Some of us stay a little longer to finish up the visiting andcleaning up. We have a lot of fun getting to re-know each otherand find out what they have been up. There is a lot ofreminiscing about the "Old Frontier Days." The weather isalways good for us. I get a lot of hugs to store up until ourChristmas party and then I get re-hugged until our next function.

Our Christmas party is scheduled for November 17th. We arehaving it again at The Country Buffet located just south of 88thAvenue on Sheridan Blvd. Will set you a flier when Juanitasends them out some time in October.-Shirley Drnovsek

attendee was Marge Hushka, at 90 years young. Marge was thePBX operator in Denver. Our longest term employee was LeoSchuster and our person who came the longest distance was fromFlorida - Bob Imhoff.

It was great to see so many people - and to share the memories. We are working on the 2016 event which will be the 30th

anniversary of the closure of the 1st Frontier Airlines. We areworking to have our picnic on Saturday the 20th of August atWings Over the Rockies.

I am working with the company who has purchased the FAAtower at Stapleton. It is anticipated they will remodel 3 floorsfor a restaurant and will be done by June 2016. We are hopingwe will be able to go into the tower, but that is to yet be decided.

IF we can work it out we would love very much to have aFriday night event at the old tower which has been kept as ahistorical building on Stapleton Airport. But it is yet to beconfirmed and it will depend on what arrangements we can makefor availability and cost as well. If the "tower" facility is notavailable, the old Stanley Aviation building is being convertedand it may be an option.

Lots of plans but yet to get them all confirmed. Hope to seelots of FAL people at the next reunion.-Carolyn Boller

FYV-FSM MEMORIAL PIGNIC: We had BBQ, beans, bev-

erages, salads and desserts along with a very mild, sunny andbeautiful day. Employees attending were, Phil Green, RustyLambert, Robert Walker, Ray Duckett, Larry Roller, JackChambers, Paul Farris, Jerry Gill, Joe Keys and Jake Lamkins.Family and friends brought the total to almost 20. It was ourlowest turnout that I can recall.

Our group had three fly west this past year - Don Enos, BlaiseEngelking and Ed Jones. Sadly, that trend will continue as itwill for the entire FLamily

It was decided to have next year’s reunion on Saturday, August27th - same place and times.-Jake Lamkins

Another great PIGnic with old friends & fellow employees!Good to have some old timers from CN there too - not many ofus left that go back that far. The food was great - gets betterevery year. Pig always comes thru on th BBQ!

We enjoyed the fellowship with everyone - some missing sincelast year & I missed them.

We got some good pictures this year. Hope I didn't missanyone.

Til next time keep your face toward the sun and the shadowswill fall behind you.-Jack Chambers(Jack and wife Shirley took the photos posted at FLacebook.)

GONE WESTWe salute these FLriends on their final voyage.

They are not dead until we forget them.More information at http://OldFrontierAirlines.com Some years back I was doing some research in the archivebook section of Brigham Young University. In reading aboutthe old airmail pilots who flew the transcontinental mailbetween the years of 1918 and 1927, I came across an articleexplaining the term “Gone West.”

As the old airmail route continued its expansion from theeast coast to the west, thirty-two pilots and nine mechanics losttheir lives in the line of duty. Three hundred wrecked aircraftwere strewn from the Allegheny Mountains known as “TheHell Stretch,” across the open plains to the Rockies, theWasatch, the Sierras into the west coast. When a pilot was overdue, the term “Gone West” came into being.-Tex Searle, FL pilot

THE CENTRAL SIXErnest Fuqua was one of the "Central 6" which established a

historic precedence in airline labor relations and interpretationof the Railway Labor Act. He is the last to fly west.

The six Central Airlines aircraft mechanics refused to attenddisciplinary hearings without a union rep and were fired byCentral. The System Board of Adjustment gave them their jobsback with back pay.

Central refused to abide by the System Board decision and thesubsequent lawsuit went to the Supreme Court which ruled in themechanics' favor.

IAM had called a strike over the mess and Central fired dozensmore mechanics. It would be six years before they all got backtheir jobs.

The case has been often cited in subsequent labor disputes inwhich airlines are required to abide by System Board decisions.

