Nu State President 2015-2017 Pictured with Dr. Kay Clawson, NE Regional Director 2014-2016
Welcome and greetings to each of you as we celebrate our second year of Biennium
2015-2017! Our first year has been filled with numerous activities that have brought
favorable recognition to you, our outstanding and talented Key Women Educators
who make up DKG Nu State District of Columbia!! At the DKG International Convention, led by Dr. Lyn Schmid, now
Immediate Past President, we had one of the best conventions ever!!
r. Cherie Ward received a standing ovation at the Fourth General Meeting of the 2016 DKG International
Convention for her remarks on the first half of the biennial theme: 85 Years and Beyond and for her poem, By
the Rubrics of Rhythm They’ll Read. We were proud that two Alpha Chapter members, Dr. Cherie Ward and Dr.
Barbara Parks-Lee both presented outstanding breakout sessions at the convention. In addition, as a new member of the
DKG International Executive Board, I was honored to present my credentials to our very own, Ms. Anita M. Walls,
Immediate Past Nu State President, as she served on the international credentials committee. In addition, Dr. Lyn, as she
is affectionately known among us in District of Columbia, requested that I bring remarks on the second half of the last
international theme, Advancing Key Women Educators For Life, at the closing meeting of the international board on
Saturday, July 9, 2016.
e were also very
pleased to see the
relatives of Dr.
Dorothy Johnson participating in
the Celebration of Life in honor of
her and other women of Delta
Kappa Gamma. We were pleased
that Bernice Seals was able to
attend the international convention
as new president of Alpha Chapter
and that Diane Robinson, Past
Northeast Regional Director was
also able to be present for much of
the convention.
It gives me great pleasure
to acknowledge the outstanding
work of our outgoing chapter
presidents for their dedicated work
to Nu State. Thanks to Betty Cade
– Alpha Chapter, Carol Tatum,
Beta Chapter, Joyce Williams,
Delta Chapter, and Beverly Battle,
Nu Zeta Chapter for concluding
their activities with high levels of
excellence! All chapters are working cohesively to accomplish all DKG and
Nu State goals. We welcome the new presidents and thank each of them for
stepping up to the plate: Bernice Seals, Alpha Chapter; Joyce Williams, in her
second Biennium; Carol Tatum, also in her second Biennium; and Patricia
Ford Neal, Nu Zeta President.
Our state officers and committee chairpersons engaged in an
outstanding Leadership Conference that featured Past International President
Jean Gray as keynote speaker. The day was well-attended with more than 50
Nu State Executive Board members and Nu State chapter officers and
chairpersons in attendance. We also thank Diane Robinson for her excellent
assistance in helping us to organize a day that would be beneficial to all in
attendance. A big thank you to our Leadership Development Team, headed by
Lenora Scott, Chairperson and Nu State 2nd
Vice President, and her
exceptional team: Geraldine Meredith, Alpha; Dr. Donna Graham, Beta;
Carolyn Kornegay, Delta; and Shadonne Moses, Nu Zeta. Stay tuned for
additional Leadership training as the final year of our Biennium draws to a
close. We want to ensure that all members have opportunities to participate in
training activities so that we may increase our “leadership readiness” in years
to come.
As our Winter Meeting approaches, please plan now to attend. We
want to hear from the Nominations Committee on its recommended slate of
new officers for Biennium 2017-2019 and present the report of the Rules
Committee as we update the changes that were approved at the Indianapolis
and Nashville International Conventions!. I am looking forward to greeting
you at our Nu State Holiday Celebration Luncheon!

