NOVEMBER/ STEWARDSHIP During the month of November, our emphasis at Faith has always been to review what it means to be "good stewards". As Christians, we accept that the time, talents, and treasures we have in this material world are gifts from God. In sermons, and other instructions, we will be reminded that, as stewards, we should manage the use of these gifts, and that some proportion should be returned to further God's kingdom.
Lyle's Lines With the beginning of November my thoughts seem to automatically move toward “thanksgiving.” One big reason for that is because of Thanksgiving Day which occurs later this month, a national day set aside to give thanks to God for all that He has provided and done for us! And so I start thinking already about the many blessings for which I’m thankful. A second reason I think of “thanksgiving” in November is because the harvest has generally concluded by now. I’m not a farmer, nor did I grow up on a farm, but I have had a special appreciation for crops and produce since I was a little boy. A big part of that I’m sure is because my father was an avid gardener and I participated with him in all phases of the garden. My love and appreciation for growing food did not stop as I grew up, but only seemed to grow (pun intended) as the years went by. My appreciation and understanding of growing crops and food multiplied even more when I married Debbie, a “farmer’s daughter”. So now, as the growing season comes to a conclusion for another year, I give thanks to God for all of the food I’ve grown, eaten, shared, and enjoyed, plus all of the produce that has provided jobs and food for others in our area! What a blessing from our God! But a few days ago while I was doing my daily devotion (which currently is from the book of Psalms) I came across one of the many lines from the Scriptures where we are reminded to “give thanks.” This particular translation was the exact wording that my family has used for multiple generations now after meals. When the meal is over and the conversation has reached a good stopping point, we join together in saying, “Oh give thanks unto to the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever.” In this very simple, brief prayer we are given two more reasons to give thanks to God this November (and every month of the year). The first reason – because “God is good”. The significance of those three words is immense. No matter what is happening in my life or in the world I can be assured that God is good. Everything that He does is good. Everything He wants is good. Everything He wants me to do is good. God is good – all the time! But the last phrase from that prayer (His mercy endures forever) is even more important and uplifting. No matter what I’ve done, said, or thought – God’s mercy is still there for me. God’s love for me is unconditional and everlasting! Nothing will ever change God’s love for you! Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever! Amen!
Sunday Adult Bible Classes DURING EDUCATION HOUR FROM 9:45 -‐ 10:40 A.M.
Continuing to meet on November 1 & 8 Missouri Synod Lutherans: Who Are We & Why Are We That Way – Norm Zurell is leading this class in Room 204 that considers these questions. Maybe you’ve had these questions for years, but have been unwilling or afraid to ask them. This is your opportunity. Additional questions may be submitted (anonymously if desired) to Norm in advance. Questions like, “Why don’t we have pastors of other denominations preach here?” or “Why don’t we have women pastors?” or “Why is it ‘wrong’ for our pastors to participate in events like a 9/11 Memorial?” are being considered. If you have a question that you wish to have discussed, you may bring it into the church office with “Norm Zurell” noted on the envelope. Joshua: Be Strong and Courageous – This class is led by Lyle Heggemeier in the Auditorium and is studying the Biblical man, Joshua (from the time period of the Exodus in the Old Testament). But more importantly, it points to comparable people of America and their similarities with Joshua and the lessons we can learn from them. These people include Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and George Washington. What mistakes did they (and Joshua) make and what can we learn from them as we walk through our difficulties and struggles? On Sunday, November 15 Jesus Parable of the Great Supper -‐ Pastor Hering will lead this class on the parable from Luke 14 where Jesus gives warning to His followers (including us) to set and keep our priorities straight. This class will meet in the Auditorium. Beginning November 22 Joseph: Carpenter of Steel – This class is a perfect way to prepare your heart and soul in the Advent season as we study this man who was so important in the life of our Savior. Joseph played a critical role, but was willing to be in the background. What can we learn from him? This faithful man has much to teach us about faith and service! Lyle Heggemeier will be leading this class which will meet throughout the Advent season.