Following are some emails with aircraft mechanic Bill Guthriewho was part of the larger group involved.-Jake Lamkins

Bill, I was looking at websiteshttp://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/372/682 andh t t p : / / w w w . l e a g l e . c o m / d e c i s i o n /1961504295F2d209_1440/INTERNATIONAL%20ASS'N%20OF%20MACHINISTS%20v.%20CENTRAL%20AIRLINES,%20INC. trying to see if this was when the Pratt brothers were offwork. Seems like you told me you were one of them too.

Is this the lockout you mentioned about them? Do you recallthe names of the six that were fired?-Jake Lamkins

As I remember the strike only lasted about 8 days. When theIAM called an end, we were all called in for interviews. Mostpeople that previously held lower classifications (cleaner, stockclerk, etc.) were offered an opportunity to return to those posi-tions. About half of us were terminated and reinstated after thecourt ruling. That took six and a half years-Bill Guthrie

I found a court decision that named Robert K. Doud, ShermanV. Cornstubble, Otha L. Broom, Clinton R. Casey, Parker R.Davis and Ernest E. Fuqua, Appellants. Are these the sixmechanics that were out for six years? How long were thePratts, you and others out?-Jake Lamkins

That's the six Jake. We were all out six years. These 6 menworked in the sheet metal shop. We were in a contract disputeand things were tense. We had a DC-3 with wing damage onFriday afternoon. They asked for a couple of people from theSM shop to work O/T on the week end to repair it. Not anxiousto help the Co., they all refused. Since the A/C was scheduled fora charter flight On Monday, Dave Vaughan declared an emer-gency and sent notice in writing that anyone who went homeinstead of working O/T would be fired. Needless to say thestrike occurred because they refused to reinstate those 6 people.-Bill Guthrie

I'm still trying to get it straight. Besides the six named in thelawsuit, how many others were out six years such as you and thePratt brothers? Did you all get back pay and seniority?-Jake Lamkins

I think there was about 80 or more. We all got our seniority

back to hire in date. I think the 6 got a monetary settlement. Notsure how much.-Bill Guthrie

This is a 2007 email from Bill about what it was like duringthat six year layoff.-Jake Lamkins

Just over 50 years ago, (Feb 04,1957) I worked my first dayfor Central Airlines. I started as a stock clerk in the maintenancedept. at Meacham Field in Ft.Worth. I was soon very astute atknowing most all of the parts necessary to maintain a fleet of 9Douglas D.C.3s.

Many new words were added to my vocabulary, along withmany airline codes, to which I was a total stranger, i.e. WDG(Enid, Ok), BVO (Bartlesville, Ok) and the ever popular SWIand SWO (Sherman, Tx and Stillwater, Ok). I had lots of helpfrom people like Bob Donley, Jack Curtis, Charlie Florin, and alead mechanic named Alden (Stormy) Sellers.

I was probably the happiest guy on the planet. Making $1.24per hour - great! My wife and I soon bought a home, a new 1958Chevrolet , and for Valentines Day, 1958, a brand new baby girl.

All this joy was short lived, in April, 58, the airline was in alabor dispute with the I.A.M., of which I was a member, and it

Many thanks to Bill Guthrie for his help for this article andmany other things over the years. He is a true FLriend.

Bill worked in aircraft overhaul and line maintenance at FTW,GSW, DEN, OMA, FSM (twice), MKC, MCI, MEM and SLC.He was in SLC at FL’s shutdown. Bill then went to work forWestern Airlines in 1986 shortly before the Delta Airlinesmerger. He spent the last 12 years of his airline career as a leadaircraft mechanic in Delta’s SLC hub. Bill retired in Dec 1998and returned to Texas.-Jake Lamkins

ended in a strike. Now bear in mind , the strike lasted only 8days. but after that there were interviews to determine if thecompany would allow us to come back to work. About 80% ofus were fired, during what was a small depression in Ft.Worth.

It just happened to coincide with General Dynamics laying offapproximately 5,000 people. Needless to say , jobs of any kindwere scarce, and I went back to Abilene, Tx, where I worked at

many jobs - oil field roughneck - painter - carpenter - truckdriver, just to mention a few.

But after 6 1/2 years of the I.A.M. fighting all the way to theU.S. Supreme Court, wisdom finally won out and we werere-called to our former positions, with full seniority. This was inthe fall of 1964, and life went back to almost normal.-Bill Guthrie

This 1964 article shows four of the Central Six aircraft mechanics getting their ten years pins shortly after coming back to work af-ter being fired for six years! Note that Dave Vaughan, the man who fired them, is present for the awards.

