At 5:40 p.m. on

Saturday, August

31, Alicia Hillary

Blackington passed

away peacefully

with her husband,

Andy, by her side.

She would have

been 48 on Octo-

ber 1.

In life she was an advocate for the Pom-

pe community and a pioneer at the

forefront of the struggle against this

rare disease. Her good works continue

after her through organ donations and

the Alicia Blackington Scholarship fund

to benefit another Pompe sufferer.

She was a bright spirit and will be

missed by all who knew her. She is

survived by her parents, Laurie and

Richard Blackington, and her husband

Andy Wagle.

News From Around the Globe

Dear Globe Guilders, On behalf of everyone here at the Globe, we are so pleased to thank you for hard work throughout the year. Michael had a wonderful time celebrating with you at Awards Night, and we all know that your $120,000 gift presented to the Globe that night was earned through many hours of your time and efforts, for which we are grateful. This has been a superb year for the Globe as we welcomed Barry in January and are now in the midst of his first full season as Artistic Director. We hope to see many of you in the months to come as we welcome the Grinch back for the 16th year, and start 2014 with The Winter’s Tale, Barry’s Old Globe directorial debut. Take care, and best wishes from the Globe! Sincerely yours, Barry Edelstein Michael G. Murphy Artistic Director Managing Director

CELEBRATING COUTURE 2014

Vivid theatricality takes the runway on May 9, 2014 when splendid couture designs of Naeem Khan are showcased for the benefit of The Old Globe. Theatre of fashion mixes with theatre of the stage.

The brilliant designer Khan returns to San Diego for the annual Globe Guilders Fashion Show in the spring. On that occasion, the much loved couture fashion leader will present his newest collection and, be as-sured, it will be dazzling. Dazzling in the most elegant manner. Timeless, but never boring. His en-during artistry is revered by trend-setters like Michelle Obama, Queen Noor of Jordan, and Beyoncé. San Diego fashion icons Valerie Cooper, Jo Ann Kilty, Karen Cohn, and Sheryl White are also avid fans of Khan, appearing frequently in his meticulously crafted garments. Khan's clothes are works of art. Turn them inside out and examine fine craftsmanship. Handiwork on the surface of the clothing is equally astonishing. It can't be said often enough that his couture dresses and gowns are worthy of museum inclu-sion. Beading and embroidery are dramatic and lavish, yet the lines of the garments are classic. These clothes are forever. Forever suggests perfection. Khan's collections are never less than that. His elaborate use of lace and em-broidered floral motifs and spectac-

ular crystal beading become won-derful modes of expression for cherished "once in a lifetime" expe-riences. Again, a forever dress for life changing moments. Following tradition, a patron party in a lovely home is being planned. Those patrons who support the event at higher levels will be invit-ed to the party, where it's fun to see Khan's gorgeous garments up close and to mingle with other fashionis-tas. Stay tuned. The Globe Guilders team putting the fashion show together is first class, as always, and is led by Chair Lois Lewis and Co-Chairs Dolores Smith and Patricia Paul, all very well organized. Most of the Cele-brating Couture Committee, moti-vated and disciplined, knows this

event well and is ready to spring into action on May 9. Newcomers will follow, and the fashion event will, be gloriously successful. Sandy Redman, a member of The Old Globe's Board of Directors, will serve as Honorary Chair and Harry and Valerie Cooper, a past Honor-ary Chair, will head the Honorary Committee. Neiman Marcus will again be responsible for the runway presentation. It couldn't be in better hands. Early reservations are recommend-ed because Celebrating Couture, now in its 24th edition, is really pop-ular. Barbara Bolt is in charge of res-ervations. The venue is the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, where guests will visit, dine, and revel in the beautiful clothes of Naeem Khan.

Meet and Greets/Company Calls are

an integral part of The Old Globe

scene. This is the occasion where

cast and crew meet together for the

first time to begin work on a play.

Guilders have been preparing a

plentiful array of goodies for them

since 1955. (We are famous for our

Deviled Eggs and Taco Salad!) It is a

wonderful way to enjoy the camara-

derie of the Guilders and become

acquainted on a more personal level

with cast and staff members for each

play. Doesn’t it look like fun? Sign

up for the next one and have a great

time! Contact Chairs Jane Klofkorn,
