A desire or the up north

liestyle and a passion or ooring

led Bernie and Tina Gehrke into

    the ooring business in Cadillac.

    Aordable Flooring opened its

doors in 1994 and is now selling

ooring to its third generation o

    customers.

But or the Gehrkes its been

    very much a roller-coaster ride o

    an experience.

    Our biggest period o growth

was about 8 years ago, said

    Bernie. We were booming during

    the housing bubble.

We kept our doors open during

    the building bust, said Bernie.

We even managed to help put 4kids through college. That was a

    tremendous reward.

    For Bernie, who grew up

    working in his dads business,

    customer satisaction and

    aordable prices have been

a big actor in the success o

    Aordable Flooring. Taking an

active role in the business is

    also very important.

We have our hands on everything, he

said. We also ollow through on everything. That

commitment is crucial. That hands-on approach is part o the beneft o

    owning your own business.

Keeping up with changes in the economy is the

true challenge o all this, said Bernie. But we

been here or 19 years, and our business is continuinto grow.

Belle Oakes Living Center invites you to celebrate

our 10 year anniversary along with Lake To Lake

Transportation - celebrating 4 years and Bella Rose

Rehabilition & Aquatic Center - celebrating 2 years

    We Care ThroughConnections

The idea for Belle Oakes was simple for Joeland Esther Nederhood: they wanted to create anenvironment where individuals could live out

the best years of their lives. Then they saw a need for a personal careagency with high standards that would beaffordable and committed to its clients 24/7.Thus, Blue Lagoon was born of necessity, as aseparate personal care agency for the residentsof Belle Oakes and the rest of the community.

It then became obvious that the tenants ofBelle Oakes would need a safe, reliable formof transportation to bring them to medicalappointments. Lake to Lake Transportationwas formed to meet that need for Belle Oakesresidents as well as the surrounding community.

From there, Esther saw a purpose forexpanding the communitys rehabilitation

options. The Nederhoods set out to build a state-of-the-art outpatient therapy facility for peopleof all ages, with an aquatic center. So BellaRose was constructed right down the street from BelleOakes.

All four of the companies saw their greatest periodof growth between 2011 and 2013. Belle Oakes openeda new wing in November of last year, which increasedthe number of apartments by 50%. Blue Lagoon sawenough growth in personal care this past year to doubletheir care staff. Lake to Lake has increased dramaticallyin size, now covering over 40 counties across the state.Bella Rose has doubled their clientele in the last year.Over the last three years, Joel and Esther have gonefrom 35 employees to over 110 and counting.

The key to all of the Nederhoods success is theE.S.T.H.E.R. Care Model: Enthusiastic, Spiritual,Trusting, Healthy, Emotional, and Respectful. Thesekey concepts drive their focus and purpose. Their

mission is to, promote and maintain the privacdignity, comfort, optimum independence and safety oeach individual served.

The Nederhoods went from a small Mom & Pobusiness to something big very quickly. It was challenge to learn to trust in their team of leaders, anto reorganize the structure of the business rapidly. Ispite of these challenges, all four businesses have womultiple prestigious awards for their services. Its cleathat theyve adapted to the rapid change, and channeletheir efforts into something as successful as it is weintended.

Belle Oakes and Lake to Lake are located at 235South LaChance Road, and Bella Rosa is located at 19South LaChance Road in Lake City.

Quality Hometown Care, for a Healthier You!

In 1882, Charles Bostick opened his

doors to the residents o Manton, then

the County Seat o Wexord County, and

began a tradition thats spanned more

    than 140 years.

    Five generations later, Bosticks Drug

Store still stands and operates in much

the same way it did in 1882: by keeping

    Manton healthy.

While the name and the business

    remain the same, ownership has

    changed amilies. Mike Moft

    purchased the business rom the

Bostick amily in 2011 and continues to

    provide convenient pharmacy services

    to local patients.

No one in the Bostick amily was

interested in the pharmacy proession, said Moft. I saw a good opportunity

or success in retail pharmacy, so I

made the move to purchase it.

Today, Moft is the sole proprietor

and runs the business by himsel in much

the same way it has always been run.

I try to give the utmost care and attention to every

patient that walks through my ront door, said Moft.

We oer ree delivery and ater hours service as

    well.

Whatever he is doing is working. In 2014, Bostick

Drug Store will enjoy a 400% increase in business

since 1980.Moft credits the increase to the nature o a local

    pharmacy.

Owning a small, amily-run business allows me to

oer that small town serviceto do the little thing

that only a community based pharmacy like th

can do, he said. We just give really good custom

    service.

