Ripples of Hope, in partnership with City Year’s Red Jacket Society, invite you to join us for a powerful learning journey featuring City Year South Africa.

OVERVIEW OF THE JOURNEY We’ll spend 9 days and 8 nights in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where we’ll experience the rich culture and history of the nation with our partners at City Year South Africa as our hosts and guides. Together, we’ll visit important cultural institutions and engage in service work with City Year South Africa and other partner organizations, such as Kliptown Youth Program.

Our program is designed to balance rich cultural explorations as the backdrop and context for the journey’s service experiences. With that in mind, we’ll lead excursions to The Apartheid Museum and Hector Pieterson Museum, Robben Island, Table Mountain and the District 6 Museum. In addition to these historic sites families will have the opportunity to experience the native art presented at local galleries and markets, music through song and dance, and the amazing foods of the region.

Throughout our Family Service Journey we will be joined by City Year South Africa Service Leaders (corps members) who will serve as our cultural ambassadors, and local non-profit agencies whose primary focus is on youth and education. Custom designed service days with these organizations will include both physical and human service programming, such as:

o Working side by side with children at local schools and community centers in Johannesburg, Soweto and Cape Town. o Opportunities to connect with families in Soweto working together in service and sharing a meal o Music and dance workshops, painting, building gardens, house and building refurbishing o Fun and educational activities for kids, reading, storytelling and spending time with local residents who want to connect and share with others

Family Learning Journey with City Year South Africa

TRIP DATES: June 12-21, 2016** (Johannesburg – 5 Nights, Cape Town – 3 Nights). ** COST: $4,400 per person* (land only, double occupancy), single supplement $700. The per person fee includes:

o Eight nights accommodations (double occupancy) o Daily breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinnero Daily Ground transportation o Admissions to local museums and sites with local cultural experts o Service site project materials (i.e. building materials and supplies)o Honorariums to local non-profit partnerso Access to intimate conversations with local community leaders o Pre-Journey Guide to South Africa’s people and culture o Daily Service Briefingso Family Welcome Gift Bag (Reflection Journal, t-shirts, hats and a sampling of local treats)

STEP 1: RESERVE YOUR SPACESpace is limited! To secure your reservation, please send in a deposit of $400/per person within two weeks of confirming your participation. Please make checks payable to Ripples of Hope, P.O BOX 1263, Dedham MA ,02027. Once we receive your deposit, we will email an information packet with the forms we’ll need completed and returned with your final payment.

STEP 2: SECURE YOUR FLIGHTS All families are responsible for booking their own flights to South Africa, including their in-country flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town on June 17th. Please note, flights are not included in the $4,400 journey cost. Participants should plan to arrive in Johannesburg no later than 2:00pm SAST on Monday, June 13th, and leave the morning of Tuesday, June 21st from Cape Town.

STEP 3: COMPLETE AND SUBMIT FORMS AND ADDITIONAL PAYMENTS Complete and submit the mandatory travel forms sent to you in your Welcome Packet, along with your trip fee balance.

MONDAY, JUNE 13DAY 1: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Families arrive throughout the day at Tambo International Airport (JNB) Ground transfers from airport to hotel available upon request

5:30 PM Welcome Dinner & Orientation (all families are required to attend)

TUESDAY, JUNE 14 -FRIDAY, JUNE 17DAYS 2-5: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Breakfast Buffet breakfast at hotel Morning Circle – Daily Briefing and review schedule of the day

9:00 am Board bus to travel to morning programming Service learning visits to cultural/historic sights - OR - physical service/visits with nonprofit partners

Lunch Provided at service site or local restaurant

Detailed list of service projects, historical sights, hotel and restaurants will be confirmed prior to departure. The above schedule depicts the framework of a typical day. Lunches and dinners are provided in group setting, breakfast is at leisure prior to morning bus departures.

Activities will include:o Meeting with corps members from City Year South Africa and participating in a service day. o Exploring the rich and complex history of the city and the country. Stops may include the Apartheid Museum and/or Constitution Hill.o Families will visit Kliptown Youth Programme (KYP), which is led by City Year Alum and CNN Hero of the Year Finalist Thulani Madondo. They will learn how his experience at City Year South Africa helped prepare him to lead an organization that is now changing the lives of hundreds of Kliptown youth.

**Please note that the group will travel together at all times during the scheduled program.

SATURDAY, JUNE 18DAY 6: JOHANNESBURG/CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Morning Group Transfer to Tambo International (JNB) for flight to Cape Town (CPT) (Families responsible for booking ticket for in-country Johannesburg to Cape Town flight—all families will be asked to book the same morning flight)

Afternoon Arrival at Cape Town International Airport and ground transfer to hotel

SUNDAY, JUNE 19-MONDAY, JUNE 20DAYS 7-8: CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

(Format for days will be similar to Johannesburg schedule)

Closing Dinner & Reflections on the evening of Day 8

TUESDAY, JUNE 21DAY 9: PROGRAM ENDS – Independent Departures from Cape Town

Families will have the option to extend their stay on their own through the weekend, enjoying the sights of Cape Town or making their way to other cities in South Africa or returning home.
