Ethics/SpiritualityCarmelite Spirituality— St. Teresa of Avila (CE-MO31A-5W)Studying and experiencing Carmelite spirituality offers us opportunities to enter more deeply into relationship with God, others, and ourselves. St. Teresa’s stages of prayer as described in Interior Castle are as relevant to 21st century seekers as they were in the 16th century when St. Teresa first compiled them. Learn more about the divine invitation to experience God through an interior life of prayer. Instructor: Jan Sheridan, MA, 5 weeks, Wednesdays beginning Sept. 14, 6:30–8:30 p.m. ($65)

Contemporary Issues in Catholicism (CE-SY300)

This course will examine a wide range of issues as addressed by various Catholic writers on doctrine, prayer, worship, ecumenism, and inter-religious relations. Instructor: Rev. John Mack, STL, 15 weeks, Thursdays beginning Sept. 1, 9:15-11:45 a.m. ($245)

Carmelite Spirituality— St. John of the Cross (CE-MO31B-5W)The writings of John of the Cross deepen our understanding and experience of Carmelite spirituality, especially in dealing with obstacles to prayer encountered in the dark night of the senses and the subsequent dark night of the soul. These become signposts on the journey to oneness with God. We will delve into John’s poetry as well as his commentaries on his poems, as we expand our understanding of how we encounter God in prayer. (Taking the previous course on Carmelite Spirituality and St. Teresa of Avila is not a prerequisite). Instructor: Jan Sheridan, MA, 5 weeks, Wednesdays beginning Oct. 19, 6:30–8:30 p.m. ($65)

Catholics and Protestants in Dialogue: A Historical and Theological Study (CE-MO32A-10W & CE-MO32B-10W)

Over the centuries there has been, and continues to be, a general discussion of what separates and also unites the faiths of Christianity. Since the Reformation, the dialogue between Catholics and Protestants has been at times acrimonious as well as harmonious. This course will examine the historical nature of these discussions through a review of traditional Catholic and Protestant doctrines and various documents issued by all denominations which highlight key issues. Additionally, we will also explore the historical differences and theological challenges encountered by European and American Christians within this dialogue. Instructor: Paul Lubienecki, PhD

TheologyJesus the Christ: Fully Human, Fully Divine—“Christology” (CE-SY12A-10W & CE-SY12B-10W)

The center of the gospel and the Christian life is the living person, Jesus of Nazareth, crucified and risen, and confessed as the Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of the World. We will consider the historical Jesus in his words and deeds, and the significance of his death and resurrection. Our discussions will explore our beliefs about who he is and why he matters. The process involves daily prayer, short scripture passages, and reflection over 8 months. An appointed spiritual director meets weekly for an hour with the “retreatants” in a small group.
