At the beginning of the school year, I meet with all the children who have moved to the Ranch during the summer months. After covering such topics as the history of the Ranch and what they can expect during their season here, I end by sharing an analogy that seems to resonate with most of them.

I point out that each child who comes to Eagle Ranch struggles to carry a backpack weighted down with the burdens they’re carrying—anger, bitterness, depression, loneliness, confusion. Their time at Eagle Ranch gives them the opportunity to take off their backpacks, remove those heavy weights, and sort through them in a safe and supportive environment.

During my talk, I noticed one young man who I had seen earlier in the summer when he moved to the Ranch. In the middle of my talk, in front of all the other children, I said, “You look different than you did two months ago.” He remarked, “You’re right about unpacking your backpack. I took out the weights of anger and bitterness and am beginning to deal with them for the first time in my life.”

In many ways, Eagle Ranch is not just about the boys and girls who live here. If the issues in our children’s backpacks are not addressed now, they also become burdens for their children and grandchildren.

Difficult Choices, Positive OutcomesSince 2001, more than 100 girls have developed confidence, learned to deal with anger and hurt, and gained a positive outlook on life through the Eagle Ranch program.

Often, it is a difficult decision when a family considers placing their child at Eagle Ranch. This can be particularly true for families of girls. Though they struggle at home, the family may hesitate to seek an out-of-home-placement.

When families discover that Eagle Ranch will keep them connected, and their child will come home every other weekend, the decision becomes easier.

Over the past 10 years, families have credited Eagle Ranch with helping them feel at ease while providing the help and hope their daughter, granddaughter or niece needed to return home.

For some children, school is hard in ways far beyond academics. Difficulty making friends and fitting in, struggles at home, anxiety, trouble controlling emotions—all carry into the school day.

Eagle Ranch School is committed to meeting each student at their point of need in order to assist their individual growth—spiritually, emotionally, socially, intellectually, and physically.

" Lil Bit is a very sweet horse and I love her. She follows me because I spend time with her and she trusts me. She also looks up to me because I treat her really good with respect and kindness and love. Lil Bit and I have a lot in common. We both are pretty shy when it comes to being around people."

A shy 14-year-old, Halli doesn’t talk much to others and is afraid to take leadership roles. “My problem is that I follow people. I’m the shy, quiet one. I get nervous really easily,” she said.

Working with horses provides a way for Halli to take the lead and establish trust in a way that feels safe to her.

“When I first got with the horses, I was scared because they’re bigger than me. But I learned that they are scared too. They need a leader so they won’t be scared,” Halli shared.

During her time with Lil Bit, Halli is tasked with leading the horse through obstacles and teaching her to follow commands.

“It gets a little more challenging every time. She can be a little bit stubborn, but I just need to have patience with her. I can’t be aggressive with her. I am very calm, give her a little nudge, and she listens to me,” said Halli.

“When she bends down to get grass when she’s not supposed to, I’ve learned techniques with the lead to get her to stop. It makes me feel good.”

RenewingTrust The Eagle Ranch equine therapy program

offers a way for children to build confidence and trust that has been broken in their lives.

Through her work with the horses, Halli is learning what it’s like to lead and to be appropriately assertive. She is also beginning to open up more in other settings.

“It’s hard for me to make friends. At my old school I would sit alone and not talk to anybody because I was so scared,” she said. “Things are getting a lot better here. I’ve been talking a lot more, and people seem to like me.”

Things are also looking up for Halli and her family. “My mom and I get along a lot better. If I am upset, I tell her. My attitude is better – I’m a lot more posi-tive,” she noted. Halli also continues to work to improve her relationship with her brother Shane, who also is living at the Ranch on the boys’ side. “We’re trying to find things that we like to do together – even if it’s just video games.”

And Halli’s thoughts about getting Lil Bit to overcome obstacles is a lot like how she faces her own struggles.

“When she’s stubborn, I think ‘Come on girl, you can do it. You just need a little encouragement.’”