Stewardship Theme – The tradition here has been to focus on stewardship (giving of money AND use of our time and talents) during the month of November. We will do this once again this year. The theme for this year (in keeping with Lyle’s Lines) is “Oh give thanks unto the Lord”. You will be receiving a mailing to your home about this as well as hearing about it during worship in coming weeks. There will be a couple of surprises for you, so you’ll want to be sure to be here every Sunday.

Germany Tour – There are still spots available in the Germany tour. For complete information about where we’ll go and what we’ll see look for “packets” at the Information Counter in the Church Concourse. This tour will be in September 2016 and will have us seeing many of the important places in Martin Luther’s life just one year prior to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The current cost for the tour is $1821, which includes all lodging, ground transportation, and many of the meals. (Flights are additional and will be about $1,000.) Music Ministry
It is Well with My Soul On November 1 (All Saints Sunday), our Senior Choir will sing an arrangement of “It is Well with My Soul”. This hymn was written by a Chicago Presbyterian layman, Horatio Spafford. Spafford was a lawyer who lived during the early to mid 1800’s. He lived a very tragic story. He lost most of his worldly investments in the Chicago Fire of 1871. Shortly before that his son had died. So in 1873, he decided to have a family vacation in Europe. He sent his wife and 4 daughters on ahead of him. Their ship was struck by an English vessel and sank in 12 minutes. Only his wife survived. During the sad voyage to go meet his wife, he composed the text to this song. “When sorrows like sea-‐billows roll…” is a phrase from the first verse that so poignantly describes his personal grief. Yet, even in this grief he is able to focus himself on Christ’s redeeming work and to anticipate His glorious second coming. He is amazingly still able to say in this text, “It is well with my soul.” On All Saints Sunday, we are reminded of God’s promise of eternal life. To me, November is a month for giving thanks… giving thanks for our country, our families, our friends, and all the people who touch our lives. And for some of us, many of those people are no longer here on this earth. God promises a time and place where there will be no more death and no more pain. May you feel God’s peace and know that it is indeed well with our souls. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea-‐billows roll -‐ Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. Refrain: It is well with my soul. Tho Satan should buffet, tho trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Sunday Night FLY – “Cookies for College Students!” – Nov. 8 Every semester, FLY mails care packages to FLY alumni around the country! We pack tons of cookies, encouragement notes, and toys into each box. Jr. & Sr. FLY youth are invited to bring two dozen homemade cookies to Sunday Night FLY on Nov. 8. We’ll write letters, pack cookies, and play massive games of Sardines! Sunday Night FLY REMIX -‐ Nov. 22 Youth will choose the night’s lesson and game! At our last SNFLY REMIX we discussed “Tough Questions.” What will you and your friends pick this time?! *About Sunday Night FLY Youth in grades 7-‐12 meet on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month from 7-‐8:45pm in the FLY Room! We worship together, read God’s Word, talk in small groups, play large group games, eat lots of food, and more! The FLY Café is open from 6:30-‐9 where youth can buy candy, soda, t-‐shirts, and other FLY merch. (Popcorn is always FREE!) The Xbox, air hockey, and foosball games can be played before and after Sunday Night FLY. Friends are always welcome!
Sunday Morning Sr. FLY Class: Beginning Nov. 8, the Sr. FLY class will spend two weeks creating a 45 minute Sunday school lesson for all of the younger children at Faith! Then on Nov. 22, our teens will lead the lesson in the Youth Room. It might incorporate skits, videos, songs, puppets, and more! We thank God for our teen leaders at Faith! Jr. FLY Confirmation Class The 7th & 8th grade confirmation class will be on Sunday mornings this month from 9:45-‐10:40am in the Community Room. Parents are required to attend, too. Check out the FLY Store! Youth attending the National Youth Gathering will be selling Faith and FLY merchandise, such as: t-‐shirts, coffee mugs, Christmas cards, sweatshirts, and more this month! To place an order (before supplies run out), please pick up an order form in the Concourse, and check out the store. More info can be found on the order form. Thanks for supporting our youth!

