my house,” says Mike Weiss assuredly. he knows a lot about fires. When Mike retired as Lieutenant at the Flint, Michigan Fire department in 2000, he had served with his squad for 23 years.

Mike and Grace Weiss moved out to their 10-acre plot in otisville, 35 minutes from Flint, in 1997. the property was just what they were looking for. a little acreage with an attractive, 4-story house with a fireplace and a big pole barn to store his hobby cars. it was in early april of this year when Grace had come upstairs to wake Mike after seeing something strange on the patio. She had been letting the cats out when she saw a thin grey square of carbon fall like a leaf to the lawn. the couple had enjoyed a fire in the fireplace earlier and the cedar trim surrounding the fluke exhaust caught fire. as the fire moved toward the roof, it was starved for oxygen by the seamless steel surround. While the siding didn’t entirely choke out the fire, it delayed the spread of the fire long enough that the fire department was able to easily extinguish it when they arrived.

autumn leaVes are Blowing and for many this is harvest season. this is the time to look at the seeds that you’ve sewn and nurtured, to call upon your team to gather and process your healthy crop. in the coming weeks there is a lot of work to be done to bring the bounty of the harvest to tables across america. even during these busy times, it can be easier than you think to prepare your home for energy-conservation through the winter.

as a homeowner, heating and cooling bills are a big cost of owning your home. Checking the attic for roof leaks, covering windows with plastic, installing storm windows, caulking around outlets and sealing ductwork are standard procedures for winterizing your house; take a look at our list to make sure you haven’t missed anything. You may be surprised to know that 52% of a typical home heating bill through the winter months is attributable to air loss through your windows, doors and walls. Leaky homes are also less comfortable; they have cold drafts in the winter, and there is more likelihood of moist air condensing within your home walls resulting in mold growth. Sealing these gaps before temperatures plummet minimizes the money you’ll throw out the window during the winter.

Winterizing checklist: Look for stains on the siding, which could be a sign of a water problem or a roof issue

Check gutters and downspouts for debris or improper pitch, especially during a rain storm. Look for stains on the soffit, which could be a sign of a leak

examine the foundation for cracks and bulges

Make sure the grade of the ground around the foundation slopes away from the house

examine weather-stripping around exterior doors and windows for tears and wear

Look around the attic space during daylight hours, with the lights turned off. Look for holes in the roofing that let in light

drain and winterize outdoor faucets and irrigation systems

Clean or replace dirty furnace filters

test smoke and Co monitors, inspect (or install) fire extinguishers, review fire escape plans, and rid your home of old newspapers and other fire hazards

Look for signs of insect or bird nests in soffits, eaves, or attic vents. if you see signs of animal waste in a certain area, look around for the possible nest or culprit

when our saViour’s lutheran Church in dazey, north dakota wanted to revitalize the building for their 125th anniversary in September of 2009, the board of trustees requested bids from 3 companies. “the roof was in great need of repair. a large evergreen had fallen on it during a wind storm back in 2007,” said philip Quick, our saviour’s treasurer.

dazey, north dakota was established in 1883 by a group of hard-working scandinavian settlers, mostly from norway who farmed grains in the rich, fertile soil of barnes County. today, the community is home to around 100 people, primarily farmers and their families raising grains, beans and corn. our saviour’s congregation first organized in 1884 and the church that stands today was built in 1902. in the 107 years since it

was built, the church’s wood siding had been re-painted numerous times. the narthex addition at the entrance had 2 windows that needed replacement as well.
