The Secretary of Agriculture and a
member of his staff were out for a
government-paid-for plane ride. The
secretary unwrapped a $100 bill from a
roll in his pocket and said, “I think I will
throw this $100 bill out of the window and
at least one farmer will be happy.” His aid
said, “Wouldn’t it be better to throw two
$50 bills and make two farmers happy?”
With that the pilot said, “Why don’t
both of you jump out the window and
make all of the farmers happy?”
A farmer said, “My brother doesn’t
accomplish anything.” His friend asked,
“Doesn’t he work for the government?”
“That’s what I meant — he doesn’t do
anything.”
The Lord’s Prayer contains 56 words.
Lincoln’s Gettysburg address 260; the Ten
Commandments, 300; and our President’s
Health Program several thousand. Who
said big government isn’t better at being
big? Just think, thousands of words and no
one knows what it says. Now that it is law,
I’m afraid we will learn.
By now I am reasonably sure you realize
the writer of “Hello Again” is sincerely
interested in the future of our nation.
After listening to too many radio and T.V.
speeches, years of reading newspapers
and magazines, all offering their self-
servicing politically biased opinions, I have
finally figured out what politics is all
about.
Politics is the art of
obtaining money from
those who have it
(personally rich
individuals and
corporations) and
votes from the poor
on the pretext of protecting each from
the other.
When I was a young one, we kids did not
dare to act down in the dumps or gloomy
or Mom would haul out her large wooden
spoon and a bottle of cod liver or castor
oil. At first sight of that combination and
before the threatening treatment, our
faces would break out in ear-to-ear
smiles, the sure cure.
The U.S. economy appears to be
suffering from the “down in the dumps
with more than a healthy share of gloom.”
Mom is gone now — I wonder if we could
ask some of you moms to dig out a big
wooden spoon and a couple of bottles of
Mom’s elixir and head for Washington,
stopping first at the White House. Just
think, you might go down in history as the
one who saved America.
We American citizens and friends just
celebrated the 4th of July a couple
months ago. Hopefully remembering the
one who created this huge beautiful land
and those who came before us,
establishing our government. I wish we
could all gather around a bonfire and hear
someone sing or recite the following:
“O Say can you see, by the dawn’s early
light, what so proudly we hailed at the
twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad
stripes and bright stars, through the
perilous fight, over the ramparts we
watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare, the bombs
bursting in air, gave proof through the
night that our flag was still there. O say
does that star spangled banner yet wave,
o’er the land of the free and the home of
the brave?”
Burn some famous American hotdogs,
sip some American created Pepsi or
Coca-Cola, hitch around the fire to keep
the smoke out of our eyes, swat a few
mosquitoes, sit quietly for a while, join
hands and hearts together silently
remembering, thanking our forefathers
and our Heavenly Father.
Or are we going to be the generation
remembered in history as those who gave
in to socialism, letting big government
take over our lives, turning over our
freedom to an evermore powerful,
dominating government. I would rather
have it said that I would sooner go to my
grave then be part of those who sold out
this wonderful country to socialism.
Let’s share a thought. I am heading
towards old age and I have very few people
who dislike me. I have out-lived most of
them.

thoughts. If you think in negative terms,
you will achieve negative results, but if you
think in positive terms, you will achieve
positive results. ‘Man is mind and

better, for a triple braided cord is not
easily broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, 12).
Remember tomorrow’s happiness
depends on today’s shared friendship.
Share in God’s friendship—respect for
God is the beginning of wisdom. Say hi to
your neighbor. Remember love conquers
all.

opportunities of theHerkimer-Fulton-Hamil-
ton-Otsego BOCES adultpractical nursing pro-gram were laid out for in-coming students duringtheir recent orientation.
The about 85 adult stu-dents who attended theorientation will either betaking the full-time pro-gram, the part-time dayprogram or the part-timeevening program.
Sara Nicolette, theHerkimer BOCES adultvocational nursing pro-grams coordinator, of-fered the students tipsand warned them to be
ready to work hard.“You have no idea what
you’re getting into —none,” Nicolette said, tothe students. “But if youwant it, we will get youthere.”
The orientation tookplace on Thursday, Aug.16, at HerkimerJunior/Senior HighSchool.
Herkimer BOCES hasbeen training practicalnurses in the MohawkValley dating back towhen the program wasestablished in 1963.
This new group of stu-dents — along with about40 returning students —will begin classes onWednesday, Sept. 5.Graduates of the programbecome licensed practicalnurses.
“It presents them withopportunities to continuetheir education or enterthe workforce,” Nicolettesaid.
At the orientation onFriday, students receivedpackets with informationabout the framework ofthe program and what
the expectations are forthem.
“It sets them up so theycan be successful,” Nico-lette said.
Testing to be eligible fornext school year’s nurs-ing class begins on Oct.1.
