Fox and Copelan Earn Major Awards, 11 Stags Recognized with CAA HonorsSperry, Neubauer and Buchanan collect First Team All-CAA laurels

RICHMOND, Va. – Will Fox was named the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year as 11 members of the No. 19 Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team were recognized on the All-CAA Teams. Head Coach Andy Copelan was chosen as the Coach of the Year after leading the Stags to the CAA regular season championship in their fi rst season as members of the conference.

Fairfi eld, which hosts the CAA Championship this weekend, tied with Hofstra and Towson with a conference-best three First Team All-CAA honorees. The Stags nabbed a league-best eight total All-CAA honors in addition to three All-Rookie nods (tying Drexel for the CAA-high) and an All-Academic Team selection.

“Having this number of All-CAA selections, and having a representative from every position, exemplifi es the type of balance that we have,” said Copelan. “All of our honorees would tell you that these awards belong to the entire team. We have come a long way from our 2-4 start, and I’m remarkably proud of our guys for that.”

Fox, who was selected as Second Team All-CAA and a member of the CAA All-Rookie Team in addition to his Rookie of the Year nod, ranks among the conference and national leaders as a faceoff specialist. The fi ve-time CAA Rookie of the Week owns a win percentage of .576 (106-of-184) at the faceoff ‘X’, slotting him at second in CAA and 15th nationally. His average of 3.43 ground balls per contest ranks him fi fth in the CAA and 65th among all Division I players. In the Stags’ fi ve CAA outings, Fox won 43-of-73 (.589) draws and scooped up an average of fi ve ground balls per game.

Seventh-year head coach Andy Copelan earns his fi rst Coach of the Year honor as leader of the Stags and the second of his career; Copelan was previously named MAAC Coach of the Year as head coach at Marist College in 2004. This spring, Copelan guided Fairfi eld to a record of 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the CAA en route to the Stags’ second straight regular season title (2014 ECAC Lacrosse League). Under his leadership, Fairfi eld also garnered a USILA national ranking for the fourth consecutive season and, after besting then-No. 20 Villanova on March 21 at Rafferty Stadium, the Stags have knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent in all seven of his campaigns at the helm. Copelan, who has never closed a season with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play, is 64-40 at Fairfi eld and 82-55 as a head coach overall.

Three Stags – all co-captains of the 2015 club – earned First Team All-CAA recognition at three different positions. Heading the list is senior attackman Tristan Sperry, Fairfi eld’s leading scorer in 2015. A First Team All-ECAC honoree last spring, Sperry has scored 20 goals and handed out a team-leading 23 assists to account for his 43 points. He adds 33 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Against CAA competition, Sperry scored fi ve goals – including the double-overtime game-winner against Delaware on April 18 and doled out eight assists.

For his career, Sperry ranks ninth all-time in the Fairfi eld record books with 124 points and sits seventh in assists with 53. His 71 career goals are two short of the all-time top-10 in Stags’ history.

Junior midfi elder TJ Neubauer adds a First Team All-CAA nod to his career résumé, which also includes 2014 First Team All-ECAC and All-NEILA laurels. An Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Honorable Mention and Preseason All-CAA selection this spring, Neubauer has been Fairfi eld’s leading goal scorer for the second straight campaign with 29 markers. He has also distributed three assists and ranks second on the team behind Fox with 44 ground balls. Neubauer scored 10 goals in CAA action.

With his senior campaign still ahead of him, Neubauer already ranks ninth in Fairfi eld history with 76 career goals.

Rounding out Fairfi eld’s First Team All-CAA honoree is senior defenseman Max Buchanan. A Preseason All-CAA pick, Buchanan adds the fi rst postseason all-conference honor of his career after starting all 14 games to date for the nation’s second-ranked scoring defense with 7.36 goals allowed per game. Buchanan has grabbed 27 ground balls this spring with eight caused turnovers.

The Stags placed fi ve student-athletes, including Fox at faceoff specialist, on the All-CAA Second Team. Up front, senior attackman Colin McLinden picks up the third all-conference nod of his career. The two-time All-ECAC selection, who was also a USILA All-America Honorable Mention in 2014 and an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Honorable Mention this season, has scored 12 goals and doled out 20 assists in 2015. McLinden scored eight points with four goals and four assists in the Stags’ fi ve CAA contests.

After tallying at least one point in every game this spring, McLinden continues to climb the charts in Fairfi eld’s career record books. He is currently tied for sixth all-time with 139 career points and slots third all-time with 87 career assists.

A newcomer to the Fairfi eld lineup, junior Charlie Schnider earns Second Team All-CAA honors in the Stags’ midfi eld. The transfer from Ohio State totaled 17 goals and 13 assists this season, including a run of 11 straight games with a goal from February 18 to April 11. Schnider also grabbed 11 ground balls with three caused turnovers.

Conor Barr is another fi rst-time honoree for the Stags as a long stick midfi elder. Barr collects Second Team All-CAA laurels on the heels of collecting 22 ground balls with 11 caused turnovers as a part of Fairfi eld’s defensive effort.

The Stags’ starting goalkeeper for the last seven contests, including all fi ve CAA games, Tyler Behring adds Second Team All-CAA honors to a season that has previously included NCAA.com Division I Defensive Player of the Week, Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week and CAA Player of the Week honors. In a total of 443:22 between the posts, Behring owns a 5.95 goals-against average and .645 save percentage in addition to 18 ground balls and three caused turnovers.

As the CAA Rookie of the Year, Fox also heads the list of All-Rookie Team honorees. He is joined by classmates Jesse Gwozdz and Joe Rodrigues. Gwozdz has appeared in all 14 games in the defensive midfi eld, collecting two ground balls with four caused turnovers. Rodrigues took the fi eld as an attack in all 14 contests, including seven starts, and racked up 11 goals and two assists.

Senior midfi elder Drew Federico is Fairfi eld’s representative on the CAA All-Academic Team. The Finance major and co-captain of the 2015 Stags has registered eight goals and nine assists along with 13 ground balls this spring.

In addition to Fox and Copelan, the CAA’s major awards went to Player of the Year Sam Llinares from Hofstra and Defensive Player of the Year Tyler White from Towson.

2015 Game Notes 4 Fairfi eld University Men’s Lacrosse

Head Coach Andy CopelanSeventh Season • Bucknell ’032015 CAA Coach of the Year

The 2015 season is Andy Copelan’s seventh at the helm of the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team. He has posted a 64-40 record with the Stags and, in the midst of his ninth campaign, owns an NCAA Division I head coaching record of 82-55.

Copelan was named the program’s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Fairfi eld ranked as high as 11th in the polls last spring, having entered the national ledger in each of the last three seasons and fi ve of Copelan’s fi rst six years on the sidelines. The 2014 edition of the club boasted a fi nal record of 12-4, tying the program’s single-season wins mark. The campaign included a seven-game winning streak, the team’s fi rst-ever ECAC Lacrosse League Regular Season Championship and a trip to ECAC Championship Game.

Fairfi eld student-athletes also continued to gain the national spotlight individually as 2014 ECAC Goalkeeper of the Year Jack Murphy was drafted by the Boston Cannons in the eighth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Murphy represents the eighth Stag during Copelan’s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks, and Fairfi eld has had at least one MLL draftee in each of the last three seasons following the selections of Sam Snow and Marshall Johnson in 2013 and Brent Adams and Charlie Cipriano in 2012.

In addition, Colin McLinden was tabbed as a USILA All-America Honorable Mention last spring, marking the fourth Stag to earn All-America laurels in the last three seasons. McLinden was also one of three All-NEILA and one of nine All-ECAC honorees from Copelan’s squad.