CONVAIR NOTESWilliam Landrum - Did all of the Frontier 580s have the galley and lavs up front? Seems like one trip I flew they were in the rear.Vicky Veldboon - All the FAL 580's I worked had galley, lav and net-covered cargo in front; cargo access, FA jumpseat and emergency exit door aft.David Ruddell - AL and NC had them aft, not sure about PI. Not even sure PI had 580'sJake Lamkins - PI didn't have CV580s - rather they flew the M404, YS11 and FH227.Melodye McKamey Wangler - I loved flying the 580's. I don't remember the lavs and galleys any place except up front. I do however remembertypewriters in the bottom of garmet bags that hit me in the shins when I took the garmet bag from passengers. Another good memory was that the guysgot a GOOD lunch when we had turn arounds at airports with no restaurant and the flight attendant got peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. My howthings have changed!!!!Jim Mustain - You mentioned earlier u rode CV -600, had galley, lav IN REAR.William Landrum - Now that I think of it it was a CV 600! Back in September of 1973 I flew from MEM-JBR on a TI CV600 N94230. On 9/27/73 thatsame aircraft, operating as Flight 655 crashed into Black Fork mountain near Mena killing all 11 onboard!Jim Mustain - Remember the TI accident. I was Mgr. in MEM W/FL @ that time. TI mgr was good friend & he & I had watched that flight leave.William Landrum - A good friend of mine in Oklahoma has been to the site of that crash near Mena, Arkansas and most of the wreckage is still up onthat mountain! MY CAREER IN AVIATIONby Mel Maynard

(Excerpted and edited from Mel’s emails.)I have often been asked how I was able to attain a flying career

with the airlines when I didn't have any experience, to speak of,and was beyond the age limit that the airlines would evenconsider. So I decided it was time to share this with everyone.

This is my story about a career that I had only dreamed of, andfelt could never be possible. I made the licenses and ratings thatwere necessary for my future in aviation.

Following my discharge from the Air Force in 1953, I tookflying lessons in Sioux City, IA, and earned my CommercialPilots License by Christmas of 1955.

I worked for Graham Flying Service in N. Sioux City, S.D.,overhauling aircraft engines in the late 1950s. It was there that Iearned my Powerplant Mechanics License.

In 1962, I, along with my wife Charlotte and our 3 daughtersMelody, Marilyn, and Lori, moved to Broomfield, Colorado, where I worked for six months overhauling aircraft engines for acompany called Kensair. Then after a two and a half year stint asa filling station owner, I once again went to work as an aircraftmechanic, for Combs Aircraft at Stapleton Int’l Airport.

While working for Combs Aircraft I heard a small still voice inthe back of my head, that told me to get my Airframe MechanicsLicense. So, I attended the Emily Griffith School of Opportunityin the evenings to earn that license, not having a clue as to wherethat might lead, or what good it would do me.

Then, after getting that license, I discovered that a flight schoolhad a link trainer in a back room that they leased from Combs, and for $50 I could get 10 hours of instrument training, which Idid. I had no clue as to why I was doing this.

This made me still 20 hours short of being qualified for myInstrument Rating. Then I found that I could get a discountedprice (since I worked for Combs) to rent an airplane, and a flightinstructor, to get the remaining 20 hours that I needed, to earnthat rating.

Charlotte and I discussed whether or not to spend more moneyon my pursuit of a career in flying, and both of us agreed thateven though I was already 35 years old, which is 5 years over theage limit to be considered by any airline, that it was time to gofor broke and get the rating so I would be qualified, in case acorporate flying job would become available. So Charlotteborrowed the money from the Credit Union where she wasemployed, and I "went for it ".

While I was in the process of getting the remaining 20 flighthours necessary for my instrument rating, I discovered thatFrontier Airlines was looking for Career Flight Engineers, andflight time (I only had 250 hours total in J3 cub type A/C) andage, didn’t matter, as long as you had the following ratings:Commercial Pilots License, Powerplant Mechanics License,Airframe Mechanics License, Instrument Rating, and had theBasic Flight Engineers written test passed.

Wow! It now looked as though a miracle had happened andmaybe I was going to be qualified for the airlines after all.

So after getting my instrument rating, I settled in, and studiedhard, to pass the written for the Basic Flight Engineers rating. Then I was qualified for employment with Frontier Airlines. Iwas hired by Frontier in June of 1967.

