BILL & ELIZABETH PHELPS, JOHNSBURG, IL – Soon after Elizabeth retired from health retail sales in 2010, she looked for a volunteer opportunity in the medical field. She discovered the Clinic, met with our Volunteer Director Kathy Rauch, and immediately began in our dispensary to inventory and organize our donated medications. She has become a vital volunteer in our dispensary, as we have relied on her every week since 2010 to support our growing pharmaceutical program. She and her husband Bill also attend our galas and have volunteered at our Care4 Breast Cancer 5Ks. Thank you, Bill & Elizabeth!

PARTNERKOLZE’S CORNER GARDEN, WOODSTOCK - In 2011, we approached Bob Kolze for a donation to our gala from his nursery. Bob admitted he did not know about the Clinic and took an immediate interest in our mission. He was happy and motivated to help us with our fundraiser, so much so that he has donated every year since! Through this partnership we have been able to come to rely on Bob and his staff for awesome donation items to help us raise funds. Bob is a committed small business owner in McHenry County, and we are fortunate to have his support, not to mention his gorgeous plants and flowers! Thank you Bob!

You helped Diane’s journey “In November 2015, I noticed a large lump in my breast which I was very concerned about. But I had to hold off on going to a doctor because I worked a semi-seasonal job and was uninsured. I could not afford treatment, so I monitored my lump for many months, and was initially relieved to notice that it was decreasing in size. However, in April of 2016 I began to experience significant pain in what remained of my lump. I was even more freaked about my health at that point! I had to have it examined and saw Dr. Riggs in McHenry. She told me about the clinic .She personally put me on her patient list at the clinic. When I met Dr. Riggs there, I was happy to see how much time she took to just talk with me, and reassure me. I needed to have several screenings and exams done, especially since I had not had a mammogram in over 15 years. Dr. Riggs was very nice and helpful – I told her she was my new best friend! “…I was so relieved.” She and the Gavers Cancer Center referred me to the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP). Dr. Riggs ordered an ultrasound through the Gavers Cancer Center and IBCCP approved it. I had not only an ultrasound, but also a mammogram, and when my tests came back with good results, I was so relieved. In December of 2016, I had a pelvic exam by Dr. Riggs at the clinic. I made a 6 month follow-up appointment and will be at the Clinic in the near future. I feel it is the generosity of the people volunteering their time inside the clinic, and bringing that generosity outside your doors, that brought me there.I am 55 years old and more medical conditions are going to start happening. Through my journey, I experienced wonderful care everywhere I went, and at the Clinic everyone was terrific to deal with! I am a healthy individual that is very grateful to have a community of people to help me stay that way. I would like your supporters to see how the clinic not only helps those that are sick, but also those of us that are grateful to have a sense of relief knowing we have a place to go for help if needed. And it is the help offered that keeps me coming back.” – Diane S., McCullom Lake

PARTNERNORTHWEST HERALD – CRYSTAL LAKE, IL  – The Clinic has had the support of the Northwest Herald since our first Care4 Breast

Cancer 5K in 2001. They have graciously donated advertisement space every year, not only for the race, but for our galas as well. They have been instrumental in promoting both events, which has made our events both successful and well-known to the community. We are grateful that they are a long-standing partner of ours!

The Clinic survives on you, our donors and volunteers. Samantha’s volunteer story….Samantha Szum was introduced to volunteer opportunities through her mom, Julie, who is a great clinic nurse. Julie introduced her to our Volunteer Director Kathy Rauch and Executive Director Suzanne Hoban, and they quickly zoned in on what Samantha’s passions and interests were. She is a new NIU school graduate from the School of Art with an Illustration degree. While in her job search, she had some free time, and it was a perfect fit when she was asked to design a logo for our clinic values! Samantha had a fun time with the assignment. “I did the usual thumbnail-sketching thing. I asked for a description of the vision, then I let it seep in my head, kept it in my

prayers, and as soon as I started getting ideas, I grabbed for the nearest paper and pen. I gave the Clinic a few design choices, then I finalized the sketches they chose and they edited to their hearts content! I didn’t want them to have to settle on something they didn’t love. That’s my policy for everything I create, and because this is a particularly special cause, I insisted on keeping that standard. It’s not often a person meets such wonderful people.”“The design Samantha created was beyond what any of our staff could have anticipated! It is whimsical, fun, and inviting to see and behold. Immediately, our values logo was being implemented everywhere around the Clinic, because it is a likeable design that is easy to take great pride in!”, said Manager of Development and Social Media Cathy Patenaude.

“It feels great to leave my mark on a local nonprofit,

and to help such a good cause is my pleasure!”, said Samantha.

For Victoria and Jose, life is all smiles now because of you The factory where we had worked closed down, and we were out of jobs at the same time, remembers Jose Perez. “Instantly, my wife and I lost our insurance and we were very worried”, he shared. Jose’ wife, Victoria Paga, learned from a friend that the Clinic charged on a sliding scale based on income and that they don’t turn people away if they cannot afford their fee. “I was so relieved to know a Clinic like this was open when my husband and I needed it, and I can’t imagine what we would have done without it.” Unfortunately, they both remain uninsured because Victoria is self-employed as a house cleaner, and Jose is working part time. Over the years, she has been seen at the clinic for several chronic conditions. The high quality care given by Clinic staff has helped them both remain healthy and employed. When the new dental clinic opened, they were offered services by our staff, and were the very first dental patients.

“…..and I couldn’t afford the care”.Victoria had not visited a dentist in a very long time and, was in desperate need of a cleaning, and an evaluation for sensitive teeth. “Dental care is very expensive, and I couldn’t afford the care. I went to someone and they were charging a lot of money. But at the clinic it was very affordable, and the dentist is really good.” Jose, too, benefits from the care of volunteer dentist, Dr. Hagenbruch. “I was walking around toothless, because I couldn’t afford a partial. The way my smile looked was terrible. I stopped smiling, and felt down on myself. I became depressed, and it affected my whole life in a negative way.” However, in just a few shorts weeks, Jose was smiling again because Dr. Hagenbruch made him a new tooth. “Dr. Hagenbruch is a very good dentist who made me smile again!” In the interview, they reflected on how they feel. “Everyone is friendly, and they all have helped me so much with my medical needs, and now with my dental needs. I want to thank the Founder of the Clinic, Suzanne Hoban, for opening the Clinic for the uninsured. You guys have been a great help.” Jose added, “You all are truly the best of the best! You made me feel like family. Thank you to everyone who supports the clinic and for all you do. May God bless you all so that you may continue to do more for others like us. Victoria added, “I hope there are a lot more people like you that help others, and I thank you for your kindness.”