Fairfi eld made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from 2011-14, including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program has earned several landmark victories. Copelan’s 2013 club recorded the Stags’ fi rst-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team with an overtime triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfi eld team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game. All told, the Stags have bested at least one ranked opponent in each of Copelan’s six seasons at Fairfi eld.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfi eld. The Stags have had 39 student-athletes earn All-ECAC Academic Team honors under Copelan’s tutelage, including a program-high 10 honorees in 2014.

Signs of the Stags’ return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His fi rst team went 7-6 overall to earn the program’s fi rst winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the fi rst time since joining the league in 2006. Fairfi eld has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure.

Fairfi eld is the second head coaching stop on Copelan’s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his fi rst season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program’s fi rst winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its fi rst-ever NCAA postseason berth.

His two-year run with the Red Foxes produced nine All-MAAC honorees, including 2004 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year Keith Detelj and 2005 Rookie of the Year Dan Needle.

After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from 2006-08, rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan’s three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four.

Copelan also served as the recruiting coordinator for Maryland in his fi nal two seasons, with great success. Inside Lacrosse ranked the Terps’ 2007 incoming class as the second best in the nation, and the 2008 class was dubbed as a third-best in the country. Individually, Copeland helped the Terps to secure six of 2008’s top-50 high school recruits.

The Inaugural SeasonThe Fairfi eld men’s and women’s

lacrosse teams held the offi cial dedication of Rafferty Stadium on Saturday, March 21 as a part of a season-long celebration of the venue’s inaugural season.

The construction of Rafferty Stadium was made possible through the generosity of Fairfi eld alumni, parents and friends. The stadium is named in recognition of the principal leadership gift from Larry Rafferty ’64 and his family, and the fi eld is named in recognition of a gift from Tim Conway ’76 and family.

Two victories on the newly-named Conway Field highlighted the March 21 festivities as the Fairfi eld women’s squad downed Manhattan, 12-3, and the men’s team topped No. 20 Villanova, 11-4.

Fairfi eld University President Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J. performed a blessing of Rafferty Stadium and delivered the afternoon’s keynote address.

Scouting MassachusettsThe Minutemen from the University of Massachusetts enter

the postseason with a record of 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the CAA. UMass most recently lost a last-second decision to Delaware, 10-9, in Amherst to conclude the regular season on April 24.

The CAA’s top-scoring offense with 9.92 goals per game is led by Second Team All-CAA attackman Nick Mariano. Mariano has racked up 21 goals and 16 assist, leading the Minutemen in both categories. Peter Lindley adds 25 points (16g, 9a) and Gianni Bianchin has contributed 24 (12g, 12a).

Two All-CAA performers head the defensive unit in First Team defenseman Kyle Karaska and Second Team midfi elder Ryan Izzo. The UMass defense ceded a CAA-worst 11.08 goals per game on the season as a whole, but did not allow more than 10 goals in a CAA game (Fairfi eld, Delaware) this spring.

Zach Oliveri spent the majority of time in goal for the Minutemen, compiling a 10.67 goals-against average and a .496 save percentage.

UMass leads the all-time series with the Stags, 7-3, but Fairfi eld has picked up a victory over the Minutemen in each of the last two seasons. The 2014 meeting renewed a series that had been dormant since 2009.

Aside from the CAA slate, Fairfi eld and UMass did not share any common opponents in 2015. A complete recap of the regular season meeting between the Stags and Minutemen is available on page 20.

The Nation Takes NoticeAfter clinching the CAA regular season title with Friday’s

win over Hofstra, the Stags re-entered the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division I Coaches’ Poll this week at No. 19.

Fairfi eld previously held a national ranking on April 6, claiming the No. 20 spot in both the USILA poll and the Inside Lacrosse Cascade/Maverik Media Poll on the heels of a fi ve-game winning streak.

The Stags have earned a USILA national ranking in each of the last four seasons under Head Coach Andy Copelan.

Consistency Is KeyTristan Sperry and Colin McLinden have both tallied at

least one point in every game this season. Not surprisingly, the duo also ranks among the Stags’ scoring leaders. Sperry has piled up a team-best 43 points (20g, team-high 23a) while McLinden has amassed 32 points (12g, 20a).

Spanning back to 2014, McLinden is in the midst of a 17-game streak with at least one point, while Sperry has notched at least one point in 15 consecutive contests.

The team leader in goals for the second straight season is TJ Neubauer, who has scored 29 markers from the Stags’ midfi eld. Neubauer, who scored a team-best 33 goals en route to 38 total points during the 2014 campaign, has also doled out three assists this spring. In addition, his 44 ground balls are among the most by non-faceoff specialists in the CAA this season.

Becoming a ‘Regular’ OccurrenceThe 2015 CAA regular season championship marks the

Stags’ second consecutive regular season title. Fairfi eld won the 2014 ECAC Lacrosse League regular season crown in the league’s fi nal year of existence.

Since joining the NCAA Division I varsity ranks in 1993, the Stags had not won a conference regular season title prior to 2014.

Defense Does ItFairfi eld’s defense has registered a scoreless quarter (in

regulation) in six contests, and all 14 foes to date have been limited to one goal or fewer in at least one quarter of action against the Stags.

Including their most recent outing against Hofstra on April 24, the stags have allowed a season-low four goals in four contests this spring.

For the season as a whole, Fairfi eld shares the No. 2 ranking in the nation and top spot in the CAA with Towson with an average of 7.36 goals per game allowed.

Rookie RecognitionWill Fox’s CAA Rookie of the Year nod comes after the

freshman faceoff specialist was named the Association’s Rookie of the Week on a league-high fi ve occasions in the 2015 regular season.

Fox, who was also named Second Team All-CAA, CAA All-Rookie and the Fairfi eld Athletics Male Freshman of the Year, owns a win percentage of .576 (106-of-184) at the faceoff ‘X’ to rank second in CAA and 15th nationally. His average of 3.43 ground balls per contest ranks him fi fth in the CAA and 65th among all Division I players. In the Stags’ fi ve CAA outings, Fox won 43-of-73 (.589) draws and scooped up an average of fi ve ground balls per game.

Behring DownAfter posting a 3.56 goals-against average with a .759 save

percentage in Fairfi eld victories on March 17 and March 21, sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Behring earned NCAA.com Division I Defensive Player of the Week, Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week and CAA Player of the Week honors.

In eight appearances this spring, including the fi rst seven starts of his collegiate career, Behring owns a 5.95 goals-against average and .645 save percentage in addition to 18 ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Behring would currently lead the nation in goals-against average if he had logged enough minutes to qualify for the national ledger.

The Second Team All-CAA selection made a career-best 16 saves while surrending just four goals in consecutive starts - the March 21 win over then-No. 20 Villanova and the March 28 win at Drexel in the Stags’ CAA opener.

Game 15 7 2015 CAA Championship Semifi nals

Overtime Odds & EndsThe double-overtime win against Delaware on April 18

marked the Stags’ return to their winning ways when a game exceeds 60 minutes of action; the March 7 loss at No. 6 Yale ended a six-game winning streak for Fairfi eld in overtime contests.

Fairfi eld’s last game to reach multiple overtimes was a triple-overtime victory at Hofstra in 2012. That game was a part of a three-game stretch that also saw the Stags top Bryant, 9-8 in double overtime and UMBC in overtime all in the span of eight days.

The Stags are 8-3 overall under Head Coach Andy Copelan when a game goes beyond regulation. Fairfi eld has played at least one overtime game in each of Copelan’s seven seasons and last completed an entire season without an overtime contest in 2007.

Prior to the past two contests with Yale, Fairfi eld last played overtime contests against the same team in consecutive seasons during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The Stags upended then-No. 10 Denver, 9-8, in overtime in 2012 and followed with a 10-9 overtime win at then-No. 1 Denver in 2013 - the program’s fi rst-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team.