About two years after I was hired, there was a new union

contract agreement signed and flight engineers were now al-lowed to bid into the pilot's seats. So, thereafter, I was privi-leged to go through training for, and was awarded, a co-pilot'sposition on the Convair 580 turbo-prop, later on the Boeing 737and eventually as Captain on the 737.

While at Frontier Airlines I accumulated my Flight EngineersLicense, Multi Engine rating, Airline Transport Rating and aType Rating in the Boeing 737.

Due to a slight medical problem I was forced to take a medicalretirement from Frontier in 1985, at the age of 55.

After about four years of retirement I had a desire to onceagain return to the work force (preferably in aviation).

I studied for, and passed, the written exam for an instructor'srating, Then after some flight instruction, and a check ride, Iearned my Single Engine Flight Instructors Rating in 1989.

In 1990 I was hired by America West Airlines, in Phoenix Az,to become a 747 flight engineer instructor, then shortly after Ihad become qualified for that position, I was informed that therewas an opening for an instructor in the 737 simulator program, which I immediately jumped at, as that was my favorite aircraftand one with which I was the most familiar.

I got caught up in the big 3,000 employee lay-off in 1995, so Iwas once again retired.

While working at America West Airlines in Arizona, as a 737Simulator Instructor, I was able to aquire my Multi EngineInstructors Rating, which came in handy in the late 1990s, whenI once again become a 737 Simulator Instructor for Jet TechInt’l, and Pan Am Flight Academy, in Phoenix. The MultiEngine Instructors Rating allowed me to make extra money byparticipating in aircraft check rides with students who weregoing for the 737 type rating.

I retired one more time, in 2001. That’s my story in a nutshell.

U.S. COURT AFFIRMS $7.9 MILLIONJUDGMENT IN FAVOR OF FRONTIER

The recent decision of the Second Circuit Court of Appealsaffirming a $7.9 million judgment against RKO General, Inc., infavor of Frontier is still subject to further court review if RKOGeneral, Inc., elects to appeal the decision to the U.S. SupremeCourt. E. Paul Burke, President, states in the company’s quar-terly report to stockholders that he does not know if RKOGeneral, Inc., would seek further court action. RKO General is amajority stockholder in Frontier.

Mr. Burke did point out, however, that if and when thejudgment is paid, the money will go to Frontier Airlines. As aresult, shareholders in the company will benefit by a pro-rataincrease in the value of their interest in the airline. The moneywill not be distributed among Frontier shareholders as previ-ously reported in news stories.

The suit was originally filed on behalf of Frontier by one of thecompany’s minority stockholders. It was alleged that RKOGeneral, Inc., realized benefits from the Central Airlines-Frontier Airlines merger by reason of its purchase of CentralAirlines’ securities and the subsequent exchange of those securi-ties for securities in Frontier within a six-month period.(FL was paid $8,474,044 on Dec 1, 1970 by RKO Generalwhich included $553,363 in interest to settle the stock manupu-lation lawsuit as ordered by the court.)

I was hired in 1966 (3/28/66) in reservations until bankruptcy.Started in the old hangar on cement floors. Then in our newbuilding. A lot of memories.

After Frontier went down in 1986 I was hired in reservationswith UAL & after 5 years decided that was enough. My husbandand I both retired in 1991. I will be 88 years old in Septemberand I am doing good health wise.-Betty Rotenbery

I started work at Frontier Airlines on April 15th 1968. I was inDenver, Co for 4 years. I then went to St. Louis, MO. I did getlaid off and went to Chadron, NE for 1 month and then back toSt. Louis, MO. I was there for 2 years. I then went to Denver,CO for 6 months on the DART program. I then went to KanasCity, MO for 1 month then went back to St. Louis, MO for 10years. I then went to Lexington, KY for 2 years then I went toKansas City, MO for about 2 years until Frontier closed.

On August 24, 1986 I got a call a 4 am to kick the airplane outat 7 am and then it was done. After that I moved my family toKentucky. I bought my family farm. I went to work for acompany that worked on UPS airplanes for 2 years. UPS tookover their own maintenance. I went work for UPS in Novemberof 1988. I retired from UPS in 2013. Now I work on my farm. Iraise corn and soybeans and a little hell when things don’t goright.

