The Burlingame Beautification Commission has selected Crosby-N. Gray as the winner of the 2014 Business Landscape Award

Anyone wishing to nominate a local business for this Award for the coming year is encouraged to contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 650-558-7330. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2015.

Since 1928, the stately colonial mansion of Crosby-N. Gray has graced and dignified the southern entrance to our City. Under family management for over four generations Crosby-N. Gray has continually demonstrated a commitment to excellence in landscaping that both compliments and enhances the surround-ing neighborhood. The variety of well-maintained plantings are inviting, visually appealing, provide seasonal color within peren-nial borders and their symmetry is in perfect proportion to the dignified and understated grandeur of the Crosby-N. Gray façade.Given their historic commitment, this harmonious streetscape will undoubtedly continue to be a model for downtown Burlin-game businesses. The award will be presented at the Burlingame City Council meeting on September 15, 2014. The winning business will re-ceive an award plaque and an original watercolor created by local artist, Dale Perkins, of the landscaping of the business.

Message from Margaret...

Karen started working for the City in July of 1982 as a Temp Secretary at Franklin School. The following summers and holidays, she worked Summer Camps and the Rec offi ce. She later become a Senior Rec Leader (1988) and a Pre-school teacher (1992). Karen obtained her teaching credential and taught 6 years within BSD. In 2000, she became a Recreation Supervisor and has since been involved with a variety of programs and projects throughout the department. Karen is just as active in her personal life, enjoying time with her two daughters and husband.

Director of the Parks and Recreation Department

We hope you enjoyed your summer with Burlingame Parks and Rec. But don’t worry, the fun is still happening. This fall we are introducing new and exciting programs as well as continuing our popular programs. A couple of the new programs include a variety of fi tness options, new private singing and

ukulele lessons, and, back by popular demand, Raising Backyard Chickens!

For those teens who are interested in community service, the Youth Advisory Committee is accepting applications until September 12th. The YAC seeks dedicated, enthusiastic, motivated teens to help plan events, gain leadership skills, and make a difference in the Burlingame Community. If this is something you are interested in joining or learning more about, please contact

Kari Guastella at [email protected].

Also, the Burlingame Park and Recreation Foundation will be hosting a team Bocce and Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday October 18th. For information, visit

http://www.supportburlingameparks.org/bocce---horseshoe-tournament.html

As always, if you have a suggestion for a program or class, please contact us. We are continually looking for new options to add to our programming.

Have a great fall and remember, “Don’t Hesitate, Recreate!”

Active Adults Trips

Treasure Island (age 18+) with Gary Holloway Man-made Treasure Island is one of many jewels in San Francisco Bay. Created in the 1930's for the world's fair known as the Golden Gate International Exposition, it was visited by over ten million people in 1939 and 1940. Following this fair, the island was to become San Francisco International Airport, but, with the advent of WW II, it became a U. S. Navy base, a roll it fi lled until the mid-1990's, when the Navy left and the island was transferred to the City of San Francisco. On this tour of Treasure Island, we will visit the classic Administration Building and view the historic exhibits there and see one of the largest murals in the world. Then, we will look at the two huge hangars which were used to house the famous Pan American World Airways seaplanes. Following this, we will have lunch (PROVIDED) on the island at the Culinary Academy, sponsored by the U. S. Job Corps, and meet dozens of young people training to enter the food and hospitality industry. After lunch, we will drive around the island to view the many areas used by the Navy, and see the public housing area and elementary school at the north end of the island. We will have million-dollar views of both sides of the Bay as we drive around. 21066.01 Th 9:00am-5:00pm 9/25 1 Trip Fee: $74R/$87NR

From here, we will head to the historic port area for an Italian lunch at Angelinas (PROVIDED). Following lunch, we head north to Pershing Park and visit the City's fi nest art and history museum, the Haggin. And, we will complete our tour of the day with a visit to the University of the Pacifi c Campus, and learn of its history. Petaluma (age 18+) with Gary Holloway On this trip we head to the North Bay and to one of California's oldest cities: Petaluma. Named in the Miwok language for the low hills which frame the western and southern edges of the city, Petaluma has long been known as the "Egg Basket of The World", due to the presence of hundreds of chicken ranches and hatcheries there over many decades. From this early role, the City has evolved into a very attractive residential community, with over 50,000 people. On this day tour we will explore the historic downtown area, adjacent to the Petaluma River, and drive through one of the fi nest residential neighborhoods in Northern California, fi nding four homes designed by famed architect Julia Morgan, and many grand mansions, from Victorian to Spanish Revival designs. Driver Safety Program (age 50+) with Patrick ClohertyDeveloped by the American Association of Retired Persons (A.A.R.P.), Driver Safety Program is the first comprehensive driver retraining course geared to the specific needs of older motorists. The course material covers the effects of aging and medications on driving, basic driving rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards, adverse road conditions, energy saving, and accident prevention measures.Research shows that older drivers are involved in no more accidents than their middle-age counterparts when the record is based on actual miles driven. However, research also indicates that older persons can improve their driving abilities through additional training, attention, and practice, enabling them to maintain their driving licenses longer while driving safer. California enacted legislation in 1987 requiring all automobile insurance companies to provide a discount to graduates of state-approved driver improvement courses. A.A.R.P.'s Driver Safety Program is an approved course. Location: Recreation Center 2 classes21411.01 Tu/Wed 8:30 am - 12:30 pm 1/6/15-1/7/15 Fee: $15 AARP Member / $20 Non-AARP member
