This year’s fundraising dinner takes place on Saturday, October 19 at the St Albert Community Hall and will celebrate the Bruin Inn, an iconic landmark from St Albert’s past about which our community remains passionate. Built in 1929 on the site of the old St Albert Hotel, the Bruin Inn quickly became the center of St Albert’s social scene. During the 1940’s and 50’s, the size of St Albert could double on a Saturday night as the Bruin Inn was the only bar in the region where men and women could drink together. Another highlight many St Albert residents remember was in 1984, when Edmonton Oiler Mark Messier brought the Stanley Cup to the Bruin Inn. When the hotel came under threat of demolition, local residents and historians fought a hard battle to save the landmark, but after years of mixed financial success and general decay, the Bruin Inn was torn down in 2000. The 3rd annual Heritage Dinner will celebrate the history of the iconic landmark and raise funds for Musée Héritage Museum restoration projects. Nancy Randall-Burger, Volunteer

Nancy Randall-Burger | Volunteer

Nancy has been volunteering with Arts and Heritage for about 5 years now. She first heard about volunteer opportunities with Arts and Heritage when she saw an ad in the St Albert Gazette requesting volunteers for an upcoming event. Nancy’s initial volunteer experience with AHF was helping out with our annual art gallery fundraiser, where she acted as a runner for art after the bidding took place, as a wrapper, and as an information resource for the art and bidding process. Nancy has volunteered at many of our annual fundraising events and says that, “the fundraising parties are so enjoyable, and it is great to meet artists in attendance as well!”. Nancy has also staffed the reception desk at Art Gallery of St Albert, sold memberships, enrolled participants for the art classes and children’s birthday parties, added tags to new gift shop items, and made many, many colourful worry doll yarn kits!

Nancy says her favourite task is helping out at exhibition opening receptions and guiding guests through the exhibitions. “I always learn so much more about the appreciation of art, and it is so much fun to share responses and reflections with the viewing public. I always learn something interesting or see things with new eyes … and I love colour!!”. In her spare time, Nancy enjoys gardening, canoeing and hiking; walking her cat, Bebe; choral singing and creating glass art; as well as playing with her two grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin.

Lexi Pendzich, Visitor Services & Gallery Shop Coordinator, says that, “Nancy loves art and is a passionate contributor to her community. As a volunteer with Art Gallery of St Albert, Nancy shares her enthusiasm, friendliness and knowledge with staff and visitors. We thank her for her continued support and vibrant personality!”.
