2013 "Friends of Fairness" | Thank you for your support! Each year the Fairness Campaign prints two “Friends of Fairness” lists of our previous year’s donors in separate newsletters. The first list is alphabetical, by name only, and the second is organized by donation amount. Thank you, all, for your incredible support of LGBT rights in Kentucky!
What’s at stake for LGBT rights in Kentucky Nov. 4? Everything. In the past two years, with your help, we have more than doubled the number of Kentucky cities with LGBT anti-discrimination Fairness laws. Victories in Vicco, Frankfort, Morehead, and Danville paved the way for substantive progress on Statewide Fairness legislation in the Kentucky General Assembly. This year, for the first time in history, a House Committee heard pro-Fairness testimony, breaking more than 15 years’ silence on the issue.
All of these advancements, however, are threatened by the outcome of Kentucky’s General Election November 4th, when control of the State House could end up in Republican hands for the first time in nearly a century. Given the already conservative State Senate, should the Democrats lose their slim 54-46 majority in the House, it is doubtless the first issues on the chopping block will be women’s reproductive freedom, LGBT Fairness, labor rights, and more.
At the municipal level, votes like the Frankfort Board of Commissioners’ narrow 3-2 approval of Fairness protections last year highlight the incredible importance of citywide elections in preserving LGBT rights where they exist. In many non-partisan city council races across the state, you may have the option to vote for many candidates in the same race--be certain to only vote for the candidates who support your issues! If you vote for others as well, you decrease the chance that your candidates will win.
Teams of dedicated C-FAIR volunteers and board members spent dozens of hours interviewing candidates for endorsement in the 2014 Kentucky General Election. Based upon the recommendations of these teams, the full C-FAIR board released endorsements in nearly 40 contested races spanning Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort. Below are brief profiles of C-FAIR endorsed legislative candidates in contested races. Given the sheer volume of judicial races across Jefferson County, we will not be profiling endorsed candidates running for judge--they are listed alongside other endorsed candidates in the following pages. For questions about any C-FAIR endorsements, please e-mail [email protected] or call 502.893.0613. Kentucky Polls are open Tuesday, November 4, 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. For polling locations, visit www.tinyurl.com/KYVote2014.

Meeks has fought tirelessly for LGBT rights, labor rights, voting rights restoration, reproductive freedom, and more.Rep. Darryl Owens for State House 43 | As a former Jefferson County Commissioner, Rep. Darryl Owens was instrumental in helping pass Jefferson County’s comprehensive Fairness ordinance in 1999, which expanded LGBT protections beyond the jurisdiction of Louisville’s original ordinance. Rep. Owens remains a pioneering civil rights leader.Rep. Ruth Ann Palumbo for State House 76 | One of the earliest co-sponsors of Statewide Fairness, Lexington Rep. He’s worked to make healthy, local foods more accessible, preserve neighborhood landmarks, and is an avowed advocate for raising the minimum wage.Susan Johns for Louisville Metro Council 17 | A former State Representative, Susan Johns is a consensus builder with firm social justice beliefs. She believes in raising the minimum wage, is eager to address public safety concerns in her district, and has a proven record of eliminating corporate and government fraud.Councilman Dan Johnson for Louisville Metro Council 21 | Having grown more progressive in his long public service, Councilman Dan Johnson voted in favor of the Fairness ordinance when it was re-enacted after merger. He is a co-sponsor of the minimum wage ordinance and consistently provides excellent constituent service.Councilman Steve Kay for Lexington Council At-Large | A leader in the charge for Lexington to adopt Domestic Partner benefits for city workers, Councilman Steve Kay is a strong supporter of Fairness and equity for all Lexington residents. He is committed to greater access to local foods, city growth, and environmental sustainability.Richard Moloney for Lexington Council At-Large | A former Council member, Richard Moloney was an original vote for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Fairness ordinance in 1999. He has a particular sensitivity to underprivileged and underserved communities and a demonstrated commitment to helping lift the voices of all people.Councilman Kevin Stinnett for Lexington Council At-Large | Current Vice Chair of both Budget and Economic Development Committees, Councilman Kevin Stinnett has been an outspoken advocate for private businesses to adopt their own Domestic Partner benefits. He has a keen sense of local government and funding civic improvement.David Fields for Frankfort Board of Commissioners | A citizen advocate and newcomer to the political arena, David Fields is a strong choice to fill the vacancy of former Commissioner Katie Hedden, a “yes” vote for Fairness who recently moved from the city. A LOUISVILLE “BEST NON-PROFIT” 5 years running!
OtherKentuckians celebrated LGBT Pride Month in historic fashion this year as Danville, home to Centre College, became the commonwealth’s 7th city to pass a local anti-discrimination Fairness ordinance. The 4-1 vote by Danville’s City Commission came after months of advocacy work by local leaders in the Wilderness Trace Chapter of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth (KFTC), which is one of many KFTC chapters helping lead the Fairness movement across our state.
Could you make a contribution of $7, $70, $700 or any amount to celebrate Kentucky’s 7th city with Fairness?
