The following six tables list the 25 bowlers with the most games bowled for the past 30 years, 25

years, 20 years, 15 years, 10 years, and 5 years. It doesn’t mean that the listed bowlers bowled

each and every year during the time periods covered - just that their number of cumulative games

for that period are among the top 25 of current Commercial League members. All lists include

only bowlers who bowled at least 9 games in the 2016-17 Commercial League season, displays each

listed bowler’s composite Commercial League average for the referenced time span, and shows how

that composite average ranks with the other 24 bowlers listed for that same period of time.

Some observations concerning the preceding tables and my supporting data files:

Teammates Scott Williams (3105 games) and Don Freeman (3006 games)

have the most games bowled on the 30-year list. Scott Miller is third

on the 30 year list, 385 games behind Don.

As usual, Scott Williams leads the 30, 25 and 20-year lists in games

bowled. Once again Scott had perfect attendance this year, as he has

had in twenty-three of the thirty years he has bowled in the

Commercial League, including perfect attendance the last nine years.

Luis Pinto missed two weeks this season but still leads the 15-year

list in games bowled. Luis has missed only five nights in the

eighteen years he has bowled full-time in the Commercial League

starting in the 1999-2000 season, with perfect attendance in fourteen

of those seasons.

Mike Leach leads the 10-year list, missing only two nights over the

last ten seasons.

John Holtzclaw, Scott Williams and David Kunkel are the only three

league members with perfect attendance the past five seasons.

Mike Manolis appears in each of the six tables and holds the highest

average for four of the six time periods and is second high average

for the other two. Carl Armstrong edges Mike out for high average on

the 20-year list (213.36 to 213.23) and Andrew Blackmore out averaged

Mike on the 5-year list (223.93 to 222.40).

2016-17 Commercial League Perfect Attendance Sixteen bowlers maintained a perfect attendance record during the year, five

in ‘A’ and eleven in ‘B’. Pre-bowled and post-bowled matches count towards

perfect attendance, as does a night when a bowler bowls only one or two games.

HOT STREAKS and NOT-SO-HOT STREAKS DURING THE SEASON I define a streak as four or more consecutive weeks of winning or losing 20 or

more points each week. By that definition there were twelve ‘hot’ streaks and

eight ‘not-so-hot’ streaks this season. Team #17 was the streakiest team in

the league as they had two winning streaks after starting the year with a 6-

week losing streak. Below are all this season’s team winning and losing

streaks and associated composite won/lost records.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM WEEK #36 OF 36 – 3 MAY 2017

Congratulations to our 2016-2017 league champions, team #14, Bethesda Navy.

They won the first two games in their match with team # 4, Making Turkeys Gr8

Again, building up a 73-pin advantage on total pins after game two. Team # 4

won the third game but couldn’t catch team #14 for total pins and the

championship match ended with team #14 winning 20 points. The battle of second-

place teams was much closer with team # 1, 3NC, prevailing with a 20-point win

against team #17, James Gang The. Those two teams were tied on points at 8

apiece after game two and separated by only 3 total pins. Team # 1 ended up

winning game three by 28 pins to finish the season in third place overall.

Kudos to each of the top four teams on having a fine season!

There were only two super headliners in week 36. Michelle Booth led the way

with a very nice 763 scratch series. Don Nicholls Jr ended the year with his

high scratch series of the season, a 732 set. Gabe Kiblin’s 278 third game was

the high scratch game in week 36. Justin Nicholls had a 681 scratch series to

earn star-of-the-week honors at an incredible 243 pins over his average. Justin

won first place in the high handicap series category as his 918 handicap series

was 64 pins higher than the previous high in that category. Great bowling

Justin!

Andrew Blackmore (637) had the league high average with a 229.2 mark. Gabe

Kiblin (669) finished second-high average at 221.3. Robert Diggs ended up

third-high average at 218.2 and Glenn MacCullough was right behind him with the

fourth high average at 218.1. Hollis McMullen had already locked up the

individual points won category and ended with a total of 92 points. Margaret

Shifflett finished second in the category with 89.5 points won. Curtis Stewart

(83 points) finished third and Glenn Feagans (81.5 points) finished fourth in

the individual points won category.

The other key matches in the final week were the contests between the third and

fourth place teams within each division. In ‘A’, team # 8, A/R Funding, had a

nice team handicap series with a 2945 total and won 28 points to overtake team

# 6 for third place. On the ‘B’ side, team #18, Myer Connex, had a huge first

game (1024) against team #15, Seis Manos, and then held on for a 16-16 split on

points to ensure team #18 the third-place finish. Team # 3, Gamecocks, had week

36’s high team series handicap score with a 3064 total (Don Nicholls Jr 732 and

Justin Nicholls 681).

