St. Catherine’s Academy

Live in love for one anotherDear Friends of St. Catherine’s,

Blessings to each of you and your families during this holy season of Advent and glorious Joyful Christmas time! It is the same story, the same sacred event and has been celebrated for over 2000 years. The birth and life of Jesus Christ. Let us pray that each year helps us to dig deeper into the mystery of this holy time and to be the eyes, ears, hand, feet, heart, and compassion of Christ for one another.

Our world is in great need of peace and we pray that our young men will contribute peace to all with whom they are in contact.

Our Dominican Charism has become enfl eshed more and more each year as we emphasize the four pillars of the Dominican Order – Community, Ministry, Study and Prayer. Our theme for this year is “To Praise, To Bless, To Preach, as we live in love for one another.” These words have been handed down to us over the last 800 years from our holy father St. Dominic. As Dominicans, we

strive to put this into action. We invite you to join us as members of the Dominican Family

through your connection with St. Catherine’s to make these words

come alive in our hearts.

We have added some newness to our school facilities.

Our Library has been divided by a lovely wall and we have a renovated Library on one side of the wall and the Aquinas Think Tank/robotics classroom on the other side. We are grateful to all who helped this to become a reality, especially a large gift from the John F. Shea Foundation. The boys are excited to get into coding and robotics. Stop by to see our new space when you can.

We are so proud of our wonderful boys and staff. You too, are part of the family of St. Catherine’s and we love to see you when you visit!

May your hearts be fi lled with God’s special love during this beautiful season and may you hear the invitation of God’s Son to fi nd and live the mystery of Christmas as you grow deeper in your faith, compassion and gratitude.

With a loving and grateful heart –

Sister Johnellen Turner, OPAdministrator/Principal

Blessings are overfl owing at SCA! We are ever thankful for you, our loyal donors, families, friends, and alumni.

It’s so vital to continue the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose vision and mission of serving fi ne young men and creating a foundation for our future leaders. Because of your support, SCA generated a net operating profi t of $130,677 for 2016/2017 fi scal year and was able to invest in academic programs, technology, and facilities renovation at our historical 128 year campus.

During the last year, we made progress building SCA’s fi nancial strength and increasing our reserves above $2 million while remaining debt free. The creation of a brand new scholarship program, The Mother Pia Backes Underserved Scholarship Program, provides 100% scholarships to deserving boys living in at-risk environments, and serves Mother Pia’s legacy of helping the young, poor, and vulnerable.

As our partners in education, you have helped SCA accomplish the following:• Install 11 air conditioning units for the Sisters living in the

convent• Renovate our 4 open-style dormitories by installing new

energy effi cient windows, LED lighting, window coverings, and furniture within a freshly painted and colorful setting

• Award $584,000 in tuition assistance to 93 students in need• Complete a variety of campus maintenance projects,

including roof re-coating and staff housing repairs• Upgrade the MSJ Learning Support Center with a

SmartBoard projector and software• Create an additional layer of security by improving the

Firewall components We close 2016/2017 with gratitude and look forward to

the 2017/2018 school year with its new challenges and rewards. Thank you to our devoted supporters and friends for your generosity, partnership, and investment in our youth.

Best regards,

August 7, 2017 – ANAHEIM, Calif.– St.

Catherine’s Academy, in Anaheim, CA hosted its Annual Leadership Camp, an 8-day off-site summer excursion that took place at the San Luis Obispo National Guard Base from July 26 through August 2, 2017. The program provided a week fi lled with adventures, learning, excitement and prayer. The program was open to boys and girls ages 10 to 16.

During the 8-day camp at San Luis Obispo National Guard Base, nearly 90 students participated in a variety of activities, including obstacle courses, land navigation training, and leadership reaction exercises. Students also participated in presentations and discussions about leadership throughout the

week. The camp was centered around St. Catherine’s Academy’s four Dominican Pillars: Community, Ministry, Study, and Prayer. Colonel Barry Bizzell, Captain Ramos and staff of St. Catherine’s Academy led the exciting camp.

Each day, boys and girls were challenged physically and mentally

through exhilarating activities, all while learning the importance of discipline, structure, and fellowship.

“Leadership Camp provided a wonderful learning environment,” said Colonel Barry Bizzell.” “Students engaged in the fundamentals of leadership, discipline, and teamwork. Our program helped to shape students’ motivation and self-confi dence.”

St. Catherine’s Academy is truly one of a kind, so it’s no wonder that it attracts students from all

over the world. Our current study body includes 25 international students from Mexico, South Africa, Vietnam and China. In recent years, SCA has also been home to students from Thailand, South Korea, Australia, the Philippines, Russia, and Nigeria.

