The BHA is thrilled to have Jim Carson as this year’s featured artist! Jim is a member of the American Impressionist Society and is an associate member of Oil Painters of America. He has had paintings accepted in shows in both. Most recently, one of his paintings was accepted to the 2014 Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition in Bennington, Vermont, and the 2014 American Impressionist Society National Exhibition in Denver, Colorado.

Although always interested in drawing, even at an early age, Jim’s

interest in art was dormant while law school, marriage, raising a family, and building a law practice took precedent. He became the managing partner in the law firm of Chambless, Higdon and Carson, in Macon, Georgia, where he practiced law for 31 years.

About 25 years ago, Jim’s wife gave him a painting course for Christmas, and Jim has never looked back. This journey culminated in July 2003, when Jim retired from law practice, moved to Saluda, North Carolina, and now paints full time. Jim also gives workshops throughout the US, and is known for his harmonious color balance and bold brushwork.

From the homes, gardens, music, and antique dealers to the docents, volunteers, and visitors, the Beaufort Historical Association extends our sincerest thank you to all those who helped make this year’s Tour and Show come together.

The 54th Annual Old Homes & Gardens Tour and Antique Show & Sale were a huge success!

were filled with fun for all ages! Gigi Koehler, Nancy Vaughan, and Joann Maher led the Depression Bead, Weaving, and Corn Husk Doll workshops, respectively. Sandi Malone led two Pine Needle Basket workshops and Joan Lilley led the Beginner’s Tatting workshop.

The BHA thanks all the summer workshop volunteers for their hard work in helping the BHA’s Living History Series come alive once again!

THANK YOU!

This year’s Summer Party was a terrific event! Guests enjoyed food catered by Beaufort Grocery and a signature cocktail, Blue Beaufort Breeze, courtesy of Doug Brady, all while dancing the night away to the musical stylings of The Boomers. With the help of auctioneer Ray Harris, the live and silent auctions were a huge success.

A special thanks to the Summer Party Committee, chair Katherine Team, our generous sponsors, and all the volunteers whose dedication and efforts helped the BHA host such a wonderful evening!

To everyone who helped the BHA this summer, especially for the...

The 1st Summer History Day Camp gave local children another opportunity to learn about the area’s heritage, awakening their awareness of the difficulties facing our ancestors, making them more appreciative of present day life, and encouraging them to work harder towards a more productive future.

Throughout the 3-day camp, children engaged in hands-on activities including open-hearth cooking, rope making, knot tying, butter churning, and gardening. On the final day, campers used coins they had earned to barter with each other for their handmade crafts. The camp was a huge success with over 15 children each day. Please contact the BHA if you have any comments, ideas, or would like to volunteer next year!

Volunteers are always needed to help with these fun & educational programs. No experience in any of the activities is necessary as scripts & materials are provided. For more details, please call the BHA at

252.728.5225.

Preparations for this year’s Harvest Time are well underway! This fall, Harvest Time programs will take place October 13th - 17th and 20th - 24th from 9 am to noon each day.

Each year, the BHA, Education Committee, and volunteers create a lasting educational experience for local 4th grade students based on the NC Social Studies curriculum standards.

Through collaborative activities students experience life as it was in late 18th and early 19th century Beaufort. Informative hands-on stations, led by volunteers and docents in period dress, demonstrate open hearth preparation and cooking, candle dipping, colonial gardening, and woodworking. For more information, please stop by the BHA or call 252.728.5225.

A special thanks to the dedication of our Education Committee and Coordinator Cheryl Munyan who, in collaboration with the 4-H and the Carteret Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, made

the 1st Annual Summer History Day Camp a big success!

The retrospective show for Dee Knott opened August 2nd and will continue through the end of September. It was wonderful to see the response at the opening with friends and neighbors from Beaufort as well as her former residence of Michigan coming by and calling to make sure they could purchase a piece of artwork from this nationally acclaimed watercolorist.

Throughout her 35-year professional career, Dee devoted her energy and passion to painting exclusively with watercolors. Her paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the country. Along with numerous awards, Dee was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the American Society of Maritime Artists.

We are grateful to Dee’s husband, Ray, and her whole family for choosing the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery to sell her remaining works. Be sure to stop by the gallery before the show ends in September.

From the DirectorIt’s been a great summer at the Beaufort

Historic Site. We have welcomed visitors from all over the world, while enjoying new events and activities as well as our traditional events that have been put on for many years. We had the first ever “Men Who Cook” event to showcase the recipes in our latest cookbook. It was a huge success, and a great way to kick off our Old Homes Tour and Antiques Show, which followed a couple of weeks later.

Next we dealt with Hurricane Arthur. It wasn’t the way we wanted to start 4th of July weekend, but we bounced back quickly. The Summer Party got us back in a festive spirit, and it was one of the most fun parties we have ever had.

Another “first” was our Summer Day Camp for Children. Our staff and volunteers welcomed children for two 3-day sessions where the children learned about chores, making handmade items, and how to earn money and then to barter or pay for the things they needed. This is what our fundraisers are all about: providing educational opportunities (in addition to keeping our 11 buildings maintained). The Summer Camp was a fun experience for all of us! We hope we also gained new young volunteers for the future.

Before summer ends, I hope you’ll stop by the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery to see Dee Knott’s artwork. It is an amazing show, and we are so grateful to her family for choosing the BHA to sell her remaining paintings.

With fall on the way, we’ll be having our volunteer picnic to thank you for a great summer and let you know what’s in store for the rest of the year. We hope to see you on September 23rd and, as always, thank you for your help with all our many programs.