I am going to go till I can’t go and then I’m gonna go. I neverworked for any company that I didn’t try to save them money. Ireally loved working for Frontier Airlines.-Curtis Perkins

Thanks for including my note in George Terryberry’s obit. Atour MCI FL get-together in May I took a list of those who had“gone west” that I had worked with in MCI, FOE and TUS. It isreally sad to think of all those friends. Thanks for your work.-Glenn Hastert

My my my!!! Looking at, no printing out thelist of the dearly Departed was unnerving. I hadto Stop several times as I recognized this nameand that one.

When my time comes, Remember I workedin MKC, LAS, DEN, and JAC. My careerreally took Off (no pun intended) after Frontierwas done with me. I sure did love that littleairline and took a lot of my knowledge with meworking for other carriers over the world.

You’d be surprised how little some of thefolks out there know about the FAR 121 rules. As an agent, I was very familiar with goingover the Rockies and the term for the weightrestrictions with the engine out en route, etc. You’d be surprised on some of the thoughtssome instructors had figuring the take-off gross

weight and what it was all about. I’d pull out my old manualsand high light a paragraph or two... “Here read this,” I’d say.

It was tough going from a ramper to being a FAR 121 pilot andeventually becoming a captain. There was a lot of resistance insome cases. My three sons became airline mechanics and so bythe time I did become a captain, there wasn’t much I didn’t knowabout Boeing systems...LOL! I could hold an intelligent conver-sation with them.-John Skibinski

It's been 10 years, but I'd like to thank you again for thewonderful obituary webpage you did for Rich Owens (STLstation agent), my late husband. Thank you so much. Rich waswell loved, and always always will be.-Sue Owens Evans

I flew a Frontier 737 out of Sacramento back in the 70s. We hittwo ducks on takeoff. One hit the post between the two frontwindscreens. The other went thru the right engine. STINK!Pewter! The duck mess on the front windows made seeing out achallenge and it cooked on the heated windows! Landing was achallenge! ...it took over an hour to clean those windows!-Billy Walker

Enclosed is a check for a 2 year subscription. My last checkup was favorable and the doctor opined that I should last foreight issues. On the other hand, what does she know? Betweenher, the accountant and the lawyer I hire to watch both of them, none was born when Frontier closed the doors.

Good grief. Where did the time go? When did I change from ayoung whipper- snapper to an old geezer? I don’t rememberlosing my edge. I still have it.

A couple of weeks ago I spent over two hours in the back yardplaying with the grandkids. Not an easy thing to do at my age. Then my dear wife came outside and reminded me that we haveno grandkids. Good grief. How could I dis-remember that?

I found this eatery (photo below) on the out skirts of town lastweek. I wonder if this is where we get our last crew meal.-Jack Martin, ex-FAL DenDZ

FRONTIER'S DEATH 29 YEARS AGOAUGUST 24, 2015

Steven Ensrud - So sad and so uncalled for, Its seems like onlyyesterday,,I was in OAK and got a call I didn't need to come intowork. they say we should forget the past,,,no way!,, FL was veryspecial

Bill Guthrie - One of the bad days in my life.Marcia Glasrud Crump - This was a very bad day for we FL

employees! It was supposedly the richest bankruptcy in CO everfiled! FL had many assests that CAL acquired i.e. airplanes andairplane parts.

Kim McCaleb Austin - I was I STL when we got thecall....sad!

David Rice - I was on my way back to BFF when they shutdown 1 week before my 50 th Birthday 29 years ago. Heard it onthe radio so called in and was told to come pick up my stuff onMonday as we were done! Just like that!

Jan Modisette Brictson - I was on a layover in New York. Mysupervisor called me to tell me that our FAL planes weregrounded and I had to find my own way back to Denver. I put onmy uniform, got a ride to the airport and spent 3 hours going todifferent airlines, asking to go stand by to Denver. Continentalfinally let me take the last seat and flew me home. I arrived toFAL's concourse and it was like a ghost town. Planes parked atthe gates with caps on the engines and all the window shadesdown. No one around. I walked up to the second floor to myoffice and a sheriff's deputy escorted me to my office and said Ihad 10 minutes to clear out my desk while he watched. Saddestday of my life.

THE LIFE OF FL 727 SN 7273FSent by station agent Ken Edmondson

who worked for both BN and FL.Braniff International Boeing 727-191 registered as N300BN

was purchased previously owned from Frontier Airlines of Den-ver, Colorado.

