- Wanted control of the Mississippi Valley

- Feb. 1862, took Fort Donelson

- Broke confederate hold in Chattanooga Tennessee

- Defeated general Lee at Petersburg

★ What makes him unique

-General Ulysses S. Grant's victories in the Civil War made him a national hero.

-was the Republican Party's candidate for President in 1868.

★ His Impact on the war

-lead the North to victory over the Confederacy

-Had many victories in the beginning

- Lead Lincoln’s forces against the South.

-Was commander in chief of Virginia military force

- responsible for educating many of the men who would later serve under him

- chosen to take over the vacant position, and became commander of the Confederate armies.

granddaughter of Martha Washington.

★ Impact on the civil war- Lee's brilliant strategies prolonged the war 2

years.

George McClellan★ Significance-McClellan organized the Army of the

Potomac in 1861

-briefly served as general-in-chief of the Union Army.

-Well liked by his men

★ What makes him unique?- skillfully reorganized Union forces

- Fellow officers claimed he was “Scared of his own shadow”

★ Impact on the war- the Patreaous of all U.S. forces

-He was fired by Lincoln for being too timid and indecisive in the heat of battle.
