Bringing Words to Life Through PoetrySpeaking in front of people is hard to do. Most writers focus completely on the writ-ten word, few give any thought to how the poem should be read aloud. Preparing to read a piece aloud requires a skill set much like that of an actor or singer. Through guided practice and critique, this workshop will teach you how to prepare a work for reading and to use the basic tools of voice and body to effectively pull the words off the page and bring them to life.

Do you like Anime? In this workshop, we will explore the visual imagery of anime and use it to introduce Japanese poetic forms, including haiku and haibun. Using the dream-like animated narratives of gifted directors like Hayao Miyazaki, we will do exercises to explore the ways that haibun can allow us to create poems from stories, dreams, and even the products of popular culture. Bring your imagination and your favorite pen or pencil.

Fencing - Intermediate This intermediate-level class is intended for children 8-13 who have completed the beginning program, or who have been recommended by a coach. This program is designed to prepare young fencers for the demands of competition through a series of tactical exercises, organized bouting, and short lessons to promote technical profi-ciency and physical development. More em-phasis will be placed on each athlete fenc-ing a particular weapon, as opposed to the a la carte approach of the youth program. The skills necessary to complete this program are more specific and detailed than those in the previous program, thus class completion, typically, takes approximately a year.

Age RequirementsTo ensure a successful program experience for your child, program age requirements are established by the instructors and the recreation program coordinators. Appropriate age requirements are determined for each program based on developmental guidelines and staff experience working with the children in each of the program areas.
