Because the Huskieshave a plethora of talent,the team will run a 6-2 of-fense, which allows moreplayers to get onto thecourt.

Ive got hitters andblockers that need to be inthe game, VanEpps said.Its a must to run a 6-2.

The formation will help

JCCs front-row playersshine.

The 6-2 offense allowsyou to have three hittersup front all the time,VanEpps said.

Among those hitters isjunior Kaylee Burmeister,who led the team with 288kills last season. Burmeis-ter also had 32 ace serves,33 blocks and 257 digs lastseason.

Senior Kenna Bannisterand sophomore SydneyNyborg are also outsidehitters for the Huskies.

Middle blockers are ju-

niors Sydney Eddy, SarahBrandt and Alison Bensonand freshman Abby Ben-son.

Nyborg was second onthe team with 107 blockslast season and Brandthad 25.

Getting the ball to thosehitters is the key, VanEppssaid.

If we cant pass, itdoesnt matter how greatour hitters are, she said.Theyll never get to shine.The girls realize the ur-gency of passing; thats thebeginning of the game rightthere.

Junior Kathryn Nasbyreturns as the teams li-bero and the Huskies have

junior Megan Edlin andsophomore Abby Brink-man as defensive special-ists.

Their job is to get theball to the setters, whichare senior Shelby Benson,

junior Rachel Johnson andfreshman Lacey Wacker.

Weve got five girls whocan play middle blocker,weve got three settersthat are all good, weve gotthree defensive special-ists that are challengingeach other all the time,VanEpps said. Its a goodproblem to have. Its really

fun in the gym. Theyrereally stepping up theirgame.

VanEpps likes the ideaof the 6-2 offense utilizingmore of her players, butsaid shell make a switch ifthe offense sputters.

If you have two set-ters that are about thesame ability, you dont havemuch inconsistency, shesaid. But its very difficultto hit off two different set-ters if the setters styles aretoo different. If I feel theneed to go to a 5-1, well goto a 5-1.

But she wants to rewardthe hard work some of theplayers have put in during

the offseason.Weve got the hitters,

VanEpps said. Alison Ben-son, Abby Benson, Syd-ney Nyborg theyveall worked so hard and itshows. Youve got to havethem on the court.

The strong offense hashelped JCCs defense sofar, VanEpps said.

Our blocking: wow,she said. We get moretouches now than Ive everseen. When youre going upagainst Kaylee, Kenna andSydney Nyborg everydayand blocking them often,thats huge. Our defense isquick too.

VanEpps said Marshall is

not only the favorite to winthe Southwest Conference,but the section and statetitles as well.

But that doesnt meanthe Huskies arent gunningfor the Tigers.

Its always a goal to getto state, VanEpps said.But if you put too muchpressure on that state goal,you can have a 29-1 seasonand feel like youve failed.State is always a goal andwe always push for that,but I dont know how muchemphasis we want to put onthat. Its more important todo what we can to get bet-ter every day.

To do that, Schuller saidthe team needs to continueto improve all season andbe playing its best when itmatters most.

We want to hit our peakwhen we hit the playoffs,he said. We want to makea run again.

The Huskies will rely onan experienced left sideof the offensive line to putpoints on the board. SeniorMatt Schmit returns at lefttackle and senior NolanHohenstein is back at rightguard.

Thats our bread andbutter, the left side, Schul-ler said. Weve got two ex-perienced guys; both havestarted in some way sincetheir sophomore year. Butthose guys on the other sidecan play too.

The right side of the of-fensive line hadnt beensolidified as of Tuesdaybecause of injuries.

Senior Chris Baker willplay center as soon as hereturns from an injury,

which Schuller hopes is intime for tomorrow (Friday)nights opener at St. LouisPark. If Baker cant go,senior Zach Paulson willplay center.

The Jackson CountyCentral cheer team bringsback half its roster froma year ago and has sevencheerleaders who wereon the competition cheerteam that finished secondat state last season.

Cheer squad brings back six returnersThe Huskies were alsonamed a superior team.

At the camp, Cregeenand Schneekloth were bothnamed all-Americans, anhonor given to the top 10percent of the cheerleadersat camp.

The Jackson CountyCentral girls cross countryteam thought it would fielda complete team for thefirst time in two years to-ward the end of last season,but that plan fell through.

This year, the Huskieswill not only have a com-plete team all season, butfirst-year head coach RafeYork thinks the team cando quite well.

The same goes for theJCC boys team, which hasall but one runner backfrom a year ago.

