FALL IS A GREAT TIMETO SEED A LAWN

Most grasses prefer a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. In this area, calcium is required and can be obtained from oyster shell lime and/or dolo mite (if the pH is below 7.0) or gypsum (if the pH is above 7.0). Don’t use dolomite if you have a heavy clay soil as it contains magne sium which is already at high levels in these types of soils here in the North Coast. Add-ing cal cium is important for good plant growth, better water penetration through improved soil tilth, and disease resistance, and is espec ially important where chem ical fertilizers have been used as they tend to make the soil more acidic. We recommend fertilizing lawns with California Organic Fertilizer 7-5-7, at the rate of 3 to 5 pounds per 100 sq. ft. Two applications per year, spring and fall, are good with this slow-release fertilizer. See page 13 for complete pricing information on this fertilizer.

PLANTING A COVER CROP Why plant a cover crop? To put it simply, to help heal the earth and make it a better place for crop plants to grow. Cover crops can be the only practical method of supplying organic matter at high enough levels to main tain a high state of produc tivity. Organic matter itself is good for im proving soil friability, tilth, and water pene tration. Save time, fuel and labor by mowing instead of discing and reduce soil compaction by fewer trips through the field. As organic matter decays and forms humus, it can provide nitrogen and other soil nutrients for succeeding crops. The soil microorganisms that feed on covercrop resi due contribute to a healthier soil ecosystem and help prevent plant diseases and nema tode outbreaks. Erosion takes away val u able top soil containing important nu trients needed for plant grow th. Even though you may not see any gullies or other visible forms of erosion, most bare land will erode with almost any amount of rainfall. For severely eroded locations, Blan do brome and Zorro fescue are prob ably the best as they both do well in poor fertility situa tions. As preven tative measures, annual and perennial rye grass are much less expensive to seed but will grow quite a bit taller than Blando or Zorro. Grasses do a better job of holding soil than clovers due to having a dense root system but they are not deeply rooted and will not aid in the break up of hardpan or allow much infiltra tion. There are many hillside vineyards who have planted a mix of annual grasses and annual clovers for erosion control with good success. Vigor and moisture management can also be controlled by the cover crop chosen. Use low-water requirement covers such as Zorro or Moke lumne fescue when water needs to be conserved. When areas are too wet or competition with the crop is desired, use high water users such as perennial ryegrass or Calif. brome. Competition can shorten canopy growth, reduce leaf to fruit ratio to improve earlier sugar development and color. Cover crops also have benefit as insectary plants for attracting and feeding beneficial insects. Cover crops have been found to drastically reduce spider mites.

“GREEN MANURE” In agriculture, a green manure is a type of cover crop grown primarily to add nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Typically, a green manure crop is grown for a specific period, and then plowed under and incorporated into the soil. Green manures usually perform multiple functions, that include soil improvement and soil protection: * Leguminous green manures such as clover and vetch contain nitrogen-fixing symbiotic bacteria in root nodules that fix atmospheric nitrogen in a form that plants can use. * Green manures increase the percentage of organic matter (biomass) in the soil, thereby improving water retention, aeration, and other soil characteristics. * The root systems of some varieties of green manure grow deep in the soil and bring up nutrient resources un-available to shallower-rooted crops. * Common cover crop functions of weed suppression and prevention of soil erosion and compaction are often also taken into account when selecting and using green manures. * Some green manure crops, when allowed to flower, provide forage for pollinating insects.

Historically, the practice of green manuring can be traced back to the fallow cycle of crop rotation, which was used to allow soils to recover.

ANNUAL RESEEDINGCOVER CROP SEEDS

Annual cover crops are recommended where organic matter is needed to in crease humus levels and fertilizer availability, by providing homes for beneficial soil micro-organ isms who disappear when soil organic matter falls below 1.5%. Winter growing annuals are the best for dry farmed perennial crops and gardens as they are sown in the fall and turned in the following spring. Legumes are the preferred cover crop for green ma-nure due to their ability to “fix” nitrogen from the air into a form readily available by plants. They are easily rototilled or disced into the ground next spring and decay rapidly.

COVER CROP SEEDSPermanent cover crops are recom mended where erosion control is needed or a perman ent plant cover is desired to provide habitat for beneficial insects, better water infiltra-tion and ability to move vehicles on the ground during the rainy season. Most perman ent cover crops require at least some supplemental irrigation during the summer except for the annual clovers and summer dormant grasses. Also, they all require some mowing, espec ially in the first few years to help esta blish the cover crop.

Rhizo-Kote seed is inoculated with the appro priate

Rhizobium bacteria and a coating of lime for improved germina tion, seedling survival and optimum nitrogen fixation.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS WITH CLOVERS Make sure soil calcium and phosphorus levels are close to being ade quate. Soil pH should be close to 6.0 or higher. Nitrogen levels are not critical. In fact, it is not recommended to give extra nitrogen to clovers or they will not work as hard to fix nitrogen. The most critical step with clovers is to TAMP THE SEED INTO THE SOIL ONCE BROADCAST. If you drill the seed in with a Brillion seeder it will do the tamping for you. On a small scale, a lawn roller or jump ing up and down on a sheet of plywood will work.