From the Desk of the First Vice President and
Educational Excellence Chairperson Beverly Battle 2015-2017
Greetings, Nu State District of Columbia, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International. As I begin my second year as First Vice-President and
Educational Excellence Committee Chairperson, I will continue to serve with a
renewed commitment to our organization while inspiring other key women
educators to become involved in the activities of our state organization.
The goals of the Educational Excellence Committee are as follows:
Goal 1: Advance Excellence in Education
Goal 2: Empower Women
Goal 3: Increase Global Awareness
The Educational Excellence Committee members for this year are: Dr. Azalie Hightower (Alpha), Gertrude
“Trudy” Jones (Beta), Carolyn D. Kornegay (Delta), Carolyn McNair (Nu Zeta), Maria Angala (CTAUN Liaison), and
Dr. Helen Flagg, ex officio member. Angela Rice (Beta) continues to lend her support to our committee. This team of
hard-working ladies has been very productive in performing the tasks we have completed thus far.
In August we held our first Educational Excellence Committee meeting at Ledo’s Pizza. In welcoming new members to
our committee, their duties as EEC members were explained to them. In addition to our first meeting, we have held our
second and third committee meetings at Ledo’s as well as The Doubletree Hotel respectively.
After having a very successful 2016 Spring Convention/Luncheon with our Past International President, Dr. Lyn Schmid
as our guest speaker, the plans for our 2016 Winter Meeting/Holiday Celebration Luncheon are being made. This year’s
event will be held at the The Doubletree Hotel by Hilton in Silver Spring, Maryland on Saturday, December 3, 2016. This
celebration will be a festive holiday event with entertainment, dancing, and lots of fun. Look for the flyer and registration
form with more information in this newsletter and via email. Invite family and friends to join us for this festive occasion.
As a guest at Delta Chapter’s first meeting of the year, I had the privilege of meeting and then listening to the Interim
Chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools, John Davis. His presentation was very informative as he gave a
brief overview of the state of our schools during his short time in this position.
Chapters have adopted DC Public Schools as well as schools in neighboring areas. School supplies were collected for
students this year and for our Early-Career Educators. Members assisted teachers in getting their classrooms ready for
the opening of school, also. In addition to supporting Early- Career Educators, chapters will, also, support active
teachers in their chapters by providing them with resources throughout the year. An EEC Monthly Newsletter from former
EEC member, Joanne Finney, is shared with all chapters. The collection of donations for Schools for Africa is ongoing.

Margaret “Peggy” Chambers, Nu State - Fine Arts Liaison
Sam Cook's melody "It's Been A long Time Coming" accurately articulates the Grand
Opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and
Culture (NMAAHC).. Lonnie G. Bunch III, the Founding Director, believed that our
country would be made better by remembering and acknowledging and celebrating the rich history and culture of the
African American community. On September 24, 2016 a dream that was too long deferred became a reality!!
To continue the journey of knowledge via an African American lens; The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Nu
State District of Columbia Humanities and Arts Committee (HAC) registered for tickets to NMAAHC. All chapters had
a Family and Friends visitation day to the museum. It was a rewarding and inspirational experience. We were able to
witness African American creativity and cultural expressions through art, dance, music, theater, and literature. All agreed
that there was so much to see that we would have to visit again for at least two or three more visits to absorb everything..
HAC's adopted school --Savoy Elementary-- participated in the visit to the Museum. The principal, teachers ,and parents
were elated to have the opportunity to witness the triumphs and sacrifices documented in the Museum.

Alpha Chapter Strives for Excellence and Collegiality in Tennessee and Delaware
Barbara D. Parks-Lee, Ph.D.
As the seasons transition from summer to autumn, Alpha Chapter members have been busy reaching new heights of
excellence as participants in the International Conference at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and at the
October 1, 2016, Arts Conference in Smyrna, Delaware. As members presented workshops and participated in
workshops, friendships and collegial connections blossomed.
The International Conference was attended by members of Nu State, Alpha and Delta Chapters, including Dr. Helen
Flagg, Nu State President, Alpha President Bernice Seals, past President Anita Walls, past Northeast Regional Director
Diane Robinson, and workshop presenters Dr. Cherie Ward and Dr. Barbara D. Parks-Lee. Dr. Ward was also an opening
participant in one of the large general sessions of the convention, and her poetry set to
music had the audience on its feet for a two minutes ovation.
The Northeast Regional DKG Four States Joint Creative Arts Seminar in Smyrna,
Delaware, included Delta Kappa Gamma members and presenters from Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, DC. The all-day seminar included workshops in
Mosaic and Card Making by Christine Redman from Maryland; Culinary Sweets by
Marjorie Chappel from Delaware;
Genealogy by Carol Miller-Schultz
from Maryland; Nature’s Angels by
Wendy Happel from Maryland; Fall Craft by Tina Riley from
Delaware; Finger Painting by Sally Clark from Maryland; Cake
Making and Book Club by Tracey Dusch from Pennsylvania; Dance
by Carolyn McNair and Patricia Neal from DC; Singing by Joan
Wiggins from Maryland; and Soulful Harvest and Poetry by Dr.
Barbara Parks-Lee from DC.
Members from all states participated in the Poetry and Soulful
Harvest (Memoir) sessions, and each member exuded warmth and
willingness to be supportive to each other as they shared the
beginnings of their poems or memoir sessions. Past International
President Dr. Lyn Schmid participated in both sessions. Everyone took their beginning pieces home to complete as
“homework.” After all, what meeting with educators could be complete without a home assignment? It is hopeful that
each member of the arts seminar will consider submitting her work to the winter arts and humanities gallery.
The summer and autumn of 2016 have been times of travel, outreach, sharing, and learning as members of Nu State and
Alpha Chapter have been willing participants in the international convention in Nashville, Tennessee, and in the DKG
Four States Joint Creative Arts Seminar in Smyrna, Delaware. We continue to grow as distinguished women educators.
As autumn progresses, may the transitions in the colors and temperatures encourage us all to look forward to providing
opportunities for personal growth and professional service.