Jr. FLY Confirmation Class meets in the Community Room -‐ In November, Jr. FLY will be learning about the Apostle’s Creed with their parents. Sr. FLY meets in Room 201 -‐ Sr. FLY will wrap up their “Fire on the Mountain” series and will create and lead a Sunday school lesson for the younger children.
Children's and Family Ministry
Our 3rd rotation of the year (for children in 1st through 6th grade) will be about the story of David and Jonathan. Our Sunday School children will learn about
friendship, loyalty, and doing what is right (as well as the Golden Rule). Join us
as children learn through games, crafts, art projects and video clips.
Our 3+4 year old class and Kindergarteners will be studying the story of
Abraham and Sarah. They will learn about God’s promise to them as well of the fact that God keeps his
promises (even if he does it differently than we expect).

Faith Child Care NOVEMBER NEWS
Thank you for supporting us as we enter into a new season here at Faith Child Care! We are looking forward to getting ready for Thanksgiving and all the magic of the holidays and the story of Christmas! New mats are being ordered for the Auditorium and we are working with the Property Board to provide building security. Your support this summer during our Giving Campaign really made all of this possible! Thank you!

Scholastic Book Fair (November 18-‐23) There will be a delightful assortment of books for all ages of
children. Books will be available on Sunday, November 22, for your shopping convenience. Thank you for supporting Faith Child Care through your purchases!
Panera Bread Fundraiser (December 2015) Next month you will have an opportunity to support Faith Child Care through an easy, tasty dining experience. Faith Child Care will be holding a Dinner Fundraiser at Panera Bread in Penfield one special weeknight in early December. The more flyers we hand to the cashier as we purchase our meal that night, the larger the percentage Panera Bread Company will donate to us.
Winter Carnival (February 2016) In advance of our Carnival, Faith Child Care is looking for small toys or gadgets that make great "penny prizes". New or gently used are perfect. You can't have a carnival without games and you can't have games without prizes. So what better time than now to clean out those "junk" drawers, the bottom of kids' closets, the play room....and DONATE those small treasures to use as prizes at our carnival this winter! Please...NO stuffed animals unless they are brand new. There will be a box located in the Concourse or outside the Faith Child Care office for all donated items. You'll feel good about cleaning out the clutter and our children will feel good when they win a prize. Have questions? Mrs. Pat Pucci has been with Faith Child Care for 26 years, sharing her love for life and for the Lord with countless children and families! On Wednesday October 21st, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the local Child Care Council in Rochester. We are so blessed to have her as part of our team. She is a wonderful mentor, teacher and friend! We thank the Lord for giving her to our children and staff at Faith!
Memorial Reception Committee NEWS & REQUEST The good news is we have had a record low number of deaths in our congregation this year resulting in just a few memorial receptions. It is important to us that each memorial reception brings comfort and healing to the families going through a difficult time after losing a loved one. As coordinator of these receptions, I am looking to update my volunteer list. Many of our past volunteers are no longer able to help in this ministry due to aging, moving south for the winter, or change in availability. Won't you consider adding your name to my listing as one I could call on for donations of food items (usually cookies, fruit, veggies, or cheese) or your time by way of helping set up, serve punch, or clean up? I usually contact through e-‐mails with a few days notice. You may always decline if the timing isn't convenient for you. My current listing of volunteers will be in the signup book on the counter in the Concourse for the first two weeks of November. Please add your name, update your intentions of remaining on the list, or if you can no longer serve in this capacity you may remove your name. Mission Board
Thanksgiving is fast approaching. The Mission Board would like your help to fill Thanksgiving baskets for the needy. Help is needed to bring items to fill the baskets, pack the baskets, and delivering the baskets. The food must be in before the late service on Sunday, November 22. The baskets will be filled during the late service and delivered that day. Check the poster in the Concourse and sign up to help make someone's Thanksgiving brighter. Thank you for your help.
