For Pete’s Sake –

Oct. 11 - 10 a.m., free seminar: Choosing investments wiselyfor your 401(k), presented by Morgan Stanley FinancialAdvisor Gabriel Lynn, Chamber Boardroom, 9050 LasTunas Drive, Temple City

Oct. 13 - 7 p.m., Board of Directors meeting, ChamberBoardroom

After the recent heat wave, the Fall seasonbrings a welcome change of weather marked by arefreshing drop in temperature and a burst ofautumn colors in foliage.

It is not so much a change as it is a transitionwhich is an appropriate metaphor for Temple Citythese days. Like the City itself, the Chamber trea-sures our past while looking forward to the fu-ture.

Having just celebrated our 90th anniversary, Iam excited about our new Board of Directors ledby Jane Chavez of the Pregnancy Help Center SGVand epitomized by our newest Board memberSean Yee of MedTor, Inc. If you would like to bringyour voice and ideas to the Chamber by joiningour Board of Directors, please contact me at theChamber office.

Even in our busy office we recently bid aurevoir to the much liked Stefanie Stowers who ispursuing graduate studies in San Francisco andwelcome the bright, articulate efficiency of ournew Executive Assistant Kristie Bueno who hasalready made incredible strides in re-organizingour office while filling it with her own positiveenergy.

Speaking of new energy in our Chamber uni-verse, I would like to welcome our newest mem-ber Nestle Waters who now also supplies ourdrinking water and beverages. As best we can, weutilize our own members for our many office and

business needs and so we have transitioned fromour former water supplier to Nestle Waters’ Ar-rowhead line.

The fact that their rates were competitive andtheir product spring fresh made this change goodfor our refreshment as well as our pocketbook. And as their water comes in 100% BPA (BisphenolA) free bottles makes it good for health as well.

The Nestle-Arrowhead family also includes thepopular San Pellegrino and Perrier brands so weare feeling refreshed and ready to face new chal-lenges. For more information on our newestmember’s services, contact Area Sales Represen-tative Waymond Johnson at 818-402-2314 or e-mail [email protected]. Tell himyou’re a Chamber member or that you heardabout it here and he will take good care of you.

Finally, following the success of our 90th An-niversary Annual Awards Gala (A Night at theGatsby), many of you have asked about our nextevent.

Board member Judy Huie Mena who did sucha bang-up awesome job chairing the Gatsby eventhas once again taken the reins on producing ourFall/Winter mixer which will take place in Decem-ber. Stay tuned for more details, but it is nevertoo early to reserve one of our limited sponsor-ship opportunities. As 2014 transitions to 2015,our goal is to have an event that rocks becausethat is how we roll.

So here’s the thing: there aresome obvious hygiene ap-proaches that even most guysunderstand and, on a good day,can even carry out if the bardoesn’t get set too high.

But then again, there areother more subtle measures thatyou might already know ifyou’re a woman and that’s whyI’m calling them “almost secret.”If you’re a guy, you might eventhink I’m making this stuff up... but I’m not.

So here are six fairly secretdental hygiene insights, believeit or not:

6. Floss first (please): It’sgreat eating protein with veg-etables but remember to flossout spinach between yourteeth; then brush it all awaywith your tooth brush.

5. Brush your tongue: So it

doesn’t sound sexy but bacte-ria accumulate like crazy on thetop of your tongue, which upclose and personal, looks sortof like a shag carpet.

4. Chew sugarless gum: Butnot all day long. Chewing for

20 minutes can help stimulatethe flow of saliva and help de-rail the tooth decay process.Careful if you have any TMJconcerns.

3. Brush to a song: Turn onyour I-pod and bust somemoves while you brush to thelength of a song (unless it’sBolton).

2. Please take vitamin C:Another believe it or not - 1,000mg of vitamin C per day helpsmanage bacterial bad guys in-volved in periodontal disease.Plus, who wants scurvy?

1. And finally ... please take

Six fairly secret ways to keep your mouth healthyand your smile drop-dead gorgeous — really

a thirty minute break: Waitthirty minutes after eating ordrinking citrus fruits beforebrushing. Brushing too soon inan acidic environment cancause tooth erosion. Try todrink water right after eating ordrinking citrus.

That’s it for this month. Fighton.

Whether a business is a start-up business, a struggling business or even a well-established business, the Southeast Area Social Ser-vices Funding Authority (SASS-FA) WorkSource Center has programs that can save time and money. SASSFA off ers paid work expe-rience programs for adults and youth by working with business-es to fi nd pre-screened, qualifi ed candidates. An on-the-job training program reimburses businesses up to half the salary of a new employee during the time needed to train that new employee. For more in-formation, phone Arthur Monre-al at 562-633-9511, x239.

