the day was and what they learned (how to do something), kids fill out paperwork and go home

ACTIVITIES:

Kristyn & Mikell: Hand: First Aid for Kids Have the kids get into partners. Go over the basic first aid steps: Assess wound, (wash hands) clean wound, apply pressure, apply medicine, apply bandage. One of the adults will go around and draw a little wound on the children’s hand/arm. And they can practice the steps on each other.

Application: Kids can make a poster about the 5-step process to treating a minor wound, or can do a demonstration of the procedure of how to treat a wound at a fair or create their own first aid kit to take home.

Ashley & CourtneyHead: Problem SolvingThe children will learn how to use each other and their resources to balance the nails on a single nail and playing the Human Knot game.

Kaitlin & EloraHeart:Teach the importance of service and loyalty to others. Do a little heart service activity where they paint wooden hearts to give to people when they serve.15 minute teaching, 15 minutes activity

Page 3: Family and Consumer Sciences Portfolio - Home€¦ · Web viewEveryone wear black professional dress pants/skirts and a button up solid color top, with hair pulled back, like airline

Ask them what service means to themGive them a list with a couple service suggestions and have them come up with more Have them write down their definition of service and explain to a partner what the heart is for.Application: Make it a family or community service project and then they could present it at a fair.

Loyal HeartsThis activity is to create a wooden heart that can be passed around from person to person as they serve each other. This is to remind us that service is out of love and it is a way to show our loyalty, or care and support, for others.

Directions:1. Paint your own wooden heart.2. Choose someone you want to serve.3. Think of a way to serve them.4. Leave the heart with them or where the service was done so that they know you

love them. It is now their turn to serve someone and leave them the heart.

Chloe & MariahHealth: Nutrition, healthy eating using My PlateTitle: Healthy Snack Craft

Grade Level: 4-6 (US Standard)

Professional-Technical Content Area: Family and Consumer Sciences Subject: Mastering and balancing the basics of nutrition

Lesson Overview: This lesson will help students learn about the different food groups, and the importance of portioning. They will learn about balanced eating, and the health benefits of eating well. They will also make a healthy snack, to apply what they’ve learned.

Lesson Objectives: • Classify foods (according to Myplate food groups)• Food proportioning • How to follow directions

Assessment of Objectives: • Questions to check for understanding

What food group would this particular food (pick one) belong to?What is the right proportion for dairy according to Myplate? What are the five basic groups of food according to Myplate?

What are health benefits of eating healthily?

Time: 25 minutes

Materials: Sanitary wipes or hand sanitizer (wash hands), crackers or granola bars, grapes, celery, peanut butter, toothpicks, myplate worksheets

Lesson: 15 minutes of instruction, including worksheet (Chloe)Introduce myself to the class Ask introductory questions and have children answer each one with a partner What does it mean to be healthy? What do you do to be healthy? What are some habits you could improve on?

Draw the Food Plate on the board What is a fruit, a vegetable, a protein, a grain, dairy? Go through each of the parts of the plate (fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and proteins)Ask children the following questions:“Who is familiar with this drawing?” “What is it called?” “What do you know about this drawing?” Fill in the Food Plate by labeling each section with the correct category (fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy) Ask children what some of their favorite food items are from each food group

Give Students the following tips regarding the Food Plate• Half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, slightly more fruits than vegetables • About a quarter of your plate should be protein and about a quarter of your plate should be grains • When choosing foods makes sure to keep in mind variety, color and moderation • Choose whole fruits instead of fruit juices. Whole fruits have less calories and more fiber • Choose whole grains- refined and enriched grains aren’t as healthy for you because nutrients are lost in the processing process • Stay away from deli meats and processed meat because they contain high amounts of sodium

● Have my plate worksheet for them to color, fill out, and decorate by filling in their favorite foods in the proper categories

● Free printouts here: http://comprar-en-internet.net/worksheets/my-plate-worksheet.htm● Also need glue sticks and scissors, coloring/writing supplies

Make a healthy snack of: crackers/ or small granola bar, grapes, celery, peanut butter, toothpicks

Airplane Snacks

Yield: 1 servingIngredients:

● Celery stick● Graham Cracker● Grapes● Peanut Butter● Toothpick

Directions:Start out by cutting your celery to a length that is about 6 inches long, this doesn’t need to be exact. You could make mini airplane’s by using a smaller piece of celery.

Next, add your peanut butter to the the center part of the celery. After you have added your peanut butter you are ready to add the wheels to the airplane. You will need two grapes and a toothpick. Insert the toothpick into the celery.

Add one grape to each side to give the appearance of wheels on the sides of the airplane. Finally, place 1/4 of a graham cracker across the top of the celery as the wings.