FLC's Mission Team's Fifth Trip to Schoharie! In late September, 10 members of our Mission Team traveled to Schoharie, New York to continue the much-‐needed repair and restoration work. This year, the team worked on the historic Schoharie Reformed Church refinishing pews and loft repairs (serving the community since 1721), the United Methodist Church, and building five benches for the community park. Members of the team (pictured below) included Andy Bortle, Bill & Marguerite McKee, Ed and Karen Wright, Don and Stella Reschke, Sharon Phillips, Rich Testa, and Sandie Freitag (not pictured).
Please read the letter [which follows this article] from the Schoharie Reformed Church to help understand the deep appreciation and thanks they feel for our Mission Team; especially for the fact we keep returning and have not abandoned them in their ongoing need. The flooding which destroyed so much of their community happened in August 2011 (Hurricanes Irene and Lee), and there is still so much work that needs to be done. Many people in the community feel forgotten, but our team continues to return and help in any way needed. God bless our Mission Team!
In addition to the letter included here, below is a quote from a recent news article from S.A.L.T. (Schoharie Area Long Term, Inc.) the organization in charge of the reconstruction projects.
"Recently, S.A.L.T. had the pleasure of welcoming volunteers from Faith Lutheran Church based in Rochester, NY. This dedicated group has come to Schoharie County several times before and this time stayed for five days, and worked tirelessly on projects around the county. Andy Bortle, a carpenter by trade who has been volunteering yearly with S.A.L.T. since he first came six months after Hurricane Irene, brought the Faith Mission Team and completed detailed projects in two churches. They also crafted five beautiful benches for the Schoharie Promotional Society.

September 25, 2015 Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ at Faith Lutheran Church, On behalf of the Schoharie Reformed Church family, I send you greetings with deepest gratitude! These last four years have been among the most difficult in our congregation's nearly 300 years of ministry (1721) and you have been such faithful companions through it all. It is so inspiring and important to know that we are not forgotten, that others are still thinking and praying for us, and that you care enough to keep coming back to see us through this long, difficult journey. As pastor, personally, I cannot thank you enough, but the feelings of deep gratitude are resonated throughout the congregation. The weary congregation who took a heroic role early on has now become fragmented, united in only a few things-‐-‐impatience, weariness, and a deep need to see progress. You have helped that happen this week and have been an inspiration. Your visit is uplifting not only in the physical work that you are accomplishing, but also inspiring to those in the congregation whose patience has worn thin and whose grief is still very real. Even though all the regular ministries of the congregation have continued, and even continued to expand, in their PTSD and grief, some still see the congregation as "broken" tied to the state of our building. While our congregations' role in the recovery organizations is a source of pride for many, for some even that is a source of pain as they feel we have neglected our own building. While we have continued to seek to address it, for some, this grief has only grown as time has passed. Although we initially knew the rebuilding of our region would take many years, just based on the magnitude of Irene followed by Lee in August of 2011, we still never imagined that our own building project would be full of so many complications, so many set-‐backs, and would take SO long! Just looking at the exterior of the building, one cannot know the details of those complications, and it is easy for everyone-‐-‐including community and congregation members-‐-‐to become complacent, indignant, apathetic, and judgmental. I cannot express how important and significant it is to have a group of brothers and sisters come to volunteer for a week. It is a boost of everyone's spirit that you would choose to come spend a week working on our building! Your presence reminds us we are not alone! Your presence reminds us that our efforts to serve others have not gone unnoticed, and God will continue to guide and provide and care for US too through God's people, even as we seek to be God's people in this place. The long hard road to recovery from a flood is overwhelming and extremely complicated emotionally, spiritually, not to mention physically. Those who have not gone through it rarely understand the length of such a journey, nor the depth of difficulties associated with mass trauma, thank you so much for your continued support! Churches receive none of the assistance of any of the state programs because we are a religious organization. Many within our own denomination have ignored, forgotten, or stopped caring about our plight. After the initial outpouring, much of which we channeled into community recovery as it was the highest need at the time and we could not have known the extent of our own issues, we've received very little outside assistance the last three years. We have now spent roughly 7 budget years in the last four years! That is a stretch for any small non-‐profit, let alone one composed of so many who themselves have faced financial ruin during that same time period.