All three are back thisfall and are joined by se-nior Samantha Swift, se-nior Oda Kristensen and

junior Jade Holthe to formwhat York thinks will be asolid group of six runners.

Bezdicek is the schoolsrecord holder, having post-ed a time of 15:06 in 2011.Last year, her best timewas 16:22.

Lilleberg was the fast-est JCC finisher in all fourvarsity meets in which sheran, with a personal best of16:38 in her varsity debut.Anderson ran 16:55 in theconference meet for herbest time.

Annika and Jayni had

great years last year, Yorksaid.Swift ran well in the

3,200-meter run duringtrack last spring and Hol-the pushed Bezdicek dur-ing the 2010 season beforegiving up cross country thelast two seasons.

Considering JCC has sixcapable runners and justfive runners count towardteam scoring, the Huskiesshould be in pretty goodshape.

Our top six looks pret-ty solid, York said. Weshould do OK with thegirls. Ill be happy withfinishing in the top half.

Also competing for theHuskies will be sopho-mores Elyse Johnson andKaylee Rosenkranz andfreshmen Karli Cavnessand Rhilynn Luhmann-Reyes.

Nasby leads JCC boysSenior Peter Nasby

emerged as the leader forthe JCC boys last seasonand has nearly his wholesupporting cast back. Theonly graduate is JordanSnyder, but the Huskieshave a good group of run-ners to try to fill that spot.

Nasby had a personalbest of 17:54 last seasonand was below 18:30 fourtimes.

Peter has been our lead-er so far, York said.

impressed so far, running

up front with Nasby duringpractice.Its a close-knit group,

York said. They feed offeach other and run in aclump.

York said his goal for theboys is similar to that of thegirls: finish in the middle ofthe pack as a team.

Realisitically, the mid-dle of the pack is a goodplace to start, he said.

season tomorrow (Friday)with a meet in Fairmont.JCC then runs at Mt. Lakenext Wednesday and hasits lone home meet of the

season Sept. 19 at the LoonLake Golf Course.

The Southwestern Unit-ed Wildcats were withinshouting distance of thestate tournament last sea-son and hope to do evenbetter this fall.

SWU won 24 matcheslast season and lost 3-2 toRussell-Tyler-Ruthton inthe sub-section finals.

Making it at least thatfar is one of the goals as

the Wildcats begin a newseason.

We want to build off lastyear, head coach Chris-tine Malm said. We havea team goal of making it to

the section finals and beingconference champions.

To do so, the Wildcatswill rely on an experiencedsquad that includes 10 re-turning letter winners.

As a whole, we have a lotof returners, so they knowwhat to expect, Malmsaid.

Thats because Malmenters her second seasonas head coach of the Wild-cats, which she said shouldhelp SWU get off to a betterstart than their 4-4 mark ayear ago.

The first week last yearwe had a lot of adjusting,she said. This year, we

both know where to setthe bar.Malm said her squad

should be successful offen-sively, led by junior middlehitter Courtney Place.

Offensively the peo-ple who swing at the ballswing hard, Malm said.Theyre not afraid to putthe ball away.

Place led the Wildcatswith 421 kills last year and

junior Rachel Mathias had157 kills. Junior AndreaHinkeldey hammered 99kills and junior KaileyWendland had 61.

Also playing in the frontrow will be junior SarahSchmid, senior Kristin

Liepold and junior KatyHenkels.

S o p h o m o r e H a i l e ySchumacher will play set-

ter for the Wildcats, withseniors Alisa Carlson, Au-tumn Hinkeldey, Sonja Pe-ters and Marque Loeschenin the back row.

Along with her team-high 421 kills last season,Place added 51 ace serves,89 blocks and 294 digs.

Andrea Hinkeldey had32 ace serves, 76 blocksand 137 digs last year andAutumn Hinkeldey had 20aces and 127 digs a yearago. Carlson had 91 digsand Liepold had 28 lastseason.

While Malm expects herteam to be strong offen-sively, she said it still needsto work on setting up the

offense.Serve receive, serve

receive, serve receive,she tabbed as the area thatneeds to improve the mostfor the Wildcats.

But Malm likes whatshes seen so far in thepractice room, where theWildcats have already im-proved in that department.

That will help as theWildcats face a tough non-conference schedule be-fore opening Red RockConference play.

SWU opens the season

Aug. 29 at Jackson CountyCentral and has its homeopener Sept. 3 againstWorthington. Both teams

are ranked in preseasonpolls, but Malm said thatshould help prepare theWildcats for a tough con-ference schedule.

