Dear Parents

Another Top Academic Award for Fairmont

Fairmont receiving their academic award

Left to right: Mrs Penny Vinjevold (Head: Education Western Cape), Mr Ron Dingley (Principal), Ms Debbie Schafer (Minister Education: Western Cape Government),

Mrs Shereen Gallie (Deputy Principal).

Following our award in 2014 for our Grade 9 class of 2013 being placed in the Top 10 schools in the Western Cape for performances in Mathematics and English, we were once again awarded a prize this past Tuesday evening for our improved results in the Systemic Tests of 2014.

An award ceremony was held on Tuesday where we received a certificate and an amount of R15,000.00 for academic excellence, and the improvement in our results by 40 more Grade 9’s scoring above 50% over the previous year.

It was a proud moment as we received the award from the Provincial Minister and the Head of Education, Western Cape.

Well done to the Grade 9’s of 2014 and all their Mathematics and English teachers.

A video clip pertaining to this award will be available on our website.

1) ACADEMICS

With 29 school days remaining this term, our teachers continue to gather marks from tests and projects which will form the basis of the academic results for Term 1.

We encourage our pupils to make every effort during the remaining part of this term.

2) GRADE 11 PARENT’S & LEARNERS EVENING – TUESDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2015

A very important evening has been set aside for Mr Dingley to address all Grade 11 pupils and their parents. This will take place in the Clive Wigg Hall at school on Tuesday, 24 February 2015, at 18h30.

It is imperative that all attend.

3) SCHOOL EMERGENCY NUMBER

A school cellphone has been purchased for emergency calls to the school.

The cellphone will only be switched on when the school is experiencing load shedding and the

school telephone system at this stage is not operational.

The emergency number is: 072 804 4901

Please note that this phone is not for general communication.

8) PARENT FORUM

Appeal for Sponsorship / Assistance with Catering / Refreshments

Fairmont hosts several social / cultural events during the year at which it is traditional for staff and parents to be invited for snacks and refreshments before, during or after the event. For example, Fairmont will shortly be hosting the glamorous evening of Mr & Ms FHS and later in the year, the Matric Dance will take place, also attended by the staff of Fairmont.

We would like to appeal to parents who have contacts in the catering or beverage industries to consider assisting the school for such events. For example, with sponsorship in the form of a donation of juices and/or other beverages, etc. at reduced prices, donating or offering discounted prices on snack platters, etc.

The school will advertise your business in their marketing of the event and in the school’s weekly circular. If you are interested in discussing such sponsorship, we would be very grateful to hear from you. Please contact us:

Tanya Burness 082 658 7587 [email protected]

Colleen Wilson 082 781 9887 [email protected]

Thank You to Eaglevlei Estate

A warm thank you to one of our Fairmont Parents, Manny da Silva of Eaglevlei Wines in Stellenbosch, for his kind donation of some delicious Semillon and award-winning Pinotage for our Meet the Parent Forum gathering last Wednesday.

Please visit Eaglevlei on the R101 and taste wines in its boutique winery (if you have young children they may play in the park with a jungle gym) and enjoy special meals in it’s restaurant. The Estate also has Conference and Wedding / Function facilities. You can contact / view their website at the following addresses: www.eaglevlei.com / [email protected] / Tel: 021 884 4713.

Appeal for Musical Instruments

The Fairmont Music Department is currently establishing a Band and is in need of various musical instruments such as clarinets, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, any percussion instruments, etc.

If any Fairmont Families have instruments at home that they no longer use and would be willing to sell, donate or lend to the school, we would be grateful if you would contact us:

Tanya Burness 082 658 7587 [email protected]

Colleen Wilson 082 781 9887 [email protected]

Parents at the Textbook Repair Workparty

THANK YOU to the parents who so willingly gave up time to join our Textbook Repair Workparty on Thursday, 12 February. We managed to repair a large number of tired and damaged books, as well as covering some lovely new Grade 10 Textbooks … and we had fun in the process!

If you would like to help with our next workparty, please keep watching the Focus and Website. We will be building wooden bench tables for the Quads on Saturday, 14 March, from 08h30. Please come along and be part of the fun!

9) WON LIFE : VOLUNTEER AT OUR LITERACY CENTRE

The Literacy Centre, run in Fisantekraal, is a volunteer-driven organization that relies on willing members of the public to volunteer their time reading with those learners eager to learn this very important milestone.

With each volunteer, Won Life is able to extend their reach and really make a difference in the community of Fisantekraal. If you can spare an hour or two each week, please email Won Life on:

[email protected]

Watching the faces of these children as they reach each small milestone will give you a great sense of reward.

10) RCL FEEDBACK

The RCL has had a very busy month!

The RCL camp at Gevonden took place on the first weekend of February. This was followed by Spirit Week in the build-up to Interschools and hosting Valentine's Week in the form of selling roses and a bake sale. CHOC hearts were sold in order to raise funds for a cancer organisation, and the RCL Civvies Day saw Fairmont donned in red, pink and white.

The teddy bear drive was a major success, and our RCL representatives dropped off boxes of teddy bears at Huis Magdalena … much to their surprise and appreciation.

Ice-creams were handed out to the school as a THANK YOU for all the effort put into Interschools. This busy group of young people are always working behind the scenes and never stop in their aim to serve the school!

The next event is the Mad Hatter's Teacher's Tea! Thank you to the RCL for all they do and giving up their time so selflessly.

From a point of view of the cheering and spectatorship, the line between winning or not is very fine.

Well done to the Durbanville athletes on their win.

To all our Fairmont pupils, I was very proud of you and your efforts last Friday.

Thank you to those parents who supported our “journey” to Coetzenburg, and to those parents who were present on the day.

19) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE OF THE WEEK

WITWATERSRAND by WILBUR SMITH

20) WELL DONE