SCA’s international program fi rst began in 1936 and consisted of students from Mexico who wanted to learn English, and experience life in America. Our tradition of Mexican cadets remains very strong with many “legacy” students following in the footsteps of their fathers and grandfathers who attended SCA decades earlier.

English Language Instruction

SCA is pleased to welcome our newest teacher Mrs. Theresa FitzMaurice. St. Catherine’s Academy offers an English Language Learners (ELL) program for students whose native language is not English. Students in the

program take self-contained classes in English-heavy subjects such as literature, grammar, and history and join mainstream classes for subjects such as math, science, and music. This combination supports students as they develop fl uency, and also challenges them to practice newly acquired skills. Many ELL students are ready to be completely mainstreamed after just one year in the program.

A Diverse Community

An important aspect of SCA’s International Program for both foreign and domestic students is the diverse community it creates. Students learn many lessons outside the classroom, such as respect for different cultures, international customs and traditions, and hospitality. Most importantly, they develop friendships with other boys from around the world. This is true preparation to become the future leaders of our global society!

International Program Continues to Grow

Dear Parent / Guardian,

The school year is off to an exciting start, and I am so excited to be working with a school so rich in history and tradition. While Cadets are smoothly transitioning back into the routine of learning, be proud that you have successfully completed your “Back to School” tasks - and survived! Good Job!

God continues to bless all with a holy and gracious presence that assures us we are on the right path.

We spoke at “Registration” about the ways you can get involved in the St. Catherine’s community, have a lot of fun, make new friends, and really make a difference…here’s how:

• Breakfast With Santa December 9, 2017• Christmas Program and Drill December 22, 2017• Military Ball on March 3,2018 (let’s get fancy!)• Golf Tournament May 21, 2018 (exclusive-Hacienda Golf Course)

St. Catherine’s needs YOUR help.

A successful Annual Appeal takes the cadets’ experience beyond what tuition alone can provide. Your contribution now helps cadets that need tuition assistance. Reaching our goal of 100% parent participation will:

• Provide Financial Assistance for cadets through our Mother Pia program• Meet Athletic & Music Needs for the school year• Provide on-going enhancements to the library, and robotics program• Generally, support the school!

Included are Leadership Giving Levels for you to consider. So that you can help more than you think possible, pledges can be paid over this school year (8 months), billed as desired, by check, or credit card. Remember, your gift is 100% tax-deductible!

If you have any questions, would like to meet, or would like a campus tour, please call and I will make the arrangements. I look forward to working with you, and receiving your support.

God’s special blessings!

With a loving and grateful heart,

Sister Johnellen Turner, OPAdministrator/Principal

St. Catherine’s Academy (SCA) is gearing up for a shift in its academic approach, introducing a new STREAM

(Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) program. The program will take place in the new and exciting Aquinas Think Tank lab. It was unveiled on October 23, 2017 and formally launched on November 7th, 2017 offering students something new, exciting and educational.

The event began with a blessing by Bishop Kevin Vann and Reverend Ed Poettgen and was celebrated by nearly 160 students, Shea family, and staff members. Special donors were thanked for their generosity in making this program possible. The Aquinas Think Tank was designed to be a creative space aimed to allow students who are interested in pursuing coding and robotics opportunities. The goal of the program is to promote critical thinking in a collaborative setting. SCA students can expect to use various types of equipment (Little Bits Steam Set, Sphero Sprk +, Legos EV3 Robotic Kit and a 3D printer) as they are challenged to analyze and solve problems. Students will work closely with their peers as they become innovative thinkers.

“We are so proud to finally bring such a wonderful state-of-the-art program to our students. Teachers will be incorporating the use of new technology into their lesson plans and activities,” said Sister Johnellen Turner, Administrator/Principal. “There will also be an after-school club available for students who are interested.”

The lab was named after St. Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican Saint. As an all-boys Catholic school sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, the name seemed very fitting.

A big thank you to our facility maintenance team. Because of their hard work and presence to

detail, our 8 1/2 acre property stays beautiful, and in good working condition.

On August 1, 2017 we were introduced to a new maintenance software called “ School Dude”. All work orders must be submitted online and then processed. Manuel and his team have done a tremendous job in learning the new software and implementing it with such ease.

As of August 1, 2017 we implemented a new kitchen program called “Culinart”. Our Chefs

are now cooking everything from scratch, with all fresh ingredients! As we take the leap with this new way of cooking, our students and staff thank you for showing us love through the delicious meals they serve us.