Fairfi eld vs. Ranked OpponentsFollowing the March 21 win over then-No. 20 Villanova,

Fairfi eld has defeated at least one ranked opponent (in the USILA Coaches’ Poll) in each of Andy Copelan’s seven seasons at the helm - including a win at then-No. 1 Denver during the 2013 season.

Share the WealthNine different Stags scored goals at Massachusetts-Lowell

on March 17 with Jake Knostman and TJ Neubauer as the only players to net multiple tallies in the 11-5 win.

The last time nine Stags scored in one game was on Feb. 22, 2014 in a victory over Manhattan.

Ten or more Fairfi eld players last scored in the same game on March 13, 2012 - a 17-12 win over visiting Lafayette.

Former Friar Catches FireSophomore attackman Alex Corboy - in his fi rst season at

Fairfi eld - made the most of his fi rst start and second overall appearance with the Stags on March 14. Corboy scored a team-high four goals in the 13-9 win over Colgate.

Corboy ranked third on the team as a freshman at Providence last spring with 20 goals and 22 total points scored for the Friars.

Five Nets FiveJunior midfi elder Charlie Schnider had his fi rst breakout

offensive performance for the Stags in the 15-4 win over Manhattan on Feb. 21. The transfer from Ohio State scored fi ve goals - fueled by a fi rst-period hat trick - and handed out an assist in the victory.

For Openers...In 23 years as an NCAA varsity program, the Stags are 14-9

in their season opener. Fairfi eld has won 12 of its last 14 season openers and has begun the campaign at 1-0 in fi ve of seven years under Head Coach Andy Copelan.

KEEPING UP WITH THE COMPETITION(through games played April 28)

The Stags’ 2015 non-CAA opponents are a combined 59-68. Three Fairfi eld foes appear in the most recent USILA Coaches’ Poll in addition to Bucknell, Drexel and Towson, all of whom are currently unranked but receiving votes on the ledger. 2015 Game Notes 10 Fairfi eld University Men’s Lacrosse

Game 1: Fairfi eld vs. Holy CrossNeubauer Nets Four, Stags Edged by Holy Cross on Opening Day at Rafferty Stadium

Sperry records hat trick, including the fi rst two goals in Rafferty Stadium history

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team took the fi eld at Rafferty Stadium for the fi rst time on Saturday afternoon, opening the 2015 season against visiting Holy Cross. Before an Opening Day crowd of 2,365, the Stags were clipped by the Crusaders, 10-9, on a goal with 3:40 left to play.

TJ Neubauer scored a game-high four goals for Fairfi eld (0-1), including three in the second half. The fi rst two goals in Rafferty Stadium history went to Tristan Sperry, who recorded a fi rst-half hat trick for the Stags in addition to two assists. Colin McLinden and Dave Fleming also found the back of the net, with helpers dished out by Drew Federico, Drew Murray and Charlie Schnider.

On the other half of the fi eld, Bryan Barry scooped up four ground balls, and Max Buchanan registered a pair of ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Brad Nordstrom made nine saves between the posts in his collegiate debut.

Louis DiGiacomo and Will Fox share duties in the faceoff ‘X’ and each posted an above-.500 mark. DiGiacomo went 8-for-14 on faceoffs, and Fox was 5-for-9 in his fi rst game with the Stags.

Holy Cross (1-0) was led by fi ve points from Sean Wilkinson, who scored three goals and distributed two as-sists. Logan LeBlond and Marc Buermann each scored twice for the Crusaders. Michael Ortlieb made 13 saves, including fi ve in the fourth quarter, in the winning effort for the visitors.

The fi rst goal at Rafferty Stadium came just 72 seconds into the contest when Sperry buried an unassisted marker to stake the Stags to a 1-0 lead. The senior attackman struck again at the 11:17 mark of the opening frame to double the advantage to 2-0.

The Stags extended the lead further when Federico connected with a streaking Fleming for a one-timer that staked Fairfi eld to a 3-0 edge midway through the opening quarter. Holy Cross would get on the board on Wilkinson’s fi rst goal of the day, but Fairfi eld rebuilt a three-goal margin as McLinden struck at the 5:43 mark with what proved to be the fi nal tally of the opening frame.

It was Wilkinson again who got the Crusaders’ offense going with a goal to cut into the lead, but the Stags again responded. This time it was a two-goal spurt as Sperry completed his hat trick and then connected with fellow co-captain Neubauer, who scored his fi rst goal of the season to stretch the edge to 6-2. The Crusaders answered with the fi nal goal of the second frame at the 7:36 mark, as both defenses locked down in the quar-ter. The fi rst half expired with the Stags doubling-up Holy Cross by a 6-3 count.

In the third quarter, Wilkinson and LeBlond each buried a goal in the opening minutes to trim the Stags’ lead to 6-5. At that point, Fairfi eld capitalized on a man-up situation as Neubauer turned a feed from Schnider into his second goal of the day. After Buermann struck for the Crusaders, another man-up opportunity led to another Stags’ marker. Once again it was Neubauer fi nishing the play on the fi rst assist of Murray’s career and extending the Fairfi eld advantage to 8-6.

However, the Crusaders struck twice in the fi nal ticks of the quarter as Buermann at 1:38 and LeBlond with just fi ve seconds remaining knotted the score at 8-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

Neubauer continued to come through in the clutch for the Stags, as he broke the deadlock at the 13:40 mark of the fi nal quarter. This time, it was Sperry helping out on the goal to complete his fi ve-point performance on Opening Day.

The newly-built 9-8 cushion, however, marked the last goal that the Stags would score on the day. A Clay Haar-mann goal at the 6:47 mark tied the score, and Terry McKenna’s tally with 3:40 to play gave the Crusaders their fi rst and only lead of the contest at 10-9.

Nordstrom made a pair of key saves down the stretch to keep the Stags within striking distance, but Fairfi eld was unable to gain another possession on the offensive end as the fi nal seconds expired.

Game 2: Fairfi eld at ProvidenceFairfi eld Surges Past Host Providence, 10-6Eight players score goals in the Stags’ fi rst win of 2015

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the third quarter to power past host Providence, 10-6, on Wednesday afternoon. Eight Stags scored in the club’s fi rst win of 2015, including two goals apiece from Dave Fleming and Tristan Sperry.

The Stags’ (1-1) six-goal run broke a 4-4 tie as the defense kept Providence off the board for more than 20 minutes of game time spanning the third and fourth quarters.

In addition to a pair of markers for Fleming and Sperry, Joe Rodrigues, Bryan Barry, Charlie Schnider, Colin McLinden, Drew Murray and Drew Federico all scored for the Stags. McLinden also dealt a pair of assists as a part of a three-point day.

With his effort, McLinden moves into a tie for 10th all-time at Fairfi eld with 111 career points.

An assist for Sperry capped his three-point performance, with assists also coming from Schnider and Murray.

The goals from Rodrigues and Murray were the fi rst of their respective collegiate careers, and Schnider’s tally was his fi rst as a Stag after netting three goals for Ohio State from 2013-14.

Will Fox turned in a strong showing in the faceoff ‘X’, winning 12 of his 16 attempts and scooping up six ground balls. Sperry picked up three ground balls, while Barry, Federico and TJ Neubauer had three apiece.

Defensively, Brad Nordstrom earned his fi rst collegiate victory with 10 saves. The freshman goalkeeper also snagged a pair of ground balls. Max Buchanan and Conor Barr helmed the defense and each caused two turnovers.

Providence (0-1) was led by a hat trick from Greg FitzMaurice, who also handed out an assist. Peter Badgley made 15 saves for the hosts.

The Friars claimed the fi rst two goals of the afternoon, but the Stags quickly answered to knot the contest at 2-2. Rodrigues put Fairfi eld on the board with his fi rst career goal – a man-up tally assisted by Sperry – and Barry found the back of the net off a feed from Murray round out the fi rst-quarter scoring.

