Madrid, 15 October 2014.‐ The sixth edition of Fruit Attraction (#FA14), the leading
event in the fruit and vegetable industry and the biggest stage for producers of fruit
and vegetables for export, organised by IFEMA and FEPEX (acronym in Spanish for
the Spanish confederation of fruit, vegetable and flower exporter trade associations),
will take place between 15 and 17 October in halls 3, 5, 7 and 9 of Feria de Madrid.
This yearʹs will be the biggest and most comprehensive edition yet with 800
exhibitors taking part and 26% growth in booked space for a net exhibition space of
over 26,000 square metres. The producer segment will once again have the strongest
presence, accounting for 70% of the exhibition, with 30% of exhibitors coming from
the auxiliary industry.
The presence of the countryʹs most important fruit and vegetable growing regions,
most notably Aragón, Andalusia, Asturias, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León,
Catalonia, Valencia, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Extremadura, La Rioja, and Navarre,
makes (#FA14) the top commercial and business platform and provides visitors with
the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of content, leading‐edge products and the
industryʹs most innovative systems.
Furthermore, the Fair has secured a place as one of the leading international
gatherings, especially at European level, with companies from Austria, Belgium,
France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the UK and
Sweden all taking part. Companies from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and the USA
will also attend, and for the first time, businesses from other countries such as Korea
and Turkey.
This event has become a top‐notch sales platform at the service of companies, which
has steadily achieved a status that also allows it to offer participants an arena for
driving their international expansion. To this end, IFEMA has invested heavily in
marketing campaigns and in an International Guest Programme, which will bring to
Madrid some 600 professionals from 50 countries from the purchasing and distribution
chain with strong decision‐making capacity and bargaining power.

visitors about its work and how the service operates and organise the collection of
donations during the three‐day event.
Participants in the 2013 edition of Fruit Attraction (#FA14) donated 30,000 kg of fruit
and vegetables to the Food Bank, comfortably surpassing the 22,000 kilos collected in
2012 for distribution among the city’s charities.
The sixth edition of Fruit Attraction (#FA14) will take place in halls 3, 5, 7 and 9 at Feria

ECONOMIC REPORT OF THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SECTOR IN SPAIN. 2014 FRUIT ATTRACTION PRESS DOSSIER.
1.Exporting in 2013
ROSE AN 11% AND FAR SURPASSED 10,600 MILLION EUROS IN

Spanish exportation of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2013 rose 11% in value in
regards to 2012, totalling 10,682 million euros in sales and grew 7% in volume, with
11,8 million tons grown according to statistics from the Customs and Special Taxes
Department of the Economy Ministry, which reflects a positive evolution in the
exporting sector due to the good performance of the community market, according to
the FEPEX ( Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits,
Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants).
The exportation of vegetables grew an amazing 11% in value and 10% in volume
accounting for 4,331 million euros and 4,6 million tons. The main vegetables exported
have been the tomatoes averaging 988 million euros in sales (+ 7% ), peppers which
average 718 million euros (+18%), lettuce which averages 568 million euros (-3.5%)
and cucumbers which average 464 million tons (+8%). As far as fruits are concerned,
the exportation in 2013 totalled 6,351 million euros (+11%) and 7,1 million tons

nectarines rose 22% totalling 429 million euros and peaches rose 14% totalling 331
million euros in sales. As far as berries, the growth of raspberries and blueberries to
31% and 32% more respectively must be noted as this places these in 146 and 111
million euros respectively.
In 2013 the European Union represented 92% of the total exportation carried out by
Spain with 10.9 million tons sold throughout, registering a growth of 7% in
comparison with 2012 while outside the EU 99,993 tons were exported (which
represents a +3% increase). Within those Non-EU countries, the greatest volume rate
corresponds to European countries which account for an exportation of 555,126 tons
to these, a 3% increase in 2012, with elevated increases in countries like Norway
(+10%) while suffering a notable decrease in exportations to Russia, which dropped
10%, mainly due to strong competition from Turkey. The exportation to non-EU
countries outside of Europe totalled 356,867 tons which accounts for a 3% increase.
The Valencienne Community, Andalusia and Murcia are the primary exporting
autonomic communities. Exportation in the Valencienne Community in 2013 placed

