I am so proud of everyone. This quarter was the first quarter in a long time where all active members were Neos. I think we pulled it off. We encourage feedback from alumni because it’s very helpful. I’m happy we didn’t let small bumps in the road become our roadblocks. I am also excited to see how the next few quarters will go because I know it will only get better.

Recruitment

Fall 2008

We have had a pretty successful recruiting quarter thus far. We are about to enter first round interviews with nine interests who have been working on a mock organization. They will present this to us on Sunday, October 26th. We’re eager to learn more about these women. We recently hosted a pumpkin carving session with them. This coming week they will be compiling their application packets for us, as well as completing the five principles as a group. As our interests prepare for the journey ahead of them we will begin to prepare our chapter and ourselves for them.

This quarter we have done two fundraisers: Taco Friday and the Specialty Bookstore fundraiser. For the fundraiser with Specialty we handed out coupons for students to use during book rush. The sorority with the most coupons turned in wins a cash prize. The winner will be announced at the end of the quarter. Taco Friday took place October 10th at Georgia’s. Everyone cooked and watched movies. Laney and Georgia delivered the tacos. A profit was made, but everyone decided to hold the next Taco fundraiser on Court Street in front of the courthouse.

District Retreat

This year Central Region Retreat was held at Ohio University September 19-21 and was a huge success. We had sisters and colony members come in from many different states and we had a blast. On Friday we were able to get to know each other a little better while we waited for all of the girls to arrive. Our business meeting was on Saturday and we spent most of the day talking about how we can make Sigma Lambda Gamma and our region better. That night, we celebrated the end of a long day with a party hosted by our chapter. We were able to relax and have a little fun. Sunday morning the girls headed back home. This opportunity was such a great bonding experience that we wouldn’t have changed for the world.

Fall 2008

District Retreat Community ServiceThis quarter’s community service started off with Principle Day on September 15th. We decided to do voter registration. Only a few people registered but it was a small success since this is such an important election. Our other community service event was the 5K Run to Empower. This organization strives to educate Africa’s orphans and vulnerable children. Brandy and Matt also participated in this wonderful event along with some of the other sisters. It was one of the biggest 5K events OU has had in a long time. On October 25th, we will be volunteering at the Athens County Pumpkin FestiFall at the Dairy Barn. This is a huge fall family event where they are expecting about 300 children. We will be in charge of the arts and crafts, as well as outside games for children. It should be a fun event!

Programming

To bring Hispanic Heritage Month to a close Zeta Gamma brought motivational speaker, Tio Louie to OU. He showed his confessional documentary, Latina Confessions. The documentary addresses what it means to be Latina in the U.S and touched on some aspects of the Madonna whore complex as well. To finish off the evening we took Tio Louie to Casa Lopez for dinner. Although attendance could have been more successful, we pulled off our first program of the year!