The equine therapy program was

started in 2002.

Developing Young Leaders

Several members of the current Eagle Ranch staff served as assistant counselors. Matt Burch is one of the Ranch’s five counselors. Nicole Allen is the intake counselor, and John Cunnings is a housedad in the Love Home.

One of Eagle Ranch's best kept secrets is its assistant counselor program. Young adults considering a career in counsel-ing, youth ministry or a related field are recruited to serve at the Ranch to assist with the children and their families.

Assistant counselors – known at the Ranch as “ACs” – live on campus for 2-3 years. During that time they immerse them-selves in all aspects of the Ranch and play a vital role in the coun-seling, homelife and education of the boys and girls.

The HistoryIn the late 1980s, counselor Bruce Burch brought on young adults to help with recreational activities, organizing and leading sports such as flag football and basketball. The benefits were immedi-ate, as children had opportunities to bond with a younger role model, and houseparents had brief breaks from their duties.

Treatment Director Ronnie Weeks, who taught graduate courses at the University of Georgia School of Social Work, had experience with interns in treatment programs. He felt that the rec staff posi-tion could be elevated to an assistant counselor position and become a full-fledged part of a family’s treatment team.

“It would give a young person with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in counseling or social work an opportu-nity to try out the profession and prepare for graduate school,” Weeks said.

The idea worked, and the program evolved to what it is today. Currently, the Ranch has 10 full-time assistant counsel-ors – one assigned to each of the Ranch’s homes. All are in their 20s and have an undergraduate degree. Two of the current staff have advanced degrees and two are pursuing graduate degrees.

Part of the TeamToday, the assistant counselors run group meetings with the children, participate in family meetings, have one-on-one discussions and outings with the chil-dren, help with devotionals, home-work and assist houseparents with the children in a variety of ways. They also continue to oversee physical education and recreational activities. Upon gradu-ation, many children cite their AC as one of their biggest influences during their time at the Ranch.

“They are a key part of our program and contribute greatly in the healing process for the child and his or her family,” Weeks noted. “They challenge the children with the way they are think-ing, the decisions they are making.”

Continuing to Serve

Assistant counselors are also responsible for organizing the annual basketball league in the winter. Children always look forward to the games and benefit from being part of a team.

I was so im-pressed with how they conducted themselves before, during and after the game. I was also very impressed with the owner's philosophy on giving back to the community."

The Gwinnett Braves are among several area sports teams that have made a commitment to supporting the children of Eagle Ranch. Each summer, team members and staff visit to fish and spend time with the boys and girls.

“I enjoy coming out and meeting the kids,” said pitcher Todd Redmond, who has come to fish with the chil-dren for three years. “It’s a beautiful place and the program is phenom-enal. The progress the kids make here is unbelievable.”

Infielder Brandon Hicks agreed. “I didn’t know there was a place like this for children so nearby. It’s an awesome set up. I had a great time.”

This year, the children received an extra treat when they got to see the players they fished with in action on the field. Redmond and Hicks were among the starting line-up when the team faced the Pawtucket Red Sox.

From the opening pitch to between inning activities, the Eagle Ranch children got to be on the field and enjoy an evening in the spotlight. With 18 percent of Eagle Ranch children coming from Gwinnett County it was a special time to meet heroes in their hometown.

Just for GirlsThe girls of Eagle Ranch enjoyed an afternoon of fun this summer when they visited the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream. Before the game, the girls met and talked with Dream players.

“We’re honored the Atlanta Dream took the time to meet our girls and serve as positive role models for them,” said Executive Director Eddie Staub. “It was a unique opportunity to spend time with professional female athletes and see an exciting game.”

Founder Eddie Staub accompanied Hope, an Eagle Ranch resident, to throw the first pitch against the Red Sox.

The Eagle Ranch Honor and Memorial Gift Program helps sustain our daily operational funds and provides a way to recognize loved ones.
