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy the food, music, and culture of our diverse city.

My office at City Hall looks out over the Marketplace. Every day, I’m inspired to see how ourcity’s rich history endures in this exciting urban hub. Modern dancers and talented musiciansperform in the same place where early Bostonians demonstrated for American Independence.School children come to learn about the women’s suffrage rallies and anti-slavery protests thatchanged the course of history. And local vendors sell goods on the same spot where the earliestmerchants helped to establish Boston’s economy.

Faneuil Hall is also the anchor of Boston’s Marketplace District, which includes our traditionaloutdoor Haymarket as well as the modern Boston Public Market. It ties together some ofBoston’s most historic neighborhoods, like the North End and Beacon Hill. And it’s rightacross the street from City Hall Plaza, which we’ve transformed into a welcoming public spacethat hosts cultural events all year long.

For centuries, Faneuil Hall has been a place where big ideas are born. It’s a living monumentto a city that’s just as excited about its future as it is proud of its past. We invite everyone to explore this gateway to Boston.

Sincerely,

Mayor Martin J. Walsh

Greetings,

Faneuil Hall is a place where our city’s past and present come together. It’s considered the “Cradle of America,” a place where revolutionaries gathered to plan the future of our nation. Today, it remains one of Boston’s most iconic landmarks.

Faneuil Hall attracts visitors, vendors, and performers who reflect the diversity of our city and our country. Dancers and artists perform where early Americans fought for their freedom and equal rights. Students from around the world come to learn about the events that shaped our nation. And vendors sell food and gifts from push carts on the same cobblestone streets where early merchants helped to establish Boston’s economy.

Faneuil Hall also serves as the heart of our Marketplace District, which includes our historic outdoor Haymarket as well as our modern Boston Public Market. It’s just steps away from City Hall Plaza, which we’ve turned into a vibrant space for public events, with more renovations to come. It’s also at the intersection of the historic Freedom Trail and the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Visitors can relax on the grass, grab a bite to eat from a wide array of food trucks, or explore some of the most important sites in American history.

For centuries, Faneuil Hall has been a place where big ideas are born. It’s a living monument to a city that’s just as excited about its future as it is proud of its past. We invite everyone to explore this important gateway to Boston.

Sincerely,

Mayor Martin J. Walsh

Faneuil Hall Marketplace – Rich In History

Immerse yourself in history as soon as you step onto the cobblestone walkway that surrounds Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Adjacent to the marketplace is Historic Faneuil Hall, gifted to the city in 1742 by wealthy merchant Peter Faneuil to be used as a food market for the city’s growing population. The Great Hall was added on almost as an afterthought, but it has become the most historically significant spot at Faneuil Hall. The Great Hall has hosted impassioned orators including the firebrand Samuel Adams who rallied the citizens of Boston to fight for independence from Great Britain, President George Washington and women’s suffragette activist Susan B. Anthony. The Great Hall is also where John F. Kennedy gave his last televised campaign speech during his presidential campaign in 1960. The National Park Service oversees historic Faneuil Hall and offers free daily ranger-guided talks every half hour from 9:30am – 4:30pm in the Great Hall unless it is reserved for a city-sponsored event. For military history buffs, don’t miss the museum on the 4th floor of historic Faneuil Hall. It’s the home of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, the oldest chartered military organization in the western

hemisphere granted in 1638 by the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay and signed by Governor John Winthrop. Its mission was to prepare its members to serve as officers in the enrolled militia companies. In the museum you will see artifacts such as firearms, swords, paintings, and medals that reflect the role that Boston played in a variety of military affairs since the 1700s. Admission to the museum is free and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9am-3:30pm. More colonial Boston history is just steps outside the Dock Square entrance of historic Faneuil Hall where Samuel Adams Park is located and features a commanding statue of Adams, one of the Sons of Liberty who was instrumental in the Revolutionary War. A new tap room bearing his name is now open adjacent to the park serving craft beer made on the premises by the Boston-based company Samuel Adams that was established in 1987. The Samuel Adams Tap Room opened in January 2020 and features Samuel Adams craft beers and special tasting menus throughout the week. When you are visiting Faneuil Hall Marketplace, stop by and toast the America’s Revolutionary War Hero with his namesake beer. Continue your history journey at Quincy Market where historic walking tours are held every week with guide Linda

Perlman. Discover the behind-the-scenes stories about how Quincy Market was built. Find out what the city of Boston was like when it opened in 1826, the proud accomplishment of Mayor Josiah Quincy who had it built without any tax or debt. For more information visit www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com.