value of 3,508 million euros (+8%) while Murcia exported 2.3 million tons (8%) for a
value of 2,095 million euros (+16%). It must also be noted that the exportation out of
Catalonia was that of 924.600 tons (+5%), whereas that of Aragon 143,670 tons (+8%),
Extremadura exported 137,063 tons (-12%) Castilla y Leon came in at 134,595 tons
(+17%), Canary Islands exported 107,304 tons (+0%) and Castilla-La Mancha at
100,431 tons (+15%). The exportation of the Community of Madrid in 2013 increased
to 99,516 tons (+64%), that of Galicia rose to 71,075 tons (+12%), that of Navarra
totalled 37,113 tons (+23%), that of Illes Balears placed itself at 20,077 tons (+24%), the
Basque Country was that of 5,155 tons (-13%) and that of La Rioja was 3,441 tons (-
59%) while that of Asturias rose to 129 tons (-84%).
2. Exporting in 2014.
THE TREND KEEPS A STEADY INCREASING PACE UP TP JULY.
The exportation of fruits and vegetables from January all the way up to July in 2014
registered an increase in volume of 16% in regards to the same period the previous
year, 2013 placing itself at 7.4 million tons and where the value of such lightly rose 1%
placing it at 6,675 million euros. The exportation of vegetables during the fist seven
months of the year rose 3.2 million tons which accounts for 9% more than the same
period during 2013 for a value of 2835 million euros (-0.5%). The exportation of fruits
rose to 4.2 million tons (+3%) for a value of 3.839 million euros (+2%) according to
statistics which were updated up to July sent in from the Customs and Special Taxes
Department, processed by the FEPEX.
During the second semester of 2014, the Russian prohibition to the exportation of
fruits and vegetables coming in from the European Community shall play a relevant
role. The Central Government of the Russian Federation published a list of products
which exportation was prohibited on the 7th of August and it included all fresh fruits
and vegetables coming in from Member States of the European Union. The publication
of the list caused the community prices to a wide range of products to drop
significantly back in August.
Spain has been one of the member states which has suffered the most in an economical
sense from this vetoing measure implemented by Russia being that, on one hand,
Russia is the main Non-EU destination of Spanish fruits and vegetables and on the
other hand, the sector represents a major percentage of the agricultural production as
well as that of the exportation in which the expiring nature of such makes it especially
vulnerable to such fines.

The direct Spanish exportation of Spanish fruits and vegetables to Russia totalled
230,729 tons in 2013 but the real volume is far superior given the heavy weight of the
re-exportations from other member states such as Lithuania, Holland and Poland
which make up the primary exportation market within the European Union for
Spanish growers.
The exportation of the whole of fresh EU fruits and vegetables to Russia in 2013
totalled 2,396,000 tons with a value of 1,912 million euros. The main vegetables
exported were fresh tomatoes at 229,579 tons, followed by Coles at 91,192 tons. The
main fruits exported were apples standing at 789,720 tons and pears at 200,976 tons,
Due to the severity of the situation, during the month of August the European
Committee approved of two rules of exceptional measures which are of a temporary
nature. One is for the aide of growers of peaches and nectarines (titled the Delegated
Rule (EU) 913/2014) and another which is extended the type of measures to be adopted
and the group of products to which it would have to be applied such as tomatoes,
carrots, white cabbage, peppers, kale, cucumbers and gherkins as well as mushrooms,
apples, pears, berries, common grapes and kiwis applied in the Delegated Rule (of the
EU) number 932/2014 by the Committee on the 29th of August of 2014.
On the 10th of September the European Committee announced that it was suspending
the measures because in some member states a not very strict application of the rule
was being followed or applied. On the 29th of September it again adopted another set
of exceptional measures which enforced the previous ones and also established quotas
per products and per country.
For FEPEX the prohibition on the exportation of community fruits and vegetables has
given rise to two fundamental matters. On the one hand, that a reform of the
community´s measures for managing a crisis of which the sector disposes is urgently
required and on the other hand, that a broader range of the exportation destinations is
necessary. New markets are vital and in order to make it work a clearer and stronger
political backing from the European Committee is necessary when reaching
agreements with other countries.
3. The fruit and vegetable sector in Spain
PRIMIARY FARMING SECTOR
The value of the marketed production of fruits and vegetables in 2013 rose to 15,389
million euros which represents 58% of the Overall Spanish Vegetable Production in
which the following farming sectors are included: cereals, wine, olives… Regarding
the overall farming production, which includes the vegetable production along with