In the second frame, Providence once again started the scoring with a man-up goal less than two minutes into the quarter. Once again, the Stags provided a quick response in the form of Schnider’s unassisted goal to tie the contest at 3-3. The fi nal of the half staked Fairfi eld to its fi rst lead of the contest as Fleming banged home a pass from McLinden to send the Stags into the locker room with a 4-3 edge.

After the Friars tied the score just 67 seconds into the third quarter, the Stags broke the game open with six unanswered goals to cap the stanza. Sperry scored twice during the stretch, which also included goals from McLinden, Fleming, Murray and Federico.

Fairfi eld’s 10-4 advantage held deep into the fourth quarter, as the Stags kept Providence off the board for a total of 21:59 of clock time. The Friars ended the drought with 6:54 to play and tacked on another goal in the fi nal 90 seconds of action, but the lead proved insurmountable as the Stags claimed a 10-6 road triumph.

The Stags outshot the Friars, 42-25, and held a 31-23 advantage in ground balls. Fairfi eld won 13-of-19 total faceoffs and committed 10 turnovers while forcing 16 Providence miscues.

Game 3: Fairfi eld vs. ManhattanSchnider, McLinden Lead Men’s Lacrosse Past Manhattan, 15-4

Neubauer adds hat trick in non-conference win at Rafferty Stadium

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Charlie Schnider racked up six points and Colin McLinden distributed four assists to lead the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team past Manhattan, 15-4, on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Rafferty Stadium. TJ Neubauer added a hat trick for the Stags in the non-conference victory.

Schnider paced Fairfi eld with fi ve goals. Neubauer notched an assist to go along with his trio of goals, and Tristan Sperry scored two goals and handed out three assists.

Rounding out the Stags’ offense were goals from Joe Rodrigues, Dave Fleming, Cameron Parker, Drew Federico and Drew Murray. Parker’s tally was the fi rst of his collegiate career.

In the midfi eld, Neubauer and Louis DiGiacomo each scooped up fi ve ground balls. DiGiacomo was also a force in the faceoff ‘X’ with 11 wins on 15 attempts. Will Fox added a 4-for-5 day in the ‘X’.

Andrew Eidenshink caused three turnovers with three ground balls in the defensive zone, while Brad Nordstrom made four saves en route to victory. Tyler Behring and Daniel Costa also both saw time between the posts in relief of the freshman netminder.

As a unit, the Stags outshot Manhattan, 50-14, and picked up 38 ground balls to the Jaspers’ 18. Fairfi eld committed 12 turnovers while pressuring the visitors into 20 miscues.

The Stags never trailed in the contest, as Schnider picked up the fi rst two goals of the afternoon. Neubauer got into the scoring act shortly thereafter and, following a Manhattan goal by Nick Stutler, Schnider completed his fi rst-quarter hat trick and staked Fairfi eld to a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes of action.

Though the Jaspers struck fi rst in the second quarter to cut the defi cit to 4-2, Fairfi eld would light the lamp three times in the fi nal fi ve minutes of the half. Schnider started the streak with his fourth goal of the day, and Sperry added two tallies less than three minutes apart to send the Stags into the locker room holding a 7-2 lead.

A man-up goal just 83 seconds into the second half capped Schnider’s scoring day, and was followed less than one minute later by a goal from Murray. After Kevin Cox scored to end the Jaspers’ scoring drought at 18:12 of game time, Fairfi eld quickly took that goal back on a Federico goal. Neubauer tacked on two more – including a man-up goal – to extend the lead to 12-3 before a late Jaspers’ goal ended the third quarter with Fairfi eld in front, 12-4.

Three more Stags’ goals accounted for all of the fourth quarter scoring as markers from Rodrigues, Fleming and Parker capped off the 15-4 triumph.

After his four-assist performance, McLinden stands in ninth place all-time in Fairfi eld lacrosse history with 115 career points. The senior midfi elder-turned-attackman had six helpers in the Stags’ overtime win at Yale last season.

The contest was originally scheduled to be played this evening in Riverdale, N.Y., but the forecast of inclement weather moved the action to Rafferty Stadium for an 11 a.m. outing.

Game 4: Fairfi eld at Stony BrookStony Brook Holds off Men’s Lacrosse for 10-9 Decision

McLinden racks up seven points for the Stags

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Colin McLinden matched his career high with seven points, but the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team was held off by host Stony Brook in a 10-9 contest on Saturday afternoon on Long Island. McLinden netted a hat trick to go along with four assists for the Stags.

In addition to matching his career best – established in a win over Yale on March 8, 2014 – McLinden also moves into eighth place on Fairfi eld’s all-time scoring list with 122 career points.

Fairfi eld (2-2) also got a pair of goals from Jake Knostman as well as single tallies from Charlie Schnider, TJ Neubauer, Joe Rodrigues and Tristan Sperry. Schnider also dished out an assist.

Will Fox went 13-for-18 at the faceoff ‘X’. The freshman is the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week for his work as the Stags’ primary faceoff man.

Neubauer added seven ground balls for Fairfi eld, and Tristan Sperry scooped up fi ve. Brad Nordstrom helmed the net for the Stags and made nine saves.

The Seawolves netted the fi rst two goals of the contest and maintained the lead the rest of the way. Neubauer got the Stags on the board and then McLinden found the back of the net as Fairfi eld faced a 5-2 defi cit early in the second quarter. A Schnider tally capped the fi rst-half scoring as the Stags headed to the locker room facing a 6-3 defi cit.

Knostman opened the second-half scoring on a feed from McLinden, but Stony Brook netted the next two markers to rebuild an 8-4 edge. At that point, Sperry banged home a marker and McLinden added a pair to pull the Stags within one at 8-7 with 12:54 to play.

The Stags would pull no closer, however, as the Seawolves answered with a marker and, after Knostman’s second goal, responded again to take a 10-8 edge. Rodrigues scored on a Schnider assist just before the fi nal horn as Stony Brook held on to take a 10-9 decision.

Fairfi eld outshot the Seawolves, 38-24, and held a 34-23 lead in ground balls. The Stags were edged in turn-overs, committing 15 while pressuring the hosts into 13 miscues.

Mike Rooney led Stony Brook with a goal and seven assists, and Chris Hughes tallied a hat trick.

Game 5: Fairfi eld at No. 6 YaleMen’s Lacrosse Falls at No. 6 Yale in Overtime, 9-8

Knostman and Neubauer each score twice, Sperry racks up four points against top-10 foe

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second consecutive season, 60 minutes wasn’t enough to decide the clash between the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team and Yale University. In the 2015 edition of the in-state contest, it was host Yale – ranked as high sixth in the national polls – escaping with a 9-8 victory.

Fairfi eld, which claimed a 12-11 overtime win over Yale last spring, got two goals apiece from midfi elders TJ Neubauer and Jake Knostman this afternoon. Tristan Sperry, Charlie Schnider, Joe Rodrigues and Drew Federico also scored for the Stags (2-3).

Sperry also handed out three assists to complete a four-point day, and Colin McLinden distributed his team-leading 11th helper of the season.

On the other side of the fi eld, Tom Lukacovic picked up a team-best four ground balls for Fairfi eld. Brad Nordstrom made a career-high 12 saves in goal against the top-10 Bulldogs.

For Yale, it was Eric Scott who scored the fi rst and last goals of the afternoon. His game-winner came at the 1:01 mark of the overtime session.

Scott and Ben Reeves scored the only goals of the fi rst quarter, staking Yale to a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. Michael Bonacci added a tally in the second frame before Neubauer put the Stags on the board at 13:10 in the stanza. The margin quickly grew back to three, however, as Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Eric Natale uncorked a ball from deep in his own territory that found the back of the net to run the score to 4-1 in favor of the hosts with 12:47 left in the half.