Being the little guy is not without its challenge

however. With mail order pharmacies, insuranc

reimbursement issues and the notion that the big bo

stores are cheaper than local stores; its oten difcu

to keep customers coming through the doors.

Bostick Drug Store is located at 117 West Main Stre

In 2008, Stacy Altman was already running abar in Manton. She saw an opportunity to expand, and thought it might be a good idea to invest inanother location. The moment to act arrived,

and Altman bought the Bucksnort Bar in Mesickrom Jim Fiester in 2008.

Altmans business runs on compassion, andthe help o her amily.

My parents help me a tremendous amount, said Altman. My mother does my daily running, and my dad does my daily maintenance.

Even with all the help, though, Altman ndshersel struggling to stay on top o it all. But noteven in the midst o economic challenges doesAltman back down.

I have taken a ull-time job so I dont have tolet anyone go, she said.

Altmans selfessness is driven byher empathy. She knows what itslike to deal with economic strugglesrsthand. She takes pride in beingable to help others.

The biggest challenge theBucksnort aces is a tough economy. She knows her customers sometimeshave to choose between a gallon omilk or a couple o drinks.

But, even with a ull schedule, shesactually adopted another amily, andprovided two additional amilieswith enough presents to give theirkids an amazing Christmas.

I try to help as many people, customers, employees

and vendors as I can, said Altman. Thats just mypersonality.

Altman carries it a step urther in her business practice. She nds value in being adaptive or her customers and

her employees, changing menu itemas requently as possible to keecustomers interested.

We can make changes in a snao your ngers, she said. We try help when someone needs to changshits or has amily issues.

    4 C CHALLENGE:

Keith Burkholder has been in the

uneral business or a long time. In

    1979, he purchased and rebranded

    the uneral home that employed

him, and ounded his frst company.

Being rom Lake City, Keith and his

wie Norma were driven to start

    their uneral home in McBain

by the appeal o the small town

community. Their main goal is to

    oer service that is unequaled

at a cost that amilies can aord.

    They also oer alternative choices

or amilies that wish to have less-

    traditional uneral services.

    Honesty and integrity are

    the principles that guide Keith

Burkholder and his amily. Theytake pride in their attention to

their customers varied needs. They arent araid to

adapt to the changing attitudes o their customers,

even as their wishes evolve into new and dierent

things that the uneral industry isnt used to doing.

The Burkholders have an abundance o sympathy

when it comes to younger amilies in particular. In

their experience, the older amilies seem to handle

the high cost o a uneral with a little more ease than

the younger amilies, who tend to be less prepared

or the loss both emotionally and fnancially.

    The Burkholders accommodate their customers

in a number o other unique ways, as well. For one, theyll perorm services at any time o day, on any

day o the week. They dont charge a service ee

or holiday, Sunday or nighttime services, either.

Additionally, they only buy American-made casket

rather than buying cheaper models constructe

outside the United States. They understand how har

it is or their customers to survive in todays hars

    economic conditions.

Having very little monetary appetite of their ow

they make what they can to keep their busine

running. Their personal values guide their busines

resulting in a company that runs on compassion an

    empathy.

You may not know it, but the

    Cadillac News wasnt always called

the Cadillac News. In act, C.L.

Frazier ounded it over 140 years

ago under the name, The ClamLake News. His riend George A.

    Mitchell, who ounded the Village

o Clam Lake, encouraged him to

start the business. When the Village

o Clam Lake was renamed the City

o Cadillac, the Clam Lake News

became the Cadillac News. As the

    longest standing business in town,

the Cadillac News is as old as the

    city it serves.

    The Cadillac News has

    changed hands a ew times

in the last 140 years well,at least in the frst 54. Ever

    since T.O. Huckle bought

    controlling interest in the

    business in 1926, the Cadillac

    News has been locally owned

    and operated by the Huckle

    amily. Right up until the

    current owners, Chris and

    Katy Huckle, purchased the

stock o the company in 2003.

For us here at the Cadillac

    News, amily has always

been the central pillar o our

Believe it or not, the Cadillac

Like many small business owners, Doug

Sengelaub grew up in a amily business

learning the ropes and developing his own

    ideas.

In 1996, he took those ideas and ounded

DouGlass: a ull service glass business in

    Cadillac.

Ater working in my parents glass

business, I wanted to branch out. I wanted

to try things a dierent way and in a

    shop.

With the help and support o his wie,

Melinda, Doug moved into the ormerGarn Glass building. DouGlass was born.

