The LeadFairfield University Men’s Lacrosse opens the 2018

season this Saturday, Feb. 10 on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium with a visit from Vermont. The Stags are looking to snap a three-game losing streak in both season openers and home openers when they take the field against the Catamounts.

The 2018 StagsThe Stags return 32 players from the 2017 squad,

including their top-four goal scorers and top-five point scorers. The leader in both of those categories was attackman Colin Burke, who netted 26 goals and 15 assists to accumulate 41 total points in his sophomore campaign en route to Second Team All-CAA honors.

Also on the offensive side, midfielder Joe Rodrigues had a breakout junior season. The Second Team All-CAA selection scored 13 of his 17 goals during CAA play and finished with 20 total points.

Fairfield also welcomes back two 2017 CAA All-Rookie Team picks from the attacking end in attackman Dylan Beckwith (16 goals, 12 assists) and midfielder Travis Ford (19 goals, 2 assists).

The veteran defensive unit includes seniors Nick Panara, Spencer Noonan, J.B. Smith and Riley Peters, juniors Sam Murphy and Adam Riestis, and sophomore Andrew Murrow, all of whom appeared in at least 10 games last spring.

Rounding out the key returners, the Stags return their two-headed monster at the faceoff ‘X’ in seniors Will Fox (85-of-159) and Joe DeLasho (74-of-149).

Coach Cope Says“As a coach, you tend to do a lot of reflection after a

5-9 season. But we’ve made a conscious effort to not make this year about last year. We’ve learned from it and identified things we need to continue to work on, but our focus is on 2018 and on a very tough opponent in Vermont coming to Rafferty Stadium this Saturday.”

Head Coach Andy Copelan10th Season • Bucknell ’032015 CAA Coach of the Year

The 2018 season is Andy Copelan’s 10th at the helm of the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team. He has posted a 78-58 (.574) record with the Stags and owns an 11-year NCAA Division I head coaching record of 96-73 (.568).

Copelan was named the program’s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan’s nine years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-rank foe in eight of his nine campaigns with the Stags.

Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game.

Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2015. In three seasons with CAA Lacrosse, the Stags have collected 20 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox ’18 and 2016 Rookie and co-Player of the Year nods for Colin Burke ’19.

Fairfield student-athletes also continue to gain the national and regional spotlight. Burke and TJ Neubauer ’16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions in 2016 with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season.

Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Neubauer was the highest-drafted Stag since Greg Downing ’07 was tabbed as the sixth overall pick and only First Round selection in program history in 2007. Neubauer was the 10th Stag during Copelan’s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks.

The 2014 edition of the club boasted a final record of 12-4, tying the program’s single-season wins mark. The campaign began with a record-setting 7-0 start and included the team’s first-ever ECAC Lacrosse League Regular Season Championship and a trip to ECAC Championship Game.

Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from 2011-14, including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan’s 2013 club recorded the Stags’ first-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team with an overtime triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. The Stags had 39 student-athletes earn All-ECAC Academic Team honors under Copelan’s tutelage, including a program-high 10 honorees in 2014. In 2015, Max Buchanan ’15 and Tristan Sperry ’15 collected USILA Scholar All-America distinctions following their senior campaigns.

Signs of the Stags’ return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program’s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in 2006. Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure.

Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan’s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program’s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth.

Scouting VermontThe Vermont Catamounts have already begun their 2018 season with a

2-0 southern road trip that featured a 12-6 win at Furman on Feb. 1 and an 11-3 triumph at Mercer on Feb. 3. The club was selected to finish third in the America East Preseason Poll.

Vermont went 5-8 last season (1-5 America East) without the services of vaunted All-America attackman Ian MacKay, who returned to the lineup last weekend after missing all of 2017 due to injury. MacKay totaled five goals and an assist in the wins over Furman and Mercer after pouring in a team-leading 70 points (42 goals, 28 assists) in 2016.

Liam Limoges matched MacKay’s efforts last weekend with five goals and an assist in his first collegiate action, and Rob Hudson rattled the cage four times in the pair of wins.

Charlie Erdmann resumed his post taking the majority of the draws for the Catamounts, finishing at 13-of-25 (.520), while freshman Alex Semler was an efficient 9-of-13 (.692) on the dot in relief.

All 120 minutes in the cage have gone to Nick Washuta, who made 15 saves to post a .625 save percentage and 4.50 goals against average. The native of Orono, Minnesota started 10 contests in the Vermont goal last spring, recording a .517 save percentage and 11.26 goals against average in 617:59 of work.

Coaching ConnectionsHead Coach Andy Copelan will be very familiar with his counterparts on

the opposing sidelines on Saturday. Copelan was an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for Vermont Head Coach Chris Feifs’ final two seasons as a student-athlete with the Terrapins, including a run to the Final Four in 2006. Copelan was also on Dave Cottle’s Maryland staff when current Vermont Assistant Coach Jake Bernhardt was recruited to play in College Park.

Climbing the ChartsThrough just two seasons with the Stags, Colin Burke

is establishing himself among the elite scorers in Fairfield Lacrosse history. Burke’s 72 career goals slot him at 12th in program annals while his 104 total points rank at 15th in Stags’ history. He is two goals and 18 total points shy of joining the all-time top 10 in both of those offensive categories.

When Burke reached the 100-point mark in Fairfield’s season-ending win over Delaware - his 31st career game - he became the fourth fastest to the milestone in program history.

Only Hall of Famers Matt Callaghan ’98, J.T. Groarke ’99 and Spencer Steele ’00 - the only three Stags to ever record 200 career points - hit the century mark in 30 games or fewer.

Fairfield vs. Ranked OpponentsFollowing last spring’s win over #15 Towson at

Rafferty Stadium, Fairfield has defeated at least one ranked opponent (in the USILA Coaches’ Poll) in eight of Andy Copelan’s nine prior seasons at the helm of the Stags. Highlighted by an upset win at #1 Denver during the 2013 season, the Stags have recorded 10 victories over ranked foes, including four wins over top-10 programs, during the Andy Copelan era beginning in 2009.

Fairfield challenged six USILA nationally-ranked opponents in 2017, the most since also playing a half-dozen ranked foes in 2005, and the 2018 slate features five teams that appear in the preseason edition of the USILA coaches’ poll.

Immediate ImpactsTwo rookies were key components to the Fairfield

attack in 2017. Dylan Beckwith (16g, 12a) and Travis Ford (19g, 2a) were the first rookie duo to each net 10 goals for the Stags since Dave Fleming scored 23 goals and Jake Knostman potted 15 markers in their freshman campaigns of 2014.

The Rookie RundownThe 2018 Fairfield roster includes 13 newcomers:

11 true freshman, redshirt freshman Tyler Lichter and sophomore transfer Jake Tymon. The baker’s dozen of new student-athletes represent every position on the field, as well as nine different states. The newcomers that traveled the farthest to get to campus are Max McGuire from Del Mar, California and Lucas Pedersen from Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Also of note, freshman Zane Friedt is the first-ever NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse player from the state of Idaho.

Not Settled in SixtyFairfield’s 11-10 double-overtime loss at in-state foe

#15 Yale last season marked the third time in the last four campaigns that the Stags and Bulldogs have played an extra session. At 66:46 of game time, the contest at Yale was the Stags’ longest outing since a triple-overtime win (69:53) at Hofstra on Feb. 28, 2012.