Ship N300BN was purchased new by Frontier Airlines andfirst flew at Boeing's Renton, Washington Plant on May 26,1967 and was delivered to the carrier'sDenver Stapleton Field Base on June 2,1967. The aircraft was painted in theclassic crescent moon and arrow colorscheme and was registered as N7273F.

Frontier ordered a total of five Series-100 Trijets that included N7270Fthrough N7274F and later purchasedfive 727-291 Stretch Jets with registra-tion numbers N7275F throughN7278F. Besides the new aircraft, twoused Series -23 aircraft were alsoleased briefly from American Airlines.

However, Frontier also flew Boeing737 Twinjets and Jet Powered Convair580 Mountain Masters and ultimatelydecided that these two workhorse air-craft would best serve the company'sRocky Mountain West route system. Therefore, all of the Boeing 727 Series191 aircraft were sold to Braniff Air-

ways and later three of the Series 291s were also sold to theDallas based carrier. Braniff took delivery of Ship N7270Fwhich was registered as N297BN in December 1969, precededby N298BN in the same month. Ship N299BN was deliveredearlier in April 1969, and N301BN in November 1969.

Ship N300BN was delivered to Braniff Airways on November5, 1969. The aircraft was painted in the 1967 Light Lime GreenSolid Color Scheme and remained in that color until after 1972when it was painted in the 1971 727 Braniff Place Red. Theaircraft flew for Braniff for the next thirteen years and was soldin late 1981.

In 1971, Braniff had implemented a Fleet Utilization Plan thatcalled for Boeing 727 aircraft operating over its domestic andMexico route systems. A short time later, the plan was updatedto call for the gradual retirement of Series -100 Trijets in favorof the longer and more efficient Series -200 aircraft. At the timethat Ship N300BN was sold Braniff had less than six 727-100Trijets in its fleet.

On December 29, 1981, Ship N300BN was sold to BurlingtonNorthern Railroad Corporation and was reregistered as N3496Ain April 1982. Burlington repainted the aircraft and outfitted itas an executive transport. In March 1989, the Boeing Trijet wastransferred to Burlington Resources, a BNRR subsidiary basedat Seattle, Washington.

The aircraft operated here for the next three years and was thenreregistered to Burlington Resources on February 24, 1992. Theaircraft then continued to operate for Resources until January 23,1995, when it was transferred to another BNRR subsidiary,Meridian Oil.

Meridian flew the Boeing jet for only two months until it wassold to Dart Container of Waxahachie, Texas, on March 21,1995. Dart reregistered the aircraft as N727X in August 1995and flew for twelve months before selling it to DSTS, Inc., inAugust 1996. DSTS operated the aircraft until March 2001when it was sold to the Republic of Djibouti in Africa. TheRepublic bought the aircraft for use a government VIP Transportand subsequently reregistered it as J2-KBA. The aircraft is stillin service with government of Djibouti.

DE-REGULATIONIS NOT THE ANSWER

Editorial in ALEA’s The Air Line Employee, April, 1977On December 22, 1976, a month before he took office,

President-elect Jimmy Carter asked his aides to summarizeCongress’ current position on de-regulation of the air line indus-try—the 11 trunk carriers, nine local service companies, andthree all-cargo lines certificated by the Civil Aeronautics Board, and which provide scheduled service to 58,000 pairs of cities.

The idea of reducing federal control of this industry is not new;as a matter of fact, it has probably been floating around eversince 1938 when the Civil Aeronautics Act was passed for thespecific purpose of bringing stability and orderly development toair transportation. And the Act has done exactly that, producingthe world’s finest system, so that no sweeping changes were everproposed . . . until the Ford administration, 1975.

It was this legislation, coupled with a number of other fuzzysuggestions by various senators and representatives and theCAB, itself, that Carter asked to be briefed on. In their summary, his researchers said Congress sought to provide better service atlower fares and lower freight charges, and that it hoped toaccomplish this without harming existing carriers, labor, in-vestors, airport development, or service to small towns. A nicetrick if they can do it!

And just how did Congress expect to achieve this happy stateof affairs? First (said Carter’s aides) they would make it easierfor new companies to enter the industry. Second, routes wouldbe opened up to allow more competition. Third, air lines wouldbe permitted to drop (or raise) ticket prices within a wide rangeand with much less approval from the CAB. And fourth, thecarriers would be released to a great extent from anti-trustcharges in cases of mergers and other cozy arrangements that aresure to be made.

