1) ACADEMICS

From Monday, our entire school will be involved in the mid-year examinations. We wish our grade 8 and 9 learners all the best as they commence their exam sessions on Monday.

FAIRMONT FOCUS - TWO-IN-ONE

Please note that we have included FAIRMONT FOCUS NO. 17 and this week’s FAIRMONT FOCUS NO. 18 in this single edition. Last week was an extremely busy week and we simply ran out of time. Our apologies to our readers for any inconvenience or confusion this might have caused.

FAIRMONT LEARNERS JAYWALKING

A number of our learners have been seen jaywalking across Durban Road. Please refrain from doing this. Besides it being against the law, you are putting your life in danger as the traffic moves very quickly in this area. Please use the robot crossing to cross the road.

Fairmont Festival 4 June 2015

Dear Sir/Madam,

The Fairmont High School Parent Forum is planning a ‘Fairmont Festival’ Food and Fun Day hosting a ‘Battle of the Bands’ event on the 31 October 2015.

This is an open invitation to School Bands (Learners who have a band or want to perform as a band) to participate in the competition which will culminate in a playoff during the course of the days’ events. It is planned that school bands from other high schools in the greater Durbanville area and the Boland will be participating. We anticipate that 10 bands will be performing and competing during the course of the day.

The Festival event will take place from 10h00 through to 21h00 on the Saturday and will be held outside in a food market and entertainment area on the school grounds. The event is expected to attract more than 2,000 people, given the line of entertainment we have in stall.

Rules for the band competition include:

Each Band will be given a slot of 30 minutes to perform and are expected to perform at least 3 musical items. They will be judged by a panel of judges and together with audience feedback, a short list of 3 bands will enter into the final play off.

A Band should consist of at least 3 members. If a group of two members or a prospective one-man band be considered to compete, then this would be permitted on merit during auditions.

The event is to be held outside on a stage surrounded by food and fun stall activities.

The bands are expected to be available from the start of the event (one hour before the beginning of the event) and throughout the day until the finals are held.

Page 4: Fairmont Focus 17&18: 29 May 2015

Each band is to bring their own musical instruments and amplifiers including power and audio hook up cables.

An entrance fee of R300 per band is payable upfront upon acceptance of the application before auditions are performed. Should the band not be accepted after the audition process is complete, the money will be refunded.

The applicants are required to provide a recorded demo of at least three songs they wish to enter into the competition.

Auditions will be held one month before the festival to assess the band’s eligibility to perform. The date(s) of the auditions will be communicated once applications are received and processed.

The Band and crew are to be on site one hour before the beginning of the event and remain on site until the final is complete.

Judges decisions are final and no debate will be considered. Judging will be based on musical ability, performance as a team, originality and stage presence. Crowd feedback will be considered.

The criteria of assessment for acceptance are as follows:

No blasphemy or swearing

No inappropriate lyrics

No political or racist lyrics

Dress code to be assessed and no provocative attire will be accepted

Originality will be considered as a draw card

A wide repertoire will be seen as an advantage

Good musical ability

Acceptable repertoire to fit into a community function fun day

Preliminary times for the event

Note – these will change in due course once entries are finalised. Updated times will be communicated before the event.

RUGBY

1st Team vs Fairbairn College

This week has been particularly tough with preparations being hampered by injuries. The team spirit was much better at practice during the week. This very young side showed the first signs of playing as a unit and it resulted in a well-deserved win over Somerset College last week.

Keeping our feet on the ground, we took more confidence in to preparation for which we knew was going to be a big onslaught from a strong Fairbairn side. Strategies were laid out at the weekly team meeting and it was executed quite well on game day. The first half was a bit sloppy with too many silly errors. In the second half, the Bears came back with more urgency and didn’t allow the opposition any continuity. This resulted in frustration from the opposition and some off-the-ball incidents started to creep in to the game.

Although the weather was awesome for rugby, the boys took a while to get their momentum going. Both teams were trying their best to get the upper hand and with some good patience, it was Fairmont who was going to be first over the try line.

This just gave the boys more belief in themselves and they started playing some good enterprising rugby. Mistakes were always going to happen, but the Fairmont Bears just kept grinding away.

The game, played mainly by a more determined Bears team, allowed them to finally convert more points and went on to be 22 : 13 victors. The junior players definitely showed that there are good things to come in the future. The forwards played really well and laid the foundation for the backline to play on the front foot. A very good effort from the squad as each one had to dig deep and believe in his fellow team mate.

Still room for lots of improvement, but it’s about progress … not perfection.

1st Team vs Parel Vallei

The boys had a pretty good workout this week and preparations went according to schedule.

Focusing on hands and protecting the ball, we needed to execute, and most of the structures run in the week where done over and over again. A few niggles and injuries from the previous week allowed for a few new faces to showcase their ability.

