C.L.A.S.S. Registration Requirements & Information:

Registration is required for ALL classes 1 week in advance. Call 864-4167 or online at www.ca.uky.edu/laurel.

Class fees must be paid in advance. Please make checks payable to Laurel County Cooperative Extension. Credit cards are accepted in person and when registering online.

When registering online or by phone, Extension will hold your spot for two weeks until payment is received. If payment is not received 1 week prior to class, your registration will be forfeited.

Please be considerate of others. If you cannot attend please notify the Extension Office so others can participate in the program.

Refunds will only be given if the class is canceled by the Extension Office or if participant requests a refund one week prior to class—unless advertised differently.

Registration is required to receive notification of class changes or cancellation.

In the event that insufficient registration requires cancellation of a class, participants will be notified prior to the class by phone. We only notify those that have registered.

If Laurel County Schools are canceled due to inclement weather all C.L.A.S.S. programs will be canceled. If in doubt, please call the Extension Office at 864-4167 for confirmation or follow us on FACEBOOK at laurelcountyfcs.

Have you recently been told by your doctor that for health reasons you need to reduce, monitor, or control your carbohydrate intake but don't know how? Have you or a family member been diagnosed with diabetes? Are you wondering how to manage your diabetes day to day? Join us for this discussion class as we cover the basics of understanding and managing your diabetes. We will also be covering the importance of your healthcare team. Lunch will be provided for registered attendees.

Diabetes: Lunch & Learn

During this four session class, students will quickly learn how easy it is to create that special decorated dessert for any and all occasions. Students will learn to ice and decorate a cake and other sweet treats, make several different buttercream icing flowers, pipe lines and make simple borders, letters and shapes on your cake; transfer images to a cake to decorate, make icing the right consistency to decorate; fill and use a decorating bag, and much more.

Class Notes: Supply list is available online or at the office. Students do not need to bring anything for the first class.

Cake Decorating Basics

This is an open workshop day to work on your unfinished projects. Help is available if needed. Come join others who need a place to spread out, encouragement, or perhaps just a set aside time to work. Participants will bring their own personal projects, necessary tools and supplies.

If you have ever said “I wish I knew how to sew?” or “Someday, I am going to learn to sew!” then this class is for you! This week long evening sewing class for designed for the adult beginners. We will be supplying the sewing machine, supplies and basic tools so students may come and focus on the process of sewing. We will be starting with the basics including the components of the sewing machine, the supplies, and some of the tools you will be using. Each day, students will add to their skill set and will be able to take home several completed projects by the end of the week. The class fee includes all tools, supplies and equipment needed—so sign up and get “Learn to Sew” off your list of to-do’s. For students who can’t attend this class in the evenings—watch for a morning series which will be offered in the spring.

Beginners will enjoy learning basic acrylic painting techniques while creating this charming donkey on a 11 x 14 canvas board. All supplies are included and students will take home their finished artwork.

Do you want to feed your family wonderful meals but find that sometimes you just run out of time? There are many wonderful casseroles and one-dish meals that are simple to prepare, offer variety and great flavor, and stand up well to freezing and reheating. Freezing is one of the easiest, most convenient, and least time consuming methods of putting a meal on the table in a hurry. Students will be encouraged to participate as we make some of the featured recipes and try samples. Register and join us as we explore "Make Ahead Meals" so that you can enjoy your family mealtime - even when you are short on time!



Family Mealtime: Make Ahead Meals with Beef

During this class you will learn to recognize different types of vintage and modern applique. For those that don’t want to spend the time doing hand applique, you will learn the fundamentals of other techniques that will give a similar affect to home décor items. An optional workshop for those who want to learn to hand applique is available following the class.

Let's Learn to Applique

Mono Printing is a form of printmaking that has lines or images that can only be made once, unlike most forms of printmaking. During this two session class, students will not only learn a technique of reverse painting to create images, but they will also create their own gelli print block to take home. During the first session, students will make their gelli print block and create sample pieces using the instructors blocks. During the second session, students will use their own blocks to create one of a kind art pieces, use resist techniques, and explore secondary uses for their artwork. Students are encouraged to bring artist paper if they want. If you are a students from a previous class who would like to sharpen their skills, you are welcome to attend the 2nd class on 9/6/18 for $20.

Beginners to advanced, all levels are welcome to attend this workshop. Students will learn the art of copper foil stained glass while making an 8" x 8" wall hanging in the design of a quilt block. Class includes all materials and tools necessary to complete the project. Students must supply and wear closed toe shoes and safety glasses.

Farmers Feast Tuesday, August 28th

Meet the farmers of the London Laurel Farmers Market, enjoy the music and some fabulous food while supporting God's Pantry Food Bank. The Farmers Feast will be held at the Farmers Market on the corner of Main & Dixie. Festivities begin at 6:00 PM. Tickets are available at our office (limited to the first 200 guests).