At that point, the Stags went on a run to erase the fi rst-half defi cit. The surge began with a man-up goal from Knostman assisted by Sperry to cut the gap to 4-2. Sperry would assist on next two goals as well, fi nding Neubauer followed by Rodrigues to knot the contest at 4-4.

In the closing minute of the half, Federico buried an acrobatic goal to give Fairfi eld its fi rst lead of the day at 5-4. However, Yale went on to win the ensuing draw, and Reeves scored with just 5.7 seconds left in the half. The marked ended a nearly 13-minute scoring drought for Yale and sent the clubs into the locker room knotted at 5-5.

The Stags and Bulldogs traded goals throughout the third quarter. Schnider started the back-and-forth action with a swim move to evade a defender followed by an unassisted goal at the 13:05 mark. After Bonacci responded for Yale, Sperry wrapped around the net and buried one to reclaim a one-goal lead – this time at 7-6.

The trend continued with a Michael Keasey goal for Yale to tie it up for a fourth time before Knostman’s second of the day capped the third-quarter scoring and set the Stags into the fi nal frame with an 8-7 edge.

The only tally of the fourth quarter came just 52 seconds into the stanza. Yale’s Jeff Cimbalista sent home a man-up goal at the 14:08 mark to knot the game at 8-8. Nordstrom made three saves in the period to preserve the stalemate, while the Stags’ defense fought off a late man-down situation and forced a Bulldogs’ shot clock violation in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game into an extra session.

After a scoreless trip each way to begin overtime, Yale struck on its second possession. Scott’s second goal of the day – assisted by Bonacci at the 1:01 mark – gave the 9-8 win to the Bulldogs to extend their unblemished record to 5-0.

All three of the Stags’ early-season losses have come by a one-goal margin. Fairfi eld has also earned victories over Providence and Manhattan in the opening stages of the 2015 campaign.

Game 6: Fairfi eld at BucknellMen’s Lacrosse Edged at Bucknell, 10-9

Schnider collects four points for the Stags

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Action at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium came down to the fi nal seconds as the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team was on the short side of a 10-9 decision at Bucknell. Charlie Schnider totaled four points for the Stags in the one-goal defeat.

Schnider scored a goal and dished out three assists for Fairfi eld. Tristan Sperry added two goals and an assist to surpass the century mark for his career with 102 points. TJ Neubauer also scored a pair of the Stags to improve his team-leading total to 12 goals on the season.

Adding single tallies for the Stags were Joe Rodrigues, Jake Knostman, Dave Fleming and Conor Dalton.

Knostman also distributed two assists, with helpers also coming off the sticks of Colin McLinden and Drew Federico.

In the midfi eld, Neubauer collected four ground balls to lead the Stags to a 28-23 advantage in the category. Both faceoff specialists won better than 50 percent of their draws as Will Fox went 7-of-13 and Louis DiGiacomo was 6-of-10 at the ‘X’.

Goalkeeper Brad Nordstrom established a new career high with 13 saves and picked up a personal-best three ground balls. The freshman netminder also accounted for one of the Stags’ three caused turnovers.

Bucknell was led by three goals from Alex Ryan. The eventual game-winner came from the crosse of Ryan Joseph.

Schnider opened the scoring for the Stags with an unassisted marker at 12:38 in the fi rst quarter before Bucknell answered to knot the score at 1-1. At that point, the Stags ran off three straight tallies to take a 4-1 lead midway through the second quarter. Fleming, Dalton and Rodrigues accounted for the fi nishers with assists racked up by Sperry, Knostman and McLinden.

The Bison ended the run with a Ryan goal with 6:27 left in the second period, but Fairfi eld answered just 39 seconds later as Neubauer wound up and fi red a shot past Bucknell’s Sam Grinberg to extend the Stags’ lead to 5-2. However, Bucknell scored three times in the fi nal fi ve minutes of the half to send the game into the intermission knotted up at 5-5.

The hosts stretched their run to four straight goals, netting the fi rst marker of the second half to claim a 6-5 edge. But in a matter of less than two minutes, the Stags capitalized on a pair of man-up situations to retake the lead at 7-6. Sperry fi nished off both goals courtesy of assists by Schnider and Knostman.

At that point, it was Bucknell’s turn to rattle off a pair with Ryan and Doyle burying shots to claim an 8-7 lead. Playing from behind once again, Fairfi eld got the equalizer in the fi nal minute of the third quarter. Knostman took a feed from Schnider and bounced one home to tie the game at 8-8 heading into the fourth frame.

The Bison struck fi rst in the fi nal stanza on an unassisted Doyle goal with 10:14 to play. The advantage held to just past the midway point, while Federico found Neubauer, who rocketed home his second goal of the day to tie the score for the sixth and fi nal time at 9-9 with 7:27 remaining.

Nordstrom made three saves to preserve the tie during the ensuing stretch of action before Joseph sent home a marker with 1:51 to play to give the lead back to Bucknell at 10-9. Trailing by a single goal in the fi nal minute, Fairfi eld had several scoring opportunities but was unable to convert as time expired.

Grinberg – the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week – was pulled in the second quarter after ceding fi ve goals while making four saves in 24:53 of action. Brac McKee took over in net for the Bison and earned the win with six saves to his credit.

All four of the Stags’ losses have come by a single goal, including Saturday’s overtime defeat at No. 6 Yale. Fairfi eld has recorded wins over Providence and Manhattan during the non-conference portion of the schedule.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A 5-0 run in the fi rst quarter and a 4-0 stretch in the second staked the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team to a seven-goal halftime lead, and the Stags fended off a late Colgate run to claim a 13-9 victory at Rafferty Stadium. Alex Corboy tallied the fi rst four goals of his Fairfi eld career, while Colin McLinden and Tristan Sperry each posted four points of their own in the victory.

The home win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Stags (3-4), who have been on the short side of four one-goal defeats in 2015.

Corboy, who scored 20 goals as a freshman at Providence College last spring, found the back of the net for the Stags twice in the fi rst quarter and twice in the second to account for his four goals. McLinden scored two goals and dished out a pair of assists, while Sperry had one goal and distributed three helpers. Sperry leads the Stags with 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) this season, and McLinden has totaled 21 points (seven goals, team-high 14 assists).

With 106 career points, Sperry is seven shy of entering Fairfi eld’s all-time top-10. McLinden currently sits in eighth place on the career points ledger with 128.

Charlie Schnider added two goals and an assist for Fairfi eld, and TJ Neubauer buried his team-best 13th goal of the season in addition to six ground balls in the midfi eld. A pair of sophomores got into the scoring act off the bench as Jake Knostman scored twice, and Dave Fleming added his sixth goal of the spring.

At the other end of the fi eld, Max Buchanan picked up a career-high six ground balls. Brad Nordstrom made 11 saves – his third consecutive game with double-digit stops – to record the win between the posts.

Will Fox led the way at the faceoff ‘X’. The two-time CAA Lacrosse Rookie of the Week went 10-of-17 (.588) with fi ve ground balls.

Sperry started the scoring on the day with an unassisted tally at 12:07 in the fi rst quarter and, after a Colgate equalizer, McLinden beat the keeper to stake the Stags to a lead that they would not relinquish. The marker started Fairfi eld on a fi ve-goal run that also included two Corboy tallies as well as goals from Fleming and Knostman. The Raiders would add a late goal to end the stretch, but the Stags remained in front with a 6-2 lead at the close of the fi rst quarter.

Ryan Walsh’s 10th goal of the season for Colgate came just 52 seconds into the second quarter, but it would be the last time that the visitors found the back of the net in the fi rst half. Corboy fi nished off a pair of passes from McLinden in a span of less than two minutes to extend the lead to 8-3, at which point the Stags’ midfi eld started to fi re away. First, Schnider uncorked a pass from Drew Federico at 4:34 to fi nish off his 11th marker of the spring. Then, with 40 seconds remaining in the half, Neubauer took a pass from Schnider and smoked the ball past the keeper to send the Stags into the locker room with a 10-3 advantage. Neubauer’s goal was the third and fi nal time in the half that Fairfi eld would score with the 30-second shot clock winding down.