FOUR-IN-A-ROW 600+ CLUB Andy Blazejewski’s low series while subbing this season was 612 and he ended the

season having fourteen-in-a-row. Bob Bean (669) finished with the longest

current string of 600s+ among our league’s regular bowlers with thirteen-in-a-

row. Josh Hurdle (620) kept his string alive in the final week to finish with

eleven-in-a-row. Andrew Blackmore (637) and Don Freeman (621) moved to eight-

in-a-row in the final week while Chris Price (626) ended with seven-in-a-row.

Don Nicholls Jr (732) and Dan Test (644) went out with strings of six-in-a-row.

Allen Walker (604) finished with five-in-a-row and Keith Sandoval (620) joined

the four-in-a-row club in week 36 for the fourth time this year. There were two

club dropouts in the final week – Glenn MacCullough after having 8-in-a-row and

Luis Pinto out after having 6-in-a-row.

For you high average bowlers, ever wonder how you have been averaging compared

to everyone else over the past 5,10,15,20,25 or even 30 years. The following

six tables list the 25 highest averaging bowlers for the past 30 years, 25

years, 20 years, 15 years, 10 years, and 5 years. I included bowlers who have

bowled at least 25% of the maximum number of games for the specified period

listed – even those who may not still be bowling in our league. Each list shows

the names of the top 25 bowlers from highest to lowest average for that time

period and displays each bowler’s composite Commercial League average. Two

bowlers who did not bowl this season still carry the leading averages based on

the criteria above. Chhoeun To carries the high composite average in five of

the six periods shown and Rich Lucey Jr leads the 5-Yr table.

RECORD SETTING NIGHTS FOR 2016-2017 The overall average for the season was 195.4, down a pin over last season’s

average. A brief summary of this season’s best nights follows.

High Avg. Night 204.3 (Week 20 – 11 Jan)

# 700 Series 9 (Week 23 – 1 Feb)

# 650-699 Series 16 (Week 26 – 22 Feb)

# 600-649 Series 27 (Week 20 – 11 Jan)

# 250 Games 19 (Week 23 – 1 Feb)

# 200-249 Games 99 (Week 20 - 11 Jan & Week 30 – 22 Mar)

HOW YOUR TEAM DID IN THE WON/LOST DEPARTMENT There were two clean sweep (32-0) matches on the season, a feat now

accomplished eight times in the fourteen seasons we’ve been using the 32-point

format. Team # 6 completed a clean sweep of team # 3, Gamecocks, in week 11.

Team # 3 then turned the trick against the blind team four weeks later in week

15. There were four other matches that came close to being clean sweeps but

ending in 31-1 outcomes. Those matches were: team # 2 versus the blind in

week 28; team # 3 versus the blind in week 36; and team # 6 defeating team

# 3 in week 22.

Winning 28 or more points in a match is also no easy task as it was done only

68 times in the 324 matches that took place. Three teams, all in ‘A’, did it

seven times each to lead the league in doing so - team # 3, Gamecocks; team

# 6 and team # 8, A/R Funding. One of those teams (team # 3) was also on the

opposite end of the won/lost spectrum, failing to win at least four points on

five different occasions, to lead the league in that category.

The ‘A’ division champs this year (team # 4, Making Turkeys Gr8 Again) won 20

or more points the most times in the league – 22 times. The ‘B’ division

champs (team #14, Bethesda Navy, lost fewer than 8 points only once all year –

the only team to do that.

The following table shows how each team finished in their division and the

number of times that each team won the number of points indicated in the last

eight columns.

SCRATCH AND HANDICAP TEAM GAME AVERAGES RANK ORDERED Listed below, for each division, are each team's averages for scratch game

(column 1) and handicap game (column 2) categories. Column three shows the rank

order of the opposing team's average handicap game.

To win the Commercial League, your team has to both bowl well during the year

and be fortunate enough to catch your opponents on other than their best nights.

At the conclusion of each season, one of the more telling stats is always how

well the opposition bowled against your team. This season was true to form in

that the two division winners (team # 4, Making Turkeys Gr8 Again, and team #14,

Bethesda Navy) had the next to lowest and lowest opponent’s average bowled

against them within their respective divisions. On the other hand, some of the

lower finishing teams were on the opposite end of the spectrum. Both last place

teams this season (team # 3, Gamecocks, and team #13) had the highest opponent’s

average bowled against them.

