Message from the Chair Dear FamMedPAC supporters, With more than $930,000 in contributions from members like you, FamMedPAC received record support during the 2014 election cycle. The PAC spent $833,000 to support 139 candidates and committees, and more than 84 percent of those candidates won. In addition to direct campaign contributions, FamMedPAC conducted mail and radio advertisements for Rep. Raul Ruiz, MD (D-CA) and Rep. Ami Bera, MD (D-CA), who both won re-election. As our funds continue to grow, FamMedPAC will support even more candidates who support our issues. FamMedPAC has received strong support from AAFP members since the beginning of the year, with $290,000 in contributions from 1,397 members who made at least one contribution to the PAC, at an average of $207. The PAC has already been very active in 2015—we have contributed $203,000 to 58 candidates and committees. As the new Congress reflects on health care issues, family medicine will prominently have a seat at the table, thanks in large part to your support of FamMedPAC. All of this is only possible because of your support, and for that, I thank you. While your financial support is extremely valuable, your involvement and endorsement is just as beneficial. As I have said before, you are our best ambassadors to other AAFP members who may not know how important it is to support our efforts. When you let your colleagues know you support FamMedPAC, you encourage them to get involved as well. We have the potential to be the largest, most powerful political action committee in the physician world, and we can only reach that goal with your continued help and support. If every AAFP member made an annual donation of just $100, we’d have the largest health care PAC in the nation. Think about how effective we could be… together we can make it happen. Please enjoy this latest issue of the FamMedPAC Report. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Congress of Delegates and Family Medicine Experience in Denver later this year, so I can thank you personally for all that you do to promote our specialty. FamMedPAC Report | 2 | June/July 2015

Illinois AFP President Elect Alvia Siddiqi, MD delivered a FamMedPAC contribution to Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) back home, in her Illinois Congressional District.

Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) stopped by the AAFP Commission on Governmental Advocacy (CGA) meeting in Washington, DC to see his constituent and friend, Sarah Sams, MD, FAAFP, and to discuss the AAFP’s legislative priorities and health care agenda in the 114th Congress.

Conference Round UpFamily Medicine Congressional Conference ReportFamMedPAC received $20,365 in contributions from attendees at this year’s Family Medicine Congressional Conference (FMCC) in Washington, DC, which broke a record for support for the second year in a row. The PAC had a very visible presence during FMCC, with the booth located just outside the main meeting room. The PAC cosponsored FMCC’s opening reception, where Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL) delivered remarks.

Members of the Montana Academy of Family Physicians visited Washington, DC for FMCC where they were able to meet with their congressman and senators to discuss AAFP legislative priorities.

FamMedPAC Report | 3 | June/July 2015

FamMedPAC Chapter AwardsAAFP Leadership Conference ReportFamMedPAC received $15,405 in donations during the Annual Chapter Leader Forum (ACLF) and National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL) in Kansas City—a new record for this event. AAFP President Elect Wanda Filer, MD, FAAFP presented the FamMedPAC Chapter Awards during the Conference.

The FamMedPAC Chapter Awards are presented each year at the AAFP Leadership Conference to AFP chapters that raise the highest donation amounts for their size (small, medium, and large). The Chairman’s Award is granted to the chapter with the highest percentage of contributions at the Club George level—$365 or higher for the year.

This year, Dr. Filer presented FamMedPAC Chapter Awards to:

South Dakota – Small Chapter and Chairman’s Award Winner

Oklahoma – Medium Chapter Winner

California – Large Chapter Winner South Dakota—Scott Boyens, MD, Lisa Brown, MD, Carletta Hauck, executive director, and Dr. Flier

Oklahoma—Russell Kohl, MD, Randy Wexler, MD, FAAFP, Syeachia Dennis, MD, Suben Naidu, MD, Rachel Franklin, MD, Sam Blackstock, executive vice president, Shadi Edalati, MD, Kari Ames, deputy director, Tomás Owens, MD, Clay Powell, MD, and Dr. Filer.

California—Kareen Espino, MD, MS, Yushu “Jack” Chou, MD, Lee Ralph, MD, Jay W. Lee, MD, MPH, Scott Nass, MD, MPA, Shani Muhammad, MD, Caithness “Casey” Rodriguez, MD, MSPH, and Dr. Filer.

2015-2016 Fundraising ContributionsAt $290,000, FamMedPAC has received strong support from AAFP members since the first of the year. So far in 2015, 1,397 members have made at least one contribution at an average of $207. While this is great news for the PAC, each and every donation we receive is important to help reach our target, and to sustain our purpose as family physicians. Without strong representation on the Hill, family medicine is at risk.

If every AAFP member contributed just $100 a year to the PAC (about $0.27 a day), we would be the largest specialty medical PAC in the country, fighting for you and your patients. Let’s work together to encourage our fellow AAFP members and peers to support FamMedPAC.
