Senior Chris Schmalz didn’t take last year’s 0-10 effort lightly, and will take a considerable amount of the snaps at quar-terback for GHS in 2009. Look for Schmalz to be a diverse threat on both sides of the ball.

Josh Roper will lead a healthy pack of Cowboys in the ground game, where he returns for his senior season. Roper also isn’t scared to make people’s pads pop on defense, where he will be located at linebacker.

B o b Howard and a v e t e r a n staff of past GHS coach-es will step back on the sidelines in 2009 to try to help the C o w b o y s rebound from their worst sea-son in the program’s history.

After having a share of three straight Western Slope League (WSL) titles, the Cowboys suf-fered through an 0-10 effort in 2008.

GHS will have nine seniors on the team to help guide the redemption campaign, while a lot will be expected from a class of 11 juniors.

On the downside, only seven sophomores returned to the team after 17 were on last year’s roster.

Defending 3A state champi-on Olathe will be the favorite in the WSL, but Grand Valley and Aspen both return with big things in mind for 2009.

With four of their top scorers from 2008 return-ing to anchor the team, the G u n n i s o n H i g h b o y s ’ cross country squad is eager t o s e e h o w much they can improve.

The Cowboys finished third at last year’s regional meet, before checking in with an 11th place finish at the 3A State Championships.

“We were very young last year and gained a ton of expe-rience at the regional and state levels,” said coach Gregg Smith. “The boys should be in a dog fight with Pagosa Springs and Bayfield for the regional title this year and look forward to improving their place as a team at the state meet in Fort Collins.”

Junior Bryce Johnston will be a front-runner in the effort, whi le sen ior Emmet Guy returns in hopes of cracking

into the top-10 in the region. A pair of sophomores, in Adrian Lovato and John Powell, will also toe the start line with a solid first year of experience under their belts.

Runners to watchSenior Emmet Guy was the third Cowboy to cross the line at last year’s State Championships, taking 84th overall. As one of two seniors on this year’s squad, Guy will be looked to for some fast times at the big meets.

Sophomore John Powell returns to the GHS roster after fi nishing 39th in the state as a freshman, in a time of 17-min-utes, 43-seconds. Powell also had a hand in nailing down the Cow-boys’ only points at the track and fi eld state meet in the spring.

Having only one return-i n g v a r s i t y starter isn ’t going to keep the Gunnison H i g h g i r l s ’ cross coun-try team from trying to take their second consecutive regional title.

Senior Meaghan Pike — who finished 107th at state in 2008 — will lead a mature core of Cowboys into battle. In total, six of the 10 runners on this year’s roster are seniors.

“Even with the turnover from last year’s team, the girls should be just as strong if not stronger than the 2008 team and back in the thick of things come the regional meet,” said coach Gregg Smith. “This is a team that should qualify for the State Meet and gain much needed experience we’ll need in years to come.”

Junior varsity standouts Lisa Lucas, Maggie Cress and Ashley Peterson will have to step into new roles on the varsity, but will receive help from return-

ing seniors Kate Gienapp, Jessica Martinez and Sam Shelafo.

The team finished 10th overall at last year’s State Meet, but lost their top five scorers from that team. Coach Smith views the loss as an opportunity.

“The girls have the opportuni-

ty to come together as a team and continue to build upon the foun-dation left by some distinguished alumni,” he said.

Junior Emera Danos will hold down the setter position for GHS in 2009, where she picked up All-WSL honors as a sophomore. Danos increased her vertical leap over the summer and will see every minute she can for Benson’s Cowboys.

Junior Kjirsten Nelson pulled double duties for the varsity and junior varsity in 2008, but will be a key element in the Cowboys’ attack from the middle blocker/hitter spot. Nel-son is versatile enough to play on both the back and front lines.

T h e r e ’ s been a sour taste left in the Cowboys’ mouths at the end of the past two sea-sons.

After tear-ing through their Western Slope League opponents in 2008, the Cowboys’ playoff party was spoiled by St. Mary’s in the regional tourna-ment.

Coach Shana Benson is hope-ful that this year’s team, which is driven by nine upper-classmen, will make the breakthrough they’ve been looking for.

“We want to have more than just a great regular season,” said Benson. “We’ve had two great regular seasons in a row and then failed to advance, so that’s our mission.”

The good thing about the make-up of the 2009 squad is that everyone on the varsity roster has the potential to impact each game.

A f t e r h a v i n g a s t r e t c h o f four straight league titles upended by Ba sa l t l a s t season, the C o w b o y s will be out for redemp-tion in 2009.

GHS wi l l have a l i t t l e momentum heading into the challenge, as they qualified for their first State Tournament in four years in 2008, where they advanced to the second round before bowing out.

“Our youth is the biggest thing we need to work on right now,” said eighth-year coach Leslie DiLorenzo. “We just need to get some game-time experi-ence in and then we’ll be ready to surprise some teams.”

DiLorenzo will look towards five seniors on this year’s ros-ter for experience, after hav-ing some big hitters move on after graduation. First baseman Sarah Brown and short-stop

Rachelle Cable will be central to that effort.

“As leaders they are going to be awesome,” said DiLorenzo. “They lead by example and they’re able to keep our spirits up when we make mistakes.”

The junior class on this year’s squad is small but will be heav-ily relied upon. At the center of that class is Lily Lambert, who will take over the main pitch-ing responsibilities.