Nearly 10 minutes of the third quarter ticked away without a goal before Knostman converted a Sperry feed at 5:03 to stretch the lead to 11-4. Following a Colgate goal at 2:18, the Stags carried an 11-4 advantage into the fourth and fi nal frame.

McLinden started the scoring in the last stanza with an unassisted tally at the 13:29 mark. However, that goal would be Fairfi eld’s last for over 12 minutes as the Colgate offense began to click. The Raiders accounted for the next fi ve markers, cutting the defi cit to 12-9 with 1:32 to play.

After Fox came away with the ensuing faceoff, the Stags capitalized on Colgate’s pressure defense to end the run and put the game away. With goalkeeper Jake Danehy vacating the net in an attempt to cause a turnover, Schnider buried a shot into the empty cage with exactly one minute left on the clock to round out the score at its eventual fi nal of 13-9.

Brandon Burke started in goal for Colgate and allowed 12 goals with six saves over 56:09. Danehy completed the effort with Schnider’s goal charged against him as the only shot he faced.

The Raiders outshot the Stags, 36-27, and held a 31-27 edge in ground balls. Faceoffs were nearly split down the middle as Colgate won 13 and Fairfi eld came away with 12 from the ‘X’.

Game 8: Fairfi eld at Massachusetts-LowellNine Stags Score Goals in 11-5 Win at UMass-Lowell

Eleven student-athletes recorded points in the non-conference road victory

LOWELL, Mass. – The Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team used goals from nine different student-athletes to put together an 11-5 win at Massachusetts-Lowell on March 17. Jake Knostman and TJ Neubauer each scored twice for the Stags, while Charlie Schnider contributed a goal and two assists.

The Stags, who improve to 4-4 with their second consecutive win, also got single goals from Tristan Sperry, Alex Corboy, Nick Guida, Joe Rodrigues, Conor Dalton and Liam DaRos. The fourth quarter, man-up goal for DaRos was the fi rst of his collegiate career.

Colin McLinden helped to set up the Fairfi eld offense with two assists. Dalton, Guida and Drew Murray also handed out assists in the non-conference triumph.

Louie DiGiacomo was dominant at the ‘X’ against the River Hawks, winning 10-of-12 faceoffs to keep the Stags on the attack. Joe DeLasho went a perfect 3-of-3 late in the contest.

Defensively, Tyler Behring made the start in goal and registered six saves while picking up six ground balls – both career bests. Daniel Costa completed the effort and stopped one shot. Behring and Matt Borda each caused a pair of River Hawks’ turnovers, and Tom Lukacovic collected three ground balls on the defensive end.

The only two goals of the fi rst quarter came within the game’s opening fi ve minutes. Knostman started the scoring with an unassisted tally at 12:25, and Dalton buried an unassisted goal at 10:13 in the frame.

After the River Hawks got on the board at 12:00 in the second quarter, the Stags embarked on the lengthy run that would put the contest out of the reach. The next six goals all went to Fairfi eld during a span of 29:53 that included the entire third quarter.

Sperry started the run, followed by the fi rst two man-up goals from Neubauer – both assisted by Schnider. Corboy also would convert a McLinden pass into his fi fth goal of the spring to send the Stags into the locker room with a 6-1 lead.

The run continued out of the intermission as Dalton found Knostman, who buried his second of the day for the only goal of the third quarter. Schnider’s unassisted goal at 12:31 in the fourth quarter ended the run with the Stags pulling away with an 8-1 advantage.

Fairfi eld would add three more tallies in the fourth frame courtesy of Rodrigues, DaRos and Guida. The host River Hawks notched a trio of goals late in the game to round out the 11-5 fi nal score.

The Stags outshot UML, 46-21, and scooped up 29 ground balls to the River Hawks’ 16. Led by DiGiacomo, Fairfi eld won 14-of-18 faceoffs.

Keenan Koswin scored two goals for Massachusetts-Lowell (1-6). Giles Ober made 10 saves as the home team’s starting goalkeeper.

Game 9: Fairfi eld vs. No. 20 VillanovaStags Lock Down No. 20 Villanova for 11-4 Win on Dedication Day at Rafferty Stadium

Behring turns away 16 shots, Neubauer scores four goals

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fueled by 16 saves from goalkeeper Tyler Behring, the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team earned an 11-4 win over No. 20 Villanova on Dedication Day at Rafferty Stadium. TJ Neubauer led the Stags’ offense with four goals in the victory, which was broadcast live to a nationwide audience on ESPN3 and SNY.

With its third consecutive victory, Fairfi eld as now defeated at least one ranked opponent (in the USILA Coaches’ Poll) in each of Head Coach Andy Copelan’s seven seasons at the helm.

Behring’s 16 saves mark a career high as well as the most by a Fairfi eld goalkeeper since Jack Murphy turned away 17 UMBC offerings on March 2, 2013. The sophomore netminder also collected three ground balls. After falling behind 2-0 early in the fi rst quarter, Behring and the Stags’ defense kept Villanova off the board until two minutes into the fourth frame – a span of 40:43 of game time. Matt Borda led the unit in front of Behring with a career-best nine ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers.

Neubauer’s four goals extended his team-leading total to 19 on the season. Tristan Sperry, who leads the Stags with 30 points, scored two goals and distributed two assists this evening while gathering four ground balls Charlie Schnider added three points with a goal and two helpers.

Seven Stags scored in total in the contest with Drew Federico, Colin McLinden, Jake Knostman and Joe Rodrigues each adding single tallies in the win.

Villanova’s fi rst two goals came within the fi rst 6:17 of play as the Wildcats grabbed a 2-0 lead with 8:43 left in the opening frame. The Stags responded with Schnider goal that started the team on what amounted to a run of eight consecutive markers. Fairfi eld carried a 5-2 lead into the half and an 8-2 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Jack Curran fi nally ended the drought for Villanova with a goal at 13:00 in the fourth quarter, but the Stags’ defense remained on point and the 8-3 advantage held through the midway point of the stanza. Neubauer completed his hat trick at 6:54 and, after the Wildcats snuck one more through, Neubauer and Rodrigues capped the effort with two goals in a span of 32 seconds to round out the 11-4 fi nal score.

The Stags were outshot by the visitors, 40-28. Fairfi eld held a 27-21 advantage in ground balls and committed 15 turnovers while pressuring the Wildcats into 11 miscues.

The day began with a 12-3 win for Fairfi eld women’s lacrosse over Manhattan in the Stags’ 2015 MAAC opener. The offi cial blessing and dedication of Rafferty Stadium – a new state-of-the-art facility at the University – was held in between ends of the doubleheader.

Up next, Fairfi eld begins CAA Lacrosse play for the fi rst time next Saturday, March 28 at defending champion Drexel. The Stags will also play at Massachusetts on Saturday, April 4 before beginning a three-game, regular-season-ending homestand against CAA Lacosse foes with a visit from Towson on Saturday, April 11.

Game 10: Fairfi eld at DrexelFairfi eld Tops Host Drexel, 7-4, in Program’s First-Ever CAA Contest

Three Stags tally three points apiece against defending CAA champs

PHILADELPHIA – The Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team began its fi rst-ever season of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition with a 7-4 with at defending league champion Drexel on Saturday afternoon. Drew Federico, TJ Neubauer and Tristan Sperry each totaled three points for the Stags.

Fairfi eld (6-4, 1-0 CAA) turned in another strong defensive effort in its fourth consecutive victory. The Stags, who entered the day ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowed just four goals for the second straight contest. Fairfi eld last ceded only eight goals during a two-game stretch in wins over Harvard (8-4) and Manhattan (13-4) during the 2001 campaign.

