When you successfully complete a programme at Lyceum, you will be awarded with a qualification. The level of qualification is dependent on the type of programme and its duration. Many students at Lyceum start with a certificate and work their way to a degree. As such we have structured our programme offerings to ensure students receive a full learning journey which rewards their efforts and progress.

CERTIFICATE: When you complete a short learning

programme (6 months) at Lyceum you will be awarded a certificate. This qualification indicates you have a basic level of higher education knowledge and proficiency in the specific field you have studied. Our certificates are desirable for time-conscious individuals who wish to upskill quickly and show their employer they have an

industry-relevant qualification to their name.

HIGHER CERTIFICATE:

Our higher certificates comprise of one or two years of study. They are aimed at equipping you with industry skills that you require to excel in your chosen field. Gain an elementary knowledge and display practical aptitude and critical thinking with a higher certificate.

ADVANCED CERTIFICATE: This qualification is primarily vocational or industry-oriented. It emphasises selected general principles together with more specific procedures and their application and/or technology transfer. The qualification provides students with a sound knowledge base in a particular field or discipline and the ability to apply their knowledge and skills to particular career or professional contexts, while equipping them to undertake more specialised and intensive learning.

DIPLOMA: A diploma is similar to a degree but

focuses primarily on industry-oriented or vocational training. Practical proficiency


is key here. You will gain in-depth specialisation and be prepared to directly apply your skills in the workplace. Lyceum diplomas can be completed in three or six years of studying. They form the springboard for students wishing to register for an advanced diploma.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA: An advanced diploma is less rigorous

than a degree but offers you a significant level of expertise within your industry of specialisation. This is aimed at professionals wishing to add to their knowledge-base and build further practical skills. Lyceum advanced diplomas take a year or two of studying making it a quick and effective means to achieve an additional qualification.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA: With a postgraduate diploma you can

make a meaningful contribution to society while opening doors to a wider variety of career paths. When you complete an advanced diploma you can register for a postgraduate diploma and earn this

qualification over one or two years of study. Develop a deeper understanding of your field of interest and build niche skills and specialised knowledge.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE: With a bachelor’s degree you will

demonstrate a mastery of theory and practical skills required for the workplace. A bachelor’s degree is often pivotal for entry into certain fields and critical for taking on a management position. Lyceum’s bachelor’s degrees are designed to create leaders that are able to use information to develop strong opinions and strategies to solve problems they encounter on the field and in the office. Our degrees take three or six years of studying to complete.

Learners are exposed to a range of outcomes that will ensure that they perform satisfactorily in senior positions in law enforcement agencies. Traffic crashes and crime pose a serious threat to society and often demand unique interventions from law enforcement practitioners.

Law enforcement supervisors have to master various skills if they want to develop into professional law enforcement practitioners. Apart from being supervisors they have to interact with many internal and external stakeholders such as civil engineers, senior government employees, and communities.

Law enforcement practitioners must:

Attain a proper understanding of the basic principles of research.

Acquire the knowledge to interpret data in order to identify issues that have to be remedied. Select the most appropriate responses from a wide range of possible interventions.

The deployment of law enforcement personnel and the effective utilisation of other resources is an important component of the work of law enforcement practitioners. Road policing is a function that is performed visibly and the performance of senior officers is severely compromised if they fail to internalise the intrinsic values of police practice. This programme will equip law enforcement practitioners with knowledge and skills that will empower them to outperform their peers. A centralised register of vehicle ownership and drivers licenses is vital for promoting an effective law enforcement system. Licensing services forms an integral component of road safety as it regulates the entry of vehicles and drivers into the public sphere. Licensing today is considered a science and licensing practitioners are required to equip themselves with the specialist knowledge and skills to render professional services.

With Lyceum’s accredited programmes, we offer a wide variety of options for the learner. Lyceum’s Faculty of Safety and Criminal Justice is at the forefront of training and education in the field of public safety. The role that disaster and safety management plays in the society cannot be underestimated. Major catastrophes worldwide, have accentuated the importance of disaster management i e. to safeguard and protect human lives and property. Occupational Health and Safety is also a sensitive issue, which in the industrialised environment precipitates certain risks that may affect negatively on society. The primary role of agencies and individuals specialising in disaster and safety management is to cope with disasters within a predetermined framework.

These agencies and individuals coordinate and plan for natural and man-made disasters. In essence, this means a working relationship with all relevant public sector agencies and non-governmental

organisations at national, provincial and local levels that include the police, emergency services, public health officials, charities and numerous private agencies. The development of professional practitioners in the field of disaster and safety management is a pre-requisite to ensure that the country copes adequately with disasters and industrialised incidents.

Many practitioners in both the private and public sectors may want to acquire a formal qualification in disaster and safety management to augment their performance in this specialised field. Disasters are an international phenomenon acquiring the assistance of all role players’ involved, irrespective culture and/or borders. Recent international disasters are a practical example of cross border assistance. Safety in the workplace is of equal importance, as the health and economical system of the country may be affected, especially in the event of major incidents.



This necessitates international cooperation, liaison and information sharing. This program is developed to focus on these issues.