Beta Chapter is off to a great start this
year. Our first meeting was in September so
that we could pass out supply bags to our
active teachers. Our retired teachers were so
generous that we were able to fill seven large
commemorative President Obama and
Family supply bags with “get started” items.
Our active teachers were so appreciative.
Thanks to our Arts and Humanities
Chair, Peggy Chambers, we were fortunate to
attend the new Smithsonian National
Museum of African-American History and
Culture on September 26, 2016. It was an
awesome experience for our Beta members.
One of the highlights of our trip, besides the
fine dining in the café, was seeing Museum Director Lonnie Bunche as he came through the museum with
guests. Everyone applauded him. We are so grateful to have Peggy Chambers as one of our active members!
In November, the Beta Chapter will have
an arts and crafts meeting led by our own
talented Dr. Donna Graham. We are looking
forward to learning to make cards and we will
eventually have Donna show us how to make
quilts almost as beautiful as those she makes.

For 2016-2017, Nu Zeta Chapter is demonstrating how DKG members support
the goals of Nu State through their Sojourning Heights by using the wisdom of
Sojourner Truth and the action of Dorothy Irene Height. Nu Zeta members have
actively participated in Nu State Leadership Training, participated and presented
at the Northeast Regional Four States Joint Creative Arts Seminar, provided
educational monthly chapter newsletters filled with educational resources to
educators, recognized chapter members , and engaged members in chapter fellowship activities.
Nu Zeta provided continued awareness of African Americans in history by joining Nu State members, family and friends
during the month of October at the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.
In November, members will engage in voter awareness to raise awareness, educate voters, and ensure that all eligible
members of our nation exercise their right to vote in this important election..
Nu Zeta Chapter will support American Education Week in November with our adopted schools by providing student

We have had great success with our Non-Dues revenue projects so much so that we
are taking another order for our bling tee shirt. We have also been approached by
chapters outside of DC to purchase them through Nu State. Again the bling shirt
will be $30.00, and the order and payment must be in no later than the end of
October. I would like to have them back before Christmas. Many thanks to
Thaddeus Griffin and her daughter, Beverly, for their help with this project.
Without them, it would not have been possible.
This spring we are planning to participate in the funds2org.com shoe drive. This
will be headed by Alpha Chapter’s Non Dues Chair Audrienne Womack. We are
asking each member in every chapter to collect 25 pairs of gently used or new shoes to contribute to the cause.
So as you clean out your closet after the holiday, please remember our project.
Many of the chapters created their own non-dues revenue events, and we are so proud of them.
Schools for Africa
chools for Africa became the Society's first official
international project in 2010. Currently the project works
with 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa including Angola,
Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa,
Zimbabwe, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ethiopia and
Madagascar. The SFA mission involves providing access to
quality basic education for children, focusing on girls, orphans and
other vulnerable youngsters. UNICEF works through this project
with governments, local authorities, communities and other
partners. Remember – your donation to SFA is appreciated and it is tax-deductible. Please give to this
international project!