IRISH EYES I LOVE BOSTON SPORTS

How Push Carts BeganCan you spot the image of the bull on the weathervane atop the dome on Quincy Market? That was the inspiration for the name “Bull Market” that describes the 35 push carts full of unique gift items and artisan wares at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. When the Marketplace was renovated and reopened to the public in 1976, there were empty spaces on either side of Quincy Market. To fill those spaces, the developer sought local craftspeople to sell their goods from wooden carts that resembled those used since the mid 1800’s by the Haymarket food peddlers next door. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is where the push cart phenomenon was born and subsequently replicated across the country, now a $12 billion industry. The push carts are all locally owned and operated and offer everything to dress you from head to toe. You’ll find socks, undergarments, t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and jewelry to dazzle up your outfit. The push carts have a wide selection of Boston-themed clothing for all ages from infants to adults. Gifts from around the world can also be found at the Bull Market, including Russian dolls, Turkish good luck charms and keepsakes from Ireland and Asia. There is even a new push cart for your pets, Wags and Whiskers, where you’ll find cat and dog accessories such as treats, clothing, leashes and toys. Wags and Whiskers Owner Lisa Mulcahy says Faneuil Hall Marketplace is the perfect spot for her push cart. “Wags and Whiskers is one of the best decisions I

ever made. I get to sell items that I love in an open market and even dogs can come by to visit and get a treat.” Lisa is also a big proponent of pet adoptions and encourages prospective pet owners to “please adopt, don’t shop.” Ten percent of every t-shirt and plush stuffed animal sold is donated to a shelter for homeless pets. Lisa is also the owner of the push cart Musically Yours. Another newcomer to the Bull Market is the push cart Liquor Wicks™ that makes natural soy candles in your favorite repurposed spirits bottles. Stop by Liquor Wicks™ and ask owner Freddy Freeman about their mouth-watering fragrance options. “Our repurposed beer and wine bottle candles are two of our customer favorites! They come in a wide assortment of legendary fragrance options sure to please any palate,” said Freddy. Local artisans will be on display at another new push cart, It’s a Shore Thing, featuring nautical and Boston-theme keepsakes. Owner Julia Morash had envisioned opening up a push cart at Faneuil Hall Marketplace more than 20 years ago when she was a student at Emmanuel College and now her dream has come true. You will find one-of-a-kind magnets, wall decorations and even hand-painted lobster claws from Maine! Stop by and visit It’s a Shore Thing where 100 percent of the items are made in New England. Other push carts feature sports paraphernalia, toys, magic tricks, games and all types of accessories for your mobile phone and Boston-themed souvenirs. Stroll through the Bull Market and visit the push carts that are located both inside and outside of Quincy Market. It’s a shopping experience that you won’t forget. For a complete list of the Bull Market/push carts, see pages 33 and 35.

Several of the original vendors are still serving customers 44 years later as hungry visitors make their way through the center of Quincy Market deciding what food strikes their fancy. Grab a slice at Regina Pizzeria, who invented the concept of selling the famous pie by the slice when they opened to spectacular crowds in 1976. Stop at ARIS B-B-Q for authentic American standbys including ribs, chicken and burgers. The Walrus & Carpenter Oyster Bar has also been serving fresh seafood since 1976 and is one of only two food vendors with seating where diners can enjoy a cup of chowder, shucked oysters, lobster rolls and other New England seafood favorites. Boston and Maine Fish Company is the other stop for fine seafood and adult beverages. Any dining experience at the Food Colonnade must include dessert, so visit Kilvert & Forbes Bakeshop and Maggie’s Sweets for a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie. It’s one of the first bakeries at Quincy Market, which was opened by former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry when he was an attorney in private practice in Boston. The Quincy Market Food Colonnade has welcomed additional new vendors over the years and now has options for every diner, including gluten-free, vegan and cooked-to-order specialties. Whether you are in the mood for New England seafood, Italian, Indian, Japanese, Mexican or American fare, you will find it all in the nation’s first food hall, a “must do” for any visit to Boston.REGINA PIZZERIA

Quincy Market Food Colonnade – Ahead of the

Food Hall TrendWho knew that back in 1976 when the Quincy Market Food Colonnade opened after the renovation of Faneuil Hall Marketplace, that it would be setting a trend that has been replicated all around the U.S.? The creative inspiration for the Quincy Market Food Colonnade came from Ben Thompson, one of the original architects of Faneuil Hall Marketplace and his wife Jane. They traveled all over the world and gathered inspiration from public marketplaces from Mexico City to Venice to Helsinki that were full of vitality and places where food was central to the experience. “From the first day, visitors were amazed and thrilled to buy pizza or fresh shucked oysters and take them to eat outdoors on a friendly street. The

marketplace was in fact a downtown street picnic for all ages,” said Jane Thompson. The Food Colonnade at Quincy Market, originally a market with vendor stalls purveying beef, fish, poultry, dairy products, fruit and vegetables and dry goods, continues to provide visitors with an eclectic array of cuisine for all tastes. The historic building is considered an architectural gem designed in the neoclassical style by Alexander Parris and features a rotunda with seating on two levels for people purchasing meals at the Food Colonnade. Antique signs of former food merchants adorn the rotunda’s brick walls echoing the building’s past: “Carroll & Lilley Butcher Supplies,” “MacLean Beef. Co.,” “Empire Fruit Co.”