One of the most emotional starts to a school encounter I have ever attended. We unfortunately lost a dear father to our lock Caydenn Schneider. This unfortunate situation brought the boys close together with the whole team wearing black arm bands in his honour. The stage was set as each team walked onto the field and observed a minute’s silence.

The game was played in rather wet conditions, although the rain stayed away. The tempo of the game was huge and each team was ready to give their all. What a tremendous exhibition of good structured rugby with Fairmont maintaining good possession throughout the first 15 minutes. This unfortunately never resulted in points as the ball was either lost in the final play or not protecting the ball well enough. The defense lines held well when required and this made scoring opportunities on both sides very difficult. It was Fairmont who managed to cross the white wash first for an unconverted try. Parel Vallei came back and ran some really hard lines and eventually managed to score a well worked try with a difficult conversion taken really well by their no 12. This put the visitors in the lead for the first time and this lead to some good rugby being played by both teams. Parel Vallei applied some good pressure for a period of time. A few penalty opportunities where missed by both sides before Joshua Julies slotted a long range kick to put Fairmont ahead which eventually sealed the game.

Fairmont struggled to name a Man of the Match as there were some good contributions within the team. It deservedly went to Austin Macaskill for his relentless efforts in the lineouts and around the fringes, making some telling tackles. Overall it was again an improvement from last week as Fairmont gained good lineout balls and scrummed really well with the backs enjoying some good front foot ball and looking attackingly dangerous at times.

It would only be fair to congratulate both teams on their discipline and spirit in which the game was played.

Final score: Fairmont 8 : 7 Parel Vallei

Try Scorer: Jordan Kroll

Penalty: Joshua Julies

U14 Team vs Somerset College

Mikey and Aiden led out the Trojans on a beautiful winter morning against Somerset College.

They started out very slow. Somerset College were soon ahead with an unconverted try. We fought back and Mikey shot a great skip pass to Caleb who ran straight and hard for a good try. They hit back with a penalty and by half time they were ahead 8 : 5.

The coaches were not happy as the boys were not implementing what had been taught at practice.

In the second half, we scored another try with exactly the same skip pass and straight running by Caleb. This time, Mikey converted and we were up 12 : 8. Five minutes before the end, Somerset College hit back with a converted try taking it to 12 – 15. Then … for the last 3 minutes … these boys played the best rugby of the game and a last minute decision went against them.

However they did not deserve to win and will hopefully learn from this.

Caleb 2 tries, 10 points

Mikey 1 Conversion 2 points

Well done to Cian and Sean. They did a great job preparing the boys. This team has great potential, and I’m very excited to watch them grow and develop.

U14 Team vs Fairbairn College

Mikey led out the Trojans on a beautiful chilly winter morning for their second home game against Fairburn.

They started out with a bang where the ball was kicked through and both Mikey and Caleb dived on the ball to score their first ever communal try which Caleb converted. Fairburn hit straight back and was ahead until the last quarter leading 28 – 19.

Our boys never gave up and kept on fighting back. Our defence was not as good as it can be, but the boys ran hard, especially Aiden who was rewarded with 2 tries, and Caleb who converted Michael’s try from the corner.

Final score 29 – 28 for Fairmont. We’ll take it.

Page 9: Fairmont Focus 17&18: 29 May 2015

U14 Team vs Parel Vallei

Mikey and Zack led out the Trojans on a beautiful chilly winter morning for their third home game against Parel Vallei.

They really had a strong pack of forwards, and although our boys tried hard we struggled to get our hands on the ball. When we did get the ball we looked good, but we spent most of our time defending leading to some injuries. Halftime saw us trailing 14 - 0

Even with a reshuffled team, our boys never gave up and kept on fighting back. Caleb scored two beautiful tries and converted them.

Final score 24 Parel Valley - 14 Caleb.

U15 Team vs Somerset College

The Monty Tigers travelled to Somerset College on Saturday to take on the challenge having experienced lots of rain on Friday. We were really blessed to be greeted with a lovely sunny winters day, with a very heavy field under foot.

The Monty Tigers have a New Coaching Staff for 2015. The Team are already showing much improvement with the focus being on team work, and increasing the intensity of play.

Coach AJ is still playing with a few combinations, rotating players in different positions - trying to get a feel for the Best 15 players to start with.

The first half was very evenly balanced with The Tigers enjoying a territorial advantage, coming close to scoring on a few occasions.

6 minutes remaining in the second half, Inam Mbobosi playing right wing ran through a number of players, passing the ball to Kerwyn Julies who stormed over to score a try. Score 5 – 0 Monties lead.

Somerset College kicked off and bounced back with a last minute converted try. Half time score 5 : 7 to Somerset College.

The 2nd half was still a very evenly fought match by both teams considering we lost a few players to injury who did not take the field after half time. The reserve players can be proud of themselves.