Additionally, our new campaign to "get it done" will take much more than all of our current assets, and we are seeking to raise an additional $750K. Thank you again for your ongoing support and encouragement. Again, I cannot express to you how much it has meant to us and what a difference you have made! Please keep praying for us! I am guessing you too know the fragmentation I describe to some extent, and some within your own context may not have understood that call to come back to Schoharie, NY, yet you still have answered God's call and it has been just what we needed! The State of the Organ No, it is not January. And President Obama has nothing to say about this. But the State of the Organ
at Faith is significant to us as it provides a key element to our congregation’s worship. So the
following is an update on its condition.
The work that was done in 1998 has lasted and remains all in good condition. To recap, the organ
was thoroughly cleaned, revoiced and a couple of ranks of pipes were added. With the money we
raised, we addressed things that would be audible to the congregation. However, we did nothing
with the pistons or stop combination action, which were already starting to deteriorate.
English please? What are pistons and what is the stop combination action on an organ? It is the
system which allows the player to preset certain stop combinations or sounds on a button. This
button, called a piston, can then be pressed to change sounds quickly within a piece. The pistons on
our organ are part of a very antiquated capture style system – they are original to the organ built in
1970. They have been going bad for a number of years. However, they are now quite unreliable.
The player is often surprised by sound combinations that are not intended as the pistons misfire,
and some of the sounds no longer set on the pistons at all. They, quite simply, have worn out.
The solution is to replace the old capture system with a solid state digital system. As you can
imagine, this is a very expensive project. There are also some other areas on the organ which need
improvement. A fund has been started for the enhancement and refurbishment of the organ. The
Music and Worship Team has been gathering proposals for the work. To do all of it will cost around
$30K. We have currently raised just over $15K.
A freewill offering at our upcoming organ and piano concert will benefit the organ fund. We hope
you will enjoy hearing our instruments on November 20. And, as you are able, please help us as we
build this fund.
Prime Time PILGRIMS, PUMPKIN PIE & POLITICS: THE TRUE STORY OF THANKSGIVING
This is the subject of our next gathering at noon on November 2 in the Community Room. This presentation is provided by Christopher Bensch, V.P. of Collections, Strong Museum of Play. As we sit down to our turkey dinners and football games, we are actually following a mix of historic traditions that precede even the Puritans landing in New England. And, at the same time, there are some completely American and surprisingly new elements to our Thanksgivings. Learn about the lobbyists and laws, the preference for pies and the source for cranberries that go into our November holiday. So bring your table settings and enjoy this Strong Museum of Play's story.
Pow-‐Wow Many of you have offered prayers of support for the Native American ministry of Don and Suzi Grosz on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservation (South Dakota) over the past several years. They are saying "thank you" by inviting you to a Pow-‐Wow on Sunday afternoon, November 8, at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Through the poverty and despair on the reservations shine glimmers of hope which they would like to share in picture and song (with a special violin offering by Suzi). Refreshments provided (rest assured, no prairie dog, coyote, or buffalo jerky). "Toksa" (until next we meet).
VALPO Pecan Sale The Valparaiso University Guild is again selling pecan products. Happily, prices have not changed from last year. The pound packages of pecan halves are $10 and all the packages of specialty items are $9. Those include 12-‐ounce bags of Milk Chocolate Covered Pecans and Dark Chocolate Covered Pecans, 10-‐ounce packages of Chocolate Pecan Clusters, and 8-‐ounce packages of Glazed Pecans. They will be available in the Concourse before and after worship beginning in early November or by calling Chita McKinney at 482-‐3588. All profits will be used for Guild projects benefiting the students at Valparaiso University.