Head: Critical Thinking and CommunicationTitle: Problem Solving

Grade Level: 4-6 (US Standard)

Professional-Technical Content Area: Family and Consumer Sciences Subject: Resource Management

Lesson Overview: This lesson will help students learn about the different food groups, and the importance of portioning. They will learn about balanced eating, and the health benefits of eating well. They will also make a healthy snack, to apply what they’ve learned.

Lesson Objectives: • Effective Communication• Problem solving through identifying the issues or areas of attention and working through them individually and in small groups. • How to follow directions

Assessment of Objectives: • Balancing nails in object lesson.

● Questions:○ Why is communication important?○ What other resources could you use to solve problems?○ Why is problem solving and communication an important skill to have?

Time: 25 minutes

Materials: Nails (Home Depot Package of Grip-rite #10 nails for $13.57 ) and Wood (2x4 prime whitewood stud $3.36)

Lesson: Courtney: Balanced Nails and Resource ManagementFor this activity, they are learning resource management.

1. Give the children 3 nails and a block of wood. Instruct the children to take one nail and hammer it in the center of the block of wood. Then instruct them to balance the other two nails on the first.

2. They won't be able to balance them, ask if they need help. They will say yes and then give them 7 more nails.

3. Then for those who still can’t balance them, then ask if they need help again and then ask who they could ask for help.

Ask them when was it they were able to finally balance the nails. ● Was it when they received the other nails?● Was it when someone helped them out?● Would they have been able to do it without the other nails or people helping them?

The things and people that help us are called resources. Resources help us complete tasks, progress in a position or station, and solve problems. What were the resources in this activity? Nails and People. What are some resources that you have that you can use in your lives to help you?

● Money● Parents● Friends● Family● Transportation

● Books● Internet● Computers● Phone

Ashley: Human KnotIntroduce the importance of working in groups and talking with each other. What good communication and teamwork look like. Explain that we will be playing a game that will help us in our ability to communicate and work together while solving a problem. Split children into two groups of 10. They will be playing the human knot game, which is a great game to help with problem solving and

communication skills. It includes everyone in the circle and makes the players communicate with one another.

How to Play:

1. Have all the players stand in a circle, facing inward.2. Tell everyone to reach their right arm towards the center and grab someone else's hand. Make

sure no one grabs the hand of the person right next to them.3. Next, have everyone reach their left arm in and grab someone else's hand. Again, make sure it's

not the person right next to them or the person in their other hand.4. The players need to work together to untangle the human knot without letting go of any hands.

The goal is to end up in a perfect circle again. They can go over or under each other's arms, or through legs if needed!

● The first time it is played the children will be instructed on how to start from the directions above. The children will then be instructed to first accomplish the task of untangling themselves without talking to each other. Once they have accomplished this we will ask, “ was that an effective way to work together?” “How could that have gone better?” (If it seems to be taking longer or we are short on time have them pause and ask them what they need in order to be able to be more effective in untangling themselves. They may say help, communication, etc. Then have them start using what they suggested. Allow them to talk and share ideas with each other.)

● The second time the children will be able to talk to each other and share ideas of how they should move in order to untangle themselves. Once they are untangle ask the children, “How did that work better compared to the first time?” What are some things you learned from that activity about communication and working together?”

Price per child for this activity: $1.64

The Human Knot Game

The Human Knot Game is a great game to help with problem solving skills. It includes everyone in the circle and makes the players communicate with one another.

How to Play:

1. Have all the players stand in a circle, facing inward.2. Tell everyone to reach their right arm towards the center and grab someone

else's hand. Make sure no one grabs the hand of the person right next to them.3. Next, have everyone reach their left arm in and grab someone else's hand.

Again, make sure it's not the person right next to them or the person in their other hand.

4. The players need to work together to untangle the human knot without letting go of any hands. The goal is to end up in a perfect circle again. They can go over or under each other's arms, or through legs if needed! Encourage them to do whatever they want and talk it through, as long as they don't break the chain in the process.

The best part after finishing is that it can be played again, because every human knot game is different and you can get more creative with where you grab hands to make it more challenging.

Balancing Nails

1. Hammer one of the nails into the center of the block of wood. It’s a good idea to measure and pre drill the hole to avoid splitting the wooden block. It’s important that this nail be standing as straight as possible.

2. Place the wood block flat on a desk or table. The challenge is to balance all of the nails on the standing nail in the wooden block. To win the challenge, none of the 9 nails may touch the wood block, the desk or table, or anything else that might help hold them up. No additional equipment other than the wood block and the nails may be used.

3. The trick to balancing the nails has to do with their center of gravity or balancing point. Lay one nail on a flat surface and place the other nails across this nail, head to head as shown in the photograph. Finally, place another nail on top of this assembly, head to tail with the second nail.

4. Carefully pick up the assembly and balance it on the upright nail.