the livestock production, the fruits and vegetables make up for 35% of the total
production and so this makes up the main sector of the Spanish growing market.
The Spanish production of fruits and vegetables rises to 18 million tons of which
approximately 2/3 are set aside to be exported and 1/3 are set aside for homeland
consumption.
The surface dedicated to the production of fruits and vegetables grows to little more
than 800,000 acres of which 151,000 acres are used for growing vegetables, 56,000 acres
for growing potatoes, 312,000 acres for growing citric fruits and 280,000 acres for
growing non-citric fruits according to information from the Agricultural, Nutrition
and Atmosphere Department and which were processed by FEPEX.
4. SOCIAL RELEVANCE OF THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE FARMING
The fruit and vegetable sector is known for its multiplicity and diversity of the
products it covers which makes it commonly available in a large part of the territory
both because it keeps its activity going throughout the entire year as well as because of
its high added value which its produce generates along with its intensive nature in
workmanship.
The fruit and vegetable sector is currently found significantly in a large part of the
autonomic communities in Spain of which Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla-La
Mancha, Valencianne Community, Extremadura and the region of Murcia stand out
though they may take a relatively small part of the agricultural surface, only 9% of the
total amount, contribute to the preservation of the atmospheric surroundings being
that these avoid the break-up of large surfaces or plots of land.
The fruit and vegetable sector accounts for anywhere between 40% and 50% of
agricultural employment. It generates 400,000 direct job positions. Besides this, the
employment related with other industrial activities and those services offered in the
countryside such as watering crews, food manipulation and marketing of such
products must be given consideration. Also, it foments the development of
professional services in order to incorporate new technologies ranging from farming
technical to computerised systems, activities related with professional formation,
marketing, promoting local and international transport, etcetera. All such activities
evolve thanks to a solid productive agricultural base, which in turn contribute to
consolidating such enabling the incorporation of a higher added value as well as the
improving of its competitiveness.

The fruit and vegetable sector is also known for its multiple production structures
and the exportation these comprise. On one hand, the intensive exploitation of
vegetables and some fruits which are basically aimed at the external market and wide
national distribution is represented. On the other hand, the fruit production stands out
as being aimed at the internal, external market and the industry.
At FEPEX, administrator of FRUIT ATTRACTION along with IEMA (Institute for
Spanish Murals in Avila), the distinct production structures and horticultural
exportation which take place in our country are represented. The structure of the
companies and partnerships is heterogeneous according to the production areas and
the products these may have. Most of them are organized as commercial partnership,
cooperative partnerships and agricultural partnerships for transformation (APT), of
which dimensions vary.
5. Role of external commerce
THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES REPRESENT 34% OF THE
NATIONAL EXPORTATION OF AGRICULTURAL FOOD.
The relevance of fruits and vegetables transcends to the agricultural sector and
plays a relevant role in the external commerce. The exportation of fruits
and vegetables accounts for 34% of the Spanish agricultural food
exportation in 2013. The importations only represented 12% of it for which
its positive contribution to the agricultural food commercial scale is
decisive.
The real value of the exportation of this sector and its participation percentage in
the Spanish external commerce is even greater if assessed in net terms
keeping in mind that the participations of imported good in its minimal
production and that there hardly exist any income transfers outside of
Spain.
6. THE STRENGTHS OF THE SPANISH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE
SECTOR
1. Diversity in the offer. The exportation is integrated by a diversity of products
far superior to that of other competing countries.
2. Diversity of producing areas.
3. Diversity of productive structures (out in the open air, greenhouses).
4. Wide range of marketing calendars which enables an almost permanent
presence in the market. The marketing of such extends throughout the

entire natural year with a constant supply which allows it to maintain a
permanent relation with its clients.
5. Market orientation. The generality of the income derived by the producers of
fruits and vegetables springs from a market which is distinguished for its
strong competition both within and outside the community as well as for a
very strong competition in industrial replacement products which favours
the development process of new productions, new production techniques
and the search for new markets.
6. The integration of the production and marketing of the producing areas.
7. Proven ability of the sector to adapt to new market demands as far as quality,
safety and presentation forms of the products.
7. The exporting sector within the European Union
SPAIN IS THE MAIN PROVIDER OF FRESH FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
The commerce within the community of fresh fruits and vegetables ; that is, the
exportation of fruits and vegetables carried out by member countries of the
European Union increased in 2013 to 37 million tons according to the Statistics
Office of the EU, Eurostat.
Spain is the primary provider of fruits and vegetables in the European Union
with 29% of the total commerce of fruits and vegetables within the community
followed by Holland.
8. The exporting sector in the world
PRIMARY EXPORTING COUNTRY OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IN THE
WORLD
Spain continues to occupy first place in the global ranking of the exportation of
fruits and vegetables with a 9% total market quota, followed by Holland and
China according to the updated statistics sent by the FAO which correspond to
2011. Also, it is one of the main producers of the European Union, besides Italy
and France.
9. Consumption of fruits and vegetables in homes during 2013 and 2014
The consumption of fruits and vegetables in homes during 2013 rose to 8.682
million kilograms, which is 0.4% less than in 2012, particularly pointing out the
decrease in fruits by 2.2% totalling 4.673 million kilograms and the increases of