Operation Christmas Child Pack & Wrap Party Saturday morning, November 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Room. Please return individual boxes to the office by Sunday morning, November 15. Women's Book Discussion Group Selection The Women's Book Group has selected Queen of the Fall by Sonja Livingston for their book to be discussed in the spring. It is the Writers and Books selection for IF ALL OF ROCHESTER READ THE SAME BOOK 2016. The author will be coming to the Rochester area for various book discussions (dates will be announced-‐-‐see wab.org). The author "considers the lives of women. Exploring the legacies of those she has crossed paths with in life and in the larger culture, Livingston weaves together strands of memory with richly imagined vignettes to explore becoming a woman in late 1980s and 1990s America...She interacts with icons such as Susan B. Anthony, the Virgin Mary, and Ally McBeal to mine the terrain of her femininity, fertility, and longing. Queen of the Fall is a dazzling meditation on loss, possibility, and ultimately, what it means to be human". (Writers and Books) There is plenty of time to read this book, meet the author, and get ready for some great discussion in the spring. Prayer Shawl & Dorcas Circle OCTOBER REPORTS
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry had a good meeting on October 5. Doris Florance opened the meeting with prayer and a new member, Susan Yehl, was welcomed into the group. Carol Letky and Marie Ferner each came with a shawl they had completed. Thanks to Ruth Behnfeldt for the yarn she contributed. Sue Hutchings presented the Treasurer's Report. There will be a prayer shawl display on Sunday, November 15. During the meeting, lots of knitting, crocheting, and chatting was done. The shawls were blessed. The meeting ended with prayer by Doris Florance. If anyone would like to present a prayer shawl to someone, please contact a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She would be happy to help you select one. Also, if you enjoy knitting or crocheting but can't attended meetings, you are encouraged to make a prayer shawl at home. There are patterns and instructions in manila envelopes across from the church office. Place the completed shawl in a bag with your name and Prayer Shawl written on it and leave it in the church office. Our next meeting is Monday, November 2 at 7pm in Room 204. All are welcome. DORCAS CIRCLE The Dorcas Circle had a busy meeting in October. Sue Hutchings came with 10 hearts she finished. Ida Stiner made two dresses. Laurie Ebbecke brought in two walker bags she finished. Brigitta Lux came with one walker bag and one dress she completed. Doris Florance brought in one walker bag, one dress, and six pillows to stuff. Good work, ladies! During the meeting, favors were made for Thanksgiving. Bears, walker bags, grieving packages, and shirt savers were cut out. Pillows were stuffed. Eight walker bags, eight shirt savers, and 12 pillows were finished. Lois Jacob took the favors and some pillows to Woodside Manor. Laurie Ebbecke delivered the walker bags and other pillows to St. John's. Brigitta Lux took the grieving packages home to serge. The bears will be given to Norma Kreiss to put faces on. Doris Florance will deliver the shirt savers to Mary Cariola. Our next meeting is Thursday, November 12, 11:30 a.m. in Room 204. All are welcome. Bring your lunch and join us for fellowship and work. Our new online giving program offers convenience for you and provides much-needed donation consistency for our congregation.You contributions can be debited automatically from your checking or savings account or processed using your credit or debit card.Offerings can be made weekly, bi-weekly or monthly and can be changed at any time. We continue to offer the Simply Giving program which also allows you to have your contributions automatically deducted from yourbank account. Any changes you make to your giving through the Simply Giving program must go through the church office. Please contact Carol at 381-3970 EXT 10 if you would like to switch from the Simply Giving program to our new online giving program.
Endowment Fund:
The Faith Lutheran Church Permanent Endowment Fund was established in 2004 to provide members and friends the opportunity to make charitable gifts to Faith that will become a permanent endowment providing financial support for the ministry and mission of the Church.
