NEXT: A New Vertex of LearningA Steelcase Student Design Competition

In order to create the next classroom, we must first remember how the traditional room was designed. Desk in straight line, students sitting one by one behind each other, teacher “trapped” in the front of the class, and little to no mobility of desk movement. In order to create this new learning space, the focus was to use different angles as an inspiration. All angles have a common vertex, just as the classroom is the common vertex for students. However, all angles can point in many directions, and the same goes for the learning styles of students. Having different areas for diverse learning styles can allow for a successful active learning environment. The design space will allow students to engage in learning and feel comfortable doing so. The educator will also have easy access to students who may need extra help in private

settings throughout the university.

The Next University Space will encompass 5 key words:

Collaboration Group ideas- promote peer to peer

learningBlended Learning Environment

Space must adjust to students different learning styles

Faculty Connection Hub

The learning classroom supports public together and public alone spaces and accomodates an active and blended learning environment, The classroom also allows for private one on one working sessions to take place.

The Faculty Connection Hub allows for educators to work in a private (focus work) or group setting. There are two options for educator collaboration to happen, and a space for educators to meet with students inside the space as well.

The project spaces within the atrium, has a beam infill for a more private space when in use. The walls can be used as a white board to make visual notes, while the post and beams double as a magnetic field to hang projects for review.

The Student Work Cafe has two project spaces and two peer to peer learning spaces. The space has lounge seating aroung the the open atrium to work on homework during in between time for students and cafe bar that seats 10 people and serves healthy snacks and coffee.

The large classroom seats 120 and has 12 public tables and 36 individual node chairs. The large classroom can change into a different layout to assist in a lecture type learning. The two active learning class rooms can also change to support the different learning. Active learning classroom 1 allows the class to break into 6 different groups of 5-4 students with each group having their own freeflow whiteboard. The Active learning classroom 2 supports a lecture based class, however can also aid peer to peer collaboration and peer to educator work. The three classrooms in the back support public together and public alone.
