    Atlantic Ocean, Berlin was recently namedthe coolest small town in America byBudget Travel Magazine. The publicationcites Berlins easy access to nature, itsspecial events, and its historic downtownas key selling points. As for those events,well, one of Berlins signature festivals

    takes place on October 18. Fittingly,its Octoberfest, a multi-block partyfeaturing a beer garden blooming withbrews, bratwurst, strudel, and live music.Elsewhere in Worcester County, FurnaceTown Living History Museum in SnowHill hosts the Chesapeake Celtic Festival

    on October 4 and 5. Expect bagpipes,kilts and Celtic grub and grog. Meanwhile,you can schedule a visit anytime to

    Finally, Worcester County is home to OceanCity, so heading to the beach in the off-season is yet another option.

    Marylands other noted coastline is the

    Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Kent,Queen Annes, and Talbot County all line the waterfront. In Talbot County , its allabout the water. Fall is the perfect time toset sail or kayak off the shores of Oxford

    or St. Michaels. TheChesapeake BayMaritime Museumin St. Michaels is thesite of several specialfall events. The Mid-

    Atlantic Small Craft Festival, taking placeOctober 3-5, is one of the countrys largestgatherings of boat enthusiasts and unique

    watercraft. On October 25, the museumhosts OysterFest. The homage to the

    Chesapeakes favorite shellsh features livemusic, boat rides, retriever demonstrations,oyster slurping contests, and cookingcompetitions. Elsewhere in Talbot County,Tilghman Day on October 18 explores thatislands heritage with oyster shucking andcrab picking contests, along with boat races.

    In Easton, the Academy Art Museum hostsa juried craft show from October 17 and19. Later in the fall, the Waterfowl Festival

    takes ight in Easton between November14 and 16. The time-honored EasternShore tradition pays homage to the annualmigration of geese through wildlife-themedart and decoy auctions. There are alsopainting and photography classes; childrensart activities; and the World Championshipsof duck and goose calling.

    to November 2, there will be concerts,

    lectures, reworks, and opportunities tosail on a eet of historic ships representing400 years of maritime history. Anotherpopular fall perennial is the RiverArtsAnnual Studio Tour. Running October 25-26 and November 1-2, the self-guided

    In Frederick County take in the Antietam

    National Battleeldand several other Civil

    War sites. The areaalso includes ve national parks, 10 stateparks, and more than 30 museums. Andnow, theres a wine trail there. A guided van

    tour of the trai l takes place every Saturdayin October. Participants can sample

    traditional wines, unique meads, and locally-produced cider. Those with a preferencefor beer should head to Hagerstown for

    the Quad State Beer Fest on October 4.Dozens of craft beers brewed in Maryland,Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania willbe showcased. Also in Hagerstown, theresan opportunity to listen to the MarylandSymphony Orchestra in October. TheMSO has dates at the Historic MarylandTheatre. Built in 1915, the theateranchors Hagerstowns downtown Arts& Entertainment District. Downtown is

    also where to catch the countrys longest-running night-time parade on October 25.

    The Alsatia Mummers Parade is a hugelocal tradition, as thousands of spectatorsenjoy the sounds of marching bands and

    the sights of colorful oats.Frederick County is all about pumpkinpatches, fall foliage, and life on the farmduring the autumn season. Through earlyNovember, farms around the countyhost festivals, corn mazes, pick-your-own-pumpkin patches and more. Lawyers Farm,Summers Farm, Crumland Farms and GaverFarm are just a few of the places hostingharvest celebrations. The wild and woollyside of farm life can be examined at theAlpaca Fiber and Artisan Fair in Adamstownduring the weekend of October 11-13. Chatwith alpacas and their owners, and shopfor Maryland-grown yarns, as well as craftsand fashions made from local Alpaca wool.Fall colors set the backdrop for the 51stAnnual Catoctin Colorfest in Thurmont. u