Of course other factors in addition to the scratch, handicap and opponents’

average per game come into play during the nine-month long season. Winning

streaks and avoiding big losing nights are important and both division winners

fit that profile during the year. Team # 4 went through a 12-week stretch

(weeks 16-27) where they won more points than they lost each week, compiling a

261.5-122.5 record over that span. In ‘B’, team #14 had a nice little winning

streak of 125-35 from weeks 3 through 7 and lost more than 24 points only once

all year.

Both division winners also had the best winning percentages in their regularly

scheduled division matches. And, digging a little deeper into the numbers, the

critical piece in winning the division title may well be how the first place

teams fared against the eventual runner up teams in their respective divisions.

In ‘A’, team # 4 bowled team # 1 three times during the year, winning 65 points

while losing only 31. Similarly, in ‘B’, team #14 bowled team #17 three times,

winning 61 points while losing only 35. Flip either one of those numbers around

and you might have had a different division winner in each case.

FALLS CHURCH COMMERCIAL LEAGUE BOWL AMERICA FALLS CHURCH

THE 2016-2017 SEASON IN REVIEW The 2016-2017 season featured our league’s traditional two-division format.

Both division races were decided rather early this season as the two eventual

division winners maintained substantial leads in their respective divisions for

the last third of the schedule. Following is a recap of how this season’s

divisional races unfolded.

DIVISION ‘A’ RACE The ‘A’ division only had four different teams in first place during the course

of the season, and two of those were for weeks 1 and 2. Team # 7, Bowling For

Soop, was in first after week 1, and team # 5, The Dudes Abide, spent its only

time in first place after week 2. Team # 2, Queen & 3 Jokers, took over first

place in week 3 and held it for the next thirteen weeks. Team # 2’s largest

division lead during that period was 48.5 points after week 10. But a really

bad 3-week stretch for team # 2 in weeks 16-18 (11-85 won/lost) provided team

# 4, Making Turkeys Gr8 Again, the opportunity to move into first place after

week 17 and the Turkeys never relinquished the lead after that. Team # 4’s

largest division lead was 51 points after week 26 and they officially locked up

the division title after week 34. Team # 1, 3NC, ended up as the runner-up in

‘A’ behind a strong finish in weeks 31-35 (126-34 won/lost). Team # 1 also

finished third overall as they won the week 36 match versus the ‘B’ runner-up.

DIVISION ‘B’ Five of the eight teams in ‘B’ held first place for at least one week during

the season. Teams #16, SW Contracting, and #18, Myer Connex, started the year

tied for the top spot after week 1. Team #16 then took sole possession of

first place in weeks 2 thru 5. Two new teams arrived on the scene in week 6

as teams #12, Over The Hill Gang, and # 14, Bethesda Navy, were deadlocked for

first with identical 120-72 records. Team #14 was alone in first after weeks

7, 8 and 9. Team #18 took over the ‘B’ lead for weeks 10, 11 and 12 before

relinquishing the lead to team #12 in week 13. After a 2-week stay in first,

team #12 surrendered the lead to team #14 in week 15 but week 16 found those 2

teams tied for first place once again. Team #12 held first place alone in

weeks 17 and 18, team #14 moved into first place in week 19, and then team #12

retook first place in week 20 for what proved to be the last time. In week

21, team #17, James Gang The, took the ‘B’ lead for the only time this season.

Bethesda Navy took over ‘B’ for good in week 22, opening up a lead as large as

40.5 points after week 31. Team #14 won its week 35 position round match

against team #18 by enough to allow team #17 to finish in the all-important

second place position. Team #14 went on to win the league championship match

in week 36 versus team # 4 while team #17 had to settle for a fourth place

overall finish after losing to team # 1 in their week 36 showdown.

SOME LAST MINUTE THOUGHTS Please help us recruit individual bowlers and/or teams for next year’s league.

We will keep our 7 p.m. starting time which should help us attract both some of

our old league members as well as some new bowlers. With all 17 teams signed up

to come back next season, we have a great opportunity to add several more teams

next season and hopefully eliminate the need for having a blind team or two.

Your league officers were reelected for the 2017-2018 season. Mike Clark was

elected league vice-president and Carl Armstrong will serve as Sergeant-At-Arms.

DATES TO REMEMBER: August 23rd – 2017-18 Commercial League organizational meeting, 7:00 p.m.

August 30th – 2017-18 Commercial League season starts at 7:00 p.m.

Have a nice summer!
