Yann Arthus-Bertrand,born 1946 in France, hasbecome globally fa-mous as a nature pho-tographer. During hiscareer he discoveredthe beauty of the worldas seen from abovewhen he became a hotair balloon pilot and be-gan experimenting withaerial photography. It was in the late 70s, inKenya, while studyingwith his wife Anne theevery day life of a prideof lions that, that hetruly became a photog-rapher. He understoodthat he had to tell thefacts through imagesrather than words. He

also discovered the beauty of the world seen fromabove when he became a hot air balloon pilotand began experimenting aerial photography.Upon his return to France, he published in 1981his first book Lions, first release of a series of 80books. He also began a career as a reporter-photographer and closely worked with variousnaturalists including Dian Fossey and her mountaingorillas in Rwanda. His work was published in manyinternationally known magazines such as ParisMatch, Geo, Life or National Geographic. In 1991, he created ALTITUDE, the first photoagency specialized in aerial photography. In the 90s, under the patronage of UNESCO, heembarked upon his most ambitious project:creating an image bank of the earth seen fromabove. Yannís aim was to create a record of theworldís environment for present and futuregenerations. In 1999, his work was published andThe Earth from Above, translated in 24 languages, became one of the best selling illustrated books

with more than three million copies sold world-wide. The Earth from Above is also an open-air freeaccess exhibition that travels in more than 100cities around the world and has attracted to thisdate over 100 million visitors. But it is still a work inprogress. Many countries remain to be visited, andgeographical coordinates of every shot will allowother photographers and scientists to locate anddocument the evolution of these sites. At the same time, Yann Arthus-Bertrand carrieson with the systematic inventory of house pets anddomestic breeds, photographing the animals inthe studio or outdoors against a canvas backdrop. In 2003 he launched "Six Billion Others." Camera-men travel the world to meet and interviewpeople as a mean to portray the planet under ahumanistic angle. To date more than 4.000interviews have been filmed in more than 65countries.In 2005 Yann Arthus-Bertrand created Good-Planet, a non-profit organization which isdedicated to the promotion of sustainabledevelopment, his leitmotiv, through all his differentprojects. Yann would like to enable each andevery one of us to become a custodian of ourplanetís future and consequently of our ownfuture. He also directed a series of four, two hourdocumentaries entitled Earth From Above, whichwas shown on French television in 2006-2007, andstarted this year the production of a feature lengthfilm on the state of the global environment andthe challenges we are facing.

Yann ARthus-Bertrand“With Earth from above,

I simply want people to see the Earth as it is today,as faithfully as possible. What motivates me is the impact

a photograph can make within the framework of environmentalpreservation. The great novelty of our time is that mankind has the power to

change its environment and I want my photos to testify to this fact so people can realise this.”~~Yann Arthus-Bertrand