The team to beat in theconference, Malm said, isagain Southwest Minne-sota Christian, which hasto come to Okabena thisfall. The Wildcats host theEagles Sept. 12 as part ofMeet the Wildcats night.

SWUs first conferencematch is Sept. 5 at Edg-erton.

The Wildcats will rely ona powerful running attackwith hopes of picking up afew yards at a time.

We have a lot of northand south runners, Drentsaid. Hopefully theyllget us 3 yards every time.On defense, the Wildcats

will have Durst, Mariscal,Milbrath, Hussong, Rad-ke, Schumacher, Altman,Poppe, Loeschen and Zinsall competing for time onthe line.

Linebackers are Taylor,

I went to a mentaltoughness seminar andone of the things talkedabout is What is your

orange? , VanEppssaid. Those threethings have to be doneby everybody on a dailybasis and are going tohelp you in the future.

VanEpps said theteam hadnt come upwith its list as of presstime, but examplesmight be as simple asgiving up pop during theseason to boost energy

throughout practice andmatches.

Whatever those threethings might be, VanEppsand the Huskies hope itcan help the team reachits goal of conference andsection titles.

The trek toward thosegoals starts next Thursday

when the Huskies open athome against Southwest-ern United. The big Mar-shall match is on tap forSept. 19 in Jackson.

VanEpps is assisted atthe varsity level by DeidreWierson, who is also theB-squad coach. MalloryRudolph is coaching the Csquad, with Mindy Roweand Nathan Boller at themiddle school level.

Numbers are up for theSouthwestern United crosscountry team and headcoach Les Knutson hopesthe trend continues.

SWU has 18 runners,with nearly all freshmenor younger. That gives

Knutson hope for a brightfuture, because the currentrunners have talent.

The girls return eighth-graders Rachel Salentinyand Makayla Edwards,who both finished well atthe section meet last fall.Eighth-grader BriannaPreston also ran well lastseason, as did eighth-grad-er Cheyenne Schaffer.

Joining those four areeighth-graders LynnetteCoronado and VanessaJuarez-Perez and seventh-grader Jaylyn Lubben.

Knutson hopes Salentinyand Edwards can lead theWildcats to some strongfinishes this fall.

With two good lead run-ners like that, that helps,he said. Our ultimate goalwould be to make the topsix in the section meet.

The SWU boys couldfield a full varsity and ju-nior varsity team this year.

Logan Knutson did wellin junior high races lastyear, finishing in the topfour seven times. His dadand coach said the toughpart will be making the

jump from one-mile racesto a 5K run.

Coach Knutson said withLogan Knutson and BrettMueller leading the way,the boys can have a decentvarsity team this year andgoing forward.

I hope we can keepthese kids interested, hesaid. In two years wecould be pretty good. Wellcontinue to take a stepin the right direction.The Wildcats will competein varsity and junior highraces throughout the year,starting with a meet tomor-row (Friday) in Fairmont.

Schuller said the Hus-kies will be a running team,with the option playing abig part of their offense.

It always starts with theveer, he said. But wellplay some power footballand weve got some stuffout of the shotgun youhavent seen.

On defense, the Huskieswill run their traditional4-3 formation and bringpressure when needed.

Matt Schmit and juniorNate Jones will play defen-sive end, with Bell-Pixleralso in the mix.

Hohenstein and Brightonwill start at defensive tack-le and Horn, senior WyattLivingston and junior Free-man Scott will also see timeat one of the tackle spots.

The Moore brothers willplay outside linebacker forthe Huskies, with Paden on

the right side and Keeganon the left. Junior KyleKapplinger and sophomoreCaleb Will are competingfor the middle linebackerspot and Schuller said bothwill see quite a bit of play-ing time.

Hesse, Christopher, Sal-zwedel and senior JordanBiehn are cornerbacks andTaylor-Breck and Macekwill play safety. Backingup the two seniors at safetyare senior Brady Place and

Opening against the big-school Orioles and then

playing a tough Foleyteam the next week willbe a challenge, Schul-ler said, but if his teamcomes out healthy, hellbe satisfied.

It helps if you can getthrough it physically,Schuller said of openingagainst two good teams.If you start losing play-ers to injury, its not sogreat. But were lookingat it as a positive.

Because the Huskiesopen a week earlier thannormal they play justone of 11 games in thestate during Zero Week they have a bye weeklate in the season.

That comes afterplaying at Marshall onSept. 27, giving the Hus-kies some time to restup and get healthy asthe playoffs near.