consumption of cherries is outstanding (+18%), strawberries (+4.9%) and grape
(+4.2%). The primary fruits consumed at homes are oranges, apples, melons and
watermelon.
As far as vegetables are concerned, the consumption in homes rose by 1.8%
placing them at 2.924 million kilograms sold, highlighting the increase in green
beans (+8.3%), zucchini (+5.6%) and onions (+4.1%). The most consumed
vegetable was the tomato followed by the onion and pepper. Consumption of the
tomato at homes is at 689 million kilograms (+0.7%) the onion stands at 359
million kilograms consumed (+4.1%) and that of pepper increased to 234 million
kilograms (+1%).
Those fruits and vegetables are, within the entire nutrition of a home, those who
occupy the biggest space in the grocery cart while meats are what require a
higher budget. Those fruits and vegetables in 2013 represented 28.3% of the total
amount of groceries purchased in homes. The fruits accounted for 15.2% of the
total purchased value whereas of the vegetables including potatoes account for a
13.1% of the total.
As per the expenditures, after the poultry, meat and fish, fresh fruits account for
9.3% and the vegetables and potatoes account for 7.9% of the expenditures in
nutrition for Spanish homes. As a whole, the total amount of expenditures in
nutrition during 2013 increased by 101.250 million euros, which is 0.6% more
than in 2012.

#FruitFusión 2014, the gastronomic stage for #FruitAttraction
Under the theme, “Avant‐garde Flavours”, this space, between pavilions 3 and 5, is
emerging as a platform for promoting horticulture products
#FruitFusión, under the theme, “Avant‐garde Flavours”, is once again representing the
gastronomic space of #FruitAttraction, which, organised by IFEMA and FEPEX, will be
held from 15 to 17 October at the Madrid Fair. This space, organised with the
collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, is once again
emerging as a unique setting for promoting horticulture products through the
international channel. It thus underscores the quality and excellence of these foods as
well as the infinite possibilities for consumption that they offer within the horeca
channel.
Among the activities and exhibits, #FruitFusion will sponsor different showcookings
prepared, for example, with the new vegetable named bimi, as well as dishes made with
endives, black garlic, aromatic herbs, apples, berries, peppers and beets, among other fruit
and vegetable‐based creations of different exhibitors participating in this important feast
for the sector. Also participating will be renowned chefs such as Jordi Ferrer, Cristóbal
Muñoz and José Álvarez.
#FruitFusion will also serve as the setting for the presentation of the Agrofood Yearbook –
on Wednesday 15 Oct, at 2 p.m.‐ and of the “Golden Gold” awards of Val Venosta apples–
on Thursday, 16 Oct., at 11.00 a.m.
#FruitFusion will take place at the space connecting pavilions 3 and 5 of the Madrid Fair,
on the three days on which #FruitAttraction is held, from 15 to 17 October.

For the sixth consecutive year FRUIT ATTRACTION collaborates
with the Madrid Food Bank
The Fair invites all its exhibitors to donate its food excess to this organization
In the 2013 Fruit Attraction edition, the Food Bank received a donation of 30,000
kilograms of horticultural foods, far surpassing the 22,000 kilograms collected in
the previous edition.
For the sixth consecutive year, FRUIT ATTRACTION, to b celebrated from the 15th to
the 17th of October, once again actively collaborates with the Madrid Food Bank in a
caring initiative which aims to gather all the remaining products presented at the fair.
FRUIT ATTRACTION, organized by IFEMA and FEPEX, collaborates in the
dissemination of this charitable event, lending spaces as well as material to the Food
Bank, in order to both facilitate information to the exhibitors and for the gathering of
the products. In this year´s edition, we will hold a space in pavilion number 7 to our
avail from which these will be able to inform onlookers of their work and of those
service details and where they will organize the gathering of the products during the
days of the fair at three different areas of the fair, being: 9G05A, 5F04A and 3F06.
In the 2013 FRUIT ATTRACTION edition, the Food Bank received a donation of
30,000 kilograms of horticultural products, far surpassing the 22,000 kilograms
collected in the previous edition.
The Madrid Food Bank Foundation (www.bamadrid.org) is a charitable, non-
lucrative organization which holds a general interest which sole objective is the
attainment, donating and posterior gratuitous distribution of food supplies among
legally recognised charitable entities dedicated to the direct aiding and caring for
needy individuals (these being psychologically or physically handicapped, elderly,
invalid children, marginalized families, recovering drug-abusers, AIDS victims, etc.)
found within the Community of Madrid. 200 volunteers collaborate in the bank, most
of which are retired professionals working in various departments.