Coming off of a week in which he was named the NCAA.com Defensive Player of the Week and CAA Player of the Week, Tyler Behring matched his career high of 16 saves established one week ago against No. 20 Villanova. The sophomore goalkeeper also picked up three ground balls to move to 3-0 in three career starts.

Also on the defensive end, Conor Barr caused three Drexel (4-6, 0-1 CAA) turnovers.

Offensively, Neubauer and fellow junior midfi elder Charlie Schnider each scored two goals while single tallies for Fairfi eld came from Federico, Sperry and Colin McLinden. Sperry also dished out two assists to move into 10th place all-time at Fairfi eld in both career points (114) and career assists (47). Federico handed out two helpers as well, and Neubauer dished out an assist to round out the scoring.

The only goal of the fi rst quarter came from Sperry, who buried an unassisted marker just 61 seconds into the contest to stake the Stags to a 1-0 advantage. Drexel threatened late in the period, but Behring’s save at the horn preserved the shutout through the opening frame of action.

The hosts ended their 17-minute scoring drought with an equalizer from Jules Raucci that knotted the game at 1-1. However, the goal would be Drexel’s only score of the fi rst half, and Fairfi eld found the back of the net once more before the intermission. With the period winding down, Neubauer connected with Schnider, who buried his 14th goal of the spring to send the Stags into the locker room with a 2-1 advantage.

Just as they did in the fi rst quarter, the Stags needed less than two minutes to get on the board in the third frame. This time it was Neubauer fi nishing a pass from Federico to extend the lead to 3-1. However, the hosts needed just 49 seconds to respond as a Ryan Belka goal cut the Fairfi eld advantage to 3-2 at the 12:38 mark in the period. Neubauer and Belka would trade goals again in the third, with Sperry notching the assist on Neubauer’s goal for Fairfi eld, and the Stags’ 4-3 lead held into the fourth quarter.

The Stags struck fi rst in the fi nal frame. Federico fought his way toward the crease and fi red past Granito to extend the Fairfi eld advantage to 5-3 with 9:57 to play. An insurance marker came with 3:09 left, this time with Federico providing the assist and Schnider fi nishing the job. Frank Fusco notched a late goal for Drexel before McLinden found the back of the net in the closing seconds to round out the score at its eventual fi nal of 7-4.

The Dragons outshot the Stags, 35-23, and held the edge in ground balls by a 27-26 count. In addition to Belka’s two goals, Chris Federick doled out a pair of assists for the hosts.

Game 11: Fairfi eld at MassachusettsStags Extend Winning Streak to Five with 10-9 Victory at UMass

Neubauer nets four, Knostman adds hat trick in CAA road win

AMHERST, Mass. – The Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team won its fi fth consecutive game and remained at unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with a 10-9 victory at Massachusetts. TJ Neubauer scored four goals and Jake Knostman added a hat trick in the win.

Fairfi eld (7-4, 2-0 CAA) also got single markers coming from Colin McLinden, Drew Federico and Charlie Schnider. The Stags emerged victorious in a one-goal contest for the fi rst time this spring after landing on the short end of a one-goal decision in all four of their early-season losses.

McLinden and Neubauer each collected three ground balls, while Max Buchanan helmed the back row with four. Tyler Behring made 12 saves with a pair of ground balls to improve to 4-0 in goal.

UMass outshot Fairfi eld, 35-32, and held a 29-24 advantage in ground balls. Buddy Carr was the lone Minuteman to net multiple goals, and Zach Oliveri made eight saves between the posts for UMass.

The clubs traded goals for the fi rst period of action, starting with Federico’s unassisted marker at 11:56. After the hosts got on the board, Oliveri saved an initial shot from Neubauer but couldn’t maintain control of the ball. The orb trickled home as Neubauer was credited with the go-ahead marker.

The Minutemen scored the equalizer once again, but McLinden had an answer for the Stags. Will Fox, who was 9-for-13 at the ‘X’ on the day, won the ensuing faceoff as Barr tracked down the ground ball to stake Fairfi eld with a possession. After a timeout, McLinden shook a pair of defenders and made his way unmarked toward the cage, where he put home the fi nal goal of the quarter with 1:13 to go. The Stags fought off a late UMass charge, holding the Minutemen without a shot as time expired to preserve the 3-2 advantage.

Just 59 seconds into the second quarter, UMass knotted the score again on a goal from Gianni Bianchin. The Minutemen then claimed their fi rst lead of the game when Brendan Hegarty collected a ground ball off a Behring save and converted to put the hosts in front, 4-3.

Faced with a defi cit for the fi rst time, the Stags went back-to-back to regain the lead. First, Neubauer found the back of the net at 3:43, and Knostman followed just 35 seconds later to stake Fairfi eld to the 5-4 lead that it would eventually carry into the intermission.

The Stags started the third quarter with possession (due to a UMass penalty) and needed just 19 seconds to get on the board on Knostman’s second of the day. Neubauer would add another at 12:50 in the third, and Knostman then completed his hat trick as Fairfi eld quickly opened up an 8-4 advantage.

That goal would cap the scoring for the third quarter as the Stags’ defense registered a scoreless quarter for the fourth consecutive game. In total, Fairfi eld kept the Minutemen off the board for a span of 33:26 before Nick Mariano and Kurt Hunziker each scored in a span of nine seconds to cut the defi cit in half at 8-6 early in the fourth frame.

Neubauer would respond for the Stags, completing his hat trick to extend the lead to 9-6 with 8:10 to play. After UMass answered, Schnider got on the board for Fairfi eld, bouncing one home to stretch the cushion back to 10-7 with 6:01 to go.

The Minutemen capitalized on an extra-man opportunity with a Buddy Carr goal, and then Carr struck again to trim the Fairfi eld lead to 10-9 with 2:52 remaining. UMass got a fi nal possession to net the equalizer, but Behring made a save with time winding down to preserve the one-goal victory.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The No. 20 Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team trimmed a three-goal defi cit to just one in the fourth quarter of the April 11 CAA clash with No. 16 Towson, but the visiting Tigers held off the Stags to claim an 8-7 decision at Rafferty Stadium. Seven different Stags accounted for Fairfi eld’s seven tallies in the loss.

Fairfi eld (7-5, 2-1 CAA) sees its fi ve-game winning streak come to an end after its fi fth one-goal loss of the spring. Towson (9-3, 3-0 CAA) stands as the only team with an unblemished CAA record.

The Stags’ seven goals came from Charlie Schnider, Dave Fleming, Joe Rodrigues, Tristan Sperry, Colin McLinden, TJ Neubauer and Jake Knostman. Fairfi eld also got assists from Neubauer, McLinden, Sperry and Drew Federico.

Schnider’s goal extended his streak to 11 consecutive games with a marker. Sperry, Schnider and McLinden have all tallied at least one point in every game this season.

Will Fox went 8-for-16 at the faceoff ‘X’ to keep the Stags’ offense on the fi eld. The three-time CAA Rookie of the Week also collected six ground balls in the midfi eld.

Goalkeeper Tyler Behring made nine saves for Fairfi eld. Also on the defensive end, Matt Borda and Conor Barr each caused two Towson turnovers.

Leading the way for the Tigers were Max Siskind scored two goals and Tyler White with 12 saves between the posts.

In a matchup featuring two of the top fi ve defenses in the nation, the scoring was furious in the opening quarter. Schnider started the action with a goal at 12:35, and the clubs traded goals for the remainder of the period. Fleming and Rodrigues also got on the board in the fi rst frame, and Sperry capped the stretch with a marker in the fi nal minute of the period to knot the game at 4-4.

