Sailing with Father Serra:New Perspecves onCalifornia Mission History
Few people realize that Father Serras rst sight ofMonterey was from the deck of a Spanish Naval
vessel. In four sessions, well explore Montereys
early history through the eyes of 18th century
explorers, sailors, arsts and missionaries. Originally
shrouded in secrecy by Spanish authories, the
accomplishments of the Spanish Royal Navy during
the late 18th century on the coasts of California and
Alaska have oen been overlooked by historians.
Recent research highlights the signicance of Spanish
mariners in establishing the California Missions and
narrowly saving them from an early exncon.Topics related to the marime history of Monterey
Bay during Father Serras era will be discussed.
Anyone with an interest in the California Missions or
in the Age of Sail will enjoy this series.

Alan Kemp served as the Research Librarian at the MontereyMarime Museum aer rering from a career in engineering.
Hes an avid sailor, arst and historian, with an interest in 18th
century marime history. Alexs in-depth study of the marime

Margot Grych graduated from UC Davis in 1985 with an
individual major in Horcultural Journalism. For over 30 years
she has worked in countless gardens, given consultaons
and connued learning about plants. A proponent o

landscaping. Margot currently teaches at Monterey Peninsula
College and works as a garden teacher for Carmel Unied
School District.

Exploring A Course in MiraclesOLLI@CSUMB members have requested this all-new

an adventurer, wring about your experiences and

Dance HistoryFrom its Beginnings to TodayDance is a fundamental form of human expression,
common to all cultures. This course will explore
dance history from the birth of ballet to the
contemporary art. We will survey the innovaons of
each period of dance history and look at the polical,
social and culture inuences that have impacted the
developmental stages of this extraordinary art form.
Each class will include lectures, video samples, anddiscussions. If we understand the history of dance,
well be able to have a greater appreciaon of dance
today. The class will include an oponal eld trip
to see a live performance followed by a dinner
discussion that will relate the classroom lectures to
the live performance experience.

Giverny, France! Learn about the historic design, its
development, as well as Monets color theories and
his use of light and living color. How did the gardens
inuence his painng? Elizabeth Murray will shareher lush photographs of the present-day Giverny
gardens, pictures that shes taken over the past 25
years. Elizabeth will discuss the historical garden,
the garden today, and ideas to bring home with
Giverny-based garden plans that can be executed

Photographic PorolioThis course is designed for the photographer whois interested in working in a group to learn how to
develop a porolio with a specic theme or goal in

Alicia Morena-di Palma is a dance ethnologist, author
illustrator, choreographer, performer and teacher. She has

performing improv. Following a career as an administrator of
a youth and family-counseling agency, he followed his interest
in theater and improvisaon. Gerry is the founder of Women
of Whimsy and O the Cu Laughter Links in Monterey. He
directs the Tahoe Improv Players, a company he founded in the
1980s.

Stepping into Regional HistoryII: Landmarks of Mexican EraMontereyExplore our regions Mexican/Californio period
(1822-1846) while vising a dierent architectural
landmark each session. Well look at the rise of the
rancho era as a direct eect on the secularizaon
of the missions. Well begin with a walking tour
of surviving Mexican-era buildings in downtown
Monterey, including visits to both Custom House
and Casa Serrano. Subsequent sessions will include
the Cooper-Molera complex, Casa Castro/La
Mirada, Casa Boronda in Salinas, and Mission San
Juan Bausta along with the adjacent Castro-Breen
Adobe.

Californians have enacted three major electoral and
governance changes that deserve our aenon
During this course, well give them an in-depth
review.
Redistricng: The newly drawn Assembly, Senate,
House of Representaves, and Board of Equalizaon
districts have resulted in creave disrupon in many
areas of the state. For the rst me in Californias
history, these new districts were drawn by a Cizens
Independent Redistricng Commission. How many
House of Representaves members will be looking
for work? Who is likely to take their places, and
what will this mean for California?
Open Primary: The voter-approved Top Two Primary
elecon system has been tested in a special eleconin Los Angeles, and is the subject of widespread
polical strategizing everywhere. What changes
will this make in the composion of the legislature
following the 2012 elecons?
Majority Vote Budget: While California connues
to struggle to chip away at the structural decit,
the newly voter-enacted majority vote provision to
adopt the annual state budget is making an impact
Whats the impact and how will it play out going
forward?

Fred Keeley, Santa Cruz County Treasurer, is a former membe
of the California State Assembly. He is a member of the
Leadership Council of California Forward, which assisted in
the wring and passage of the three voter-approved iniave
that are the subject of this course oering.
Winter Wildlife ofJacks Peak ParkMigrant bird species that raise their annual broods
of nestlings well north of California winter here in
our Golden State, adding a note of special interest
to the local wildlife. Jacks Peak, above the city of
Monterey, is a prime locaon to search for these
winter visitors among the pine forest of the peaksslope. Our eld course will take us along well-
maintained forest trails on the crest to seek-out
nches, woodpeckers, thrusters, raptors, warblers,
band-tailed pigeons and perhaps even rare crossbills.

Wines of Monterey CountyWine grapes were rst introduced to the Monterey area
over 200 years ago by the Franciscan Friars. Today, over
85 vintners and growers call Monterey County home. The
countys climatemid-day heat tempered by morning and
late-aernoon fogis perfect for developing world-class
vintages year aer year.
In this special 3-hour event, parcipants will receive an
overview of Monterey County wine, including insight into
specic varietals, instrucon on how to read a label, and
ps for pairing wine with food. Aendees will also taste a variety of the countys best wines with special
aenon given to the role stemware plays in the avor and enjoyment of wine. A presentaon by Riedel
Crystal of America will allow parcipants to experience rst-hand the dierence high-quality glassware can
make.
