and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Other topics dis-cussed include house training, mouthing, leadership, sitting and recall. This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2-4 months old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations prior to attending. If not, please plan to attend class without your dog until all vaccinations are administered.



CREATIvE PAwS - dOG OBEdIENCE RALLYAshlee trotterRally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and the handler. Rally is a sport in which all dogs are encouraged to participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn the fundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to take this course. In rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tail are as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only al-lowed to, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs dur-ing the competition with verbal praise, petting and even food rewards! Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying the work and each other’s company.

Michael “The Dog Guru” JaykoWith 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience,

agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelor’s Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between the dog and its handler.

As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues.

You can often see Michael biking or roller blading with a dog or walking a large pack through the neighborhoods of the 60093 zip code. As a member of the Winnetka-Northfield community Michael also gives dog safety talks to schools as well as Boy and Girl Scout troops.

abouT The insTrucTorsJenifer Thoem has been sculpting in clay and teaching for over 20 years. A native Georgian, she received a BFA in

Ceramics from Georgia Southern University in 1994. She moved to Wilmette from Richmond, VA where she owned and operated The Creative Foundry, a ceramics production/teaching studio. Jenifer has experience teaching classes in both public and private schools, and Community Recreation Ceramic Centers in both Georgia and Virginia. Jenifer’s whimsical clay and found object sculptures can be found in many private collections around the U.S.

Jill Hurwitz has been throwing pots since 1973 and teaching ceramics since 1994. While earning her B.A. from Skidmore College in New York, she spent all her spare time in the pottery studio. Jill has a Master’s Degree in Teaching from the School for International Training in Vermont. After college, Jill studied pottery in Vermont, at Lill Street Studios in Chicago, at the Evanston Arts Center and the Park District in Highland Park.

abouT The insTrucTorJanet Lubetkin: Elementary music teacher Janet Lubetkin has been playing musical instruments since she was 5 years

old. After working in business and studying piano for twenty years, she returned to school and became an elementary music teacher. Wanting to strum and sing, she studied guitar and taught herself to play ukulele. She has been teaching general music and ukulele to fourth and fifth grade students at Lincoln Elementary School in Highland Park for ten years. Her students have performed at Highland Park library and other community events. Janet earned a B.A. from Oberlin College, an M.M. from Northwestern University and an M.A.T. from National-Louis University.

If you have a first through third grade boy or girl interested in playing basketball against other area players without the hassle of traveling to a different location for every game, this program is for them. Participants will learn fundamental skills through weekly practice and games. Adult volunteers coach all teams. First grade games will have youth size basketballs and eight foot basketball rims. Second grade will have youth size basketballs and 9 foot basketball rims. Third grade games will have adult size basketballs, 10 foot basketball rims, full court play and score will be kept. All games will have staff referees and timekeepers. All participants will receive a team t-shirt and commemorative basketball.

1. Teams will be established according to school (Crow Island, Greeley, Hubbard Woods, Sacred Heart, Faith Hope, North Shore Country Day and more), there will be no evaluation. When filling out your registration form please remember to insert your child/children’s school. Otherwise placement on a particular school team cannot be guaranteed. If there are more than 10 children from a school, multiple teams will be formed. If there are too few children from any one school, children will be placed on a team according to village of residence. Due to the number of children in this program requests will not be taken

2. Each team will have a one hour practice during the week. Time, assigned at a later date, will be between Monday and Friday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. There will be two weeks of practice before the first game.

3. Games will be held on Saturdays. Time, assigned at a later date, will be sometime between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

abouT The insTrucTorFrank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the Traditional Karate Program for the Winnetka

Community House in 1989. He has trained in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on local and national television programs.

Ron Stein has trained in karate since 1981. His karate experience extends to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. He has been with the Winnetka Community House Karate Program since 1994.

Tai chihoon LeeTai Chi is a low-impact martial art developed to improve circulation, tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve posture, enhance balance and induce relaxation. Often Tai Chi is studied for its health benefits but this art also has practical and calming benefits for daily life as well. Tai Chi is used by martial arts practitioners to enhance the study of the other art forms. Tai Chi class on Tuesdays covers cultivation of mind, body and spirit by performing a series of Tai Chi and Qi Gong movements and postures as a synchronized group meditation. Qi Gong is the Chinese philosophy and practice of aligning breath, physical activity and awareness for mental, spiritual and physical health. Tai Chi class on Thursdays covers principle and advance techniques of Yang style Tai Chi. Winnetka children’s hourThe Winnetka Children’s Hour, a non-profit organization, has been providing live, original theatre performances for area families since 1932. Each year, The Winnetka Children’s Hour presents an original musical comedy written by board members and performed by local children, ages 4-14. The show debuts the first week of February, with the 2016 performances scheduled for Thursday, February 4 and Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 6, at 10:30 a.m. Now beginning its 84th year, Winnetka Children’s Hour has a legacy of involving local children in performances and providing a non-competitive, “low-key” and fun atmosphere for them. Families also actively participate in every aspect of the production. Proceeds from ticket sales support the Winnetka Children’s Hour Outreach program, which funds enrichment for school children who do not get many opportunities to see live theatre and creative programming. In addition, cast members each year travel to Learn Charter School in Chicago, where they teach dances from the show and other theatrical techniques. It’s a wonderful opportunity for all of the children to bond through the arts. cancellation of classesPrior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. Winnetka Community House continually strives to reduce such risks, and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participants’ safety.