The defensive style of play that many expected to see on Conway Field started in the second quarter. Towson would net a man-up tally just 42 seconds in the period, but that goal marked the only scoring in the period as the Tigers carried a 5-4 edge into the intermission. Behring made two saves and White stopped four shots in the frame.

Coming out of the locker room, neither team would score for nearly 10 minutes in the third before McLinden netted the equalizer at 5:18 to run the score to 5-5. The Stags’ defensive unit was less than fi ve seconds away from posting a scoreless quarter for the fi fth straight game, but Towson’s Justin Mabus scored just before the horn in the third to put the Tigers back on top, 6-5, entering the fourth quarter.

Mabus’ goal ended a drought of 29:14 for Towson – the fourth-longest stretch put together by the Fairfi eld defense this spring.

The Tigers went on a run to open the fi nal quarter, scoring twice in the fi rst fi ve minutes of the period to open up an 8-5 lead – the fi rst multiple-goal advantage for either team in the contest – with 10:36 to play.

However, Fairfi eld needed just 61 seconds to respond. Towson won the faceoff initially, but Neubauer caused a turnover and Sperry picked up the ground ball to stake the Stags with a possession in their attacking zone. Neubauer fi nished off the play at 9:35, burying his team-leading 26th goal to cut the defi cit to 8-6.

More than six minutes ticked off the clock before the next goal, with a save from each keeper and a turnover each way accounting for the scoring drought. The spell was broken by Knostman, who fi red home a man-up tally from a Sperry assist, trimming the margin in half to 8-7 with 3:17 to go.

Fox would come away with the ensuing faceoff, and Fairfi eld possessed the ball for all but the fi nal few seconds of the contest. However, Towson would fi ght off a 60-second man-up opportunity for the Stags, and White made two saves in the last minute of play as the visitors escaped Rafferty Stadium with an 8-7 decision.

Fairfi eld outshot Towson, 32-25, and the Tigers held a 24-21 edge in ground balls. The Stags won 8-of-19 faceoffs and committed 11 turnovers while pressuring Towson into 10 giveaways.

Game 13: Fairfi eld vs. DelawareSperry Sends Stags to 12-11 Double Overtime Win over Delaware

Senior’s game-winner caps a four-point day at Rafferty Stadium

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Tristan Sperry turned and fi red the game-winning goal one minute into the second overtime period as the Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team outlasted visiting Delaware, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon at Rafferty Stadium. Sperry and Drew Federico each tallied four points for the Stags in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win.

Sperry and Federico each scored two goals and handed out two assists for Fairfi eld (8-5, 3-1 CAA). The Stags also got a pair of markers from TJ Neubauer and Joe Rodrigues, who picked up an assist for a career-best three points on the day. Colin McLinden, Dave Fleming, Nick Guida and Jake Knostman also scored goals for Fairfi eld.

Neubauer also collected six ground balls, and Sperry picked up four as Fairfi eld battled to a 40-24 advantage in that category.

The Stags were dominant at the faceoff ‘X’, led by a 16-for-24 showing from Will Fox. The three-time CAA Rookie of the Week also hauled in 10 ground balls off of draws. Joe DeLasho added a 3-for-3 day in the circle to round out Fairfi eld’s 19-for-27 (.704) win percentage.

Tyler Behring made 10 saves between the posts with two ground balls. Also on the defensive end, Matt Borda picked up three ground balls and Tom Lukacovic recorded a pair of caused turnovers.

The Delaware (4-10, 0-4 CAA) offense was run through Beau Jones, who scored a goal to go along with fi ve assists. Brett Anton made 16 saves for the Blue Hens.

The squads traded the fi rst six goals of the day before McLinden’s tally in the closing seconds of the fi rst quarter staked the Stags to a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of action. The marker was also the start of a four-spurt with Federico, Neubauer and Rodrigues (man-up) all fi nding the back of the net to extend the Fairfi eld advantage to 7-3 with 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Though Delaware would net a pair before the intermission, the Stags maintained a 7-5 lead heading into the locker room.

Knostman and Sperry started the scoring in the third quarter, rebuilding the four-point cushion at 9-5. After a Blue Hens’ goal, Guida and Federico each struck as Fairfi eld carried an 11-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Delaware, however, closed the gap with fi ve goals in a span of 8:23 to knot the contest at 11-11 with 5:55 to play in regulation. Behring made two saves with the clock winding down to preserve the deadlock and send Fairfi eld to its second overtime contest of the season.

Behring made another save on the fi rst possession of the extra session and, after a turnover each way, Anton responded with a stop for Delaware. Fairfi eld would retain possession and manage two more shots, but neither one was on target as the clock expired.

Fox came up with his career-high 16th win at the faceoff ‘X’ and 10th ground ball to start the second overtime, and the Stags capitalized as Sperry netted the unassisted game-winner to give Fairfi eld a pivotal CAA victory by a fi nal score of 12-11.

The win comes in the Stags’ seventh one-goal game of the spring. It was also Fairfi eld’s fi rst double-overtime contest since a 9-8 win over Bryant in the 2012 campaign.

Game 14: Fairfi eld vs. HofstraStags Lockdown Hofstra to Clinch Share of CAA Regular Season Title

Fairfi eld victorious in eighth one-goal game of the spring

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfi eld University men’s lacrosse team scored the fi rst fi ve goals of Friday night’s regular season fi nale against visiting Hofstra, and the Stags’ defense made the early run stand up in a 5-4 win on Senior Night at Rafferty Stadium. With the victory, Fairfi eld clinches at least a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title.

Fairfi eld (9-5, 4-1 CAA) can win an outright regular season crown and earn the right to host next weekend’s CAA Championship if Towson loses at Drexel on Saturday afternoon. Regardless of seeding and location, the Stags’ semifi nal opponent on Thursday, April 30 will be Massachusetts. Fairfi eld topped the Minutemen, 10-9, on April 4 in Amherst. Also regardless of tomorrow’s result, Towson and Drexel will meet again in the other semifi nal matchup.

In tonight’s contest, fi ve different Stags scored as Fairfi eld jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the fi rst quarter. Tristan Sperry’s unassisted tally at 13:00 started the scoring followed by a Jake Knostman goal assisted by Drew Federico. Joe Rodrigues added a goal off a Sperry assist, TJ Neubauer sent home his team-leading 29th goal from a Colin McLinden feed, and Dave Fleming added an unassisted goal with 42 seconds left in the period to account for the 5-0 lead.

Though the Stags would not score again, Fairfi eld’s defense put forth one of its strongest efforts of the season, including two scoreless quarters. Hofstra (5-9, 2-3) scored three second-quarter goals to close the gap to 5-3 enter the intermission and, after neither team found the back of the net for a span of 30:48, cut the defi cit to 5-4 with 2:39 to go.

The Pride won the ensuing faceoff and embarked on what would prove to be the game’s fi nal possession. After a Tyler Behring save with 1:14 to go, Hofstra gathered the ground ball and, in the process, earned a 60-second extra-man opportunity. Playing short-handed, Fairfi eld forced two shots off target – the second of which was tracked down by Matt Borda to run out the clock on a 5-4 Stags’ victory.

Behring made 11 saves for the Stags to improve to 6-1 as a starting goalkeeper. In front of the Stags’ sophomore netminder, Borda picked up four ground balls and Conor Barr collected three.

Reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Will Fox turned in another strong showing at the faceoff ‘X’. Fox went 7-for-11 with six ground balls. Rounding out the effort was Joe DeLasho, who won one of his two draws attempted.

Tonight’s win marks the Stags’ second consecutive regular season title; Fairfi eld won the 2014 ECAC Lacrosse League regular season crown in the league’s fi nal year of existence. The victory is also the third game in which the Stags allowed a season-low four goals, the eighth (and fourth consecutive) game of the season decided by one goal and the lowest-scoring performance in a victory since defeating Air Force, 4-3, in 2010.
