    The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park,

    San Diego, California, is one of thelargest and most progressive zoos in the

    world, with over 4,000 animals of more

    than 800 species. It is also one of the few

    zoos in the world that houses the giantpanda.

    EXHIBITS

    Monkey Trails is home primarily to monkeys such as guenons,

    mangabeys and the colorful mandrill, but it also showcases manyother species of animals, such as Visayan Warty Pigs. Pygmy hippos,

    slender-snouted crocodiles, and many species of turtles and fish can

    be seen in a series of water/land exhibits all with underwater viewing

    areas

    Monkey Trails and Forest Tales, opened in 2005, showcases monkeys andother animals from the rainforests of Asia and Africa.

    Panda Research Station first opened at the zoo in 1996. As of

    September, 2008, the San Diego Zoo is one of four zoos in the U.S.

    which have giant pandas on display, and is the most successful in terms of

    panda reproduction.

    Polar Bear Plunge originally opened in 1996, and recently reopened

    in March 2010 after renovations. This unique exhibit houses over 30

    species representing the Arctic.

    Elephant Odyssey is among the zoo's newest exhibits, opened on May 26, 2009

    on the site of the former Hoof and Horn Mesa. The main feature of the exhibit is

    the 2.5-acre (10,000 m2) elephant habitatmore than 3 times the size of the Zoo's

    former elephant exhibit, in what used to be Elephant Mesa (now the "Urban

    Jungle").

    THE PHILADELPHIA ZOO

    The Philadelphia Zoo, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on

    the west bank of the Schuylkill River, was the first zoo in the UnitedStates. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March

    21, 1859, its opening was delayed by the American Civil War until July

    1, 1874. It opened with 1,000 animals and an admission price of 25

    cents

    The Philadelphia Zoo is one of the premier zoos in the world for

    breeding animals that have been found difficult to breed in captivity.

    The zoo also works with many groups around the world to protect the

    natural habitats of the animals in their care.

    The zoo is 42 acres (170,000 m2) and is home to more than 1,300

    animals, many of which are rare and endangered. The zoo features a

    children's zoo, a balloon ride, a paddleboat lake, a rainforest themedcarousel, and many interactive and educational exhibits.

    CINCINNATI ZOO ANDBOTANICAL GARDEN

    The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, is the second-oldest

    zoo in the United States and is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It openedin 1875, just 14 months after the Philadelphia Zoo on July 1, 1874.

    The Reptile House is the oldest zoo building in America, dating from

    1875.

    The Cincinnati Zoo is located in the Cincinnati neighborhood of

    Avondale. It was founded on 65 acres (26 ha) in the middle of the city,

    and since then it has acquired some of the surrounding blocks and several

    reserves in Cincinnati's outer suburbs. The zoo conducts breeding

    programs, especially for cheetahs, black rhinoceros, white Bengal tigers,and Western Lowland Gorilla.

    A bonobo was born at the zoo in December 2003, bringing the U.S.

    zoo population to 60, of which seven are in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati

    Zoo was the home of Martha, the last living passenger pigeon, which died

    there in 1914. It also was home to the last living Carolina parakeet in

    1918. The Zoo also has the California Sea Lion, Diana Monkey, MantledGuereza, and Congo Peafowl.