Annuals for Permanent Cover

Most of the annual clovers are typically planted in the fall so they can take advantage of the winter rains. Most will not do well if planted at other times.

ANNUAL SUBTERRANEAN CLOVER MIX, Tri folium subterraneum. (25% Dalkieth, 25% Denmark, 25% Trikkala, and 25% Mt. Barker). Recom mend ed for dryland or drip irrigated orchard and vineyard rows. Winter growing annual clovers reseed them selves and with mow ing become the domin ant cover. They go to seed by end of May, leaving a dead mulch on top of the ground until fall when seeds germinate. Rhizo-Kote seed.Use 1 lb/1000 sq ft, 25-30 lb./acre (drilled). ACM $3.32/lb. $2.755/lb. 50 lbs.

GROWING GARLIC Use 1000 lb./acre garlic bulbs, 1800-2400 lb./acre elephant garlic. Plant softneck garlic 2” apart, 2” deep, in rows 26” apart; plant hardneck garlic 4” apart, 2” deep, rows up to 36” apart. Elephant garlic, plant 6-8” apart, 3-4” deep, in rows 26” apart. Rows can be closer or fur-ther apart, depending on equipment needs. Plant from late September to Novem ber. Garlic planted later does not store as long. Plant in well-drained soil with good organic matter content as garlic is a heavy feeder. If your soil is too wet in the winter, plant in raised beds. Rotate plant ings each year to a new area.

Low fertility areas should have manure tilled in before planting. Other wise, begin sidedressing with composted ma-nure, kelp, and/or green sand, from the middle of March to the middle of May, every 2-3 weeks. Along with clean culti-vation, these fertilizer applications are the key to large garlic. If you have irrigation- use it, as soon as the soil begins to dry out, normally in

April. Keep even moisture until the middle of June, then stop. A week or two later, dig up the garlic. Be sure to cure garlic by hanging in bunches or pile up with all the bulbs exposed to the air, in the shade! Leave roots and stems on while curing. After 2-3 weeks of drying, start to clean by clipping roots and stems off, and removing loose skin and dirt from bulbs. Store in open weave sacks in a dry place above freezing temp. If using old onion sacks, be sure to wash first with mild bleach and water solution.

Softneck garlic is the most commonly found and its botanical name is simply allium sativum var. sati-vum. Almost all supermarket garlic is a softneck va-riety. This is because softneck garlic is easier to grow and plant mechanically and also keeps for longer than hardneck garlic. Softnecks are recognized by the white papery skin and an abundance of cloves, often forming several layers around the central core. The flexible stalk also allows softneck garlic to be formed into garlic braids (plaits).

There are two main types of softneck garlic: silverskin and artichoke. Silverskin garlic is most common sim-ply because it’s easier to grow and keeps longer. Arti-choke garlic tends to have fewer but larger cloves and a milder flavor. The artichoke garlic bulb wrappers are coarser than those of silverskins and sometimes have purple blotches.

Technically known as the ophioscorodon variety of allium sativum. The name possibly originates from the Greek “ophis” meaning “snake”. Hardneck garlics have a “scape” - stalk - which coils from the top. On the top of this scape grow a number of bulbils which are often mistakenly referred to as garlic flowers.

Hardneck garlics have fewer, larger cloves than the softnecks. They also have less of an outer bulb wrap-per, sometimes none at all, making them more sen-sitive and thus reduces their shelf life. Their skins are easy to peel. They have a moder ate storage period ( 3-4 months after harvest).

There are FOUR main types of hardneck garlic: Rocambole, Porcelain, Purple Stripe, and Asiatic/Turban. Rocambole garlic usually has up to a dozen cloves of a tan or browny colour. Porcelain garlic has a satiny white wrapper and the fewest cloves in a bulb, perhaps as few as four very large cloves. Por-celain garlic is often mistaken for elephant garlic. Purple stripe garlic is highly distinctive because of its colouring, with bright purple markings. Asiatics and Turbans are the very earliest harvesting of all garlics. If you can grow them, you will have garlic before any-one else is anywhere near ready to harvest. They are short storing garlics as most don’t last more than 5 months at room temperature before sprouting. They are always the first garlics to sprout in the fall. When they are ready, their tops start to fall over, like on-ions and that’s the time to check their bulb size and

get ready to start harvesting them before they lose all their bulb wrappers, which they will do

if they stay in the ground for very long after they are ready to be harvested.

SHALLOTSA member of the onion family, but formed more like garlic than onions. Shallots are favored for their mild onion flavor, and can be used in the same manner as onions. A shallot looks like a small, elongated onion with a copper, reddish, or gray skin. When peeled, shallots separate into cloves like garlic. There are two main types of shallots: Jersey or “false” shal-lots (larger) and “true” shallots (more subtle flavor). Fresh green shallots are available in the spring and dry shallots (dry skin/moist flesh) are available year-round. Shallots come in three sizes – small, medium and jumbo (the least tasty). The younger (smaller) the shallot, the milder the taste. Do not confuse shallots with green onions or scallions.