Beginners will enjoy learning basic acrylic painting techniques while creating this summery floral still life on a 16 x 20 art board. All supplies are included and students will take home their finished artwork.

Start by joining this class taught by Judy Foister as students learn the ins and outs of free motion machine quilting. This workshop will include how to set up a quilt, starting and stopping stitches, walking foot options, background fillers, and many more tips to help you become a successful free motion quilter! This class will is intended for the intermediate / advanced sewer who is looking to add to their skill set and is not appropriate for a beginning sewer. Jerky is a lightweight, dried meat product that is growing in popularity all across the country. Join us for a demonstration on how to prepare jerky that is not only delicious but also safe to eat. Students will get to sample different types of jerky.

This lesson will teach you ideas of gifts to give to others either for birthdays, thinking of you, or just to show thanks. Family Mealtime: Make Ahead Meals with Chicken

Students in this demonstration class are going to enjoy an entertaining class full of great tips and yummy samples! Our instructor is going to show you how to take one whole chicken and turn it into six great meals! Cooking the chicken in a crock pot makes for a tender, juicy chicken, great broth and easy cooking. Once cooked, the chicken becomes your star ingredient for these budget friendly entrees.

Join us for this discussion class as we cover the importance of your Hemoglobin A1C in the management of your diabetes. Lunch will be provided for registered attendees.

Turkey Door Wreath

Wet felting is the process of combining layers of wool roving and/or wool yarns into one flat piece of felt fabric. This is most people think about as the traditional or oldest felting method. Nuno felting is the process of felting wool roving and/or wool yarn onto another fabric. In the wet felting process, hot water is applied to layers of animal hairs, while repeated agitation and compression causes the fibers to hook together or weave together into a single piece of fabric. During this class, students will be following the felting process and using their felted fabric to create a 3-D pod.



Wet Felting

Turn your oven into a campfire experience. During this class we will look at easy camp meals, also called tin-foil pack meals, that allow you to enjoy a family meal without the pots and pans. As the camp cook all you will need is a little aluminum foil and a few prepped ingredients. Let your crew create, wrap and cook their own meal and you will have a delicious family meal without a lot of preparation time or clean up. Students will be encouraged to participate as we make some of the featured recipes and try samples. Register to join us and explore camp meals at home.



Family Mealtime: Camp Meals

Students of all levels are welcome to attend 3-D stained glass class. During this two session class students will learn to create this 8" high 3-D stained glass waterlily. Class includes all materials and tools necessary to complete the project. Students must supply and wear closed toe shoes and safety glasses.

Join us and learn to turn your basic cupcakes into a fun and festive treat. Make them spooky or kooky—either way they will make your Halloween much sweeter. Students will decorate a dozen cupcakes to take home. All supplies for this class are included in the class fee but students need to bring a container to carry their goodies home.

Students in this class will need to bring a yard of solid background fabric, a bag of scraps, and their imagination which they will use to create a quilt made without a pattern. If you don’t enjoy a certain technique… you don’t have to do it! Just improv as you go and create your one of a kind masterpiece!

Come join this lesson, and learn quick and easy ways to decorate and entertain for the holidays. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn easy gift giving ideas and register for a hands-on craft. Class fee includes holiday refreshments and your choice of a craft workshop.



Holiday Ideas - Homemaker Lesson

Students in this two session class will learn to weave a small stool using shaker tape and sea grass. Class fee includes all project supplies including a locally made, Kentucky Crafted stool frame created by Red Dog & Company. Students will need to bring basic basket making supplies (listed online at http://laurel.ca.uk.edu).

Woven Footstool

Join us as we learn the traditional Appalachian craft of making corn husk doll or angle. The simple beauty resulting from this harvest-time activity will make a wonderful addition to your fall decorations. Students will need to bring an old bath towel but all other supplies are included in the class fee. This class is for adult learners only. The advanced crafters may finish early and will have the opportunity to participate in a bonus lesson on creating simple corn husk flowers.

Join us and learn the basics of crochet while you make this messy bun / ponytail beanie so that you can keep your head warm and your hair just the way you like it! Students will need to bring a size H crochet hook, 1 large rope or a skein of yarn of their choice—select a light color of yarn as it is easier to see your stitches. Those students who don’t finish their project during class are welcome to attend our “Made By You” class on November 14th for additional time and assistance.



Crochet an Easy Messy Bun Boggin

Did you know that if you have diabetes you are more likely to develop high blood pressure, also known as hypertension? If you or a family member have been diagnosed with diabetes, join us for this discussion class as we review the basics of blood pressure, how it is measured, terms and numbers, as well as methods to help control your blood pressure as a diabetic. Lunch will be provided for registered attendees.




Whether you are a seasoned hostess or you are looking ahead at hosting your first holiday dinner for the family - planning is the key to success. During this class we will be looking at managing holiday expenses, menu planning and determining how much food to prepare.

