SummaryThe 2nd vehicle (after the CX-5 SUV) to be constructed under Mazda’s SkyActiv

design philosophy for light-weight, strength, and efficiency. The Saloon and Estate

are being released simultaneously.

Features two important new technologies: i-ELOOP and Smart City Brake Support

(AEB system).

Structure :This is an entirely new platform, with the wheelbase extended by 105mm over the predecessor by moving the front wheels forward and with the A post moved rearward for enhanced visibility.

As much as 60% High Strength Steel as part of its SkyActiv construction, with UHSS utilised for the occupant cell, to increase rigidity and reduce vehicle weight. The front end has multiple load paths for increased impact strength and the front doors include two impact beams.

Technology :i-ELOOP is a regenerative braking system utilising a variable voltage alternator that generates electricity at 25V as the Mazda6 decelerates. This is passed to a Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) for storage at 25V, then through a DC/DC converter to step down the voltage to 12V for the electrical components.

SkyActiv – This is a whole-vehicle concept to reduce weight by using more High Strength Steels, more efficiency technologies and lighter drivetrain components, to enable engine downsizing and more agile responsive vehicles.

Safety Technology :Smart City Braking System: by using a windscreen mounted sensor to monitor the road ahead, the SCBS system can alert the driver to potential collisions whilst pre-pressuring the brakes and will automatically apply the brakes if the driver takes no action. This will enable the Mazda 6 to avoid rear end collisions at low speeds and reduce the severity at higher speeds.

Lane Departure Warning System: this system uses a windscreen mounted camera that monitors the road markings and alerts the driver if it detects unintentional lane departure.

SRS :6 SRS airbags as standard on all models, with drivers, passenger, curtain, and side/seat airbags.

Trim levels :SE: manual air conditioning, front and rear electric windows, 5.8” touch screen multimedia system, front fog lamps, cruise control, push button engine start/stop and 17” alloy wheels.

SE-L: upgrades to dual-zone climate control, auto lights and wipers, privacy glass, power-fold door mirrors and most importantly Smart City Brake Support (SCBS AEB system).

Sport: Leather seats (Black is standard with ‘light stone’ as a cost option), which are heated and power adjustable, adaptive Xenon headlamps with LED daytime run lights, reversing camera, a Bose surround sound system and 19” alloy wheels. Again the Sport also has Smart City Brake Support.

ACTIONS... Thatcham are considering a research project on this vehicle very soon.

Engine line up:The Mazda6 comes with the SkyActiv 2.2 two-stage turbocharged, aluminium block, diesel engine with a very low compression ratio of 14:1 and with crankshaft and piston mass reduced by 25%. This was first seen on the Mazda CX-5 SUV. This produces 148bhp with 380Nm of torque, or 173bhp with 420Nm. This, as with other technology such as an integrated exhaust manifold, reportedly results in improved fuel consumption by as much as 20%.

There is also a 2.0 petrol SkyActiv available (also with 14:1 compression ratio) with 145 or 165PS, providing 210Nm torque from both. Other features of this engine range are hollowed and reduced mass pistons and an extended 4-2-1 exhaust system to keep gases from re-entering the combustion chamber as well as an electric variable pressure oil pump.

SkyActiv has also brought new transmissions, both automatic and manual. There is a 6-speed Manual transmission that is 3kg lighter and with less components, yet can handle engine torques up to 469Nm and provides improved efficiency over Mazda’s previous conventional transmissions.

The 6 speed automatic transmission is again from the SkyActiv range.

Paint colours:Available in 8 colours, with a new colour “Soul Red” with a unique process Mazda has developed. This colour, a 3 stage Pearlescent with a limited tinter, may not be on a mixing scheme without a special order.