Players to watchSenior Rachelle Cable returns to the GHS line-up after leading the Cowboys to their fi rst trip to the 3A State Tournament in four years in 2008. She will be looked to provide solid defense at the short-stop position and contribute big hits for the top half of the GHS batting order.

Sophomore Lily Lambert will be tested when she takes the mound for her junior season. As the lone ace on this year’s team, Lambert will be responsible for the brunt of pitching, but can also swing the stick when she’s at the plate. Coach DiLorenzo said Lambert has made signifi cant progress throughout sum-mer league play.

All-RMAC third team selection Shaun Suttorp, a junior, led the the conference and was fi fth in Div. II with 6.4 receptions per game. Suttorp averaged 74.9 yards per game in 2008 and recorded three 100-plus yard games.

Brendan Zink led Western State with 30 solo tackles last season and re-turned a fumble recovery for 53 yards that led to a score. The senior also registers ninth in school history with 337 total yards in punt returns.

I n h i s fourth year at the helm of the Mount-aineers, head c o a c h P a t Stewart has compiled his largest arse-nal yet to try and improve on his 6-21 career record.

Of the 120 players that suited out at the start of fall camp, 16 were starters on last year’s team that went 2-8 overall and 2-7 in conference. Twenty-seven lettermen return in total.

The Mountaineers had the fourth best passing and running offense in the RMAC in 2008, but will have new faces in the backfield after losing quarter-back Cameron Merrill and run-ning back Nathan Acrey.

WSC returns nine defensive starters, including five seniors. After giving up 30.6 points per game in 2009, the Mountaineers hope that another year of expe-rience, and successful recruit-ing, will help to limit the dam-ages.

Leading the pack is senior Iain Donnan, who is coming off a fifth place finish at the NCAA Div. II Championships. Donnan ran a time of 31-minutes, 14 seconds in the season finale.

Loren Ahonen and Tyler Pennel finished 12th and 14th at nationals, respectively. Sean Brown rounds out the list of returning All-Americans, after finishing 16th at the RMAC Championships just last year.

Among the contenders to make the squad’s top seven will be returning junior Tyler Rasmussen, red-shirt freshman Cordell Baker, transfer Glen Watts and freshman David Flynn.

Senior Iain Donnan fi nished fi fth in the nation in 2008 with a time of 31-min-utes, 14-seconds. He was also the top fi nisher for WSC at the North Central Regional Championships. After a produc-tive off-season, Donnan will return to the list of top contenders for an individual national title.

Junior Loren Ahonen fi nished 12th in the nation, third among sopho-mores, at last year’s NCAA Div. II championships. Preseason R M A C Runner of the Year Julianne P a y t o n , a j u n i o r , i s among a herd o f s t e l l a r returning run-ners to this year ’s WSC women’s cross country team.

Payton led the Mountaineers in the conference, regional and national meets in 2008, where she placed 11th at the NCAA Div. II Championships.

In 2009, she will be respon-sible for helping her team live up to second place preseason rank-ings in conference and sixth in the national polls.

“After having some health issues this spring, Julianne’s put in some good training and looks to lead the women’s team and be one of the top runners in Division II,” coach Jennifer Michel said.

Hillory Davis and Sarah Lyle also earned preseason All-RMAC

honors. Davis earned all-region and All-RMAC honors as a soph-omore last season while Lyle fin-ished seventh among freshmen at the National Championships in 2008.

F i r s t -y e a r h e a d coach Katie M o s k o w i t z will lead the Western State v o l l e y b a l l team into bat-tle when they hit the floor for the 2009 campaign.

After going 10-17 overall and 9-10 in the RMAC in 2008, mak-ing it back to the program’s first post-season tournament since 2003 will be the major objective.

“I’m excited for the returners,” Moskowitz said. “I think we have some real strength in leadership and the key positions like libero, outside and middle. We’re looking to have two freshmen be impact players, so I’m eager to get into season and see how the new ath-letes come together as a team as well as how they respond to a new coaching staff.”

In preseason pol ls , the Mountaineers were picked to fin-ish fifth in the seven-team RMAC West Division and 10th overall in the 14-team conference.

starters returning from last year’s team – which barely missed out on a trip to the playoffs — plus the libero.

With the departure of All-RMAC performers Amy Thompson and Erin Osleson, WSC will look to a healthy slate of new faces to fill in at key positions.

Junior Lindsay Huson will be the team’s vocal leader at the middle-blocker position. Last season, she recorded a team-high 78 blocks for the Mountaineers and was third on the team in points scored.

Junior Lindsay Huson returns to the line-up after recording a team-high 78 blocks in 2008. On top of her 19 aces and 197 kills, she was third on the team with 259.5 points. Huson will also act as one of the vocal leaders of the team in 2009.

Junior Jamie Hamsa played in all 103 sets for the Mountaineers last season and was second on the team with 280 digs. Hamsa was third on the team in service aces, with 12. As a sophomore, she had a season-best 20 digs against rival Adams State in the second to last game of the season.

CBCS cross country runner Erin Kelly, a junior, will be at the front of the pack for the Titans in their quest to bring home regional and state titles. Just last year, as a sophomore, Kelly claimed a state title in the 3,200-meter

run at the track and fi eld State Championships and set a school record with a time of 11:30.

Kelly took second place at the 2008 Class 2A cross country State Championships, helping her team to a second place overall fi nish.
