The Chicago Mosaic SchoolSince it was founded in early 2005, The Chicago Mosaic School has become the center of education for Mosaic Arts in the United States. As the first and only school of its kind, CMS provides opportunities for artists interested in the serious study with an academic, materially-oriented approach to art education in the World Master tradition. CMS gives artists, teachers, and enthusiasts a place to explore all facets of mosaics—from classical reproduction to contemporary abstraction. CMS hosts some of the worlds most influential mosaic instructors. The school is committed to providing an inspirational and creative environment within our wonderful 7500+ square arts facility which houses classrooms, artist studios, library and conference room, student lounge and The Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics. The Chicago Mosaic School serves as an educational source for lectures, tours, demonstrations and presentations from local, national and international artists. We invite you into a thriving creative community that can offer you a mosaic art education like nowhere else in the world.

COMMUNITY OUTREACHCMS is active in bringing the art form of mosaic into schools, community centers, public parks, and playgrounds throughout Chicago and the surrounding areas. CMS preserves and promotes mosaic art through school programs, like After School Matters, community partnerships, and teacher training programs. Our trained instructors are uniquely experienced in working with diverse populations of all ages. The Chicago Mosaic School has built relationships with art schools and universities like Columbia College, Northeastern University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2012, CMS partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago to create a video about the ancient mosaic making process and art techniques as it relates to their ancient art collection and the mosaic “ Man Leading a Giraffe” (fifth century CE). CMS strives to create durable, sustainable mosaics that will withstand the elements in all climates and offers consultations with organizations to create well made works. CMS is supported in part by grants, donations, CMS Members and Sponsors and people like you.

GoCMThe Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics is permanently housed within the CMS and is Chicago’s only space dedicated to showcasing local, national, and international mosaic art exhibitions year round. Visit www.chicagomosaicschool.com for upcoming shows and updates.

Students will complete one mosaic each day, producing distinct textures that reflect a variety of thought, sensation, and emotion. This workshop is geared toward students familiar with both the direct method in thinset and the use of the hammer and hardie who would like to improve their skills and increase their artistic vocabulary. Students will learn to work in sections by ‘dividing’ their cartoon and to create work using a thick mortar bed for their tessera. The class will discuss the different kinds of thinset and their properties, see how to transfer the drawing, color the mortar, how to find the correct thickness of the mortar bed, and how deep to set the tesserae, etc. During this 3-day workshop, students will work on a 12 ”x 14” substrate and are encouraged to bring a drawing, sketch or pictures from which to choose a final image. Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –History and Reproduction: Classical Practices with Allesandro Lugari and Matteo RandiCMS is proud to offer the outstanding opportunity to work with two Italian mosaic experts, Allesandro Lugari and Matteo Randi–for a workshop that directly connects ancient mosaic works with contemporary studio practices. Through a series of lectures, students will learn about Greek and Roman works, patterns and design, and the influence those practices had upon the Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna. Students will then create reproductions using the direct method with a contemporary approach. Participants will create 2 projects during this 5-day workshop, making connections between the past and present through materials and process. Professor Allesandro Lugari has taken part in restoration projects all over the world, spanning from North Africa to Latin America. Lugari has worked alongside some of the greatest experts in the field and is a renowned Italian mosaicist, lecturer and curator of Mosaic Arts. Co-teaching is CMS Educational Director, Matteo Randi. Their combined expertise coupled with in-depth analysis of historical contexts in mosaics is an extraordinary opportunity for every student wanting to move into their contemporary practice with an understanding of the past. All materials and use of tools are included in the cost of the workshop. Enrollment is limited to 12. $700

Visiting artists Seminars

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –Wet Carved Concrete Workshop with Elder G. JonesElder Jones came to The Chicago Mosaic School to teach the Carved Concrete technique–a process that was used by artisans early last century to make architectural elements. Carving wet concrete is a method of sculpting that produces a durable piece of art. The sand and cement mixture sits in a form until stiff and then the slowly hardening material is shaped by slicing and scraping. No power tools or hammer and chisel are required. This is an excellent method for producing sculptural forms that can be used for 3D mosaic work. Individuals will be able to make a small sculpture or planter about the size of a five gallon bucket. Each student will keep their (roughly forty pound) sturdy, weather tolerant creation. Carving tools will be provided to participants and materials will be included in the cost of the class. $350

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –Design Fundamentals for Mosaics with Sue GiannottiJoin artist Sue Giannotti for this 3-day intensive workshop and learn how to use the principles and elements of art to make your mosaics even better. With numerous hands-on exercises, Ms. Giannotti will teach value, color and andamento, fundamental design elements and principles (e.g. focal point, repetition), material selection and planning, and how to work your cartoon and better preplan. While ideal for representational work, the concepts apply to all types of mosaics. Even if you think you cannot draw, this workshop will teach techniques to improve the flow of your work. Designed for those with little or no formal art education, participants can range from beginners to advanced mosaicists. Instead of making a mosaic during the course, students will create a hands-on book with ample projects from the exercises and leave with that book, beginning supplies, and their own mosaic-ready cartoon incorporating concepts from the course. If you are up for a design boot camp and would like to learn how to incorporating design fundamentals and preparation can increase your satisfaction of the end result, please join us. The instructor will contact registered participants with details on pre-class preparation. Class size is limited to 12 students. $375

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –Large Scale Mosaics with Gary DrostleCMS welcomes London based artist Gary Drostle back for this exclusive opportunity to learn about creating large scale mosaic projects. This 4-day workshop addresses considerations, organization and logistics that go into producing large scale and public works. Students learn the indirect technique of using paper as a temporary support for creating large scale mosaics.

The technique enables the creation of larger works off-site and in smaller sections and is particularly useful for creating floor mosaics and working with community groups. The technique is also widely used for creating wall and ceiling mosaics.

The course will also cover: design considerations; creating a full scale cartoon; selection of suitable materials; project planning; making glue; determining Andamento; progressing the works; sectioning the mosaic; organization and logistics; paper faced mosaics in transit; site set-up; site lay out; equipment; health and safety; professional installation; fixing; paper removal; grouting; troubleshooting; snagging and much more. As much of the course as possible will be taught using hands-on practical work with each student creating their own mosaic panel.

Gary has been creating large scale mosaics using the paper faced reverse technique for over twenty five years, undertaking major commissions across the UK, USA, Canada, and South America. His work has won numerous awards including the National Tile Contractors Association (USA) award for best mosaic in 2011 and the SAMA MAI Best in Show award 2013. $600