10 minutes left on the clock in the 2nd half and The Monty Tigers have a 5 meter scrum from Somerset College try line. Dylan Cloete made a run and passed to Gregory Hierse who crashed over for a bruising try after a big shove over the line by his forwards. Monty flyhalf, Keegan Smith, converted the points: Score 14 : 12 Monty’s trail with 10 minutes left to play. Back and forth the two teams play with huge tackles by both teams with neither teams wanting to give an inch. 3 minutes to go on the score board and Somerset College get awarded a penalty and take it quickly to score a try close to the posts.

Final Score 21 – 12 in Somerset College favour

The Monty Tigers showed huge heart and determination with the final score not a true reflection of how close the game actually was.

Girls’ 2nd Team vs Fairbairn College

Our girls enjoyed a good weekend with excellent team work. They first beat Bellville on Friday night; 3 : 0, and then went on to beat Fairbairn College 4 : 0 on Saturday.

Well done, ladies!

Even the rain

Couldn’t numb the pain

We will still remain the same

With a whole lot of game

And a proud name

We were the best

With a very wet vest

Herschel can say their goodbyes

Because time flies

And frustration lies

And therefore we don’t have to see their eyes.

Although we lost terribly

We came back merrily

We fought till the end

Although we wish it was pretend

But we will have to mend

Accepting disappointments and frustrations and overcoming them by working together and hard.

Having faith in the course of action chosen for the team and being committed to it knowing it may not always be my preference.

We choose to do this thing NOT because it is easy, but because it is HARD!

8) SPONSORSHIP FOR ANNUAL PRODUCTION

Rehearsals for Fairmont’s Annual Production are underway and our actors, singers and dancers are gearing up to put on another original and entertaining musical of which we can all be proud.

The Production will run from 12 August, ending with a glamorous Gala evening on Friday 14 August. The costs of staging a slick production are significant and we are appealing to Fairmont families for help in specific areas to enable us to make this important event on our School Cultural Calendar a great success.

We would be very grateful if anyone has contacts in the beverage industry and is in a position to offer to sponsor juice or flavoured water for the Gala evening. We expect to be catering for 100/120 people.

We are also still looking for pieces of antique furniture similar to those shown below. If any Fairmont families have any which they would be willing to sell, donate or lend to the school, we would be grateful if you would contact us. Alternatively if you have contacts in the antique furniture business, perhaps you could help us?

9) PARENT FORUM

The Matric Experience Expo The Matric Experience Expo took place last week at Tygervalley Shopping Centre, and was a great success. Exhibitors included dress designers, vehicle hire, suit hire, cosmetic jewellery, hair and make-up, colleges, gap year programs and driving schools.

The Grade 11 MADCO team proudly represented Fairmont while selling raffle tickets to raise funds for the matric dance this year. There was also a dropoff point for unwanted eveningwear, shoes, jewellery and so on for the Princess Project. We collected 2 car boots full of items, and these will be donated to underprivileged matric learners who would otherwise not be able to afford a matric dance.

We would like to say a big thank you to a number of people, without whom this project would not have been as successful:

Barbara Sithole, Di Pretorius and Anna Conradie for assisting Colleen and Liza with calling and e-mailing prospective exhibitors, over and over and over again.

Christa Vermeulen for the loan of the clothes rail, and Heidi Sparks for the loan of the coat hangers for use at the Princess Project stand.

Tygervalley Centre for the opportunity to host the event on their premises.

All the Fairmont pupils, parents and staff who supported the event.

Cream Events Library, particularly Carlyn Conradie and Ariska Treverrow, for organizing and facilitating the entire event for us.

We managed to raise just short of R40 000 from the event, and look forward to hosting an even bigger and better ME-X next year along with these dedicated and hard-working ladies.

11) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE

If you don’t like studying very

much, but would like to obtain

good marks, then this book was

written especially for you! Many

learners achieve poor results,

because they don’t like to

study. They usually don’t like

studying because they don’t

know how to study and have

used incorrect study methods for

years. SURVIVE YOUR

STUDIES is a book crammed

with helpful hints, to ensure that

your studies are not only a

pleasant experience, but to

assist you in studying

successfully!

SURVIVE YOUR

STUDIES was written

to explain how your

brain absorbs,

processes, stores and

relates information.

The ability to study is

not a talent, but a skill

which can be acquired.

SURVIVE YOUR

STUDIES supplies you

with the researched

facts in order to master

this skill.

14) PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

On Monday this week I was sitting with my grade 9 class as they were revising a section of their work. When the lesson ended, on my way out, I was handed this caricature from one of the girls I teach. Any resemblance?

The remaining 4 weeks of school is a busy time for our staff as they prepare examination papers and work their way through marking over 10,000 examination scripts. We wish them well during this focused time knowing that the mid-year break is only 16 school days away.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Yours sincerely
