Past pupil of Fairmont High School (2007), Richard Murray, overcame the weather to claim the biggest win of his career in Edmonton, Canada, on Sunday, 6 September 2015.
1) ACADEMICS
Next week our grade 8’s and 9’s will be writing their ANA’s (Annual National Assessment) in English and Mathematics. Parents have been informed about the nature of these assessments and we hope that our grade 8’s and 9’s will perform to the best of their abilities.
Three school weeks remain this term before our very brief October vacation. We will shortly be informing parents of our busy first week of term, culminating in the matric valedictory ceremony.

PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

4) PAST PUPIL’S DAY
We were blessed with excellent weather this past Saturday, 5 September and a most successful fun-filled day was held at Fairmont (as can clearly be seen in the photos that were taken).
The various sport games were competitive, but played in good spirit. We would like to extend our thanks to all the spectators who gave up a Saturday morning to support our current and past pupils.
We were honoured to host past Fairmont Principal, Mr Clive Wigg, and Vice-Principal Mr Alastair Frost and their spouses. I am sure they left with tremendous pride as Mr Dingley showcased the Indoor Aquatic Centre and various other Fairmont initiatives.
This annual event has gained some momentum as families are supporting in their numbers. Next year the Aquatic Centre will be functional and watersports will hopefully be a possibility.
On behalf of the Fairmont Past Pupils, thank you for hosting us and we all look forward to this wonderful event next year.
Our thanks go out to Mr Dingley, Mr Horsthemke, Mr De Pentieiros, and all the Fairmont coaches and managers, including the staff members who assisted in the various sport teams and catering on the day.

5) SANTA SHOEBOX PROJECT
Our Fairmont learners are busy filling boxes for the Santa Shoebox project.
Each class has elected their shoebox reps who are managing the pledges from their class.
To-date: Fairmont has pledged 185 boxes!
If any Fairmont Families wish to pledge additional boxes through the school, or make a donation, please e-mail Mrs Jones on [email protected]
Remember: Every shoebox must have the minimum contents.
The items must be new and age appropriate.
Each box is pledged to a specific recipient and the learners will receive the details (NAME, age and gender) of their box’s recipient this week .
The minimum contents are:
Toothbrush & toothpaste
Facecloth & soap
Sweets
Educational supplies
An outfit of Clothing (age appropriate size is NB)
A Toy
Paper boxes in which reams of printer paper are packed can be cut down to the ideal size.

If learners have any questions they must ask Natalie Hoal (11Un) and Cayley Jones (11Sw) in grade 11, or pop in to room 70.
The box itself: Boxes larger than medium (20 x 34 x 11cm) size might not be accepted. Decorated medium sized plastic tubs are welcome too.
6) GRADE 8 TECHNOLOGY

7) AVIATOR’S EVENT – 9 OCTOBER 2015
An Aviator’s event will be hosted by Air Force Base Ysterplaat (Cape Town) on 9 October 2015 for school children (grade 10 – 12). All school children are invited to join from 08h00 until 15h00. The main attraction will be the Bloodhound replica car (13,4 meter scale 1:1 modular version). It is a Supersonic Car designed to go faster than the speed of sound. The Bloodhound SSC is a jet and rocket powered car designed to go at 1,000 mph (just over 1,600 kph). Mr Dave Rowley, the Director Education of the Bloodhound SSC Project, will give a detailed presentation. Wesbank SAGMJ car of the year finalists will be displayed.
The event’s theme will encompass STEM education (referring to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
On display will be current and historical aircraft. The SA Air Force Silver Falcons air display team will also be amongst the children and will render an air display. Unique motor vehicles on display will be the VW Beetle (80 years old), the Citroën DS (60 years old), and other classic cars. Civilian flying clubs will also attend and selected children will be afforded the opportunity to get a “flip” in these aircraft.
No entrance fee is required, but refreshments are available. Access to the event is limited (booking is essential) and proof of identification at access gates is required. Please mail me your name list ASAP to avoid disappointment.
Schools must arrange their own transport to and from their respective schools. Schools are encouraged to inform children to wear school uniform (although not a requirement).

13) BEARS DINNER
The Fairmont Monty 1st XV Rugby team enjoyed a spit dinner this past Saturday to wrap up their very successful rugby year.
Players were recognized for their contribution to the team, and much fun was had by all attending the function.

RUGBY REPORT : U14’S vs WESTERFORD
Mikey led out the Trojans on a beautiful winter morning for their last home game against Westerford.
We started the morning with 3 forwards calling in sick. However, even with a scrumhalf on flank, our forwards put in their best performance of the season. Darren was the outstanding forward and was rewarded with a stunning try. With the forwards providing go-forward ball, the backs could run freely leading to Mikey and Caleb scoring beautiful tries. Special mention must be made of Max who played a stunning game on flank. Not bad for a wing!
Unfortunately we let them in with a late try. Final score 20 - 5.
It was good to finish off the season with a structured measured performance!
Well done to the coaching staff and management!

Matthew Moreau (Gr. 11)
Matthew was recently capped and received his SA colours and blazer for South African Baseball.
He is currently in Japan participating in the World Cup Baseball U18 where he is excelling among the world’s best.
James Burness (Gr. 9) & Kyle Harrison (Gr. 9)
Congratulations to James and Kyle! They won silver at the Eskom Cape Town Regional Science Expo held at UCT. Their project was entitled: ‘Lasers for cutting lawns’ - an innovative idea that uses lasers to cut grass instead of the conventional lawnmower.

Samuel van der Merwe (Gr. 11)
Samuel has been chosen to go to the SA Cross Country Championships this Saturday, 12 September 2015, in Middelburg.
We wish Samuel all the best at this meeting.
