Community group counts its blessingsNick Lesher’s community group

grew by leaps and bounds in 2012.When the couples currently in the

group met at a Couples’ Connection event at Southeast Christian Church in September 2011, none of them had children.

As the couples met each week and got to know each other and build rela-tionships, Nick and Kim Lesher were the first to share the good news that they were expecting a baby. Their son,

Samuel Harrison Lesher, was born July 1, 2012.

Micah and Angela Cain joined the group several months after it formed, but they too were expecting. Their son, Mason Alan Cain, was born July 30, 2012.

Soon other announcements followed, even though some of the couples previ-ously had difficulties conceiving. Prayer requests began to revolve around the tri-als and tribulations of pregnancy: pray for my upcoming ultrasound, pray for me

to get some sleep, pray for my glucose test to be OK, pray for my swollen feet.

Jacob and Mandy Glassner’s daughter, Novella Winter Glassner, was born Oct. 25, 2012. And three weeks later, Mike and Jennifer brought Tate Michael Green into the world on Nov. 12, 2012.

And the group isn’t finished.John and Camille Burgard’s yet-to-be-

named baby boy is due March 23.Community groups are based on Acts

2:42: “They devoted themselves to the

apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

Lesher’s group might just have to add another category: raising kids.

Piggy banks, pockets full of change, rolls of nickels and lots of pennies—all of it matters as children bring their offerings for missions to children’s wor-ship services.

The Elementary Ministry at South-east Christian Church is deliberate about teaching about missions and partnering with Local Missions, U.S. Missions and International Missions. Children’s Min-istry leaders Steve Young and Cheryll Kimbler have gone on short-term mis-sion trips to Poland and India to talk with partners and learn about needs.

In Louisville, Diane Mansfield coordi-nates mission outreach.

Each month has a different mission focus.

Last January, children gave their offerings to buy school uniforms for chil-dren at Stonebridge Residential School in India, which was founded by South-east mission partner Caleb Premanan-dam.

“The children really caught on to that,” Mansfield said. “They understand school uniforms because many wear them or their friends wear them, and they understood the fact that children who cannot afford uniforms cannot go to school.”

Eric Peterson heard about children in India when his daughter asked to do extra chores around the house to earn money for uniforms.

“In children’s church, they get a clear picture of what missions looks like,” Peterson said. “They love mission sto-ries, and they love giving to help.”

In February, Children’s Ministry is focusing on helping a new church plant in Lodz, Poland, where PROeM Minis-tries is working to plant a church in an area with few Christians.

“Throughout the month, we’ll be talking about what it means to plant a church,” Mansfield said. “Children care about that, especially as we talk about opening the Southwest Campus. They want children everywhere to hear about Jesus.”

In March, they’ll support The Orchard Group, which plants churches in the northeast. The focus of the children’s offering will be a church plant in Har-lem, an area of New York City that has been characterized by high crime, pov-erty, unemployment and poor health.

In Louisville, they’ll support outreach at the Portland Promise Center, which reaches out to the surrounding neigh-borhood with afterschool tutoring and

enrichment programs. At the center, chil-dren get help with homework, play sports, get a snack and learn that God loves them and has a plan for their lives.

Kimbler said offering time is a favorite part of children’s worship.

“It’s incredible to watch children’s excitement when they give to help some-body else,” Kimbler said. “I know God delights in seeing His children taking care of each other.”

Missions Ministry is not a one-way street.

Missions can involve the whole family as they pray together for missionaries, as they provide ways children can contrib-ute and as they consider taking a family mission trip.

Steve Young gives an early morning devotion for children and teachers. Videos and photos from these short-term mission trips help children in Louisville understand and visualize ministry. Last January, children’s offerings bought school uniforms for chil-dren at the school. Every month, Children’s Ministry focuses on a different mission partner in Kentuckiana, the U.S. or International Missions.