SOLAR ELECTRIC POWER

Let PG&E be your 100% efficient photovoltaic battery system with a grid-tied solar

electric system from Harmony Farm Supply!

• Net-zero annual PG&E bill• California Solar Initiative rebates (residential cur-

rently at $1.10 per watt!)• Commercial and residential federal tax credit for

30% of system cost• 5 year accelerated depreciation for businesses• Modules guaranteed for 25 years• All inclusive 10 year warranty on entire system• Zero maintenance required• SAVE MONEY AND THE PLANET!

California is leading the nation in promoting a renewable energy future by providing net-me-tering and up front financial incentives (rebates). Net-metering allows you to get credit with PG&E for the power you produce. The power you use at night or during cloudy days is then free (PG&E becomes your 100% efficient battery system!).

The California Solar Initiative (CSI) is a 10 year, 3 billion dollar state program to provide financial in-centives for solar energy. Currently the CSI is pay-ing $1.10 per watt toward residential system costs (this amount steps down over time). In addition to the California programs, there is a 30% Federal tax credit for businesses and homeowners. Businesses can also use a 5 year accelerated depreciation schedule (making commercial solar applications very financially attractive).

Beyond the grid-tied system option, battery back-up systems provide power when there is no grid. This can be desirable for remote, off-grid homes or as part of a grid-tied system to provide coverage for power outages.

If you are considering a photovoltaic system for your home or business call us and we’ll explain all the options and the whole process.

If you would like to get a head start on your own, here are the basic steps in siting and sizing a photovoltaic system:

1. Site Review: Do you have an open southeast to southwest fac-ing location with little or no shading? Roof tops are ideal locations, but ground mounting is also popular with those who have the space. Space re-quirements are in the range of 100 square feet per kilowatt (1000 watts) of modules installed.

2. Average Energy Usage:Your PG&E bill provides you with your average kilowatt hours per day (kWhr/day) for each month. Usually it is best to look at a years worth of bills, from which you can get 2 years worth of kWhr/day averages. Add them all up and divide by 24 to get your overall average kWhr/day. Note: if you’re off-grid it’s a bit more complicated so call us or email us ([email protected]) for a load calculation sheet.

3. Peak Sun Hours:“Peak sun hours”, in this case, is the average an-nual sun hours per day with a de-rating factor for some real world system/module rating characteristics. For Sebastopol, we use 4.5 hours (call us to confirm the right number for your locale and specifics). Dividing your average daily en-ergy usage (kWhr/day) by the appropriate peak sun hours gives you your approximate system size in kilowatts. Multiply this by 1000 to convert to watts.

Example: 15 kWhr/day ÷ 4.5 sun hrs/day= 3.33 kW

kW x 1000 W/kW = 3330 watt photovoltaic system

(System size is in industry standard STC watts. Ask us for our “Photovoltaic System Sizing Background Information” sheet for more information.)

4. System Cost:Total installed system cost for typical residential systems runs around $8.00/watt. This includes parts, installation, permits, etc. If you live in Cali-fornia and are hooked into PG&E, the CSI rebate reduces this to around $6.00/watt. Another ap-proach to sizing is to look at how much you want to spent, divide it by $6.00 and that is the approxi-mate size in watts of your system. Such reduced sized systems can still get you out of the higher cost electricity tiers and allow you to pay the lowest rate possible every time you turn on a light! (Just remember that the CSI rebate requires a 1000 watt minimum.)

5. Next Steps:Come in, call, or email us to discuss your system specifics. We will provide you an estimate based on your electrical usage. If you are then ready to move forward, we will come out and do a full site evalu-ation at your location and discuss all the module, inverter, and mounting options. From there, we generate a CAD layout and a formal equipment and installation quotation and you are ready for solar power!

PV System Installation Process:Energy usage evaluation => System Cost Estimate => Site Evaluation => Final System Layout/Quote => Purchase Agreement / Contract => CSI Rebate & Net-Metering Application => Rebate Confirmation => County/City Permit Pack => Equipment Acquisi-tion => Installation => Final Walk-Thru & Confir-mation => Energy Production!

DETERMINING SHIPPING & HANDLING CHARGES

1) DETERMINE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR ORDER.

Every item in the catalog has a shipping weight in pa-

rentheses behind the price. Use the shipping weights

given in paren theses with the # symbol, for example

(SW 3#) means 3 lb. freight. Where there are no # sym-

bols, use the weight of the bag or number of pounds of

seed ordered to determine weight. Add all pro ducts to

get total weight. Any individual item weighing 40 lb. or

more must be shipped by itself to prevent damage to

other items.

2.) USE CHARTS ABOVE TO GET ZONE AND

FREIGHT CHARGE FOR WEIGHT TO YOUR ZONE.

These charts will give you an estimated freight charge and

should be close to what you will actually be charged. We

will weigh each order and only charge you the weight of

your actual package. Over 200 lb. will go common carrier,

freight collect or UPS if cheaper.

3.) CALCULATE HANDLING CHARGE. There are a very

few instances where an item has an additional handling

charge (labeled AH) assessed by the freight carrier. UPS

AH fee is $7.50 per item.