Throughout the years, Doug has grown the business

signifcantly. First by adding autoglass in 1998 and

insulated glass production the next year.

We do all kind o glass here, said Doug. In 1999 we

built a new acility to produce high quality insulated

glass panels right here in Cadillac.

But despite having the ability to do big glass jobs,

DouGlass keeps its ocus on the individual customer.

I always dreamed o massaging in thecommunity.

For Sara Marr, owning her own massageclinic truly is a dream come true. She claims

she happened to be at the right place at theright time to buy an existing business.

The year was 2004 and Sara was workingin a actory when the opportunity becameavailable. She purchased the business andgot to work providing massage servicesto the Cadillac and the surroundingcommunities.

I dont see ailure as an option, she said.So I worked hard to build [the business]into what it is today.

In 2010, Saras sister Hilda Schut, a nurse, returned to the area and joined Sara as anindependent contractor. For Marr, brining

her sister on board spawned the largest growth in herbusiness. The last three years have been great. Hilda and I

make a great team wherever we go and whatever wedo, said Marr. We stay busy because we both careabout each clients needs. We listen to them and treateach one as an individual.

Marr credits their upbringing with providing herand her sister with a strong do it right attitude.

We were raised the same, with the same work ethic.Growing up on a dairy arm teaches you that, saidMarr who also says working with amily is not withoutchallenges.

The pair oten helps with their 90-year-old mother, and both want and need to be with her at certain times

due to health issues. They oten fnd it difcult to fndsomeone to fll in or them.

It has been a challenge to fnd another massagetherapist that shares our work ethic. Not everyone

wants to do things the way we do here, said Marr. For Marr and Schut, building and maintaining business takes more than just serving the clients yoalready have.

Givers gain, said Marr who uses that phrase a guiding principle or her business. Not everyonbelieves in that principle. Theyre not willing to dcharity events or beat the street to gain clients.

When asked what sets her business apart rom hcompetitors, Marr answered with enthusiasm.

We are one o only a couple o places in towthat are a true massage clinicthats all we do, shsaid. We can take insurance cases, PIP and WorkerCompensation. We also make house calls or those whcant travel away rom the home.

The Highpoint story began in 1986

when Harvey and Harold Koning saw an

In 1991, Jerry Koop Sr. became a partner

and operator and began to grow the business.

Trouble suraced in early 1993, when

the ofce manager was ound guilty o

    The nineties were good

    In 2000, structural changes

    within General Motors oered

    Highpoint another challenge.

    GM decided to quit making

    Oldsmobile and Pontiac, said

Koop. Those were our two leading

    volume vehicles.

The trouble continued when GM went bankrupt and

    Highpoint lost their Cadillac Dealership.

We ought the Cadillac decision and eventually

won, but we were without [the brand] or a ull year,

said Koop. For the Koops, customer loyalty has helped them

Sadly, Dale passed away in 2004 ater

the 1970s, the last fve years have been the companysgreatest period o growth to date. The way Tim and

Sandy see it, they owe it all to their conscientious

consumers. They realize that people are starting to

care more about where their meat comrom, how it was raised and ed, and wh

Fortunately, L & J was taking quality me

    McNallys Store has

    been a mainstay in the

    McBain Community for

    more than 25 years.Established in 1986,

    the store was actually

    born out of a small

    tragedy.

    We owned the

    building and leased

    it to a restaurant that

    didnt make it, said

    Bruce McNally Jr. We

    didnt always intend

to do this, it just sort

    of happened because

    we had this emptybuilding.

    At the time, Bruce

    Sr. was given lemons

    and decided to make

    lemonade.

There wasnt another store in town. Dad saw a

need and decided to turn the empty building into

    this store, said Bruce Jr.

Throughout the years, McNallys has become a

hub of activity in the McBain community.

Its nice being part of a small town like this,

said Bruce Jr. Everyone is on a first-name basis.

But for Bruce, thats also one of the biggestchallenges.

In a small town, everyone knows everyone elses

business, he said. So its important to always b

    fair and honest with people.

Fairness and honesty have always been guidin

principles at McNallys. Its a theme that the

extend to their employees as well.

Our employees are treated like part of th

family, said Bruce Jr. We try to be easy going an

that makes it a very nice place to work.

Fred Flemming saw a need in

the community that was not being

adequately met. So in 1994, armed with

his years o dairy eed sales experience,

he opened the doors to Northwoods

    Feed and Supply in Cadillac.