Well, Jimmy Carter is now in the White House, and the 95thCongress is now debating this very subject . . . to the very deepconsternation of every scheduled air line and every labor unionin the industry. But if the goals are so laudable, why all theuproar? Simply because there is no real assurance the desiredend product will ever be reached, and there is a very real chancethe entire industry may be wrecked in the attempt.

It is feared, for example, that putting more companies withmore aircraft and more flights into the system will mean moreempty seats, even if fares are lower. And when fares and freightcharges drop below cost, or even approach it—as would surelyoccur with cut-throat competition—look out! That’s when smalland financially weak companies cannot survive and are swal-lowed up by the few remaining giants. That’s when investors, seeing once valuable routes cheapened by being thrown open toall comers, pull in their horns and make it impossible for an airline even to order new equipment, much less pay for it.

The experience of Southwest Airways (Texas), and PacificSouthwest (California), has been held up to Congress as a primeexample of what can be done under “free enterprise,” but it isextremely doubtful their success could be duplicated nationwide. The truth is that SW enjoys a monopoly between close-inairports, that it operates under the protection of the state, andthat its labor costs are low because most of its employees arenon-union. As for Pacific Southwest, it is the sole survivoramong 15 carriers which for years competed under chaotic

conditions—a clear warning as to what could happen on a grandscale!

Now what about service to small towns? Despite promises tothe contrary, it is almost certain they will suffer, along withmedium size cities which today may be served by two trunks, orone trunk and one local service carrier. And with fewer flights, what need is there for improved airports or more modern termi-nals?

Safety, too, is an extremely important factor that has beenalmost entirely overlooked in the rush to de-regulate. The AirLine Pilots Association stresses that safety must never lose itsNo. 1 position in priority, and ALPA reminds us that safeprocedures don’t come cheap. The pilots also point out thatsafety precautions on certificated air lines are much more strin-gent than the standards set for commuters.

But among the risks asociated with de-regulation, none isfeared more than the spectre of widespread unemployment, notby the hundreds, but by the thousands. It is this grim outlook thathas labor unions—backed by the AFL-CIO—standing side byside with management. As explained so well in the Februaryissue of National Airlines’ employee magazine NOW, deregula-tion coupled with expansion of charters and the prospect ofmergers, would be a three-headed monster. It would causewholesale cutbacks in the work force, and endless bumping ofemployees from one station to another.

So it all boils down to something ALEA President Victor J.Herbert said in this space last summer and has elaborated onseveral times since in his President’s Newsletter: “Any attemptat radical de-regulation amounts to a Congressional overkill. Weagree reform is needed to speed up route awards and to updatecertain other procedures, but we cannot stand by and do nothingwhen the entire system is threatened with collapse.”

The least we can do, certainly, is to contact our Senators whoeven now may be trying to decide how to vote on this vital issue. The legislation is entitled Senate Bill S689, and it’s sponsoredby Howard Cannon of Nevada and Edward Kennedy of Mas-sachusetts. Their address is Senate Office Building, Washington,D.C. 20510. A similar “companion bill” has been proposed inthe House of Representatives. Their ZIP is 20515 (same city!).(And we all know what happened after that was written.)

HOW MANY FLOLKS?Awhile back someone asked how many people worked for FL

over the years. I realized recently we should be able to tell fromthe employee numbers. I think they were first assigned shortlyafter the CN/FL merger in 1967. Thus I ended up with number5124 and others accordingly with lowest in the AAs and thehighest in the ZZs. After that initial changeover the numberswere assigned numerically as FLolks were hired. Thus I find inmy FLile a C F Rutherford hired in HOU as a part-time stationagent who started on Aug 11, 1986. Rutherford with an em-ployee number is 20329 is probably the last person hired by FL.

If my reasoning is correct, that is about how many peopleworked for FL during it's 1967 - 1986 years, However, thatwould not count the people who hired on and then left 1946 -1967 before the new numbering system went into effect. I havethe last FL roster which was issued in Aug 1990 and it has 7200names. It does not reflect how many were working on Aug 24,1986. So I would estimate 25,000 FLolks have been on thepayroll from the start to finish.-Jake Lamkins
