If you have been a U.S. citizen for 30 days, have been a resident of your election district for 30 days and will be 18 years old on election day, you may register. HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M ALREADY REGISTERED TO VOTE? If you are not sure about your voting status, call your county election board at least 30 days before the election to make sure that you are registered to vote. If it is determined that you are not registered, you can submit an new registration. DO I NEED TO RE-REGISTER? If you registered after June 1995 and have voted at least once every 8 years, your registration is permanent. You must re-register if you change your party, your name of if you have moved out of your election district. If you registered but have not voted in the last 2 presi- dential elections and have not responded to previous postcards sent by your county election board to your address of record, you need to re-register. HOW DO I REGISTER? You may register in person at your County Board of Elections or when applying for a driver’s license or picture ID from the Penn- sylvania Department of Transportation. You may also register by mail using an application form available at libraries, many public agencies, county voter registration offices or downloaded from the PA Board of Elections web site at www.dos.state.pa.us WHAT INFORMATION WILL I NEED TO REGISTER? You will need either a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license or the last four digits of your social security number to fill out the registration form. WHEN SHOULD I REGISTER? You may register one day after the previous election and up to 30 days before the next election. MUST I REGISTER IN A POLITICAL PARTY TO VOTE? No. You may vote for any issue or question on the ballot in the spring Primary but may not vote for candidates unless you have registered in their party. In the fall General Election you may vote for any candidate you wish. WHAT DOES A VOTER NEED BEFORE VOTING AT THE POLLING PLACE? If you are a first time voter at your polling place, you need an ID that has your current name and address on it. WHAT CAN I DO IF I COME TO THE POLLS AND MY REGISTRATION IS CHALLENGED? You will be able to cast a provisional ballot. HOW CAN I VOTE IF I CANNOT GET TO THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY? Call your county board of elections and request an absentee ballot applica- tion. Complete the application and return it directly to your county board of elections up to one week before the election. You will then be sent an official absentee ballot. The deadline for voted absentee ballots to be received by the county board of elections is 5 PM on the Friday before the election. If you are a house-bound disabled person, you may apply for a permanent absentee ballot. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I NEED ASSISTANCE WHILE VOTING? Voters who are disabled, have physical limitations, or have limited English profi- ciency can ask for assistance at the polling place or may call their county registrar’s office before election day to arrange for assistance.