The area needed a eed store with a

large selection o premium eeds and

    supplies, said Fred. The Cadillac

area was lacking this kind o store. And

with my background in eed sales, it

    was a natural progression.

    For Flemming, staying

    in tune with the changing

    market and a keeping a

    diverse inventory has

    helped his business

continue to grow. Yet, thoseactors remain some o his

    biggest challenges as well.

PAPER, PLASTICS, METAL & MOREPadnos believes is a strong value for paper, plastics, metals, electronics,

and more as a renewable resource.

    In 1905, Louis Padnos emigrated

from the Netherlands all the way to

Holland, Michigan. He was a peddler,

    selling tools and clothing. When

he came to Michigan, he opened

    shop buying, selling and bartering

    trinkets and odds and ends.

    The Padnos business has come

a long way in 108 years. After

    experiencing their most successful

period of growth between 1997 and

2010, Padnos (now a salvage and

    recycling facility) touts over 500

    employees working at 20 locations.

    Though the company has changed

    drastically in the last century,

    one value has remained steadfast:

Padnos is a family business. Withover 500 employees, its obvious that not every one at

Padnos is related by bloodbut that doesnt stop the

company from treating them as if they were. They

have a strong focus on the human resources approach

taking care of their employees both inside and outside

    of work.

The Padnos family has always been committed to

philanthropy and education. After serving in World

War II, Seymour Padnos moved back home to work

with his father and brother at the family business (then

titled the Louis Padnos Iron and Metal Company).

He went on to graduate from Hope College, and he

later received an Honorary Doctorate of HumaneLetters from Grand Valley State University. Together

with his wife, Esther, the Padnos started the Esther

and Seymour Padnos Foundation, which supports

many projects. Today, the Seymour and Esther Padno

Hall of Science, dedicated in their name, is the hea

of the Grand Valley State University science program

Padnos invests in their employees, taking the

in with whatever skills they might have an

encouraging them to grow and improve those skill

They provide extensive on-the-job training, and eve

employees. They consider it a privilege to give peop

We were only the second station in

Gerald Reedy was already a seasoned

businessman when he decided to open

Reedys Restaurant in McBain with his son

    Stephen in early 2013.

With 41 years o amily business under his

belt (29 with Stephen) Reedy was ready or

    retirement.

But when Stephen saw a need or an

upscale amily restaurant in the McBain

area, Gerald quickly got board with the idea.

For Stephen, a amily run business was

    the only way to go.

There are no politics in the workplace

this way, he said. We get to

set the tone and work hard

to be ree o polices that we

    disagree with.

But or Gerald, being inbusiness has changed over

    the years.

    Business today is very

    much an uphill battle, he

said. I liken it to Calebs

    request to Joshua to let

him fght the battle up the

    mountain. Today we are

    being regulated and taxed

such a high rate that doing

business can be a treacherous endeavor.

But or the Reedys the value outweighed the risk, and

in early 2013, Reedys Restaurant opened or business.Very ew amily restaurants go to the lengths that

In a world plagued by ast paced service and poor

bedside manner, one local optometrist continues to

do business the old-ashioned way: by providing top-

notch, personalized service to generations o patients.Dr. Richard Melstrom has become a local institution.

Having treated patients or nearly 40 years, he has

seen generations come and go. At a point in his

career when many doctors start to slow down and

think about retirement, Melstrom is experiencing

    rapid growth.

The ofce continues to grow, said Melstrom, and

Im now treating my ourth generation o patients.

For Melstrom, his job is not just about examining

    the eyes.

I learned a long time ago that an exanimation is

an integration o science and art, he said. Yes we

are examining your eyes, but we are also treating

    you, the patient.

This holistic approach is, or Mesltrom, what sets

    him apart as an optometrist.

I pay attention to what the patient says, said

Melstrom. Indeed there is a science to the exam,

but there is an art to listening. The diagnosis is the

integration o these two things. Thats the dierence.

Dr. Melstrom didnt just stumble upon a career in

optometry. In act, as the son o a practicing optometrist,

Melstroms education began at an early age.

I learned early on how important it is to be

dedicated to patient care, said Melstrom. Ive built

my practice around that and have become known or

my conscientious commitment to my patients.Melstrom received his education at Northern

In 1977, Louis and Joan Feister moved

to Cadillac rom Detroit and purchased

the Roaring 20s Saloon. With Louis came

good ood and excellent service, which

turned the business rom a small bar

and local hangout into a ull restaurant.