For anyone that is busy and has limited time to spend preparing healthy meals, this class is for you. Slow cooking gives you the advantage of having a hot nutritious meal with little or no supervision. After a busy day your family can sit down with a meal that is hot and ready to eat instead of snacking or reaching for a sandwich. Join us as we teach you the basics and let you sample some delicious food prepared using the techniques shared in class.

Holiday Cooking School will feature food booths with plenty of samples, tablescapes with holiday decorating ideas, and demonstrations from experts in the field. Holiday Cooking School

Just in time for Holiday entertaining, learn how to give your food more eye appeal. In this class you will learn how to make several different vegetable and fruit garnishes to enhance the appearance of your food preparation. At the completion of this class your family and friends will be amazed by your new culinary skills when you display your newly created garnishes that you take home.

Dining with Diabetes is a health and wellness program that consist of a series of four classes that includes learning, demonstrations and tasting healthy foods. The program's focus is to help individuals learn strategies to lessen the health risks of diabetes and is designed for people with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. In a series of four classes, cooking demonstrations will help you learn healthy techniques to use in your own kitchen. Sign up for Dining with Diabetes and you’ll learn how to incorporate good, healthy cooking techniques and other practices to help you control your blood sugar. The program includes sampling healthy foods and discussion with a dietitian or certified diabetes educator. Our lessons will focus on Living with Diabetes, Carbohydrates, Fats and Sodium, and Putting it Together.

Students will learn the basics of wire wrap jewelry, learn about the tools commonly used, supplies and techniques while making a lovely wire wrap leaf copper pendant. If you have them, you may bring your own jewelry tools (hammer, plyers, wire cutters) but it is not necessary. All supplies and tools will be provided in the class fee. If you want a different wire you are welcome to bring it (you will need a 16 and 24 gauge spool) but the class fee will remain the same. Students will be making the pendant only, the chain is not included.

Start your own family heirlooms as you create a beautiful ornament with local clay artist, Kim Patton. Polymer clay is a versatile oven baked clay that can be made into almost anything with no large kiln required. During this class you will learn how to work with polymer clay, embellish, bake and paint your own ornament.

Join us for a fun filled break with java and acrylics. Enjoy a painting experience as our talented instructor walks you through the step-by-step acrylic process. You can follow along exactly or add your own artistic twist; but, everyone will leave with a unique and beautiful piece of work. We encourage all attendees to bring their own acrylics and brushes; but it's not necessary. Wear your painting clothes and bring a good attitude, an adventurous spirit, and your favorite coffee mug!

What should you know about cholesterol if you have diabetes? What is "good" and "bad" cholesterol and how can you manage your levels? If you or a family member have been diagnosed with diabetes and you have questions about cholesterol, then join us for our "Lunch and Learn" discussion class as we examine this important topic. Lunch will be provided for registered attendees.




Time is valuable and in short supply no matter where you are. As a result, you may look at family mealtime as extra work added to an already packed schedule. Preparing dinner does not have to be a dreaded chore. During this class we will look at using pantry items, flavor, or commercial mixes that can be assembled into an assortment of delicious meals. Join us as we learn to make family mealtime easier by learning to "make your own" casserole that can be prepared ahead to bake when arriving home.

Join this class and learn what you need to know about how to make the perfect cheese plate for your next dinner party or for upcoming holiday entertaining. Participants will make a cheese plate to take home with up to two pounds of cheese and/or fruit and garnishes.

As a diabetic, the food choices that you make influence how well you will manage your diabetes. During this month's "Lunch and Learn" we will focus on the Diabetes Food Pyramid as a guide for an overall healthy diet and how it fits with a diabetes meal plan. We will also discuss how to "think your plate" to help control blood glucose. If you or a family member have been diagnosed with diabetes, join us for this discussion class as we review these important topics. Lunch will be provided for registered attendees.




There’s nothing quite as good on a cold winter day as a hot bowl of soup or a cool refreshing soup on a hot summer day. Start with soup and add a sandwich or a salad and fruit and have a great meal. Join us as we learn about the different types of soups, share recipes, sample soup, and learn how to add soup to your family menu.

Join us and learn the basics of crochet while you make a baby blanket to keep someone special warm this winter. Students will need to bring a size H crochet hook, 1 large roll of Bernat baby yarn. Those students who don’t finish their project during class are welcome to attend our “Made By You” classes for additional time and assistance.

Our 2019 Featured Teacher Rob Appell, is host of Man Sewing, a quilter, fabric designer, author of books and quilt patterns, and an inventor of sewing and quilting tools. Rob blends his love for the ocean with his work as a textile artist and designer. Rob will be teaching three workshops, including The Wave: Reverse Applique, 3D Tumbling Blocks, and Machine Quilting during our

conference and will be presenting his trunk show on Thursday evening. Join us and be inspired by this creative, high energy, caffeine loving man who is passionate about sewing!

In addition to our featured teacher’s workshops, we have over 20 fabulous workshops taught by instructors from all over Kentucky.
