Define your idea of what a fairy tale is. Fairy tale: A fairy tale is a type of short story that typically features European folkloric fantasy characters, such as dwarves, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, mermaids, trolls, or witches, and usually magic or enchantments

Your understanding of Fairy tales may not be as you thought…Originally, fairy tales were gruesome, graphic and vile stories about horrible murders and torture. This is only a mild descriptions. The Brothers Grimm wrote many of the fairy tales that we know today, however, they were not all sunshine and fairies and love like we have been brought up believing. The fairy tales we know today are adaptations of the original stories. If they were the original stories, they would most certainly not be allowed to be read to children.

Snow White, for example, has been changed and adapted over the years into picture books, stories and films. Using the images, explain how the different versions of Snow White have been presented. What visual features communicate this perception.

Having now looked at some examples of how fairy tales being adapted over time, compare and contrast how females have been presented across the texts. How can you adapt these modern presentations into your own story.

Planning your Fairy TalePlan your fairy tale. Think about the features of a Fairy Tale, perhaps you can twist one of these features? For example, you could have the princess saving the prince, you could tell the story from the point of view of the evil character- the possibilities are endless! You can create your own fairy tale or you can adapt an existing one.