But thats not all Louis Feister

brought to Cadillac. Along with good

business practice, Louis brought a wie

and eight children, including his son

    James.

James and Dawn, who now own the

    Roaring 20s, purchased the business

rom Louis in 1997. They are proud o

    James athers accomplishments. He

has a lot o respect or the man that

picked up and moved across the state

with a large amily and no experienceowning a restaurant, and turned it into

the business that continues to thrive

    today.

Although the Roaring 20s Saloon bar

& restaurant has been in business under the Feister

name in Cadillac since 1977, theyve never seen as

much success as theyre seeing right now.

James strives to create a uniquely rewarding

atmosphere or his employees, setting his

establishment apart rom the competition. For one,

he pays his servers and bartenders more than other

places might. He wants his work amily to look

orward to coming to work.James sees a serious beneft to running a amily

business. He hopes one day to see his own children

begin working at the restaurant, and eventually take

the reigns to run the business on their own, so he ca

    retire like his ather did.

Even though working with amily has its advantage

James recognizes that there are some disadvantag

    as well.

Its more emotional, said James. Family is easi

    to get angry with.

As many o us know, working closely to the ones yo

love and live with can be a challenge. The Roaring 20s Saloon is located at 210 Sout

    My grandmother used

But being the boss isnt without its challenges.

    Don Sprik had thought about

opening a business or a long

time. So when the timing was

right, he and his amily put

the idea in motion. Earlier this

year, they opened the doors to

    Spriks Auto Sales.

Don runs his Auto Sales shop

with the help o his wie, Cindy,

    who does the bookkeeping,

and his two sons, Rydder and

    Jaxson, who handle sales.

    They operate on a oundation

    o strong aith, starting every

    morning with a prayer.

    Even though they very

    recently opened, operating

a local business is no newconcept or Don Sprik. In the

past, Dons grandather, Edward Sprik, sold arm

    implements in Manton.

In those days, says Don, it was common or your

children to work or the amily business.

Dons ather Don, and his uncle Harold did just

    that.

Then, sometime during the 1940s, the Spriks

purchased the Chevrolet dealership in Lake City.

There is a photograph o that Chevrolet Dealership

hanging on the wall o their ofce today.

Its hard to believe, says Don, but we have heard

several stories rom some nice Lake City olks, [who]stop in ater seeing our name on the sign to give us a

    little history lesson.

Don and his amily strive to keep these positive

stories alive by adding pages to the Sprik Fami

    Business Book.

The Spriks recognize how important the

customers are to them, and they hold that the

customers will always come frst. Their goal

to serve their community by supplying goo

dependable vehicles at reasonable prices. They tre

their customers with the same respect that wa

shown by Dons ather and uncle, and his grandath

    beore them.

So i you get a chance, head out to Spriks Auto Sal

and share your story. Or check out their inventor

For Trent Stange, owning his own

business is very much a family affair.

Together with his wife Kimberly, his

son Sebastian and his late uncle Clay

    Blanchard, Stange has transformed

the Pointe West Mall into a thriving

hub of activity in the heart of

    Cadillac West.

Having grown up in Cadillac, I

remember, as a kid, how busy the

mall used to be, said Stange. Over

the years, I watched as business

after business moved out and the

mall sat empty. After driving by and

seeing the empty shell, I thought

about what I would do if I owned a

prime piece of real estate like that.

For Stange, the answer wassimple: reopen the mall with an ice-

cream shop, a pizza place, a coffee

    shop and a hair salon.

These were all things I saw

succeeding in the strip malls around where I live

today (Rockford), said Stange, who also credits his

late uncle for motivating him to purchase the property.

Stange attended an auction where the property was

to be auctioned off in late November 2011, but had

only planned to watch the process, not be part of it.

By the end of the day, and after some prodding by

his uncle, Clay Blanchard, he was the owner of the

strip mall.Together with his wife, son and uncle, Stange

went to work removing trash and refurbishing the

laundromat that was already on site.

Were not afraid to get dirty

said Stange. We replaced the roo

right away, my wife renovated th

    Laundromat and we cleaned u

the rest of the units. We cou

not have done it without the he

of my uncle who recently passe

away. He was excited to see th

    corner come alive.

And come alive it has, with

    new leases, including the coffe

shop, ice cream parlor, hair salo

    and pizza place, Pointe We

Mall is back in business and h

    quickly become a destinatio

    for customers in and travelin

    through Cadillac West.

But for Stange, a successfbusiness is not just about makin

    money, but the challenge o

    turning something around an

making it successful and to he

    others be successful as well.