Businesses often face unique challenges that two tandem pro-grams can meet. SASSFA’s layoff aversion pro-gram can provide people, re-sources, and institutions to empower businesses to thrive. Phone Martha Acosta at 562-946-2237, x263. Businesses in the position of needing to lay off some of its workforce can benefi t from rapid response. SASSFA works closely with busi-nesses to set up orientations for employees to make the transition easier to their next job. For more information, phone Lindsay Frank at 562-633-9511, x228.

Legal ReportBy Tony J. Tyre, Attorney at Law

The Tyre Agency5703 Temple City Blvd., Temple City.

For more information, phone 626-285-7033or email [email protected].

Living trust more aff ordable and less time-consuming than probate I always like to ensure that my clients understand the following benefi ts of having a trust verses going through probate court to transfer a deceased person’s as-sets. In my opinion, there are three main benefi ts: Cost Trust: A typical trust package drafted by an attorney costs somewhere around $2,000. Although this is not a small amount of money, $2,000 is a lot less than probate fees. Probate: Attorneys’ fees in probate court are set by statute, which simply means that the fees are set by the California leg-islature and are not as negotiable as ordinary attorneys’ fees. For example, as we know in the San Gabriel Valley, property values have risen signifi cantly in the past few years. As a result, if a person in Tem-ple City passes away without a living trust and has one asset, a house worth $750,000, the attorneys’ fees by law would be $18,000. Choice Trust: With a living trust, an individual can choose who get which assets and when. For ex-ample, if you don’t want to give your estate to an irresponsible

son, you can choose to leave your entire estate to your 16-year-old granddaughter when she turns 30 years old. You can specify that the trustee can use the trust money for your granddaughter’s health, support, maintenance, and education prior to reaching age 30. Probate: Without a trust, if your son is your heir at law, he would receive your entire estate outright.TimeTrust: I have met with a client, drafted, and fi nalized a trust in less than a week. Once a person with a trust passes away, that person’s trust assets transfer to the benefi ciaries (almost) imme-diately.Probate: My average pro-bate case has been taking 9-12 months to complete before as-sets are transferred. Th is long time period obviously makes the grieving process even more diffi cult for the surviving loved ones.Tony does not charge for ini-tial consultations. For more information, please make an appointment with Tony at 5703 Temple City Boulevard, phone 626-285-7033 or email [email protected].

Fake communications from fi -nancial predators claiming to represent the IRS have ramped up. Both friends and clients have brought several recent oc-currences to my attention. Th is is deeply concerning. IRS impostors are calling peo-ple claiming that back taxes are owed and demanding payment. Th e elderly and recent immi-grants are particularly vulnera-ble to these manipulations. Please know that the IRS will not:• call you about taxes owed without fi rst mailing you an of-fi cial notice.• demand payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount due.• require you to use a prepaid debit card.• ask for your personal informa-tion over the phone.• threaten to arrest you for not paying taxes. Th ese predators may know the last four digits of your Social Security number. Th is doesn’t prove the caller is legitimate.

Some caller ID machines may display ‘IRS’ or note that the call is originating from the 202 area code in Washington DC. Likewise, this proves nothing. If a message is left on your answering machine, don’t call back. Th at only allows these fraudsters a chance to hook you. Instead, write down the callback number and contact the Trea-sury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484. Th ese are the folks tasked with rooting out such tax scams. If you owe taxes, the IRS will contact you by U.S. mail – nev-er, ever, through email. If you do receive a supposed email from the IRS, don’t open any at-tachments or click on any links in the email. Instead, forward it to [email protected]. It’s import-ant to remain skeptical and be cautious. Securities and advisory services off ered through NATIONAL PLANNING CORP (NPC) member FINRA, SIPC, a Reg-istered Investment Adviser. Band holds waterless car for Rose Parade questThe Temple City High School POTC

(Pride of Temple City) band and auxil-iaries offered a “waterless” car wash, Sept.20, at the TCHS Teachers’ Parking Lot,9501 Lemon Ave., Temple City.

Because of the severe drought, TCHSperformed a waterless car wash by clean-ing windows and vacuuming cars. Thecar wash was free, but students took

pledges based on the number of carswashed.

This was the POTC’s largestfundraiser and was especially needed thisyear with the band and auxiliariesmarching in the 2015 Pasadena Tourna-ment of Roses Parade.
